INTRAMUROS, Manila Philippines

INTRAMUROS, the old capital of Manila, was built in 1571 by Miguel Lopez de Legaspi, a Spaniard.. It remains a monumental, if ruined, relic of the Spanish period in Philippine history. It is a city within a city, separated from the rest of Manila by its crumbling walls. This ancient capital had well-planned streets, plazas, the Governor’s Palace and churches. However, many buildings were reduced to shambles in World War II.
The walled city covers an area of about 160 acres. Intramuros was a fortress city with walls 6 metres high and a commanding 3 kilometres in length, it is no wonder it was impenetrable at that time.

Statue of Lapu Lapu - Cebu, Philippines
Lapu-Lapu was the datu of Mactan, an island in the Visayas, Philippines, who is known as the first native of the archipelago to have resisted Spanish colonization. He is now regarded as the first Filipino hero.
On the morning of April 27, 1521, Lapu-Lapu and the men of Mactan, armed with spears, kampilan and kalasag, faced Spanish soldiers led by Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan. In what would later be known as the Battle of Mactan, Magellan and several of his men were killed.

Fieldtrip: CALAMIANES ISLANDS PALAWAN
------------------------------------------
This was not your ordinary class outing. Other schools would have taken a bus or a plane to enjoy a destination, but the students of St. Anne’s College of Lucena…cruised on the 7107 Islands Cruise ship. And the location was more than what they have imagined. It was not just Coron they explored – trekking its ragged dark cliffs, diving underneath pristine lagoons, and visiting souvenir shops – they discovered new islands hardly seen on the map of the Philippines. Islands they barely heard of or knew existed.
Their first night they enjoyed the vista of Manila Bay aboard the 7107 Islands Cruise, enjoying the beauty of a sunset that inspired more than a thousand pictures. Then they were awoken early by an announcement that they have arrived in Coron. The first sight that greeted them was the dark intricately molded islets that surround Coron Island, illuminated by the soft glow of the early morning sun, subdued by the silver mist of the clear waters of Coron.
The whole day of March 6, they enjoyed touring Coron Town and Coron Island. They visited Kayangan Lake – voted one of the cleanest lakes in the Philippines, hidden behind the rocks that protect a rare Chinese delicacy called balinsasayaw nest or “bird’s nest” which cost more than 200,000 a kilo when sold. An ancestral domain and protected site by the Tagbanua Tribe, Coron Island’s lakes are considered sacred.
Then they swam beneath the opening in the rock to Twin Lagoons, where they enjoyed the quiet of nature, where their voices echoed off the walls enclosing the lagoon. While beneath them swam a hundreds of fish. They also sailed pass the marine sanctuary of Siete Picados and some visited Maquinit Hot Spring – one of only 3 saltwater hot springs in the world, which helped rejuvenate them.
March 7, after a night of laughter and fun as the crew entertained them during Crew’s Night with music, magic, and some comedy, they woke up to a whole new world. As they had breakfast they passed by other islands of the Calamianes as they headed to Culion. White sand beaches, blue waters that sparkled like sapphires with the brightness of the sun – was all for their pleasure. Picnic lunch was on Malcapuya, where they had fun eating the “island way”, they went snorkeling around the island, enjoyed a game of tug-and-war, some guests visited other islands such as Banana, Malaroyroy, and Ditaytayan. But it was a relaxing vacation, where they enjoyed the sunset on the island and watched the afterglow onboard 7107 Islands Cruise.
March 8, 7107 Islands Cruise brought them to other islands north of Busuanga, where the group had picnic lunch underneath the coconut trees and beach cabanas of Dibotunay Island. Then they toured the small fishing village of Panlaitan where they enjoyed buying dried squid called “bolpen” (because it looks like a pen). Later grilled dinner onboard at the Sun Deck with another view of the sun setting on Calamianes waters as they watched the silhouette of Malajon Island (also known as Black Island) bidding them farewell.
It was like entering a dream and leaving a magical world… only in 7107 Islands Cruise.

