Durbsboi January 31st, 2007, 07:27 AM Well it looks plain because its in 2D, I know you feel that since its CT it needs to be more "out there" but I like it, its got that stern look to it.
PS: Im also working on a hotel for the Durban beach front, by the Pavillion & also an indoor arena for Durbs, but little bit over the top compared to the Rod Laver design submitted by Mo, just pulling my hair out at the moment figuring out how to render on this blody Auto Cad 2007 :gaah:

DB---ive got some over the top designs for the durban indoor arena..but thought i would just stick to what would actually work best for durban
Durbsboi February 1st, 2007, 09:13 AM Who the hell is the Vancouver Whitecaps ? Anyway, you can post your over the top designs, its cool, this is just a Idea's thread, would love to see them.
Here's some pics of the indoor arena that Im designing, not complete as yet, it wont have a retractable roof, but it will have a glass roof, which will have blinds to limit or completely remove natural light from entering the arena, it will be fully airconditioned. Designed for a tennis court, it can also fit a basket ball court & also an indoor soccer court. This indoor arena is perfect for concerts or shows.

thryve February 2nd, 2007, 10:27 PM Okay... the design continues to evolve:
http://img254.imageshack.us/img254/884/cttowerofficialbwvx9.png (Older Design Concept)
So, guys, is this any closer to what you'd want? (I know the original was too plain for your tastes :))
http://img377.imageshack.us/img377/2060/cttowerrevised4vr8.png
http://img128.imageshack.us/img128/3346/cttowerrevised5labelsjj0.png
Be honest! Let me know what you'd have in mind. At this point I have too MANY ideas... haha. I just need to narrow down.
thryve February 3rd, 2007, 12:40 AM The other, final possibility is that it could go in this direction...(SEE IMAGE BELOW). The name in this case would be "Beacon Tower".
I much prefer this design (it's very Vancouverish, really) and I think it would actually suit Cape Town better. It's more friendly, whereas the other tower is more "Joburg" with its hard lines and imposing attitude.
Obviously the ground floor needs to be reworked and this is just a rough idea at the moment. Note the large balconies on the sides of the building, and the sky terraces. Also note the orange glow at the top of the tower that would give the tower its name, as a beacon for people to come to the CBD.

ClingFoil February 14th, 2007, 06:35 AM there was a sharp corner in his brain
where a neglected space used to be
fat lot of good that did any body
and his mind kept on walking into it
which caused a lot of dents
in his thinking and explained
why all the buildings he designed
were so prone to having sad people
working in them
for low pay and little job satisfaction
and, if it could possibly be worse still,
for bosses wholly manufactured out of that lo-grade chauvy bullish material
you can only buy in some cheap china shops
recently I heard he had managed to bend the corner
and was working on a new kind of arnica relief-crete for
standardised paving, a kind of bureaucracy medication you
get for filling in too many forms and being born into
an entire society with heriditary sharp corner disorder
Durbsboi February 14th, 2007, 07:19 AM Hey Cling Foil, welcome to the SA Fourm on SCC,
Why dont you tell us more about urself in the Intro Thread.
are you a poet?
thryve February 14th, 2007, 06:37 PM Clingfoil, can you give us some info. about what you just posted? Does it belong in this thread?
ClingFoil February 14th, 2007, 09:42 PM My honest response to the big block thing with sharp corners proposed for the most beautiful city on earth. I think it belongs here in this thread. I think the building is far more dangerous than the poem, too. An honest opinion was called for. Will it be taken?
thryve February 14th, 2007, 10:14 PM ^^ Boxiness is timeless. I think the most beautiful city on earth would deserve a timeless symbol, not something tacky or overdesigned.
It's just a tower idea, nothing that will be built, so don't worry about it.

What a relief. I am happy you are having ideas. Even imagination has its confines. Boxiness timeless you say? Like coffins. Free the people. Swim in the sea more. Get out of that packing crate. Your mind may be made up now but you could surprise yourself and suddenly have a complete change of heart. I would stop listening to people who praise you all the time if I were you. Challenge yourself to do something different. Look at yourself in a mirror. Look at your whole body from toe to top. Timeless hey? Boxy? I don't think so.
thryve February 14th, 2007, 11:11 PM Can you not post everything in poetry? I am a writer myself and I appreciate such writing, but on the message boards it just isn't going to work out well for you.

there is plenty space towards the kings park stadium side, the current track just needs to be replaced, its too small anyway.

It still amazed me when cities/ olympic/commonwealth hosts choose to build overpriced venues when excellent tensile membrane options are available and properly even better, still kills me when cities do not make use of temporary venues or use the membrane option...

