Animo February 10th, 2006, 07:41 PM http://wikitravel.org/upload/en/1/12/Rp-map.png http://wikitravel.org/en/Philippines The Republic of The Philippines is a country in Southeast Asia. It is an archipelago of 7,107 islands and lies between Taiwan and Indonesia. Although often bypassed by travelers due to its distance from the Southeast Asian mainland, the Philippines is one of a few places in the world that can truly be described as 'beautiful'. Regions The Philippines is an archipelago composed of 7,107 islands. There are three main island groups which are then further subdivided into seventeen (17) regions. A total of 79 provinces and more than a hundred or so cities fall under these regions. The provinces are further composed of municipalities or towns. * Luzon The northernmost island group in the Philippines. It is comprised of the Ilocos Region, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR), Southern Tagalog Region (further divided into the CALABARZON and MIMAROPA regions), Bicol Region and the National Capital Region (NCR) more commonly known as Metro Manila. More than half the entire population of the Philippines resides in Luzon, in and around Metro Manila. * Visayas The central island group composed of the Western Visayas, Central Visayas and Eastern Visayas Regions. * Mindanao The southernmost island group in the Philippines composed of Zamboanga Peninsula, Northern Mindanao, Davao Region, SOCCSKSARGEN, CARAGA and the Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao (ARMM). Cities * Manila -- National capital. The Metropolitan Manila area includes several cities and municipalities to form one administrative body governed jointly by the local governments and the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA). * Cebu -- Also known as the Queen City of the South, Cebu is the first established indigenous settlement discovered by the west in the Philippines. For a short time before the re-dedication of Manila, Cebu City served as the capital of the far eastern territory claimed by Spain * Davao -- The largest city in the world in terms of land area. Relatively young when compared with Manila or Cebu, it has grown to become the economic and commercial hub of the southern island of Mindanao. Nearby you'll find the country's tallest mountain (Mount Apo), the endangered Philippine Eagle, and one of priciest orchids in the world (Waling-waling). * Baguio -- The country's summer capital, Baguio is a resort city in the mountains known for its cool climate, its Igorot culture and its strawberries. * Bacolod City -- The Cleanest and Greenest and the Most Livable City in the Philippines. The capital of the Province of Negros Occidental which is the Sugarbowl of the Philippines. Bacolod City serves as the entrance of the sugar-rich cities and towns of the Province. Visitor's facilities abound, modern means of in-land transport can take guests for business or leisure to any point in the island of Negros. Bacolod will charm you with the genuine warmth and hospitality of her people in harmony with their lilting melodious accent. The Bacoleños will delight you with food and cuisine that is as vigorous yet as subtle as the legendary Ilonggo gentility and taste for the good life. * Zamboanga City -- "Little Spain" or "Cuidad de Flores" (City of Flowers), another gateway to the rich island of Mindanao. Visiting Zamboanga will really fascinate a visitor as everyone speaks Chavacano, a Creole form of Spanish. Like is beautiful vintas, delicious sardines and breath-taking beaches, Zamboanga is rich in color and diversity. From the Yakan Tribes, to the Muslim families, to the old Spanish families to the Chinese businessmen, "Zamboanga Hermosa" it will always be called. jbkayaker12 February 12th, 2006, 06:15 AM ** jbkayaker12 February 13th, 2006, 01:46 AM ** normandb February 13th, 2006, 02:04 AM OMG, That underwater shot is so amazing. Almost every single one of them is virtually unknown. The 7000-odd islands that comprise the Philippines are the forgotten islands of southeast Asia. Off the main overland route and with a recent history of martial law and endemic corruption, the country has struggled to attract tourists in similar numbers to many of its southeast Asian neighbours. However, most of the Philippines is laidback, stable and relatively safe. The locals are, by and large, an exceptionally friendly and helpful bunch. On top of this, transport is cheap, the food is good, accommodation is plentiful and (for the monolinguistic) English is widely spoken. © Lonely Planet http://www.lonelyplanet.com/worldguide/destinations/asia/philippines allan_dude March 4th, 2006, 09:06 PM ... allan_dude March 4th, 2006, 09:12 PM ... allan_dude March 4th, 2006, 09:14 PM ... allan_dude March 4th, 2006, 09:21 PM ... allan_dude March 4th, 2006, 10:11 PM ... allan_dude March 4th, 2006, 10:15 PM ... allan_dude March 4th, 2006, 10:28 PM ... allan_dude March 4th, 2006, 10:45 PM ... allan_dude March 4th, 2006, 10:56 