Which U.S. City will be the next to host the summer olympics and why?

IMO,
New York City has a lot of potential, being a world class city and all that.

I would like Chi-town, Twin cities, Seattle, SD, Miami and Philly to be able to hold the olympics.

With all do respect to my home city, in regards to Summer Olympics, we can go f*ck ourselves. We were incompetent the first time around, we don't deserve another shot to wreck the US bid again.

As far as who I think would make the best host city (not the same as who is likely to get it next)....

1. NYC
2. Chicago and San Fran

Seattle, Washington, Philly, Boston, and a few others I think would be better then Atlanta but not as good as those three.

1. New York City. (highly i doubt if they get the nod.)
2. San Francisco (i hate them)
3. Chicago (ummm good possability, after the Apple)
4. Los Angeles (doubt it, only if all else fails)
but those r my top 4!

Chicago. If not, then Miami

Azn_chi_boi

San Fran, Chicago, Miami, or Detroit

If Atlanta and Salt Lake City could hold an olympics I think my top 4 could hold an olympics, whether it's a summer or winter.

ROCguy
February 3rd, 2006, 04:11 AM
They probably shouldn't hold them in any city where it gets too hot durring summer... so that should count out the NE coast cites (Boston might be OK, but NYC, Philly, Baltimore and DC are all way too hot and humid durring summer), any Southern cities, or any desert SW cities. The Pacific NW, or the Great lakes would both have favorable weather for the summer Olympics.

NovaWolverine
February 3rd, 2006, 08:27 AM
While I agree about the weather, Atlanta had them, and Houston along with the other you mentioned, at least a couple of them have had decent bids. And Athens was hot as shit, eventhough it's the home of the olympics, I'm not too sure how much the weather is a factor. Chicago is humid too, but not as bad as NYC or DC.

I hope Houston will get it. With Downtown up and coming, maybe we can actually have something to show now to host the Olympics.

hudkina
February 7th, 2006, 01:54 AM
Actually they'll pick the 2016 host city in 2009, so if you don't have a good enough case in 2009, you won't get it regardless of how strong the case is in 2016.

February 7th, 2006, 03:34 AM
New Orleans would need a few projects built, but, it has been mentioned, quietly amongst business leaders around here. Basically, everything needed is in place already to have an Olympics in New Orleans and we already have enough hotel rooms. Lacking would be high-speed train/monorail service, which is scheduled to be built in the next few years. An Olympic stadium would need to be built, but, that would settle the issue of the Saints new stadium, that they have been arguing for in recent years. It may come as a suprise to many, but, it wouldn't be terribly difficult to have an Olympics in New Orleans and it is strategically located in the Southcentral US. Over 60 million people live within a 500 mile radius of New Orleans.

hopefully none.
the olympics tend to cost more money then they produce for cities.
atlanta and barcelona are still paying for their games.

xzmattzx
February 8th, 2006, 08:11 PM
actually, barcelona has benefitted well from the games. i think they have had some of the most success in their city after the games. but barcelona is an exception to the rule. montreal just got done paying off their debt from the 1976 games.

however my point remains the same, the olympics are an economic drain on most cities.

NovaWolverine
February 10th, 2006, 09:31 PM
See, I don't know where this too hot idea is from. There are bids from places like Cape Town, and places in Central America and places in India, so I don't know. Barcelona, Atlanta, and Athens are all pretty hot during the summer. If money can be made and there are good accomodations and facilities w/ AC I don't know if it would be that much a problem. That's one of the reasons that Houston had a good bid last time, they almost made the finals of the American stage b/c they had lots of modern AC'ed facilities.

Yeah, I know it is my Home-town, but seriously, Tampa, Florida would be a great place for the 2016 Olympics. We will have numerous new hotels in Tampa and in other Tampa Bay cities, like St. Pete and Clearwater. Transportation will be easier throughout the city. Hopefully we will have a high-speed rail from Tampa to Orlando. We have land to work with, allow we will need to destroy many homes for stadiums. We have the #1 beach on the World. We have many attractions for visitors. Tampa is a great place to host the Olympics. We lost out for 2012, but if we try for 2016, we will have a greater chance on getting it.

Vancouver might get hit really hard, they'll probably be paying for the games for a really long time

Vancouver is going through a construction boom right now, and material prices are astronomical. Construction is getting more expensive every day

so maybe pick a city that's currently in a price slump? :dunno:

I got no issues with that and in fact would love to see a games in Cape Town, Rio, or Buenos Aires. I don't think American city's should just "step aside" though. I think those city's have to show the delegation they can put on a great games and answer questions about infrastructure, venues, economy, and such though.

what a surprise

I dont!!! I thought the bid DC/Baltimore submitted for 2012 was crazy and I think its crazy for them to even consider it now. I know a lot of good can come from hosting the summer games, but I just wouldnt want to deal with the traffic and added construction and such.

Hopefully somwhere in Latin America or Africa gets the next olympics (it's almost always either here in NA or Europe...) but if an American city does get awarded with the next olympics, it would be cool if Philly got it. They do deserve more attention abroad.

The question is about US cities.

My vote goes to Chicago or Minneapolis/St.Paul. (Minneapolis was the first US runner-up to the '96 Olympics, after Atlanta, BTW)

ROCguy

^^ I totaly agree with Minneapolis, a beautiful representation of America, a nice clean city with tons of charm and sophistication and urbanness, right in the heartland too.

Even though I felt that NYC should get the olympics, I was always feeling skeptical on that. Having them is pretty expensive for a city in order to host it. Also, I feel that it would make the traffic in NYC even worse than it currently is. Let's be honest here, does NYC really need the olympics? My answer would be no, b/c NYC already gets tourists from across the country and around the world, so it's not if this will be something new. Another thing is that some felt that NYC should have the olympics b/c of 9/11. If NYC should have it b/c of a terrorist attack, then Tel Aviv should get the olympics after all of the constant terrorist attacks it was facing over the years.

Who me, biased by proximity to my hometown? Nah, that's just crazy talk. Nobody would do that, would they?

Atlanta is not still paying for the olympics.

The 96 Games were the a major part of the renissance that midtown and downtown are now experiencing. Centennial Olympic Park was a warzone before 96. The universities got incrediable dorms and facilities at no cost.

Most improtantly the city learned how to believe in itself.

I say the same about <gasp> Indy. I am sure most on here are like, "what, Indianapolis?" BUT, we do/have hosted just about EVERY "olympic trial and world championship" there is. Sure, we aren't exactly a melting pot, but is SLC? Not in my opinion.
