The pit below is for one of the two Arriva 44 towers. There are a large number of cranes in this picture. Wow! Virtually all of these are condo towers. To the left, there is a pinch of the new stampede casino and prep for the expansion of the RoundUp Centre. Next to the stampede casino will be a new hotel, but there haven't been too many details about that quite yet.

Nice shots by surrealplaces (ssp).

The Bow would be somewhat front and centre from this first angle upon completion.

Another angle, with some of the buildings further West.

http://img179.imageshack.us/img179/6711/image182za6.jpg

And to round things out, a slightly older picture from Wikipedia - taken by Chuck Szmurlo. The tip of the Calgary tower, just visible from behind the dense DT, is 627' (191m)

That is an interesting comment, but I think it depends on what pieces you're considering. Just the singular building, or the engagement and enhancement of overall project to its context? Using the more thoughtful and comprehensive methods of evaluation, the Bow is truly exceptional.

I'm hearing vague rumours of a supertall in Calgary?

Something along the lines of:

- A 69 storey office building at roughly 1049' and 995 000sf
- A 64 Storey Hotel at 723' and 1 million sf
and most impressively
- A 109 storey residential building at 1138' and 1 800 000sf

For those imperially challenged like me, that's:

69 storey office = 320 m @ 92 400 sq.m
64 storey hotel = 220 m @ 92 900 sq.m
109 storey residential = 347 m @ 167 200 sq.m

These are vague rumours on a casino site on 17th & 1st. Do not, I repeat do not take any of what I say as being likely to happen. There might be something on the site I am hinting at, but don't expect the numbers quoted.

The thing i like about Calgary is that its not too big, and not too small.

Ten years ago was a quiet city, now it has expanded a lot as a result of people from rural areas moving here.

No, it's "expanded" as a result of people moving from EVERYWHERE, not only or even predominately from rural areas. Calgary had a higher rate of international immigration than did any US city in 2008 (and 2007, and yes that includes such iconic immigration magnets as NYC, SF and LA) and was only bested by Toronto and Vancouver on this measure in Canada.

It's also grown because of its very young population and consequent very high (by Canadian standards) birth rate.

Broadway Malyan appointed to Canadian city regeneration

http://i41.tinypic.com/2ega03p.jpg

Firm will be masterplanner for new community in Calgary for 12,000 people

Broadway Malyan has been appointed masterplanner to regenerate part of Calgary in Canada.

The firm will be responsible for 55 ha of land in the middle of the city, which hosted the Winter Olympics back in 1988.

City planning officials want to build a new community in the East Village, on the edge of the central business district, which will be home for up to 12,000 people. It will focus on new arts and cultural facilities.

Calgary Municipal Land Corporation made the appointment after plumping for Broadway Malyan ahead of two local firms and Gensler.

Broadway Malyan director of masterplanning and urban design Phil Bonds said: “This appointment opens up new horizons for us.”

The Telus World of Science in Calgary will build a new $160 million dollar facility because the existing centre is too small.

The Telus World of Science and Creative Kids Museum on the western edge of downtown Calgary can’t accommodate the growing numbers of visitors.

Attendance has more than doubled to 304,000 visitors annually in the past decade.

With growth expected to continue, construction of a new 130,000 square foot facility is in the early stages.

Cohos Evamy is doing the design work.

“We are in the design development stage, which is coming to a conclusion and going into the construction drawing stages,” said Barry Crean, project director at the Telus World of Science.

“This will be let to the market in a series of tender packages. The first one will be stripping and grading the site. We are aiming to be in the ground in April.”

Crean said the start time is dependent on all the grants that will finance construction of the project and an environmental assessment.

The City of Calgary has committed $20 million in land and another $20 million in cash.

The provincial and federal governments are providing $40 million each.

The remaining $40 million will be raised from corporate and private donors.

“We are looking at $30 million being spent during the course of construction, which should be completed by September 2011, but we hope to take occupation in June,” said Crean.

“It is estimated that there will be the equivalent of 124 person years of employment in professional services and 325 man years of construction work. There will be 250 workers on the site at the peak of construction.”

The site selection process began with 80 potential locations, but the choices were narrowed down to 22 possibilities.

A detailed analysis was performed on five possible sites.

“A city owned property north of the zoo was selected because it was closer to the city, transit, the zoo and the people who would use the facility,” Crean explained.

“This location also creates partnership opportunities with the zoo.”