Mo Rush March 18th, 2007, 11:43 PM oh so that is where culemburg is! surely it is going to be needed for shipping and industry considering the ct port constraints?
Thats what Irwin gave as his reason for making it a "no-go" for a stadium, but insiders say the site won't be used till after 2010 and instead will somehow be worked into the waterfront, some transport planners suggest moving cape town train station to the culemborg site. ill try and find out whats the latest.
The most recent version of the 2010 business plan indicates that the site will be used as a park and walk/ride site during 2010. Large open space on the edge of the CBD so it is certainly well located.
Previous proposals for the site:
* World Expo - proposed site for the Millenium Expo, but instead CT chose to bid for the Olympic Games. The entire site stretching all the way to observatory was to become one giant park area for the expo. The theme was biodiversity or something along those lines.
*Casino pre 1996 by some French Guy
*Media Village Cape Town 2004 Olympic Plan
*Transnet Exhibition Centre Cape Town 2004 Olympic Plan
*Casino bid lost out to Grand West
*Stadium proposal, first ruled out by Mfekto "im a fat cow" which included plans for low cost housing and world cup stadium
* Stadium site option - turned down by Irwin for future expansion of the harbour.
Durbsboi March 19th, 2007, 08:34 AM Wavey buildings
dysan1 March 19th, 2007, 08:00 PM I still reckon it will be used for port related activities. With the V&A wanted to expand on all the other available land CT's port infrastructure will be serverely compromised if they do not have the culemburg site available to them, which would have serious economic growth consequences for the western cape region. While the land may be strategic for stadia, or cbd expansion, i believe the port in this instance needs to be put first.

Unfortunately it does not seem to be going in that direction. At the moment the V&A and port activities are doing just fine even with the planned expansion of the V&A, the port authorities are certainly in discussion with the city since the CTICC expansion onto the customs house site touches the table bay harbour area, so the area next to the highway closest to the harbour will need to undergo some restructuring to maximize its efficiency and use of space if its to play a substantial role in the development of the city

Pule June 13th, 2007, 05:15 PM Guys, you all have been coming up with this beutiful ideas in this thread but I think we have all excluded or may be ignored what spoils all the good developments and the improvements that are happening around our cities and surburbs. In Jozi and its surbubs, most specifcally Fourways and Randburg, you find plenty of street traders who makes the place looks dirty.
We know that our people need employment and we need to appriciate the fact that these people are doing something posetive instead of being criminals. One thing I would like us to do is to come up with the design of hawker stalls. I believe that every second street in the CBD should have a hawker stall that is clean and maintained everytime. Good examples of hawker stall that are run properly are the newspaper ones.
Mo Rush June 13th, 2007, 05:54 PM As much as it is about having hawkers and creating a vibe, its about creating a culture and providing resources to clean up and check up on hawkers
Mosi-oa-Tunya June 13th, 2007, 08:48 PM shit I forgot about this place!

Good going on that! Maybe you can get it going with a developer.
Durbsboi June 14th, 2007, 09:06 AM lol, will submit the idea to them when Im done.
Pule I hear what you saying mate, but its up to government to employ the police force to make the street hawkers stick to their designated points. We got buisness's in town & have numerous illegal street vendor's, the police patrol the area everyday, nothing is being done about them, the litter like you cannot believe, everyday at 6pm when I leave for home, there is a rotten smell in the streets because of kilo's & kilo's of rotting fruit & veg in the gutters, boxes of the stuff is lying on the roads, but credit to DSW because by morning the streets are squeaky clean. So you see thats the problem, they feel they can just dump what ever gunk they want because by morning its all gone!
anyway, this is just an 'Ideas' thread, for those whom want to showcase their idea's whether it be strutural or not.

Durbsboi August 21st, 2007, 03:16 PM Standing at 133meter's high, with 32 floors, this is my redesign of the scrapped San Raphael Tower which was supposed to be built at the Point Water front, sticking to strict height restrictions & area architecture code, this is what I managed to come up with. what you guys think?
The 1st 10 floors make up the hotel segment of the building & at level 11, is the pool deck & roof garden.
The rest of the floors up to level 32 are apartments with the last 3 level being double volume penthouses.
In the back of the building is a 9 level under cover car park for both hotel & residents use.

