Preliminary designs for Dubai Central Library

According to Essa Al Maidour, Assistant Director General of Dubai Municipality for General Projects Affairs, the new book-shaped building, to be constructed on the banks of the picturesque Al Mamzar Lagoons, will include extended facilities. The central library is currently located in Al Ras area.

"We have chosen this beautiful location for the library given the significance of library in enlightening the community members. Moreover, a less-congested area means a lot of interest among the public. People can come to the library and enjoy reading in a relaxed environment, while enjoying the scenic location," he said.

As for designs of the new premises, he said the preliminary designs have been selected through a contest among internationally-renowned and experienced consultants. These designs show a book-shaped building that reflects the library's main theme.

"The main activities of the library would concentrate on the middle part of the building where natural lighting from all part would light up the entire area. The basement would be dedicated for parking which will accommodate as many as 1000 cars. Other facilities of the central library will include administrative and technical sections, reading halls, service areas, children's library, business library, exhibitions and conference centre, and training halls," he said.

He added that the central library would consist of over 1.72 million books and other library materials including CDs and audio-video cassettes.

Al Maidour noted that the building would be constructed according to high international standards and specifications with much focus on electronic services as well as state-of-the-art audio-visual facilities.

The final designs are expected to be ready by the end of the third quarter of this year, which will be followed by floating a tender for contractors to bid for undertaking the project's construction. Works of the project are expected to be over by the end of next year.

Nope, never been.

My parents almost bought a holliday home there. It was about February last year my parents were looking at Dubai. My mum loves the beach so we considered something on the palm or an appartment near the beach. My Dad doesn't though so we eventually bought in Montreux in Switzerland. I don't know the price but my parents said it was quite an expensive appartment but has a stunning view of the lake near Geneva. In fact we have quite a lot of friends in Switzerland so that's probably a good reason aswell why they bought there.

I'm a student now though so am too poor to afford a trip to Dubai at the moment but it's definitely on my list. ;)
As soon as the burj dubai's finished and I have scraped enough cash I'll go.
Waiting for the day when Ryannair starts flights to Dubai for 20 euros per person :D

Dubai Municipality opens the ‘book’ on new library contract

The new library will be shaped like and open book and will consist of nearly two million books, reading halls, and an exhibition centre.

Dubai Municipality will invite bids for the construction of a new ‘book-shaped’ central library by the third quarter of
this year.

It is currently finalising designs for the library, which will be located on the banks of Al Mamzar Lagoons. Work on the project is expected to be completed by the end of 2007.

According to Essa Al Maidour, assistant director general
of Dubai Municipality for general projects affairs, the
new building will include extended facilities.

He also said that the building will be constructed according
to high international standards and specifications, with a
focus on electronic and audiovisual facilities.

It's the worst building in Birmingham I think. It doesnt look much different when clean. If we built the one at the top, it would be the 10th largest in the world but they didn't want to build an architecturally magnificent building near one of the most popular areasin the city centre... Anyway, back to Dubai :)

New public library to open in Al Twar
Staff Report

Dubai: A new public library is set to open in Al Twar by the end of October, said a Dubai civic body official.

The Dh10 million library complex will have a wide range of books, including audio and video facilities, in addition to a dedicated section for children. It will be the seventh public library in Dubai.

The official said that Dubai Municipality had already completed construction of the two-storey library in July this year.

The premises include a main library of 12,000 books with a capacity for 150 readers and a children's library of 9,000 books with a capacity for 100 readers.

There will be two multi-purpose halls with a capacity of 150 persons each, in addition to a cafeteria, administration block and prayer rooms.

The municipality has also started construction work on another public library in Al Mankhool and is finalising designs for a new premises for the Dubai Central Library in Al Mamzar.

The Dh10 million library at Al Mankhool will serve residents in Karama, Satwa, Al Dhiyafa, Al Jafiliya and the nearby areas.

The construction work for the library is expected to be completed by April 2007.

The Central Library in Al Mamzar will come as a boon to book-lovers in the city and give a major boost to the cultural scene of the emirate.

The new book-shaped building will be constructed near Al Mamzar Lagoon.

Dubai needs more libraries. There are hardly any in the city. look at Qatar. They are spending spending so much money on libraries and art museums. Dubai should do the same.
