Banaue Rice Terraces Dubbed as the "Eight Wonder of the World," the Banaue Rice Terraces start from the base of the mountain range and reach up to several thousand feet high. Made 2,000 years ago, these rice terraces manifest the engineering skill and ingenuity of the sturdy Ifugaos. Streams and springs found in the mountains were tapped and channeled into irrigation canals that run downhill through the rice terraces.The invitingly beautiful Banaue rice terraces are found on the island of Luzon, in the province of Ifugao. They are situated in the Central Cordillera mountain range North Luzon. Aside from Banaue rice terraces, nearby are other similar Ifugao terraces.

Is there a plan to renovate and improve Burnham? Some parts are a bit old and dilapidated already. But it's still a lovely park. When we visited two weeks ago, we watched/listened to the PMA band play some Christmas tunes at the park. :colgate:

The world's smallest ever whale shark has reportedly been discovered in waters off the eastern Philippines.The baby whale shark measured just 15 inches. The shark measuring just 15 inches, was found in shallow water off Donsol in the Philippine province of Sorsogon on Saturday. Activists for the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) who were involved in the whale's rescue said they heard a live whale shark was being offered for sale at a nearby beach. Expecting a stranded giant, the rescuers instead found a tiny shark tied to a stake in the mud like a neglected puppy.

The WWF said the baby fish is "arguably the smallest living whale shark in recorded history". Whale Sharks, which can grow up to 40 feet long, are the largest fish on the planet. Little is known about the sharks' breeding grounds and where they give birth.

Donsol is known for its large adult whale shark population but it is not known to be a breeding ground. A WWF spokesman said: "This new discovery is the first indication that this coastline may actually be a birthing site." Whale sharks, which are harmless to humans, face a high risk of extinction, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

At Matnog town's Calintaan Island of Sorsogon Province - about 600km south of the Philippine's capital city of Manila. The place is somewhat remote and obscure compared to the country's more popular white-sandy beach resorts. Travellers including this photographer who had gone to this place has noted the place for its pristine condition, naturally clean, and its fine white to pinkish-color of its fine sands. Best to come to this place is during Philippine summer months i.e. May.

Standing beside these huge windmills was kinda surreal. hehe

The Bangui Windmills are located in Bangui, Ilocos Norte, Philippines. The windmills, officially referred to as the NorthWind Bangui Bay Project, is a project by NorthWind Development Corporation that taps renewable energy sources to help reduce the greenhouse gases that cause global warming. The project is the first “Wind Farm” in the Philippines consisting of wind turbines on-shore facing the South China Sea and considered to be the biggest in Southeast Asia. The project sells electricity to the Ilocos Norte Electric Cooperative (INEC) and provides 40% of the power requirements of Ilocos Norte via Transco Laoag. A mountain with a hole. We weren't able to go into the cave because of the stormy weather and the high tide. The weather that day added to the allure of the Pagudpud coastline -- such a rugged but beautiful landscape.

Throughout the trip, Mr. Alonzo kept telling us to watch out for monkeys throughout the island. We did not see any and when I pointed that out to him, he tells us that the monkeys are all riding the tramvias. I knew I'll like him from the start.

Throughout the tour, we found the island well maintained and run professionally by its keepers. I did not see the trash previously mentioned in this thread. The grounds are well maintained, some of the keepers are dressed in Filipino World War II uniforms and they really look sharp.

The Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park is located about 50 kilometers north of the city of Puerto Princesa, Palawan, Philippines. The National Park is located in the Saint Paul Mountain Range on the northern coast of the island.

Banaue Rice Terraces Dubbed as the "Eight Wonder of the World," the
Banaue Rice Terraces start from the base of the mountain range and reach
up to several thousand feet high. Made 2,000 years ago, these rice terraces
manifest the engineering skill and ingenuity of the sturdy Ifugaos. Streams
and springs found in the mountains were tapped and channeled into irrigation
canals that run downhill through the rice terraces.The invitingly beautiful

The chance to swim with whale sharks, known locally as butanding, has lured tourists from around the world to the sleepy fishing village of Donsol, Philippines, where a great number of the world's biggest shark congregate.

DONSOL, PHILIPPINES–The scene is reminiscent of Jaws ... the G-rated Philippines version.We are looking for a shark, one as large as a bus, that grows to more than 14 metres long and weighs more than six adult elephants. The shark we anticipate meeting is not the feared Great White but its affable relative, the whale shark, known locally as butanding.

The boat crew searches far and wide for the grey creature with light polka dots that has lured tourists from around the world to the sleepy fishing village of Donsol, 540 kilometres southeast of Manila, where a great number of whale sharks congregate. Despite its monstrous size, the butanding is known for its friendly and gentle nature. Discovered off the coast of South Africa in 1828, much about this species remains a mystery.

Joel Briones, 39, the Butanding Interaction Officer who leads our group, gives us a heads-up on whale sharks. Butanding Interaction Officers are trained to ensure the safety of both whale sharks and visitors, who are required to undergo an orientation. They discourage people from touching the sharks, and forbid scuba diving, jet skis, scooters and other noisy watercraft.

"They don't bite," Briones reassures us, explaining that whale sharks crave plankton, krill and small fishes such as dillis and squids. "They're a very, very gentle animal. They don't mind being beside you." During his 10 years leading whale shark interaction trips, Briones says butanding have never bitten or hurt anyone. An endangered and protected species, they have been frequenting the waters near the town for generations, says Briones. The area has been an official sanctuary for whale sharks since 1998.