thryve September 6th, 2007, 01:08 AM For Durban CBD:
Any changes you would suggest, I'd be glad to try out. The base isn't quite where I want it yet. I think the retail @ street level needs to be more open and airy. But anyways, the towers are pretty much where I want them.
This is a small version for now:
http://img258.imageshack.us/img258/504/ethekwinidesignchanges2di6.png
Durbsboi September 6th, 2007, 09:09 AM Hey Thryvy boy, nice to see you roaming in our parts again :)
Nice idea bru, looks cool, esp the bridge part, with regards to the street level retail, I would have it just like that, with full glass frontage & some sort of cothing shops, the 2nd level is where I would have the open airy cafe's. Durbans CBD's esp the West/ Smith district is to hussle bussle to have street cafe's, one will want to get away from the business to enjoy a nice brunch, etc..
Im also planning some stuff for the Durban CBD, but focusing more on this piece of land
http://i12.tinypic.com/63w2b2w.jpg
A "CBD" extension if I can call it that, it will be more of an up market part of the CBD with high rise buildings allowed in the central points of the plot allowing buildings to rise as high as 400m, will post renders when I get time, still busy with canals & brigdes for the area. Although it doesnt look all that big, belive me, this land is HUGE! & its just lying idol there.
She will be the center of attraction for this place

dysan1 September 6th, 2007, 12:42 PM nice to see your ideas guys! and welcome back the SA forum andy, its been ages bud!
I like both designs. DB is right that street cafes on the busy streets of central durban wont work. street level cafes should rather be in the internal piazza's of the buildings like old mutual are doing with their new dev and 378 west has nearly completed.
Regards the centrum site, i think you are correct in that area becoming more upmarket. it would link well with the cities plans for the area from the icc to the beachfront, which is also being redeveloped into a mixed use zone with street level retail/offices and resi.
They are going to enlargen the park next to the workshop (almost double it in size) and have plans for 2 municipal buildings there and the ICT complex which is nearing planning approval level.
thryve September 7th, 2007, 03:23 AM Nice vision for Durban, durbsboi, and thanks for the feedback. I look forward to seeing your design ideas for that CBD expansion concept you have.
So, Dysan, I know you take your beautiful city (Durban) seriously, I am curious to know what you think about my tower and if you'd let it go up in your city's CBD. I know it's not typical Durban style, maybe I can make some changes??
I actually designed it in the current Toronto style. I've never really done Durban-style towers very well :ohno: haha.
-thryve
p.s. I am working on a new tower at this point. I'm excited about this one as well.
Durbsboi September 7th, 2007, 09:32 AM Thanks, well I had this whole idea of Doing Durban in 3D, but I dont think I have enough ram on my pc to render it, plus Im not even 2% complete, so scratched that idea off & started with this one, planning on doing each building seperatly & adding it to the master plan.
dysan1 September 7th, 2007, 09:38 AM ^^ nice! will be good to see.
Andy.. I like the design, depending on exactly where you wanted it there might be different changes needed. if it were in the cbd proper around city hall then it may need some more natural finishes on the lower level to help it blend in with the older buildings.
If it it were more on the Victoria embankment, thyen i'd say its great the way it is.
Mo Rush September 7th, 2007, 02:56 PM really impressive DB..very stylish
thryve September 9th, 2007, 09:09 PM To be located in Cape Town's historical CBD, (and only steps from Mandela Rhodes Place) this development known as insp!re, includes the creation of a small parkette where residents of the tower, as well as the public, can enjoy a quiet space to sit under the shade of trees and read a book. At the base of the tower, a small patio cafe overlooks the parkette. A rear laneway from an adjacent development provides vehicular access to an underground parking garage.

thryve September 10th, 2007, 12:16 AM For Durban CBD:
http://img258.imageshack.us/img258/504/ethekwinidesignchanges2di6.png
^^ I've decided its base needs major work. An African touch, in fact.
I feel like doing some major project, I'm tempted to say Johannesburg, but if you have any large city blocks in your CBD extension project, durbsboi, I'd love to design a multi-tower complex for Durban. Then you could render it into your software using my design maybe? If not, I'll make Jozi something massive.
Also, any feedback on my slim tower for Cape Town? I'm excited about it, even if it was also designed using a primitive program, haha.
Durbsboi September 10th, 2007, 09:52 AM really impressive DB..very stylish
Thanks, took idea's from this building in the CBD,
Its a classy design, so I thought it would be cool if it could be alot taller.
so 93 storeys should be tall enough ;)

Thryve, nice work, the fact that is doesnt make use of the whole plot is cool, with the trees & pavement area like its own park.

Durbsboi September 11th, 2007, 08:48 AM looks cool thryve, I would presume the cafe's will be on the pool deck area?
Whats going into the bridge?