Surrendering to Bliss (http://businessmirror.com.ph/home/life/17255-surrendering-to-bliss.html)
Life, Written by Ma. Stella F. Arnaldo

http://i1015.photobucket.com/albums/af278/dxb_01/life-pic01.jpg

THE province of Albay in Bicol doesn’t exactly conjure images of luxury and pampering. To most people, it just means the ever-rumbling Mayon Volcano, rows of abaca plants, and a great deal of pili nut products. Oh, yes, and who can forget—the devastating typhoons that always seem to batter the area?

Surprisingly, as my friends and I arrived in Legaspi City after leaving Manila’s rain-drenched streets only an hour before, the sun was shining at its mightiest. We were later told that in this part of the country, the weather is actually the reverse of what it is in Metro Manila. So if you feel that vacation itch during the rainy season, the Bicol region is actually the best destination to escape to.

We were on our way to Misibis Bay Raintree, one of only three Philippine establishments that have made it into the Small Luxury Hotels (SLH) of the World group. SLH counts only 500 of the most exclusive establishments in the world which cater to a very discriminating clientele in terms of luxury and hospitality.

Upon our arrival at the airport, we were met by the friendly resort staff and whisked off in a van to its dock at the newly built commercial and entertainment complex, the Embarcadero at the Legaspi port. A fancy welcome of bubbling champagne and suman awaited us, while cool pleasantly scented white face towels did the trick in refreshing and energizing us for the next part of our journey.

We then boarded a fastcraft for the 30-minute ride to the lush and verdant Cagraray Island, located northeast of Legaspi. Everywhere we looked, the calm azure waters provide a delightful contrast to the sunny cloudless sky. The only visible puffs of white were from Mayon Volcano, no longer with the perfect cone, but still unparalleled in its grandeur.

Local folk dancers dressed in colorful costumes welcomed us as we made our way to the Spice Market, the resort’s main restaurant. It being the early morning, and already battling low blood-sugar levels, we eagerly wolfed down our breakfast of fried garlic rice, sunny-side up eggs, and New Look, a very meaty dried fish that we discovered on our visit last year. (It’s called New Look because the specie was only discovered in the waters of Bicol sometime in the 1960s, and has yet to be identified with any scientific name, or so a local fisheries graduate told us.) Super-addicting!

After a hearty breakfast, we were led to our beachfront villas, where a soothing foot scrub and massage awaited us. The villa I was assigned to had a commanding view of the sparkling Albay Gulf and the clear blue sky visible through floor-to-ceiling picture windows. It also had a sundeck with two lounging beds where guests could soak up the rays of the sun.

The main feature of each of the villas is, of course, the king-sized bed and fluffy goose-down pillows all wrapped in 350-thread count linen. It was so heavenly to sink into, it took much effort to get up from after a nap or a night’s rest. Imagine a stunning view of peaking waves and drifting clouds each morning, and lying in a huge comfy bed...now that’s what I call a vacation! Even when it drizzled, it was just so peaceful and serene to lie in bed, under the snug covers, neck cradled by gentle pillows, and look out those windows.

The villa also had a large heated bathroom where guests can bathe using either the generic bottled bathroom amenities or L’Occitane toiletries.

Each villa is assigned a female butler, who conscientiously tidies up the room whenever the guest is out, folds clothes strewn about, hangs wet bathing suits in the outdoor clothes line, and rearranges the hand towels into their original fan shapes. Okay, truthfully, by the second day, this was freaking me out because this was way too OC for me. Personally, I’m the type who needs a little disorder in my life, but I’m sure other guests will not mind the careful attention to detail the butler gives to their room. (The butler also had an annoying habit of waking me up while I was fast asleep, which I suppose can be ascribed to the resort being just in its soft-opening phase and the staff still needing to get used to the ways of guests.)

What I did appreciate was the warm sudsy bath the butler prepared on the dot, at 6 pm, each evening. Returning to the villa from a vigorous yoga workout and soaking in that bathtub even for just 30 minutes was so divinely comforting.

Adventurous guests have lot of activities to choose from, such as jetskiing, windsurfing, skipping on the water via the banana boat ride, snorkeling, lava trekking near Mount Mayon, and doing the zip line. My pal Marianne went scuba diving just off the Misibis dock and was pleasantly surprised to have seen a manta ray with a 6-foot wingspan swim near her and her dive master. She said it was so close, it could’ve been possible for her to just reach out and touch the creature’s belly. And this was just in 30 feet of water.

If you’re not the type who wants to push up your cardiac rates while on vacation, my pals and I, for instance, had a cooking class with the resort’s chief cook, Danny Gonzales, a Batangueño who has learned to whip up feisty Bicolano dishes. We also made pili nut panna cotta under the guiding hand of Pastry Chef Edgar Encinas. (Of course, we playfully berated Chef Edgar for not preparing sugar-free desserts for diabetics and health-conscious guests.)

In the evening, one can enjoy the nightly entertainment provided by the resident lounge singers, sing yourselves hoarse at the videoke room, or just chillax watching a movie in the den. And if you can’t really tear yourself away from your busy urban life, there is a business center where you can check your e-mails, or insanely update your Facebook status detailing all your activities at the resort.

What I love about Misibis Bay Raintree is that feeling of privacy and blissful isolation, where a real vacation of doing nothing is possible. For people like me who have had enough of the chaotic rush of vacationers, the garbage on the beach, as well as the nightly noise and parties of some island resorts, Misibis is really the perfect place to get away from it all.

Fort Pilar (Spanish: Real Fuerza de Nuestra Señora del Pilar de Zaragoza) is a 17th century military defence fortress built by the Spanish colonial government in Zamboanga City on Mindanao Island in the Philippines.

In defense against pirates and raiders of the sultans of Mindanao and Jolo and upon the requests of the Jesuit missionaries and Bishop Fray Pedro of Cebu, the Spanish governor Don Juan Cerezo Salamanca approved the building of a stone fort in the year 1635. The fort was originally called "Real Fuerza de San Jose". [Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fort_Pilar)]

Le Man's Go-Kart
----------------
If you're not a real racer or just a racer by heart but don't exactly have the heart to get on the beaten racer track, then go-carting at Le Man's Go Kart is a good way to feel like a real racer. It's a great way to enjoy the sport without getting your hands dirty so to speak. Filipino go-kart racers from various parts of the country would get together here to race in annual competitions.
Le Man's Go Kart is right beside the famous Subic Bicentennial Park, which is just along the Rizal Highway. They're open from 10 am to 7 pm, but you can come a few minutes earlier to be first in line. They have single-seater and two-seater fun carts and they also have racing carts. You can race for 10 laps with rates at P250 to P600 depending on what cart you take.

Subic Extreme Adventure Park
----------------------------
Subic has several theme parks that visitors can enjoy. One these theme parks can be quite a challenge and would test your limits. The Subic Extreme Adventure Park is where you will discover just how far or how high, taking it literally sometimes, you can really go. If you're the type who wants to experience big thrills then try the challenges in this theme park. Moving around is already an adventure since you'll be walking over hanging bridges elevated high up above ravines and tall trees.
The toughest challenge, and most exciting one it seems, is what they call 'slide for life'. You'll be wearing a body harness and will climb up 100 feet high in the air up on a platform on a tree. You'll be getting an astounding view of the rainforest from up there - then comes the part where you'll be screaming as you slide down a rope where your harness is attached. The guides may take pictures as you slide down, if that isn't all too embarrassing. Other activities here include tension traversing, high pole jumping, and high ladder climbing.

Jungle Joe's Paintball Course

Jungle Joe's is another theme park in Subic that is worth visiting. And if you're a paintball freak then try their course with your shooting buddies. Scope out their sniper towers, obstacles, foxholes, and a host of barricades to make everything a lot more challenging. The course is set on a two-hectare forest area, which makes combat as life-like as possible.

Triboa Bay Mangrove Park
------------------------
Those who want to take a break from all the thrilling parks in Subic may want to experience a quiet afternoon at the Triboa Bay Mangrove Park located in the area of the Ilanin Forest. The biological diversity in this park is pretty high where two ecosystems meet. The mangroves, of course, are the highlight of the park.

THE Manila Economic and Cultural Office (Meco) in Taipei is now bidding to make Philippine destinations as the favorite beach-wedding locations for Taiwanese couples ahead of Hawaii.

Ireneo Reyes, Meco director for tourism, said his office will aggressively promote Boracay, Palawan, Cebu, Davao, and other island and coastal  areas in the Philippines to Taiwanese tourists as alternative to Hawaii.

“The beauty of our beaches remains one of our major draws for Taiwanese. Many couples looking to get married abroad do so in Hawaii , but Philippine beaches can more than hold their own, especially when cost is factored in,” Reyes said.
.......
The Taiwanese also showed interest in dive sites, golf and Filipino schools offering the English language program.

An honest review of Hotel St. Ellis

Legazpi’s pride (http://www.manilastandardtoday.com/insideBusop.htm?f=2010/january/4/vicagustin.isx&d=/2010/january/4)

The refurbished La Trinidad hotel in Legazpi City quietly reopened as Hotel St. Ellis on Dec. 1, and what great timing it was. From an occupancy rate in the 30 percent, the 40-room hotel, as were the other local hotels, was suddenly fully booked in the Christmas to the New Year runup, thanks to Mayon Volcano, according to Albay Gov. Joey Salceda.

St. Ellis owner Elizaldy Co has done a marvelous renovation job, a wonderful surprise to travelers expecting a provincial dump but instead finding themselves walking into a Greenbelt 5-like lobby (but without the Greenbelt 5 sting on the wallet, when it comes to hotel dining. The food and cutlery also have that sleek look).

The hotel’s day-to-day management and quality assurance have been farmed out to the Genesis Group, which is controlled by former Manila Hotel general manager, the Spaniard-turned-local Miguel Cerqueda.

One minor irritation: The hotel’s front and back doors need to install air curtains, to prevent pesky flies from sneaking in and bothering diners.

Too bad, dai na ako makakua ki photo updates hehe. Maghalat na lang kita may magpost sa internet. hehe

Philippines Island is the most beautiful island in the SEA this is no doubt.

There are few things that we need to develop and we will be like Thailand as a tourist heaven.

1. We should sign an open skies agreement. So that flight ticket to Philippines will be cheaper. More flight availability.
2. Hotel must reduced there prices. Our hotel prices is half price expensive than Thailand.

I have a lot of European friends and they really want to visit phils but they can afford because it is so expensive.

Comparing to Thailand 3 days package to phils can go to 2 weeks package in thai.

It is true it is expensive but I certainly I dont want the Philippines to be another Thailand - whose trampled by millions of people. Not good for the environment and not for the cultures. Mass tourism is not the answer, it is the problem.

Summer’s test drive galore
(http://news.google.com/news/url?sa=t&ct2=us%2F0_0_s_1_0_t&ct3=MAA4AEgBUABqAnVz&usg=AFQjCNGc9PBflR71wzVDhXK18_ahCyTRcA&sig2=m22u6n44e6f0t2fCGx8hRA&cid=0&ei=LDl7S5iYH4ve6wP8orkX&rt=SEARCH&vm=STANDARD&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.philstar.com%2FArticle.aspx%3FarticleId%3D550347%26publicationSubCategoryId%3D72)
This time of the year offers multiple test drives for motoring journalists from different local automobile manufacturers and distributors who take advantage of the fine weather that usually pervades to show the wares of their different current offerings in the market. One of the first was Honda Cars Philippines, which invited the motoring media for a 2-day event to put in actual test the performance of the 2010 Honda CR-V.

Dubbed as “Discovering Crossover”, its aim is to enable the participating journalists to discover how its new market offering goes well crossing over with various lifestyles and experience the CR-V 2010 model’s upgrades like adjustments on its suspension system for better handling and comfort and the effects of added seals and insulators to reduce noise, vibrations and harshness.

To validate these claims a technical exercise was designed by professional driver Georges Ramirez and executed by all participants at the roof deck of Trinoma plus a 600 kilometer drive to and from La Union with the return trip to Manila traversing the inner highways of Asingan, Guimba, Cuyapo, Victoria and the long stretches of the SCTEX and the NLEX using the old and new models of the CR-V 2.4 to identify the marked improvement in the latest model.

Then there was the test drive event of Isuzu Philippines Corp. (IPC) that was named “Trailing Southern Luzon with the 2010 Isuzu Alterra and Caltex Diesel with Techron”, which went through a 500 kilometer route that offered an ideal mix of different types of terrain through city traffic and the fast highways from Sta. Rosa, Laguna and then motoring through Lucena and Calaug in Quezon and a drive through Sipokot in Camarines Sur and finally to Legaspi City before taking a barge to their final destination – the posh Misibis Bay Raintree Resort on Cagraray Island in Albay.