The Calgary Zoo and the new Telus World of Science plan to share parking, use joint marketing, ticketing, maintenance and exhibit buildings.

The science centre’s brownfield site will also be considered part of the learning experience for students.

Crean said they are aiming to achieve LEED Silver certification, but they would like to get LEED Gold.

“It may not be possible because of the brownfield condition of the site, but it will be close,” he said.

“This was a former landfill, which received construction waste such as drywall, wood and steel, which does not create methane. But, a portion of the zoo is on household waste that generates methane. We will have an active mitigation system under the building just in case.”

The new centre should host up to 500,000 visitors a year. It will also contribute to the Rivers project in central Calgary, which is highlighting the reclamation and greening of previously unusable sites.

Iratuvias. i currently reside in calgary and trust me .... Calgary is building more roads then any other city in Canada does.. Alberta has invested hundreds of million of dollars to build new roads all through the cities. Calgary is currently building an additional 10 km train line through the city to accommodate the needs of transport..

Curious. Around February there was a floury of stories regarding the an RFP being issues for a new much larger Calgary Convention Centre. I'm wondering if anyone has any updates on that? Who is doing the work and is there a process by which organizations who may use such a facility can participate in a consultation process?

Calgary is Oil.
It is THE oil and gas centre for Canada. Almost every oil, gas and energy company in Canada has their head office in Calgary.

the plus 15 system is a godsend. it has no drawbacks and any city that has 40 million sq feet of office space combined with winter days that can reach -44 should hope and aspire to build such a system as well. it is without doubt one of the best things about Calgarys CBD. and i am sure that it is one of the things that any large corp that is concidering building a large head office tower looks at with a happy tear in thier eye's. thank god calgary has had the foresite to build and continue to build apon such a exelent system. it takes nothing from the calgary streetlife. that is a big myth. it does, however, make hundreds of thousands of CBD workers very lucky that thier bosses decided to build a tower in Calgary's downtown. each and every day somone will say, "thank god for this +15 system" and i doubt that anyone can say it has effected calgary's streetlife in a negitve way. show me the proof. its a bunch of malarky. when its -30 you walk outside. i will use the +15. i will be warm and smiley, at the same time you will have green and yellow snottcycles to greet the pretty receptionist when you get to the 50th floor of the building you work at.

I'm not a huge fan of the +15s but I don't believe they have that big an effect on the downtown street life. when the weather is nice everybody goes outside. I agree though, if the +15 system wasn't there, Calgary streets would be more like Manhattan during the day.

Calgary needs to make it's downtown core more pedestrian friendly. Calgary's downtown goes silent at night and everyone just drives around during the day.

When people talk about downtown Calgary being silent after hours, they are talking about the CBD or Financial district...and yes it's quiet, just like the CBDs in other cities. After all, it is a collection of office buildings, and there isn't any reason for it to be busy there. If people are looking for action there, it's usually a case of not being familiar with Calgary.

I would liken Calgary's downtown to a junior version (albeit, very junior version) of San Francisco's, Midtown Manhattan, or DT area near Wall Street in NYC. Much of Midtown Manhattan, Wall street area or the Financial district of SanFran is quiet after hours, but it's the nearby neighborhoods that those cities are known for....the districts like Fillmore, or SOMA in SF, or in NYC, Greenwich Village, Soho, etc..

In Calgary you would go to the Beltline, Kensington or Mission after hours

whitefordj

Nobody lives downtown. The only people that are there are the folks who work there. No matter what the streets will be dead after they are gone home. The plus 15 has absolutely nothing to do with it. Until more condo units are built there will be no one to fill those streets. Any idea that taking out the plus 15 will improve the street life is just imaginary, and ignorant of the reality.

New central library may not break ground next year

By Jamie Komarnicki, Calgary Herald December 4, 2011 11:16 PM

CALGARY — The city's much anticipated new central library project isn’t likely to break ground in 2012, the facility’s centennial year.

The city is still hashing out some of the conceptual planning for the new facility, whose price tag is pegged at up to $250 million.

Anything other than a symbolic groundbreaking in 2012 would be “optimistic,” said Ald. Druh Farrell, who sits on the Calgary Public Library board.

“It would be wonderful if we could break ground in the centennial year, but we don’t want to rush it,” Farrell said.

“It’s important we have aggressive, but realistic timelines.”

A more likely scenario would see the request for proposals process further along by the end of next year.

