Zhongshan: Century Giant Lamp Tower; the world biggest lamp.

I came across a thread on SSP, which shows the worlds biggest lamp u/c in the town of Guzgen, a part of the city Zhongshan (near Guangzhou and Shenzhen).

The Lighting Capital, Guzhen Town, is located in the northwest part of Zhongshan City. It is the convergence of Zhongshan City, Jiangmen City and Shunde District of Foshan City. This town is also adjacent to Hong Kong and Macao, in possession of convenient logistic strength.

Guzhen has been evolving as a lighting industry base since 1982. Guzhen currently counts 3,000 registered lighting enterprises employing more than 50,000 workers. With efforts from both the private and public sectors, the town eventually grew into the largest specialized domestic lighting production base and wholesale market for lighting products. Currently, lighting products account for 95% of GDP in Guzhen and more than 60% of the domestic civil lighting market. These products are also exported to more than 80 countries and regions, including Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, Southeast Asia, Japan, the U.S., and Europe.

Guzhen has built up a social reputation for expanding its business. The town's most famous thoroughfare is Xinxing Road, known locally as the "Lighting Street". With government support, the seven-kilometer stretch of Xinxing Road is crammed end-to-end with lighting companies. At the opening day of 2005 Lighting Fair, an important foundation-stone-laying ceremony was held for the Century Giant Lamp Tower. The Tower was invested with over 30 million USD. It is 253.8 meters high, includes 48 floors and covers 40,000 square meters. With its estimated completion in 2007, the Tower will be regarded as a symbolic construction of Guzhen Zhongshan City and South China.

With the lighting industry widely considered as Guzhen's "economic pillar", the town's reputation as a supplier of high quality and competitively priced products has grown significantly. In September 2002, Guzhen's contribution to the lighting industry was officially recognized as "China Lighting Capital," a title bestowed on the town by the China Federation of Light Industry and the China Association of Lighting Industry.

In this city, the world biggest lamp should be currently under construction. But not much is known about this excentric building.
The height is supposed to be 253,8 meter and the number of floors 46.

A small diagram, taken from Skyscraperpage:

Some information, also from SSP:

-Originally proposed in 1999 as a 38 meter high monument.
-Museum will feature lighting fixture from ancient times to present day.
-The top part of the lamp will be translucent, like a real lamp, and be lit up.

Does anyone know more about this project?
And what do you think about this building?

I have seen this in the diagram earlier. Looks strange, it will be an interesting attraction in Zhongshan. But isn't 46 floors very much for a museum? I think the use will be "mixed use" and not "museum".

Dont worry Dubai will be quick to copy it with a 400m "Aladin's lamp" Tower

The Lamp is not ugly. It's just oriental. Another esthetics needs another point of view.
Look on all the giant golden/colorful Buddha monuments and temples, Bahai santuaries in S Asia and Far East and you will find it's definitely not ugly.
It makes Asia different from Europe. Even some of Dubai skyscrapers are very different from what we have seen in Europe/USA/Honkgong before. Different colours and fantastic shapes...
I think it's beautiful and I hope all the cultures deserve the right for localized architecture styles. I think the same was with Byzantine architecture and with Asian pagoda-style (seen in Europe probably as being wired multi-roof structure).

BTW, in my opinion it's not as controversial as mega-dildos in London and Barcelona :)

This could bring some more horrible towers. We could have an 234 meter Toilet for an Museum of Toilets or an 340 ft tower to honor The Beatles with and tower that looks like an BEATLE . Oh, the troubles this could bring

I think its innovative and might be beautiful in the appropriate surroundings.

Its not an area-affective regular skraper, but hey its a museum. I like themed buildings, well, i like themed areas in cities, especially parks etc.

But we'l see the outcome and the look IRL.

It looks like a joke in the SSP-UC diagram. I don't see a 46 story building in there, either...and it's a museum?

It does look more Arabic, too. I agree.

Will this really be a functioning lamp, or will the glass portion function as windows for floors?

If this thing will serve a giant-sized lamp, there might be a huge moth infestation! :runaway:
