Summer in Greece
The Sunday Times February 05, 2006
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,2100-2023246,00.html

Something is sizzling at the end of the Balkan peninsula, and it’s not all souvlaki. Greece emerged as one of last year’s hottest destinations, and this summer promises to be even hotter. Patras, a 2006 European Capital of Culture, is brimming with exhibitions and performances by artists from around the world. Mykonos reigns supreme as the capital of cool in the Med. The Ionian, a sea of emerald coasts and islands, villas and yachts, is Europe’s latest swan-around riviera for the rich and famous. Sleek, post-Olympics Athens is being transformed by its dynamo mayor, Dora Bakoyannis, into a year-round festival city, the Edinburgh of the south.

There’s a renaissance in Greek cuisine. And, although archeologists are biting their nails, diving holidays are set to boom now that a new law has opened up Greece’s previously restricted seas, filled with 3,000 years’ worth of shipwrecked treasures.

A land as old as Greece has as many layers as baklava. Underneath all the recent buzz, the reasons to go are as honeyed as ever: the drop-dead beauty of 1,000 islands, the exquisite art, the Zorba-ish zest for life, all contemplated while sipping an ouzo as the sun sinks into the sea. Don’t miss out.

Awesome thread. I fell in love with Greece when I went there with school and I can't wait to get back this summer with my friends and a backpack.

Greece is always worth a trip - and stay! My personal recommandations: Crete! Go by your own and take some bus trips around the island off the beaten track - meet friendly people (among the nicest in Europe if not THE nicest) and eat the best mediterranean food in perfect athmosphere.

Take a trip to Santorini and discover it yourself - don't go by travel agencies and tours, they just want the money and don't offer you anything you can't do by yourself. People are helpful and open...

That goes also for if you want to go somewhere but you don't know where: take a ferry in Pyrräus and get in contact with some people: they will tell you for sure what is a perfect destination for you and why ;) Ermoupolis is also worth a trip and I heard Athens got MUCH better recently!

Hi everybody. I'm visiting Athens, Santorini and Mykonos at the end of this month. Does anybody know how the weather will be? I've been told that is a good season to visit because this places are not crowded but I'm worry about the weather and what kind of clothes to take with me. I live in Montreal and right now the weather is around -17c so anything over 15c will be really nice.

Well recently, there has been snow all over Greece, but the weather is certainly clearing.
I think we will see temps in the mid 10s.

It will probrably be about 15 degrees celcius for Athens most of the month, so I recommend a bringing Warm clothes, but make sure you have Jackets and what not. Just pack for both wintery and summery days haha.

As for the islands, they wouldnt be too much higher, perhaps a few degrees warmer.
