Thanks. Well, Western Ukraine in general is more patriotic, and therefore so is Lviv. I don't think it's as much against Russians, as the Russian language. They really don't like it when somebody speaks Russian in their city, just because of the whole language issue.

Well then they automatic don't like Russians. If I for example will come in Lviv like tourist and I will talking with my fellows in Russian, so it could be quite dangerous. Don't you think?

It's not dangerous. It's almost like the situation in Montreal. I can speak French well enough, but if someone doesn't speak French, and asks something in English in Montreal, they'll get dirty looks. But nothing more. It's not like they hate English speakers as people, rather they think people are disrespecting their language.

Ha, so unfriendly atmosphere is there then, local residents behaving like the villagers who see a stranger in their small settlement.

I explained it the best I can. My parents lived there most of their lives, and spoke Russian, and never had a problem. Of course there are nationalistic, blind people who will give you these dirty looks, but most of the locals are intelligent and polite.

I agree.

Enayze, were you in Russia once?
You will in safe in most cases and you don't get the "dirty looks" when you're talking in native language, including Ukrainian.

I'm sure the Polish tourists speak Polish in Lviv, and I am also sure there are some Polish churches too. :)

Of course! Actually, there are still quite a lot of Poles living in the city.
And as Andriy said, most tourists in Lviv are Polish, so it's heard everywhere. :)

By the way, guys, if things got crazy in Lviv when Karpaty played Shakhtar, from Donec'k, imagine how things would get if Karpaty play Zenit, from St Petersburg (there sponsor is Gazprom).... :runaway: .....

I'm willing to bet, most tourists are Polish. There are always huge tour groups of them around the city.

Could someone explain me, why on earth, the Lviv football team is called "Karpaty"? That's ridiculous. I can't imagine a team from Kraków being called "Tatry" and I guess it's more less the same distance to the mountains ;)

Karpaty cos of the Carpathians, obviously..But I dont know..You could ask why any team has its name..Its been the name since 1963 and their is too much history behind it to change it :).

I love when non-Eastern Europeans discover Lviv and our other beautiful cities. I think I'll be posting my Lviv posts in other parts of SSC than EE and UU, to spread the love so to say. :colgate:
