Starting the tour of Brooklyn neighborhoods brings us into the hood known as Brooklyn Hts. It goes from Atlantic Ave to the Brooklyn Br between Court St with Cadman Plaza W and the East River. This hood is mostly residiential. Originally this land was home to the Canarsie Indians who had used ferry service to get between there and Manhattan. It was later taken by the Dutch durring the 1600's. In 1776, George Washington used the ferry service to go back and forth with his troops durring the Revolutionary War. In 1814, Robert Fulton was known for launching his steamboat across the East River to Brooklyn Hts. Throughout the 1800's, brownstones were being built and it gave the area a village-like setting. The construction of the els and the Brooklyn Br in the 1880's allowed for more developement to come such as the construction of the Hotel St George. In 1908, the IRT line extended over into Brooklyn at borrough hall as others didn't get it until 1933. In 1965, Brooklyn Hts became a landmarked neighborhood. It has even has the Brooklyn Historical Society at 128 Peirpoint St. In 1995, the Hotel St George burned down after some dropped a blowtorch on the ninth floor, but was rebuilt after that occured. Even today, Brooklyn Hts remains as Brooklyn's most prestigous neighborhood, and even ranks first in real estate for this borrough. The Brooklyn Hts Promenade offers views of the Manhattan, or at least did until 9/11. Either way, it contains a picturesque setting for Brooklyn.
