Küsel February 10th, 2006, 03:36 PM Swissgerman - Mother Tongue
German - since age of 5 fluently
French - since age of 12 (10 years in school, but forgot most of it in the meantime, although I still understand)
English - since age of 14, fluently
Portuguese - never learned properly but I understand and speak a little (maybe more than French  ) for I was living in Sao Paulo for one year and married to a Brazilian.
Latin - many years in school, don't speak but it helps to understand a bit of the writings in Italian, Rumantsch and Spanish, that I never learned and was a big help for Portuguese.
I also tried to learn once Russian, Finnish and Bahasa Indonesia - but forget it! At least I still remember some words in Finnish, but the declination is just too difficult
chiccoplease February 10th, 2006, 04:04 PM Here we go again. Kuesel and his Icelandic skills.

Küsel February 10th, 2006, 04:10 PM Forget it! I learned a lot - but apart from German and English and a bit of portuguese I don't have ANY big experiences (and if only bad ones  ) in other languages ;)
It's not Icelandic - it's Rumantsch: these people HAVE to learn also Swissgerman, German, and Italian or French - and if they study also English. Apart from that Rumantsch has a lot of different dialects, they all are perfect in ANY language
DvW February 10th, 2006, 04:21 PM I've read all posts, and nobody can speak dutch fluently. But there are some germans that can read it.

Swissgerman is not even that bad - with a bit of fanatsy you can read and understand Swedish and Norwegian a bit as well: read it loud letter by letter and it would sound like Swissgerman - but clear totally different pronounced or the other way: spelled

I've been told by Danes, Norwegians and Swedes I've met here in Atlanta, that if you if you speak any of these Scandinavian languages that you can understand them all.
Also, Finland may be located in Scandinavia, but the language is definitely not Scandinavian/Germanic. It's close to the Baltic languages and Hungarian (or Magyar Paya??)
Nick in Atlanta February 11th, 2006, 09:30 PM I discovered recently that I also understand Afrikaans, I think i´ll learn to speak it before summer.
My paternal grandparents and my late father spoke fluent Afrikaans and English, although they spoke English at home. They were all born and raised in Apartheid South Africa where whites had to learn to speak both languages. However, I remember asking all of them if they understood Dutch, because Afrikaans is basically derived from Dutch, but they all said no. I don't know if they could understand written Dutch or not, but spoken Dutch was not very understandable. I think it's due to the German and French influence on the development of Afrikaans.

Dr. Dubai February 12th, 2006, 03:18 PM Everybody speaks English here. NYC was from the Dutch at first (they build the city in 1625,as you can see on NYC stamps), it was called New Amsterdam. Than the Eglish came, they conquered the Dutch in 1664. In 1673 the Dutch defeated the English, New York's name changed to New Orange. But in 1674 the English did strike back and the city became NYC again. If the city would've been stayed Dutch ownership, Dutch would be the most important language in the world:D..

not forcibly... had it remained Dutch, History would be different. The 13 initial colonies might have never existed and fighted for independence. The US wouldn't exist then, in this alternative reality . So it's difficult to say whether Dutch could have ebcome the most important language in the World. In fact, I don't thikn it was ever an issue to the Dutch, since none of Hollands former colonies has a big number of Dutch Speakers.
Dr. Dubai February 12th, 2006, 05:03 PM @ Petronius
In parts of Indonesia (especially Maluku), Suriname, South Africa, the Dutch Antilles and Belgium ( not a former colony:tongue3: ) they still speak Dutch. Although they've a strong accent, it's oftently understandable.

semi-fluent: Spanish. I often have conversations with some friends from mexico and other hispanics at my local gym. A few of them don't know any English so if I can carry on a conversation with them it seems as if I do o.k.
Intermediate: German and Russian. I have friends from both Germany and Russia. I know quite a bit of vocab and verb conjugation/adjective placement, etc. I can read cyrillic.
Beginner: French, I know many frases, but reading and listening is still horrible.
I would love to learn every major language, but, of course, this would be extremely difficult, and one simply does not have the time to do so. I would like to learn and become fluent in German, and I really enjoy the sound of Russian so maybe that also. Maybe Mandarin later in life with its increasing importance.

grachtengordeldier March 13th, 2006, 02:08 PM Afrikaans is very close to Dutch. 95% Of the words are the same as in Dutch. Some words have changed a bit though. In general you could say that Afrikaans is easier than Dutch, especially the grammar. Biggest problem in understanding each other is Afrikaners pronounce their words different than Dutch.
In Namibia is seems most people speak Afrikaans, or at least, it is lingua franca, most people understand it.

Mandarin, Hokkian, and Cantonese are all dialects of one SINGLE language, Chinese, so sorry, you only speak English, Chinese, Indonesian, Malay, and Dutch. I don't go about naming American, British, Canadian, and Australian as languages, so why are you naming these regional dialects?

cantonese and hokkian is no longer considered as a dialect by itself coz it is a language in hongkong and taiwan, respectively. it has its own writing character which is not the same as mandarin. Just like european country where every country has their own language, asian countries also have.
You're gonna classified Malay and Indonesian are the same aren't you? well, in fact Tagalog and Indonesian is also similar (just change some vocal). Dutch and German is different but still about the same.
