View Full Version : Guide about the Geography of Greece
GrigorisSokratis February 9th, 2006, 02:52 AM Hi fellow forumers, for a long time there have been hundreeds if not more than a thousand pictures uploaded showing the beauties of Greece as well as there have been hundreds of visitors astonished by these breathtaking landscapes our coutry has to offer.
Many didn't even know Greece has so many things to offer other than beaches, history and Plaka :) . So they discovered a new world in the so far hidden places of Greece.
But everything has an explanation and the beauties and landscapes variety of Greece have it too, the answer is plain, geography. A privileged geography indeed.
That's why from long ago I wanted to make a complete geographic guide of Greece and thus by this guide give some answers to the questions of many of the forumers who visit the Hellenic community of skyscraperscity and don't believe their eyes for so much beauty.
Hereby you can download a pdf file of 89 pages I prepared in the last days, with compiled up to date info from many renowned websites, encyclopedias including Britannica, official statistics sites (like Eurostat), geological studies, government sites, etc. The guide is also full of pictures showing different places of the Greek land.
I hope you enjoy it:

VERY VERY NICE Artmisa, well done :okay:
Some remarks:
The word "Τουρισμοσ" is written "Τουρισμός"
Now i see this word "Γεγονοί" and after the word "Datos"
To tell you the truth i have never seen this before ( "Γεγονοί" )
Did you wanted to write "Data" in Hellenic?
If yes the word "Data" is translated as "Δεδομένα" or "Στοιχεία" for example ( Historical Data - Ιστορικά Στοιχεία )
Again very nice job :)

Bravo!

Thanks a lot for your help!
GrigorisSokratis February 10th, 2006, 05:49 PM Thank you guys and much more is still to come since I'm working in another huge project for the Hellenic Forum, a 3D movie showing virtually the city of Athens now I'm trying to make it interactive but is quite a heavy task since I have to make a new whole engine for it in a GTA style, don't know if I'll make it, but as a movie it will be surely done. When I'll have some time I'll post pics of it.
arTmisa February 10th, 2006, 08:48 PM ^^wow! I'll be waiting for that :colgate:

GrigorisSokratis February 13th, 2006, 05:55 AM Great thanks Arpels. And for those visitors who don't have much info about the Greek geography in the first picture you can see great part of the western half of the country while in the second you can see the whole nation.
Thank you again Arpels nice and interesting images.
Arpels February 13th, 2006, 01:49 PM wellcome!!
Giorgio February 22nd, 2006, 10:37 AM Nice but where in the world did you get the stats concerning Area of Greece from? They seem very Inaccurate. Do you have a source?
GrigorisSokratis February 22nd, 2006, 04:43 PM Actually they're pretty accurate. It's because in many ones including the CIA fact book the rock outcrops and the inner aegean basin are neglected and not counted at all!! as well as some other inner water areas. While in other texts they do. I have that info from text books I have as well from studies done by the ITU Faculty of Civil Engineering, Department of Geodesy and Photogrammetry.
Also Turkey counts that Aegean basin area belonging to its territory adding some 19,600 sq kms to its territory. Many, if not all countries do so, including Canada adding some 1,000,000 sq kms to its territory.
For some strange reason in many places the data for Greece has been changed showing 132,000 where many parts of the country are not added including islets, rock outcrops and the inner aegean basin part. Did you know that in the 132,000 result I don't know for which reason (in some books about the issue they say it's for simplicity reasons). only 400 islands have been counted! out of the 3000 or 6000 if we count the rocks. Also neglecting those parts the coastline have been reduced from around 16,000 to 15,000 and in some cases when more islets are neglected they give greece 13,100 kms of coastline (maybe someday they will just quit counting all the islands).
One point to have on mind for example the country with the largest number of islands and coastline of Europe, Norway, counts each one of its outcrops, islets and inner water areas (not counting lakes and rivers) or Fyords.
So all the data I collected from different places including Eurostat, Universities (from Greece, other European countries as well as from Turkey), Textbooks, etc are pretty accurate. And all coincided that's why all the data I added is from unbiased accurate sources (including translated turkish ones)

Giorgio February 23rd, 2006, 06:24 AM Thanks. I think you should put the Bibliography into the PDF.
GrigorisSokratis February 23rd, 2006, 07:58 PM You are right, maybe in some weeks since I'm almost full time busy with work and there are also other projects I have momentarily stopped like the virtual Athens project also there's still the promise of me posting old pictures of Athens that I have plenty of (unfortunately I gave away some time ago the scanner so I have to ask for a favor to some friend).
Giorgio February 24th, 2006, 06:57 AM Never Give away your things Grigoris!
I look forward to seeing the images soon.
GrigorisSokratis February 26th, 2006, 05:48 AM Ha ha now I have to buy a brand new for myself, again. But priority in the list has the Digital Machine, since I want to take some pictures also of Athens and help a little in that labor of collecting stills of our city as well of our country and posting them here. So the scanner can wait, I'll scan them in some friend's house.
Giorgio February 26th, 2006, 05:50 AM Or just buy a camera and take a picture of them! :D