“We were getting a lot of positive feedback from Alterra owners. Most of them tell us they are really satisfied with their SUV especially on long, out-of-town drives. So we invited some members of the media to do this long distance drive and ask them to see for themselves if what our customers are saying is really true,” stated IPC’s amiable president Keiji Takeda.

“The Philippine market is quite fortunate to have the Alterra,” added IPC’s soft-spoken and industry veteran senior vice president Art Balmadrid. “This world-class SUV is only available here and in Thailand. Since we launched it in 2005, it has consistently captured a very good market share and won various consumer awards. It is a perennial favorite among Filipinos with big families,” concluded Art.

Resort Check: Misibis Bay Raintree
(http://asia.businesstraveller.com/asia-pacific/tried-and-tested/others/resort-check-misibis-bay-raintree)Business Traveller Asia-Pacific

WHAT’S IT LIKE? With only 38 villa suites in the 20ha property, you pretty much have the whole place to yourself. It’s your very own private resort island amid a tropical setting that calls to mind the upscale getaways in Phuket and Langkawi.

WHERE IS IT? Cagraray Island is an hour’s bus ride from Legazpi City, the capital of Albay Province in Bicol. However, resort guests are greeted in style on arrival. As part of the package, visitors get a round-trip airport transfer that includes a 30-minute ferry ride across the Sula Channel in a private fastcraft owned by the resort. On a clear day, the best seats are at the back where there is a small alfresco area.

ROOM FACILITIES There are 38 villa suites. Those facing the poolside are classified into four categories: Junior Suite Deluxe, Premier Villa, One-Bedroom Deluxe and One Bedroom Premier. Those with beachfront views are classified into three different categories: Junior Suite Premier, Luxury Villa and One-Bedroom Luxury.

Certified urbanites need not miss the comforts of the city as the rooms are fitted with flatscreen LCD TV with local and international cable channels, DVD and CD player, iPod dock, luxurious bathroom with separate toilet, shower and bathtub, telephone with IDD, Wi-Fi internet access, minibar, refrigerator, hairdryer, safe and many more.

ROOM HIGHLIGHTS All suites have their own living and dining areas and have a private direct access to the pool or the beach. Furthermore, each suite has its own balcony and sun deck partitioned by a wall-to-ceiling glass panel from the rest of the room. Interiors are tastefully done with minimalist décor. The clean white walls are set off by paintings and throw pillows in bright shades give the room a splash of colour.

RESTAURANTS AND BARS There are four. Spice Market specialises in Asian cuisine in a fine-dining setting. DeLaPlaya is a beach grill and tapas bar that is open nightly, specialising in steaks and seafood. Pool Bar is a swim-up bar that serves casual fare, while the Beach Bar provides beverages and cocktails and an all-day dining menu at the boardwalk pavilion.

BUSINESS AND MEETING FACILITIES There is a function room equipped with meetings paraphernalia. It can accommodate groups of up to 350 people.

LEISURE FACILITIES As comfy as the suites are, the whole point of staying in Misibis Bay Raintree is to take your adventurous side out of the closet. There are three swimming pools and one kilometre of white-sand beach for aqua biking, bottom fishing, kayaking, diving, snorkelling and windsurfing. On land, guests can enjoy a nature trek, ATV rides, horseback riding and mountain biking. The resort has its private helicopter available for charter for an aerial tour of Mount Mayon.

For more sedate activities, there is a recreation room for crafts and coconut-hat weaving. There is a health club as well as Spa at Misibis Bay with hot pools and saunas. Guests have a choice of having the treatment indoors or outdoors. There is a children’s activity centre fitted with a movie room with a DVD/CD library and loaded with games galore from traditional board games and billiards to video games on PlayStation and Wii.

PRICE Internet rates for a stay in mid-January started from US$385 per night in a Junior Suite Deluxe, with a maximum occupancy of two people and one child. Rates include daily breakfast and round-trip airport transfers.

VERDICT Ideal for people who put a premium on high-end island experience coupled with exclusivity and privacy.

Why can't Philippines be the 'next Thailand'? It has everything that Thailand has to offer and then some. Not to mention the fact that Philippino people are known for being very warm and friendly.

