The tower on the right of the picture is the tallest in qatar now, still it did not reach the top floor yet, it will be 44 stories high, I doubt if it will be ready for the asian games.

All the players playing now are totally soaked! The handball match betweem Bahrain and Korea was just stopped a couple of minutes ago because water was leaking from the ceiling onto the court!

This looks more like 2004, not 2005. I was in doha in March and November 2005 and for sure there were more tall buildings than the above picture shows :)

Come on Massilia! They are not that bad! :lol: I find them charming, and they got a bit of history, since they were the first towers at the corniche. I hope they will let them be untouched. I always liked the Salam Towers, yes they are not that tall, but they are one of a kind.

This mix of towers is what seperates the doha skyline from the one in Dubai. I always thought Dubai's skyline was cheap looking, all tall buildings that looks like they are designed by Lego. Doha got the more sophisticated look.
They dont just build one weird looking tower after the other, it's a mix of all heights, and most of them does match each other more or less.

For me it's not possible to compare Doha and Dubai, cos they are so different.

doha is developing ... and while everybody thinks its competeing with abu dhabi ... I think it needs to beat Sharjah first ... since Sharjah is more dence than Doha ... sorry to say this ... but dubai, abudhabi and Sharjah are more dence than Doha ... MAN dont get me started with Sharjah! I live there now and the place is lags light years behind Dubai and Doha. First of all, apparently half the roads are not paved, parking is something not defined in the Sharjah dictionary, the roads are CRAP. It takes me a four wheel drive to get from the main road to my apartment entrace. God be with those who have saloons.

Sharjah is a nice place, dont get me wrong, its my second home; but saying that Doha is lagging is plain out WRONG.

loli think that covers up most of what i was to say but its not THAT dense doha has more commercial towers while sharjah has mainly residental towers and there not that high while doha is building 500m tall towers ?!

Sharjah is developing rapidly, with current Sharjah Ring road, King Faisal Street Bridges, and their recent road expansions. It is certainly more dense than Doha since its area is very limited. Plus, Qataris tend to complain a lot that anything is more beautiful than Doha since it can be quite boring. At least you guys have Dubai besides you ;)

I know the roads are being paved, but interior roads are non-existant--with the exception of some of the roads in the middle part of Sharjah residential areas. Sharjah is the product of the over-inflation of Dubai housing, and is certainly benifiting from its neighbor's economy.

I love the color of doha sea ... greenish ... oh yea .. regarding sharjah's roads ... mans its about time and sharjah will have really good roads ... sharjah is not very ambitios ... it doesnt have dubai's dreams ... sharjah's ruler is more into cultural educational issues .. and is maintaining an islamic atmosphere in sharjah ... and with such atmosphere u cant grow like dubai ... and u cant attract investments and bussniss men ... even tourists dont prefer sharjah bcz no alcohol is allowed... and actually we do love this islamic atmosphere ... bcz for fun we go to dubai ... but dont want to live in dubai and raise our kids there .. sharjah is the place ... and since u live in sharjah right now ... the governments plan for sharjah is to have roads with non stop movment ... if u noticed there are lots of diversions thesedays in the city ... and the plan is to change the whole network by 2010...

^^^reminds me there are even worse diversions in Doha loooooool and we also have a plan by 2009 to compleatly change the networks most R/A's are to be changed to Intersections ,interchanges , underpasses and bridges !!!

Believe me, the diversions in Sharjah are MUCH MUCH MUCH MUCH better than Doha's.... Dont get me started on that... Dubai's diverions on the other hand, are better than out main roads. :lol:

i agree with Halla Walla......even though i dont really likke sharjaahh......its depressingg....but it is true.....Sharjah's roads and its new dieversions are better than Doha's........

Actually the corniche will be even more crowded than that...with the Barwa center (11 towers!) on the left of the Bavaria, the 200m+ coming up next to the embassies (Barjeel, Bin Samikh, Aayan, etc), the Al-Quds Tower (around 100F) there too, it will be really dense!

It makes me sad to see the Qipco tower not next to the sea shore and kinda hidden though :( Love this tower!

I love that Doha is focusing on its waterfront... unlike a certain other city in the region (cough cough) which builds in the middle of the desert, and creates hilariously shaped artificial islands.

whoa !! i can see dubai towers, i can see the pearl qatar (towers), i can see west bay litrelly growing !!!

oh and i can see the Islamic Museum Park !!! lovely addition to the corniesh it also has some kind of mini corniesh of its own (currently the park is closed...) i can see palms all around the "mini" corniesh.. i can see alot of young trees planted around the park... and some flowers & plants all around... but i noticed that the end of the park the lets call it "peninsula" dosent seem to have anything on it.... only mountains of sand and rock.... with some kind of... board ???! why would there be advertisment over there ??? can anyone see what it says ??? anyone ???

I am travelling Qatari airlines through Doha soon and was wanting to stop off for a couple of days. What Hotels would you recommend (I have a pretty healthy budget) and what would you recommend doing? Would you recommend playing golf?

I am travelling Qatari airlines through Doha soon and was wanting to stop off for a couple of days. What Hotels would you recommend (I have a pretty healthy budget) and what would you recommend doing? Would you recommend playing golf?

One of the best new hotels to open is the W, located opposite City Centre in the heart of the towers area. The Intercontinental, Ritz Carlton, and Sheraton are all also excellent, if a bit pricey. If you want something a bit cheaper, there's the Movenpick, also located in the towers area.

As for things to do, Golf this time of year isn't the best sport ever... waay too hot. If your coming in November/December, it should be fine though. A visit to the souqs is a must, lots to see and do there... if you can arrange it you could also go with a tour company out to the inland sea, which is reached through the sand dunes.

Pay a visit to a few of the malls as well, especially Villagio, beautiful mall even if you just want to have a look and not do any shopping.

Well, you have to see Souq Waqif and have a shisha there or perhaps dinner.
If your traveling in Ramadan, visit any one of the Ramadan Tents in the hotels having music and a full buffet. There are malls like Villagio (the best mall) or others like City Center and Landmark.

I have only been to the Middle East in December before (DBX) so have never experienced the real heat -I am travelling in a fortnight so might knock the golf on the napper. I really want to visit Oman so may do that in the winter and play some golf in Doha.

Halawala - like the Avatar - I ran the LDN marathon earlier this year and had a Palestinian sweatband on my wrist and got lots of positive comments/feedback. I am proud to be a Londoner as we welcome people from all civilsed countries - and Israel also. Oops I might be in the naughty corner after 3 posts ;-)
