I have some questions about Lissabon.

What's the better time to travel Lissabon: May or October? With 'better time' I mean that it is possible to have a nice beach holiday. Is the water still very cold in May or is it rainy in October?

Is it better to stay in Lissabon and go to the beaches in Cascais and Estoril or is it better to stay in a hotel in Cascais or Estoril and go to Lissabon for sightseeing? How are the connections from Lissabon to the beaches or Sintra?
Are Cascais and Estoril worth visiting on their own?

May definetely if u want to try beaches with some hot .. but best would be naturaly June/July/August/Setember
curiuosly October last year was preety good in terms of temperature but it´s not be sure of every year´
About the rest i don´t know what u´re planning to see, and the money ure willing to spend but i assume u want to see mainly Lisbon and then a couple of days in the outskirts, cascais and Sintra cost line right?
in this case u better "set up" ur base in Lisboet hotel then take the train either To cascais or Sintra
The ride takes about 1 hour top (or less) to each destination so if u´re not willing to pay a hotel in those area train wiil serv very weel
Theres is LOTS of beaches in Cascais Line, that can be very crowded in Summer, not in May i think( u can use the train, some beaches have train stations preety close)
The best, more quiet and most beautiful beaches are in Sintra coast line, facing the atlantic, to go here u better rent a car..the setting is great but water may be a little cold in May
cascais/estoril are worth to visit, altough in Estoril theres a casino, a beach and that´s preety much it, cascais is far more interesting, the historil centre, the bay, the marina and it´s also "english friendly"
Sintra is also great.. if u have a chance take a look at the beaches

I would say May is a better month to spend in Lisbon and to visit surrounding areas.

You need to make 3 train changes plus a bus at the border!!

You better catch a train from Algeciras to Madrid, and then another train from Madrid to Lisbon. It is more expensive but faster!