U can see the workshop to on the top right corner, still have to add more buildings to this drawing though.
thryve September 11th, 2007, 09:49 PM wow, good work durbsboi!!! Keep it up. Just keep giving your developments a name and potential location for us so we can differentiate them over time. This way, we can see your ideas progress :)
The cafes would be at ground level, because of the very wide sidewalk (or 'pavements' as you'd say.) Maybe there would be just one, and there is room for two other retail tenants, perhaps clothing stores. There is office space and amenity space in the two floors above. The skybridge is part of the tower's amenities area, which includes a spa and small movie room.
thryve September 11th, 2007, 09:51 PM p.s.
I am now resuming work on a long-forgotten project of mine. It consists of repainting/redeveloping the Cape Town CBD Woolworths department store and propping up two condo towers above it/ "on its roof" so to speak.
Any ideas or requests on a type of project for me to design? Just tell me... I love having a set of criteria to work with. :)

Thanx, So far Im calling this project "CBD Extension" no proper name as yet, but want something classy & rich, because thats what this district is going to be, it will still retain the park, but in time to come the Workshop will be demolish (not completely) & renovated into a bigger complex. Also it will have a parkade located opp the Exibition center, with an underground train system that will operate from the parkade, hence people that will work in this "CBD" wont need to drive to their respective building but can park at the common parkade, take the lift to the station underground & catch the tube to their building. Therefore there wont be major traffic conjestion in this area. But the big building the picture which I call for now "Megatropolis" will have its own underground parking as well since it has 93 floors, I felt there was a need for it to have its own.
The bridge aspect of your project sounds cool.
The wide pavements sounds cool for the street cafe's & thats what we need in SA, might have to errect a mini fence around them so you dont get morons taking short cuts through the tables, lol.

Backlit and LED-lit advertisements and billboards as well as one "ticker" screen.
A 12-screen megaplex cinema.
Street-level retail as well as indoor shopping space.
Bowling alleys, a large arcade, and food court.
Underground linkage to surrounding buildings.
That looks awesome! SA needs a place like this, in the city center.
thryve September 14th, 2007, 08:12 PM I'm putting some final details on the design now, such as the cladding detail, etc. It's not on a high level of architecture, but the idea is to provide a 21st century urban/entertainment thrill and shopping.

Durbsboi November 23rd, 2007, 02:40 PM haha, thanx!
Mo Rush November 23rd, 2007, 03:23 PM Cape Town International Tennis Centre
Location: Cape Town Central Park, Green Point
The WP Tennis club will fund the construction of a tennis centre along with a main stadium centre court creating a tennis node at the south western edge of Cape Town Central Park.
My proposal for the design of the Centre Court Stadium is divided up into various phases/modes.
Phase 1: 2010 Mode
This phase will consolidate the courts around the tennis node and include improved public access, landscaped walkways and the construction of the Central Park security node. A basic 2,500 seat permanent Centre Court stadium bowl will be constructed to host tennis events/tournaments. The need for any large capacity does not currently exist. The stadium bowl is about 3m below the ground level, reducing the height impact of the first phase. Modular VIP and media areas are constructed when and if needed. A concourse constructed below ground level will run around the stadium bowl providing office space and player room/facilties. Costly and complex ventilation systems might be required and the concourse would then be constructed on ground level below the stadium bowl.
Phase 2: ATP/WTA event mode
To host a possible WTA/ATP event. 5-7,000 temporary seats will be constructed around the main stadium bowl. A podium will be constructed around the top level of the permanent stadium bowl to accommodate the temporary expansion. This single level podium would remain as a legacy only once a major WTA/ATP events is secured and will provide permanent VIP/media space. After the event, temporary seating is removed
Phase 3: Olympic mode
In Olympic mode the main stadium would seat 10,000 spectators and a decision would be made whether the capacity expansion would be permanent, temporary or semi-permanent.
Three options would exist:
- Permanent mode: Additional 7,500 stadium seats taking the capacity to 10,000. A roof constructed along with improved stadium circulation.
- Temporary mode: Additional 7,500 seats are temporary and a fabric roof is added. After the Games the temporary seats is removed and the fabric roof is reconstructed above the permanent 2,500 seat bowl
- Semi-permanent: A combination of permanent and temporary seats are used to increase capacity to 10,000. A permanent roof is constructed and temporary seats are removed after the Games, providing office/conference space with views across Cape Town Central Park.
Images soon.

thryve February 2nd, 2008, 05:45 AM Hey guys,
I designed this retail/office/residential project for Cape Town's CBD.
Now your job is to be the design review panel, as South African citizens or residents of Cape Town especially. I will make changes accordingly, over time, as your requests direct me and we negotiate the design.
http://img507.imageshack.us/img507/4021/capetowncomplexthesailsdfgdr3.jpg
"THE SAILS"
This project is slated for the land where the current Woolworths department store is in central Cape Town. It consists of two residential towers, and one shorter office tower. There is also much varied retail at the base level.
Concerns at this point:
-architect wasn't aware of the size of the plot of land; the complex needs to be adjusted, including the repositioning of towers on the podium, and the downsizing of the podium
-the size of the podium overpowers the pedestrian-only street that runs along one side of the Woolworths site