^^I was thinking along that line too.
One observation and I know is a fact is that
hotel rates in Thailand is way cheaper than in the Philippines.
Most of the people I talk to with regard to this is that they find
Thailand much cheaper in almost everything than in the Philippines.

imo, theres still no competition for hotel room rates in the Philippines thats why hotel rate is slightly higher compare to Thailand, law of supply and demand. :)
in reality I still like the fact that most wonders in the Philippines is still untapped and untouched by any developments, hidden gem as they say.

my 2 centavos. cheers! :)

Zamboanga - Asia's Latin City

http://www.thelandofpromise.com/zambosur/blvd1-PICT0023.jpg
Cawa-cawa Boulevard at Dusk, Zamboanga City

Zamboanga City is located on the western most peninsula of the big island of Mindanao, the Philippines. It is a busy international port strategically located on the Basilan Straight.

The city has long been a bastion of Spanish intelligentsia, and is home to some of the finest educational institutions in the country and around Asia. The literacy rate of the region, and of the country in general, is one of the highest in all of Asia.

The Spanish culture influences the way of life of the Zamboangueños. The culture blends harmoniously with Moorish and western influence.

http://www.thelandofpromise.com/zambosur/regatta4-V0000058.jpg
Regatta de Zamboanga

Zamboanga City's Art history spans a period of over 500 years, with heavy influence coming from the Malay and Spanish culture early on, and the West more recently. Countless, and quite priceless, artefacts dating back to over a thousand years have been excavated in the early 1900s by American archaeologists during their occupation of the Philippines in the vicinities of Zamboanga and Mindanao. Many of these artefacts are currently housed in "vaults" of some major U.S. universities, inaccessible to the general public.

http://scriptorium.lib.duke.edu/scriven/phil10-200.jpeg
Moro School Zamboanga, Mindanao, P.I.

Zamboanga City is also a centre for Moro brassware and bronze ware, and a collecting point for numerous varieties of shells, which are exported or used locally for button manufacture and many other products and souvenirs. The Philippine Archipelago is home to over a third of the world's known sea shells, and Zamboanga's Great Santa Cruz Island is home to many shells and corals, and the pristine "pink" sand - a coloration effect of the white sand and red coral sand mixed together.

http://www.lakbaypilipinas.com/images/mindanao_zamboanga_fort_pilar.jpg

Fort Pilar with its world-renowned religious shrine of Our Lady of the Pillar, was built in the 17th century by the Spanish soldiers, along with their Jesuit counterparts, for the protection of Christian settlers against Moro (Muslim) pirates, and other marauding invaders from nearby Chinese and Dutch outposts. It now houses the Fort Pilar Museum, one the few national historic museum chain that houses cultural artefacts of the region, and a wealthy display of its surrounding rich marine and natural life.

http://www.wiredlens.com/bajau/bajau3.jpg

Rio Hondo, Taluksangay, and Campo Muslim are nearby Muslim villages built on stilts over water. Indigenous peoples include the Tau Sugs, Samals, and Yakans. The colourful Bajau, or sea gypsies, ply the waters of the Basilan Straight for fish, coral, and shells; they live on board their multi-hued vintas (sailboats) and take temporary shelter in stilt-raised homes during storms.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v298/rv_estardo/Rizal_Park-City_Hall.jpg

Valderosa St. is just beside the City Hall, walking thru this street gives you a feeling like you're in a time warp. Old houses and palm trees still stands along the street, it gives you a glimpse of the past. This street will lead you to Bayot Hotel now known as Lantaka Hotel by the sea.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v298/rv_estardo/Fort_Pilar_plan_-_1700s.jpg

The San José Fort in Zamboanga - later renamed "Nuestra Señora del Pilar"- was built in 1635 and was the most important on the island of Mindanao. It was demolished in the 17th century and rebuilt in 1718 as part of the defense system of the Visayan islands and other Spanish posts.

imo, theres still no competition for hotel room rates in the Philippines thats why hotel rate is slightly higher compare to Thailand, law of supply and demand. :)

If there's no competition, doesn't that mean the rates would shift downwards giving cheaper rates ?

If you don't have a lot of competition (which means not a lot of demand), how could you have higher rates ?
