Nothing a little work wouldn't have solved, they should have at least kept the tower facade, then added some sort of glass structure around it. Now that would look classy.

It would not have been economical to preserve the tower of Northcliffe House. Its like trying to preserve Wembley's twin towers. How many people miss those now? Its replacement in 1 Spinnigfields Square is impressive (all be it not quite as distinctive) and contributes much more to Manchester's economy than its predecessor could had it been refurbished. My personal opinion is that preserving this building would amount to preservation blight. Its distinctive tower apart, it was a small, unremarkable building on a prime site.

Same for the Hacienda. Arguably the Hacienda had more heritage value as a club than it did as its former use and as such perhaps had a stronger case for some sort of preservation or memorial than Northcliffe House which had the dubious distinction of having produced the Daily Mail.

My nomination for building that should be un-demolished is the Hospital for Skin Diseases on Quay Street which was a beautiful building and was swept away for Direct Line's call centre operation which is housed in a particularly bland building.

The tower of Northcliffe House should have been preserved as kids said.
There aren't too many decent Art Deco structures left, and it reflected a time when architects were actually exercising a bit of f**king creativity for a change.....

Northcliffe House - good call, scandal that the tower there got demolished.

My £0.02 = the front of the Royal Exchange. Demolished courtesy of the Luftwaffe, I think.

Except that isn't the Maths Tower (and you know that).

The actual Maths Tower wasn't anything as pretty, though similar.

I would agree with you there. It was a great looking building and there were plans to at least keep the facade - amazing they got permission to knock it down. There was a building near it called the Film Exchange I think, that was a similarly attractive building. Northcliffe house was a shame, but its replacement is good and we do have Sunlight House still.

There was a warehouse on Mosley Street built 1830s, where Cobbetts is being built on the site of the putrid Eagle Star House. It was demolished about 1973 and was a scandal at the time; it being such a distinctive and attractive building (almost like demolishing the Watts warehouse (Britannia Hotel which was also threatened at one time)).

Finally the main Post Office in Spring Gardens or Marsden Street (site of current PO I think). That was one of the most attractive buildings i have ever seen. V elegant. Apparently it wasn't even bombed, they just demolished it because it was out of date.

Some nice stuff there. Edit: Was it all deliberately demolished? It suggests here the Assize Courts was a burnt-out facade after the war.

There is a land deal where United Utilities next door is giving up some land so residential can be built at the rear - bringing in some funds for the Baths.
I think the Trust are being a bit more pragmatic (realistic?) about developing the site.

^^ Its still there. And not looking too different from how it used to either. This would be my nomination for un-un-demolition.