Most of my projects are based on actual pieces of land, mainly in Durban. This one lies not far from where I work on Florida Road, a very busy & vibey end of Florida Road that is. Currently occupying the plot is an old house/ apartment block, looks like an old age home. Really spoils its surroundings. It doesnt do the area any good. So my proposal is to tear it down & build a trendy apartment block that will suit the area. The actual building is 5 floors, with Ground floor being the parking garage & space for 1 shop, pref bar/ restaurant. The rest of the floors are apartments with level 2 housing the Pool deck. Each Apartment has 2 bedrooms, both of them ensuites, also with fully spec'd kitchen, dinning room & Lounge. Ideal for a family of 4.

Durbsboi July 28th, 2008, 03:03 PM Gateway Towers
Floors: 86
Height: 375m
Type: Mixed development (Hotel/ Offices)
Gateway Theatre of shopping is located in Umhlanga's New Town Center, a buzzing new area in Durban with numerous
new developments being launched at a weekly basis. The latest phase is the ridge with Marriot Hotel International
already being 1 of the big tenants to the ridge. Also Westin Grand Hotels have said to be planning a world class
hotel for the area. Gateway shopping center was the original catalyst for the area & I felt it was lacking something.
Perhaps office towers? There are plans to extend shopping center with a hotel & so forth but I doubt it will be anything
as daring as this.
The towers rise from the exisiting undercovered parking lot of the shopping center. The unique futuristic styling of the building
complements the design of the center as well. The center being the largest in the southern hemisphere needs something like this
to make it an extra special landmark. The towers which are twins are both 81 storeys, with the 5 floors of parking making it 86. the bridge that links the towers houses 2 restaurants & a bar at the 3rd level. The hotel occupy's tower 2 whilst tower 1 is strictly office space.

herb21 October 24th, 2009, 11:37 PM Sketchup can be amazing if you know how to use it and add enough plugins (ie get a decent render, section cut plane and a few others) Otherwise revit is nice but very complex (read its a bitch to use unless you are really good / design simple buildings) and only really advantageous for non design reasons 3Ds Max is great though (sorta like sketchup on crack). Sketch up pro is much better than sketchup btw and most people I know prefer SU 6 over 7 (far more plugins). But problem with all these is they cost alot.
Of course autocad and photoshop are basically de facto and trusty hand.
You can try ArchiCad if you want but Its kinda different.

bashuple December 1st, 2009, 12:54 PM Being ignored by a group or organisation that you belong to could tantamount to bullying. If one posts anything in this forum and you expect participation or even appreciation by members, but you're just ignored, it's sad and absurd. I am south African who appreciate a great deal of work done in this forum. I spent countless time viewing photos and comments posted by other people. I have tried to reach out to people in this forum in many ways, but it looks like it's way beyond me. I am not an expect or an architect in anything posted here, but just a lay person with vested interest in the development of our country. Maybe i should just be a bystander and watch silently. I tried, good luck and adios.

Brian.K May 6th, 2010, 10:29 AM My Development Idea #1...
Name: Ansteys Tower
Use: High end residential units anchored by a Woolworths food supermarket

In Depth:
I always find myself fantasizing about downtown Johannesburg being not only somewhat revitalized, but densifying and becoming an eclectic mix of old and new buildings. I imagine people of all colours, incomes, housing types, etc., living in the CBD, with people living in everything from the financial areas to previous residential neighbourhoods like Yeoville and Hillbrow/Berea.
One of my ideas would be to convert the Ansteys building into a beautiful landmark once again, with art deco condo flats, anchored by a large Woolworth's food market at the bottom. (I realize that large grocers/food supermarkets seem like a suburban idea, but downtowns really do need large ones too, if they want to have a downtown population of families as well as singles/couples.) I can see people walking down the street from their brand new glass condo tower to Woolworth's, with flowers outside on display along the exterior wall, and fresh produce on display.

Pros:
-would give sustinence for local population
-would encourage high downtown population
-would bring a landmark back to life
-would provide residential units
Cons:
-could put smaller grocers/ food markets at risk of going out of business (most downtown grocers tend to be small in the world's cities)
-would take up the pedestrian level along that whole stretch of the block with one use
Just an idea I recently had while fantasizing about central Johannesburg.