Seized by excitement, I don't mind the waves crashing against the boat. But the moody weather on this day makes it tricky to spot the whale shark. More than an hour later, the spotter sees a shadow and dorsal fins from the dark, choppy South China Sea. Summoned to the bow of the boat by the guide, a few snorkellers (with life jackets provided for those who can't swim well, including myself) jump into the waters.

With my feet dangling by the side, I am suddenly paralyzed. Sharks are one of my greatest fears.

The boat leaves the group to avoid scaring the butanding.

About half an hour later, the crew returns for the snorkellers, one of whom excitedly reports seeing the shark's tail. But a few didn't get to see it at all. It's not over yet. The whale-watchers find the butanding again. One of the tourists doesn't let her seasickness stop her from making the leap this time and she's soon rewarded with a thrilling encounter.

Meanwhile, I still haven't taken the plunge.

The boat crew isn't about to give up on getting my cold feet wet. They manage to find another shark and finally, I slip into the water. Briones, the only one to accompany me in this round, soon tells me to look down. As I go underwater, I abandon my fears for a moment, amazed as I come face-to-face with the world's biggest fish and shark.

Then the realization that I am mere inches from the butanding hits me.

As I try to move away, I feel something on my right foot. To my surprise, Briones tells me that I kicked the shark, but it wasn't hurt. Though I was the most scared among the group, Briones says I had one of the best up-close interactions as the whale shark, just a baby and about five metres long, stopped swimming and remained beside us near the surface.

"You were lucky," he says.

Such a coveted butanding sighting doesn't happen for all, the guide says, but 90 per cent of tourists do get to see them year-round, especially in March and April. Each visitor typically sees more than a dozen whale sharks during the peak season. The butanding wasn't always an appreciated star in Donsol. Just like the Great White haunting the waters off the fictional Amity Island in Jaws, this shark was at first seen as a menace by locals.

Briones remembers early butanding sightings during fishing trips with his father when he was 6. "I was afraid because I didn't know that it was a whale shark," he says. "Only the locals called it butanding. I didn't know its temperament or attitude." Locals tried to scare away the whale sharks by throwing sharp objects at them and slaughtering them at an alarming rate, as recently as a decade ago.

"We knew it here in Donsol as our enemy," Briones says. "It destroyed our nets and propellers and ate the small fishes." Selling for as much as the equivalent of $400-plus (Cdn) each, the butanding was hunted in the region, especially in Donsol, for its fins which were used for soup, and its meat, which was used for perfume and scented candles.

The Philippine government finally banned the practice in 1998. Since then, the World Wildlife Fund has helped establish community-based ecotourism for the whale shark tours in Donsol and the locals now recognize the value of preserving the butanding. Its name doesn't have a meaning in English, but locals referred to anything that was big or ugly as "butanding," Briones explains.

"But when I saw it under the water, I changed my mind," he says. "It was the opposite. It was beautiful."

There is a Crater Lake within the Taal Volcano and Taal Lake surrounds the Taal Volcano.

With a breathtaking view from Tagaytay City, Taal is an active volcano
situated in Batangas province.
It consists of an island in Lake Taal, which is situated within a caldera
formed by an earlier, very powerful eruption.
It is located about 50 km from Manila.
The volcano has erupted violently several times in the past and
because of its proximity to populated areas and eruptive history,
the volcano has been designated a Decade Volcano worthy of close study
to prevent future natural disasters.

Intramuros in Manila was built by the Spaniards during the 16th century. Its name taken from Latin - literally means "within the walls" - describes its structure as it is surrounded by thick, high walls and moats.

The Miag-ao Church was built in 1786 by Spanish Augustinian missionaries and was declared as part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Baroque Churches of the Philippines" in 1993. The church and its watchtowers were also built to defend the town and its people against raids by the Moros. It has thick walls with secret passages that it is sometimes referred to as the Miag-ao Fortress Church.

History has it that the parish of Paoay in Ilocos Norte was founded by Augustinian Missionaries in 1593. The church walls are more than 1 meter thick -- made of coral stones. The design of the church is a mixture of Gothic, Oriental and Baroque influence. This church is now one of UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites.

Panglao Island - one of Philippine's top tourist destinations -
is located southwest of the island of Bohol and east of Cebu.
About 250 new species of crustaceans and 2500 new species of mollusks
were found around the island.
It is claimed that Panglao alone has more marine biodiversity than
Japan and the Mediterranean sea.

Tarsier, one of the smallest primates in the world.

The TARSIER: Believed to be about 45 million years old,
the species was only introduced to western biologists in the 18th century.
The Philippine Tarsier measures about 4 to 6 inches (15 cm) in height.
The average mass for males is around 134 grams, and for females,
around 117 grams.
The average adult is about the size of a human fist and
will fit very comfortably in the human hand.
These huge eyes provide this nocturnal animal with excellent night vision.

Tubbataha Reef is a marine sanctuary protected as Tubbataha Reef National Marine Park
located in the Sulu Sea. Declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO,
it has become a popular site for seasoned sports divers because of its coral “walls”
where the shallow coral reef abruptly ends giving way to great depths.
The seemingly diverse ecosystem of this sanctuary rivals the Great Barrier Reef
and many are already endangered species.

Tubbataha is home to giant jacks, hammerhead sharks, barracudas, manta rays,
palm-sized moorish idols, parrot fish, moral eels, clownfish, lionfish and
hawksbill sea turtles (Eretmochelys imbricata) which are endangered species.

Aside from being a marine sanctuary, Tubbataha is also renowned for being a bird sanctuary.
A lighthouse islet, at the southern tip of the South Atoll, supports a large number of seabirds which nest there.
Around the Tubbataha, there are tens of thousands of masked red-foot boobies, terns, and
frigate birds resting during their annual migrations.
