There is a proposal to transform Salem AlMubarak Street into a pedestrian street. The project will change the routes of traffic and car parks will be built too. A Meeting will be held to discuss the project with the owners of real estate in Salem Al Mubarak St.
Foxtrot February 11th, 2006, 03:25 PM That is indded a good decision.. Traffic is too much on this street on week days
Skoulikimou February 11th, 2006, 03:34 PM that should have been done long time ago , any way late better than never ;)
i need to know the start date of the project !!
AlOnSi February 11th, 2006, 04:32 PM Inshallah they approve it

Koweitien May 7th, 2006, 03:19 AM The meeting with the owners of property on Salem Al Mubarek St. will be held within the next two weeks :)
The meeting was held today and they decided to form a committee of five owners so that they can put ideas forward to the designers.
The street is 5 km long and is seperated at some parts, so transforming the street has to be thought over thoroughly.
Many ideas were discussed some of which were to convert the street completely into a pedestrian street, to form a kind of tram to connect the the entire street, to construct underground parking and to construct a kind of cable car (telefrique) to connect the street together.
So I guess this render is for the cable car.

margog May 7th, 2006, 03:26 AM I think tram is better than cable car.
Koweitien May 7th, 2006, 03:33 AM I think tram is better than cable car.
Yeah me too. I also think that making a central square is also a good idea :)
Ikarus_q8 May 7th, 2006, 03:43 PM any news !!!

The Legend June 13th, 2006, 12:31 AM This was posted earlier talking about the fate of this project :)
This project was supposed to be done about 40 years ago.
If there are all these conglomerites involved - there is about 0.000000000000000000001 % chance it will ever happen - despite what any paper or report may say.

Do you know why this project was stopped 40 years ago ? It was stopped because the property owners of that street did not agree on the design of the development at that time.
This time the Hawalli governote's municipalty has worked extra hard with the owners so that all their ideas could be chanelled across to the designers, so that a final design could be produced which would please all of those who are involved in this project.

Let's hope this is true. I think it would be good for the area.
But how will this affect the traffic on Gulf Road? Goodness knows it's a already a nitemare on a weekend - so what about when they take away another channel or through road?
smussuw June 13th, 2006, 11:35 AM Here they do it without even asking
Sanchero June 13th, 2006, 07:23 PM Finally!!! The should so change it into a walking street. A tram should be used. Alot of trees for shade ofcourse and PLEASE no conacarpus (or however you spell it) it's ugly! و الحين ابي اعرف المواقف وين؟ كأن ماكو اراضي فاضية خلف المجمعات؟
CrazY June 13th, 2006, 07:38 PM the land behind laila gallery is good for a huge multi storey parking lot :)
Mu9ai3ibun June 13th, 2006, 11:11 PM I'm sure that the government, muncipility, engineers, and all project owners know of somthing called multi-storey parking lot, but the problem is that it's EXPENSIVE. VERY EXPENSIVE.
Anyway, I've never heard of turning Salem Al-Mubarak Street into a pedestrian street, and it's a great idea. Hope it happens soon.
RCSI June 16th, 2006, 02:55 AM Dubliner, what's the point of transforming it into a pedestrian street ?
like kuwaties are really interested in walking. :sleepy:

Perhaps they would be more interested if it was available? The slew of Kuwaiti's who enjoy walking around Edgeware Road / Oxford Street and Downtown Beirut each summer is there for everyone to see.
Beirut downtown in the middle of Salmiya....sounds like a good plan to me.....except of course in the summer.
immortal June 16th, 2006, 12:35 PM RCSI has a point, no offence, but most kuwaities are well known for their laziness, and they tend to go everywhere and anywhere by car, they never think of using their feet.
someone remind me again, What is the prevalence of obesity in kuwait ?

Last I heard, in some official survey....We Kuwaiti's were apparently the most obese nation on the planet!!! No joke
Hip Hip Hooooraaahhhh

Hip Hip Hooooraaahhhh
I came across a similar survey which ranked Kuwait as the second most obese nation in the world but that was dated in 1994. Recent surveys show that Kuwait is now further down on that scale as countries like the US have surpassed us.
Kuwaitis have become so obese due to them adopting the western lifestyle (I think calling it the American lifestyle would have been better ;)). I mean if you see any of the pics of Kuwait in the seventies and see any of the Kuwaiti women back then, you would see how almost all the women were skinny. I mean back in that time a weight of 50 Kg for a woman was considered overweight !
I agree with Legend on the fact that Kuwaitis love to walk so I think that this project is a good step to helping obese people lose that extra weight.
Bu Yusef June 24th, 2006, 10:13 PM 30,000 KD prize set for winning design of Salmiya project
KUWAIT, June 24 (KUNA)
The Salem al Mubarak Development Project Team is reviewing detailed studies aimed at transfering the Salmiya area into an attractive touristic and commercial zone.
Municipal Council member Sheikha Fatima al Sabah, who heads the team, said following a meeting that the studies would take into consideration the area's commercial and touristic nature.
She said the project would be divided into four sectors stretching on a five-square-kilometer area. Stretching along the Arab Gulf street, the project would cover main streets of the Salmiya area, where the country's most attractive malls and commercial complexes, hotels and restaurants are located.
A Kuwaiti Dinar 30,000 (some USD 100,000 dollars) prize was set for the winning design, she said, calling on architecture offices to submit their projects by the first of next October.
ahmedjam June 25th, 2006, 06:24 PM well thanks Bu Yusef for the gooooood news and i think with Fatima Al Sabah this project will be real in the very near future ! :)
baqala-dweller June 26th, 2006, 11:45 AM Is the architecture competition open to individuals as well as offices?
There is something I wonder about, however: why is there no established community involvement in the urban development process in Kuwait? Designers of such large-scale (re)developments should consider several issues that would add to their sustainability, including:
1. Opinions of the urban dwellers, or the every day users, of the area for clues.
2. Opinions of the owners in the neighbourhoods.
3. Conformity to a master plan, if available.
4. Possible rehabilitation and re-coding of the municipal programming for the area.
5. Environmental aspects.
I've always believed that a grass-roots approach is far more successful in the long run, allowing a project to grow from the people, rather than restricing the methods and modes of everyday life into very strictly defined aesthetic design solutions that appeased only the decision makers and financial controllers.
Foxtrot June 26th, 2006, 12:48 PM There is a consortium of some of the major local architect firms here to come up with the design. But as usual Municipality is delaying the project !!

Sanchero July 7th, 2006, 05:44 PM I hope when they make it a walking street they connect all shopping malls at basement level to avoid the heat/rain/dust as they have done in Montreal and Singapore to avoid the snow and rain. Also hope they keep in mind the future metro station requirements and location before the conversion takes place.

Very good suggestions- BUT keep in mind we're in Kuwait. The metro station is still in paper, and if we were to wait for a solid plan we would wait for a couple of years. Something to keep in your mind!
