View Full Version : A question from the northern part of the Continent?
empersouf February 13th, 2006, 08:49 PM Hey you RSA guys,
How are you all doing.
I have a question, and it's..Why dont you guys speak afrikaans on this subforum? A lot of people in RSA speak Afrikaans right.
Cause Afrikaans is very similar to Dutch, that way it's very easy to understand you if you speak afrikaans:D
Btw, I'm not really from the northern part of the continent, I live in the netherlands, my grandfathers went to holland to work...so that's why I live there;)
However, have a nice day and enjoy summer, it's summer here :sleepy:
joburg February 13th, 2006, 09:24 PM We don't speak Afrikaans because most of us aren't Afrikaans, but speak English at home. :)
In anycase, the main lingua franca in SA is English, and so it follows that the main lingua franca in the SA forum is english. :D
dysan1 February 13th, 2006, 10:04 PM also, the amount of afrikaans spoken varies across the country. In Durban where only 1,5% of the population speak afrikaans as their mother tongue u rarely hear it and most of us cant speak it at all.
whereas Cape Town and Pretoria have high concentrations of Afrikaans.
And as Joburg says, most South African's, whether there home language is Afrikaans, Zulu, xhosa or any of the african languages, they can almost all speak English
Durbsboi February 14th, 2006, 10:33 AM Helo my Forum_naam is Durbsboi, that about it for me in Afrikaans. Thank God most people dont speak afrikaans in Durban, but any way welcome Soufian, aint that a muslim name?> I got a friend named Soufian.
You will find afrikaans speaking ppl all over SA, but not in Durbs, very few, but if u go down south towards Margate & Shepstone, u will pick up some Afrikaans speaking ppl.
hsark February 14th, 2006, 03:50 PM je ne compris pas! je ne parle pas afrikaans "wasn't the french who set up the wine route" too many langs in rsa easer to stick to english :)
dysan1 February 14th, 2006, 06:07 PM i feel like i'm visting a foreign place.... YES Durbsboi...thank god we live in durban!
empersouf February 14th, 2006, 06:54 PM Soufian is a muslim name, im moroccan;)
And I enjoy reading you're comments. Afrikaans just should be the lingua franca on the SA Subforum:tongue2:
Muckingfutz February 14th, 2006, 07:30 PM You must be smoking too much of that Dutch weed. Long live English!
joburg February 15th, 2006, 12:01 AM Tu es un muy feo grande travestido.
:cucumber:
Muckingfutz February 15th, 2006, 12:48 AM Gracias, Puto :)
Harkeb February 15th, 2006, 01:57 AM Bitte, was sagst du doch? Spanisch ist nicht eine der offiziellen Sprachen Suedafrikas! Ausserdem ist Deutsch am grossten Fremdsprache in Suedafrika...
conquest February 15th, 2006, 02:23 AM Tu es un muy feo grande travestido.
:cucumber:
you say travesti not travestido!!!!
Durbsboi February 15th, 2006, 10:31 AM So hows things in Holland? been to the "district" lately?
empersouf February 15th, 2006, 05:28 PM The red light district isn't that special...Never been there, it's more for tourists.
Here are some pics of my town:
http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=247579&page=1&pp=20
Btw, I understand everything you say...also spanish an german;)
Never knew that german was the biggest foreign language after the official languages;)
And I'm not transsexual.
Furthermore: Afrikaans is het beste dat er is.
joburg February 15th, 2006, 10:29 PM Oh no I'm not saying anyone is a transvestite, I was just saying the only thing I know in Spanish. And quite clearly I even got THAT wrong. :)
Didn't intend anyone to take offence. Not that being a big ugly transvestite is insulting, of course. :)
empersouf February 16th, 2006, 03:57 PM ^^
Ofcourse not! It takes a long time to offend me.
Btw, a friend of me is going to Capetown in summer...it's Dr. Dubai the one who made the tread(the link I gave you a few posts earlier), go see that thread and leave a comment;)
Durbsboi February 16th, 2006, 03:59 PM Oh know! the district is'nt that special! I was going to go for a pilgrimage there!:jk:
empersouf February 16th, 2006, 04:14 PM Really, whats youre religion than? Prostitant?
Durbsboi February 16th, 2006, 04:34 PM yeh how did u know!
we hail from Prostivellia! its on a small Island called uwannalickydiki
Yo man i was chekin pics of ur village, looks pretty cool, we dont hav places like that here in SA, we only see that on TV, I know u never post those pics, but wats up with the dudes & the guns?
empersouf February 16th, 2006, 05:00 PM whhahahaa, everyone asks that. We were shooting a film for school; It's called stay loyal, a very cool film. I shot somebody in the movie;)
mike2005 February 16th, 2006, 06:59 PM Very few people as a percentage of the population actually speak afrikaans. I cant speak a word and I live here without a problem and infact hardly ever hear it spoken at all. In Cape Town it is more widely spoken but even there one dosnt need to speak it at all and it is still very much a secondary language next to english.
empersouf February 16th, 2006, 08:12 PM ^^
Too bad:(
Cause Afrikaans is a really cool language.