PM ... allan_dude March 4th, 2006, 11:05 PM ... allan_dude March 4th, 2006, 11:59 PM ... sk March 5th, 2006, 12:10 AM so beautiful.....phillipines is such a beautiful and charming country!!!!! allan_dude March 5th, 2006, 12:21 AM ... allan_dude March 5th, 2006, 12:23 AM ... Well-known for its natural beauty and grandeur, the 320-feet high waterfalls is also the primary source of power for the city's industries and the whole Mindanao region. Its waters flow through the Agus channel and come from the Lake Lanao located in Marawi City. Although 90% of the waters are used to power the hydroelectric plant, the cascades still look majestic. The falls is a main tourist attraction in the Philippines. For educational tours, arrangements can be made with the local National Power Corporation (NPC) officials at its office in Ditucalan. allan_dude March 15th, 2006, 07:24 AM http://static.flickr.com/42/112757583_a491bd6998.jpg?v=0 http://static.flickr.com/54/112746986_fe5dcea348.jpg?v=0 http://static.flickr.com/39/112761835_848308e7ba.jpg?v=0 The Tinago Falls is one of the main tourist attractions in Iligan, a city known as the City of Majestic Waterfalls. Tinago is a Filipino word meaning "hidden", the falls being hidden in a deep ravine. Trekking to the falls requires approximately 500 descending steps called the winding staircase. It is said that Tinago Falls is a sanctuary for weary souls seeking to commune with nature. The trip to the falls actually exposes you to a variety of wildlife. Today, the trail is refurbished into a wildlife park hosting different species of wild animals. The falls is approximately 240-feet high, its very cold waters cascading beautifully into a deep and calm basin-like pool which appears like a blue-colored lagoon. Under the falls is a small cave where people can enter and listen to the rumbling waters. The foot of the falls is a very ideal place for swimming. The place also has man-made swimming pools for children. It is truly a majestic place that resounds an atmosphere of serenity, a perfect escape from the noisy metropolitan. allan_dude March 15th, 2006, 07:29 AM http://static.flickr.com/39/112750192_ecac8e7e9e.jpg?v=0 Dodiongan Falls is a 20 metre (65 ft) high waterfall located in Bonbonon barangay, 14.5 km away from Iligan City in Lanao del Norte province of the Philippines. The area is often touted as a tourist destination for nature lovers travelling in the Phillipines, and at the bottom of the falls is a pool which is advertised as being ideal for swimming. allan_dude March 15th, 2006, 07:35 AM http://static.flickr.com/54/112757584_638d971bfe.jpg?v=0 http://static.flickr.com/51/112757585_7d3ccfb2b5.jpg?v=0 http://static.flickr.com/49/112757582_8667a89271.jpg?v=0 allan_dude March 15th, 2006, 07:48 AM http://static.flickr.com/51/112759877_406c2fbd91.jpg?v=0 Street Dancing http://static.flickr.com/56/112759879_f3a1da5698.jpg?v=0 http://static.flickr.com/44/112759881_6f4f0187be.jpg?v=0 http://static.flickr.com/48/112759880_83e4b42228.jpg?v=0 The Grind! The island is divided into three provinces: Samar province, Northern Samar, and Eastern Samar. These three provinces, along with the provinces on nearby island of Leyte are part of the Eastern Visayas region. EASTERN SAMAR is one of the six provinces in Region Vlll, Eastern Visayas, situated in the eastern part of the island of Samar. The entire east coast of the province faces the Philippine Sea that forms part of the Pacific Ocean. Eastern Samar's other boundaries are: Northern Samar to the north; Samar (formally Western Samar) to the west; and to the south is the Leyte Gulf (that merges further south with the Surigao Strait) which separates Samar from the island of Leyte. Borongan, the provincial capital, is situated approximately 550 air-kilometers southeast of Manila and around 65 air-kilometers northeast of Tacloban City, Leyte, which is the regional capital. Eastern Samar has diverse habitats, mostly forests, forests over limestone, forests over ultra basic rocks, lowlands evergreen rainforests, mangrove forests, caves, rivers and waterfalls. Consider these botanical statistics, it is one of the 18 Centers of Plant Biodiversity in the country with a total of 2,400 species of flowering plants including 406 endemic species, 40 of which are only found here. It is also one of nine Endemic Birds Areas in the Philippines (according to Birdlife International). 197 bird species have been recorded, including 50 endemics. There are thirty-nine species of mammals, 25 reptiles and 12 amphibians recorded in the island AND it is considered one of the 200 eco-regions in the world vital in preserving the Earths biodiversity (according to the World Wildlife Fund). Nature loving tourists will marvel at this unspoilt beauty, a truly undiscovered paradise awaits you Tourist Attractions by Municipality The tourism industry in Eastern Samar is in its infancy, which for those travellers that prefer to seek out the hidden jewels, look no further.
