both the original Taoist PHILOSOPHY and the later developed RELIGION are harmful to the society in my opinion(thou the religion more so), my advice to you would be dont get too much into it, it's not good. (assuming you want to live an ordinary life).

I don't know everything there is to know about the Dao religion but I know something about the philosophy. I personally don't find the philosophy to be harmful as it really makes one think. As for the Dao religion, I don't see it as any more or less harmful than any other religion...

Care to elaborate your point?

I only read some books about Chinese mysticism,China also think the world is made up by some element,India think that's land,water,wind,fire.In China,there're five,metal,plant,water,fire,land,look at this picture.
http://www.rryx.com/20050321/42_1.jpg
Yellow one is metal,red is fire,blue is water, green is plant,the other is land.
these five elements is different,they can change to each other,look at the circle,that means one can change to the nearest element by clockwise order.How to change? killed by another element,the line between two element tells which element can kill this element.
For example,the yellow one is metal,it can change to water(blue) by fire(red ); water(blue) change to plant(green) by land;plant(green) change to fire(red) by metal(yellow)(fire break out by metal's friction);Fire(red) change to land(ash) by water(blue).
China think the world is made up by these five element,and anything contain these five element,and one change to another all the time.

Look at these two pictures,they're widely used in taoism,the relationship is much more complex,but by the same same law.
http://www.ntu.edu.sg/home2001/810609015531/blog/BeforeHeaven.jpg

China think the world is made up by two things,male and female
-- means female ; 一 means male,there're eight one,means eight direction,that's north,northeast...but they also mean some other things,
look at the second picture.
North -------- sky;
Northeast ----wind;
East----------water;
Southeast-----mountain;
South---------land;
Southwest----thunderbolt;
West---------fire;
Northwest----lake;
In taoism,if master want to use magic,the direction is very important,if he want to kill something,he should use the element which can kill it,so he should step on the right direction.Language is also important,but not like West,the main method is write the words on paper then burn it.

In China,there're also some things can kill ghost,like cross in the west.
Such as Peach tree,so taoism master always use Peach tree to make sword as magic stick;or use Fuchen,this is Fuchen;

If you want to know more,you can read "Yijing"(易经 ),a very old book(maybe 4000~5000 years) ago,full of such symbols.It is a book for prediction,it is said that the game of go is also invented at that time,it is for prediction.
The game of go.
http://www.srgame.com/images/zgwq.jpg
The game of go is also the main entertainment of taoism master,you can see a picture above,they're playing The game of go.

Taoism does not promote productivity and unity. rather, it champions individualism and anarchism, not good for a healthy society if you ask me.

But only if you take it to the extremes. I personally like the philosophical Daoism (Daodejing/ Nanhua Zhen Jing) very much and it has helped me in my life a lot. I am sure that I am not anti-social, but individualistic, yes. :)