Durbsboi February 17th, 2006, 11:06 AM ^^^ no Afrikaans is not a very cool language esp if u hail from Durban & ur friends & family send u jokes in afrikaans & u dont know wat the fu*k it means!
dysan1 February 17th, 2006, 11:23 AM hehe!!! so true! and u always know its holiday time...cos thats when u hear afrikaans
empersouf February 20th, 2006, 10:34 PM ^^
Probably because most of the tourists are Afrikaans speaking tourists...
HirakataShi February 21st, 2006, 07:21 AM Not a fan of the Germanic-family languages.
Try Zulu, Xhosa, Northern Sotho, SeSotho, Tswana, Tsonga, Swazi, Venda, or Ndebele.
mike2005 February 21st, 2006, 12:06 PM Its a horrible language! It sounds like people are either angry/or dying when they are talking.
empersouf February 21st, 2006, 02:23 PM What language? Afrikaans!!!
dysan1 February 21st, 2006, 08:30 PM ^^
Probably because most of the tourists are Afrikaans speaking tourists...
umm...ja....hehe, they come down by the hundreds of thousands from all over gauteng, limpopo, free state, mpumalanga, north west...hulle kom vir die see
empersouf February 21st, 2006, 10:51 PM WHAHAHAHHAAAAAHAHAHHA.
Neither Dutch nor Afrikaans sounds like someone dying:tongue2:
But on the other hand it's not your native language so I cant imagine how you hear it;)
Muckingfutz February 22nd, 2006, 05:12 AM Afrikaans is the language of Satan.
Durbsboi February 22nd, 2006, 12:01 PM Afrikaans is the language of Satan.
well said, but I think Austrian is more satanic! ever heard those guys speak fast paced!
mike2005 February 22nd, 2006, 03:36 PM Jeez Soufian why are you so obsessed with one of the worlds most ugly and pointless languages? I never said anything about Dutch being ugly but Dutch does not sound very much like afrikaans. Afrikaans is much harsher and actually a very irritating and grating language whereas dutch actually sounds quite nice!
Pieter_Van_Classen February 22nd, 2006, 03:58 PM Austrian is not a language.
Durbsboi February 23rd, 2006, 10:55 AM ^^ well wat eva language the austrian's speak!
empersouf February 23rd, 2006, 11:58 AM Austrians speak german;)
And I do think Afrikaans looks like dutch!
hsark February 23rd, 2006, 12:26 PM haha so what austrians ....
mike2005 February 23rd, 2006, 01:25 PM Afrikaans looks like dutch but does not sound very much like it.
Durbsboi February 24th, 2006, 11:34 AM if only the afrikaaners could have the same knowlege as the Dutch, be more liberal smoke abit of weed, open up brothels so people canplay with their boerer meissies!
empersouf February 24th, 2006, 12:47 PM ^^
Thank you for admiring me so much
empersouf March 4th, 2006, 12:54 PM Another question from the noth, in fact two.
What's the name of this town, it's in RSA:
http://img96.imageshack.us/img96/5608/3250cq.jpg
And does it ever snow in the RSA?
dysan1 March 4th, 2006, 02:08 PM yeh it snows in SA. We have 2 ski resorts, both on the Drakensberg Mountain range. There is Tiffendale, in the eastern cape, which is the most established. And a new one that was built near underberg in Kwazulu natal. the underberg one is developing a 100 room hotel at present to complement the existing cabins. a second slope is to open this year and new chairlifts are arriving soon i'm told.
Durbsboi March 6th, 2006, 09:38 AM ^^
Thank you for admiring me so much
No problem man, I admire the open type ppl!
empersouf March 6th, 2006, 12:33 PM ^^
The world should be a clone of you, everything would be perfect then;)
So it does snow in RSA, even ski resorts....wunderbar.
Durbsboi March 7th, 2006, 09:17 AM ^^ So Soufian, are u in school or studying nething?
♣628.finst March 9th, 2006, 07:43 AM Just curious, these towns have names exactly the same as those major Canadian cities.

Harkeb March 9th, 2006, 07:59 AM A Commonwealth thing. Interesting though, as Ive never noticed them before. Must be very small towns though. Also, they might get name changes soon, if not done by now- part of the africanization of South Africa.
Wellington is the other common name- as New Zealand's capital.
Durbsboi March 9th, 2006, 08:59 AM Just curious, these towns have names exactly the same as those major Canadian cities.