The city has pitched the idea of a “cultural campus,” connected to the new central library, which will be located on a 3rd Street S.E. block across from City Hall, in the East Village.

That plan adds another $100 million to the final price tag.

“It’s still early on in the process. We’ve got a lot of work to do,” Farrell said.

“Before we even put out an RFP (request for proposal), we need to define clearly what a 21st century library should look like, and one that can function well into the future.”

The municipality has pledged $175 million for the library.

The second phase of the massive Eighth Avenue Place downtown office development is moving forward.

The owners of the project, which currently has a 49-storey tower, say construction on a 40-storey second tower will begin in January with initial occupancy planned for the spring of 2014.

“We’re delighted to make this announcement and to be moving forward with construction of this second tower to complete Eighth Avenue Place, cementing its place in the Calgary skyline,” said Loy Sullivan, director of leasing of 20 Vic Management Inc., which is representing the co-owners.

The co-owners are Alberta Investment Management Corp. (AIMCo), Ivanhoe Cambridge and Matco Investments Ltd.

The development is located between 8th and 9th Avenues and 4th and 5th Streets S.W. The 49-storey tower, of 1.1 million square feet of office space, was completed in early 2011. It was the first highrise office building in Canada and third in North America to be awarded a LEED Platinum pre-certification.

The second tower, which is already 27 per cent pre-leased, will be 850,000 square feet.

“There’s a number of developers that have been basically waiting for a tenant to sign a deal to go ahead,” said Susan Thompson, business development manager of real estate for Calgary Economic Development. “All the market indicators are there for new construction. Because of the concern around the world economy, nobody’s been ready to go until they’ve got ink on paper saying they’ve got tenants committing to the building. So someone has stepped up and said ‘yes we are going to commit’ and now they’re going to go ahead and develop.”

Whether this kicks off another cycle of downtown office development remains up in the air, added Thompson.

“We could see more development. It’s all going to depend on how many tenants step up and say they want to grow,” she said. “Nobody’s going to go ahead with mass speculative development for downtown office space at this point in time.”

Hines is the development manager for the EAP project with Pickard Chilton the design architects. EllisDon will build the skyscraper.

Leo de Bever, chief executive of AIMCo, said the corporation is quite happy with the announcement that the second tower is moving forward.

“The first tower was a great success in terms of being able to fill it against all odds,” he said of the first phase of development which proceeded on a speculative basis with no pre-leasing in place. “We think this is a very high quality product. We’re obviously very happy we’ve got this one on the go.”

Randy Fennessey, president of Colliers International in Calgary and part of the project’s leasing team, said the first tower is now effectively 100 per cent leased and the second tower has 230,000 square feet pre-leased or about 27 per cent of the building.

“We’ve got a number of other tenancies in various stages of negotiation. Given current demand, we anticipate that the remaining space in the building will lease up in short order,” he said, adding that growth in the energy sector is fuelling demand for downtown Calgary office space.

That demand has led to record absorption — the change in occupied space — of 2.2 million square feet year-to-date until the end of the third quarter. According to Colliers, the downtown office vacancy rate at the end of the third quarter was 6.16 per cent, down from 7.79 per cent in the second quarter. Vacancy peaked at 15.22 per cent at the end of June 2010.

The continued demand for office space is spurring interest from other developers as well.

Recently, Oxford Properties announced it is in the pre-leasing stages for a 25-storey, 615,000-square-foot office tower in the Eau Claire area.

The new tower would be built on half a block of land between 2nd Avenue and 3rd Avenue S.W. along 4th Street.

Calgary’s new south hospital a bit late, but on budget

By Kelly Cryderman, Calgary Herald January 24, 2012 10:54 PM

CALGARY — The $1.31-billion south Calgary hospital will open its doors for the first time between June and late summer, depending on what health official you talk to.

It might be a smidgen later than the timeline laid out last year, when Alberta Health Services officials told Calgarians the city’s “south health campus” would be opened in phases beginning this spring.

But Alberta’s Health Minister Fred Horne maintains it’s still on schedule.

“I think all of us wanted it to be open as quickly as possible,” Horne told reporters on Tuesday. “This is a really important project to this city. The additional acute care beds and the emergency department, in particular, are really important in the south of Calgary.”

The minister said the hospital will be on budget and fully operational by April 2013.

Premier Alison Redford and other cabinet ministers toured the new building — featuring a climbing wall, rooms with built-in daybeds for visiting family and sun-drenched lounges — as part of this week’s cabinet tour of the province.
