View Full Version : Why didn't the low-rider culture became popular in New York?
Manila-X February 1st, 2006, 08:31 AM Just wanna know why low-riders or the low-riding culture didn't become popular in NY compared to California or other cities like Chicago, Houston, Miami or Seattle?

Seriously though... street culture takes different forms. If the 70s and 80s brought the lowrider culture out in Los Angeles, in New York hip hop cut its teeth on the trains. Except, instead of chrome they had graf.
I think the closest thing you can find to a car culture in the NY area would be the import racer scene, especially out in the suburbs. You may also find bling bling style car culture around here. But NY really isn't about cars the way Miami or L.A. are.
Third of a kind February 1st, 2006, 06:09 PM its not that they weren't popular here, just I guess the media didn't cover any of it
awhile back I can remember in the mid 90's they were real popular in parts of westchester and fairfield..but then again aren't hydrolics (sp?) illegal here in ny?
LeCom February 2nd, 2006, 05:16 AM Pimp car + double parking = bad
cincobarrio February 2nd, 2006, 05:50 AM Not sure why, never thought about it really. I always saw it as West = Low Riders, East = Subways/Graf

I-275westcoastfl February 3rd, 2006, 01:33 AM Back in the time when low riders were at their peak in popularity you coulnt have a nice car in new york because the next day every piece of chrome, gold, etc would be gone so i guess thats why it isnt as popular there.

Manila-X February 3rd, 2006, 08:06 AM My first thought was the weather and it snows in New York but again, Lowriders are very popular in Chicago.
Also, it's probably because New York has an excellent transportation system so the car culture didn't took off there.
Anyway, excuse me for the size but

Hahahaha
3tmk October 29th, 2008, 05:47 PM don't forget it snows in the winter, so it's like asking why aren't there Ferraris in Alaska.
bayviews November 2nd, 2008, 04:40 AM In addition to all that's been posted here, low-riding was an outgrowth of the cruising culture that started in little boring towns like Modesto, Fresno, Sacramento, etc. in the Central Valley of California where there wasn't much else to do.
Couldn't really say that about NYC!
rickydavisfan21 November 2nd, 2008, 06:20 AM Cuz NY isn't stupid and trashy enough.
The Urban Politician November 2nd, 2008, 07:12 PM Didn't low-riding culture originate from Mexican Americans? Los Angeles and Chicago have a large proportion of Mexicans, whereas New York tends to have more of Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic sort of thing going on

Yeah, that's another factor, it spread to other groups, but it started with the Mexican Americans in places like the Central Valley in CA. That's why its big in other places with lots of Mexicans, like Chicago too. Mexicans are very recent arrivals in NYC, there weren't really any there when that got started.

Chicago has a similar climate as NY but lowriding is popular there.

NY isn't a popular choice for Mexican-Americans unlike The West Coast and the South Western states including Texas.
Most Mexicans who have settled in NY are straight from their motherland.
rickydavisfan21 November 5th, 2008, 08:44 PM If you knew the answer to your question all along why did you ask it? Also NYC is not a autocentric city much like LA, where cars are an essential. So low riders did not become popular in NYC because not everyone in NYC has a car.
krudmonk November 8th, 2008, 03:14 AM because it's a car subculture
VelesHomais November 10th, 2008, 08:09 PM What is low riding? Driving a very old, bad car? (that's what I gather from these pics)