We have an Ottowa in Kwa Zulu Natal too!:) its on the north coast
♣628.finst March 9th, 2006, 07:26 PM We have an Ottowa in Kwa Zulu Natal too!:) its on the north coast
Ottowa? Or even Ottawa--- don't sound English to me.
dysan1 March 9th, 2006, 07:36 PM uah its ottawa up the coast. so many names in kzn are english...surprisingly there are also loads of german named towns too
datilguy March 9th, 2006, 09:39 PM Berlin, Potsdam are a few examples.......
empersouf March 18th, 2006, 08:38 PM Ok, another question. In June, July and August it's winter in the RSA right?
But are the conditions good enough to go to the beach? If so. please tell me the best beaches and temperatures in RSA.
dysan1 March 19th, 2006, 02:19 PM the only part of the country u can still go to the beach in winter is in KwaZulu Natal. We dont really get winter at the coast, the temp doesnt drop below 15C much and averages 22C and there is no humidity in winter, which makes it wonderful. And if we want to cold winter weather, we take a 2 hour drive from durban to the drakensburg and can go play in the snow and cold.
Cape Town is windy, wet and cold. Due to its mediterrainian climate it recieves most of its rain in winter. it is not advisable to go in winter.
Joburg is just cold, but normally has clear skies from my experience.
But for the best weather, KZN is where everyone heads to get some warmth and tan on the beach
Harkeb March 20th, 2006, 01:57 AM I love to go to the beach during winter, actually. Or just driving along the coast, visiting the fishing villages like Kalkbaai, watching the stormy waves, and seagulls battling to keep direction in the wind...Its a different mood. Mind you, the waters seem to feel warmer in winter!
Durbsboi March 20th, 2006, 08:35 AM ^^ Yes the water is much warmer in winter, but not in Cape Town, you freeze ur balls off there
empersouf March 21st, 2006, 05:00 PM :( That's bad news:(
empersouf March 21st, 2006, 05:02 PM Oh yeah, btw. This might interest you. A fight at my school between three girls;
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=6442265709246828641&q=niftarlake
The media in the Netherlands got mad by this news. It's a crazy world.
mike2005 March 21st, 2006, 05:33 PM Hang on a min cape town is not wet windy and cold in winter, it is just not true! In the cape there can be glorious winter days and often camps bay is full in mid winter and warm too. Yup there can be grey and stormy days but they just add to the charm of the place.
Llanfairpwllgwy-ngyllgogerychwy-rndrobwllllanty-siliogogogoch March 21st, 2006, 05:34 PM Soufian, if you think this will shock people in SA you should read a SA newspaper.
And winter in Cape Town is like our current weather, anyway KZN beaches are better than CT not only because CT has the Atlantic Ocean which is always freezing cold.
KZN has the Indian Ocean which is always warm. Even in June or July you can get hot days, than the weather is just like the Dutch "summers".
Maar tof dat je naar Z-Afrika gaat, echt een vette bestemming
Alleen net als in Maarssen niet alleen over straat 's avonds laat ;)
dysan1 March 21st, 2006, 05:55 PM mike spend winter in durban and then you'll understand why we see CT's winter very differently to the way you see it. Durban is paradise in winter
Durbsboi March 22nd, 2006, 09:03 AM Hang on a min cape town is not wet windy and cold in winter, it is just not true! In the cape there can be glorious winter days and often camps bay is full in mid winter and warm too. Yup there can be grey and stormy days but they just add to the charm of the place.
Yeh a warm day in winter in CT is like winning the lotto & loosing your ticket, cause nobody is prepared for it!
Durbsboi March 22nd, 2006, 09:06 AM Oh yeah, btw. This might interest you. A fight at my school between three girls;
...........
Lol, girls fights or "Cat fights" i was in the middle of a car fight in school, I was a perfect (prefect) so I had to seperate it (after I watched it for 15min) man it was fun the chicks were hot too! there was tits flying everywhere & I had to hold them back grabbing wat ever I could man it was fun, we even had to pin one chick to the ground, its a pitty none of their clothes got torn though :)
But seriously this stuff makes it into your news? man u should visit us, sometimes murders cant find spot into out news & newspapers!
empersouf March 23rd, 2006, 04:19 PM Thanks for the info. I think I'll visit Durban than!
Yes, it seriously was on the news. It really weird. Even the government is talking about it!
Durbsboi March 24th, 2006, 02:39 PM Government talking about school fights? Man I hope a criminal frmo our country doesnt end up in yours, cause he will be hitting headlines everyday!
Llanfairpwllgwy-ngyllgogerychwy-rndrobwllllanty-siliogogogoch March 24th, 2006, 03:19 PM @Durbsboi;
there is a stupid TV channel here that needs to fill up their program so they hype alot of items. Even some old farts who live on a boat became famous because this channel ( SBS6 ) made a daily program about them. Soufian is so thrilled about it because it happened at his school. Of course for years kids get beat up at school, nothing new.
Only because now each cell phone has a camera these kind of fights get put on the web and get more attention. Like the happy slap, which was a "cool" thing in Britain for a while. The kind of crime like in SA will not happen soon in Holland as we do not have the problem of being a 1st world AND 3rd world country at the same time.
