View Full Version : City nature reserves/parks.
Bim February 14th, 2006, 02:43 AM There's a thread in the Leeds forum, and I realised it'd be interesting to see if we have a nature reserve, or much nature in our city.
So, any information or pictures would be great!
Chorltonred February 14th, 2006, 11:34 AM Just behind my house is part of the Mersey Valley park which contains two Local Nature Reserves at Broad Ees (near Sale Water Park) and Chorlton Water Park.
Think birds (of the flying variety).

b4mmy February 14th, 2006, 11:51 AM Took me a while but I found this bit of green closest to the city centre that could do with a few wild seeds sowing on it... and there aren't many others!

rolybling February 14th, 2006, 02:51 PM they should make more of that roundabout, nobody walks on the grass as its not very pedestrian friendly round there so why not put fountains similar to Piccadilly Gardens on each of the green patches we see there, anything to make more of it, make it a nice grand entrance into town. It would look fantastic at night.
b4mmy February 14th, 2006, 03:11 PM I know but they put those crappy ally M signs up didn't they... can't believe they did that.
rolybling February 14th, 2006, 03:13 PM well they can take them down, no big deal, dont you think they should do more with it, make more of a statement there?
b4mmy February 14th, 2006, 03:17 PM Definitely, I think they should get Martha Schwartz or PlanitEDC to have a look at it....
rolybling February 14th, 2006, 03:20 PM I wonder if any city planners watch these forums and take any notice of what we say?
b4mmy February 14th, 2006, 03:31 PM That would be nice wouldn't it.... can't imagine a planner looking much beyond 9-5 myself... its beurocracy at the end of the day, why kill yourself over paper shuffling and admin? (oops... did I should commit professional suicide again - I'll be on the streets at this rate).
Chorltonred February 14th, 2006, 03:45 PM How about a giant statue of George Best bestriding the Chester Road?

rolybling February 14th, 2006, 04:42 PM oh please not Liam Gallagher, the mere fact he's even associated with Manchester makes me cringe, lets not put any bloody statues of him up...please.

dj February 14th, 2006, 08:47 PM Oh god, you'll be renaming the airport next

No, i have it on good authority MAN will be renamed Manchester Bernard Manning Airport
His voice will be heard on the PA announcing arrivals and departures.
In light of the recent hype re the Danish newspaper cartoons I will refrain from using a joke I heard at a comedy club at the Deansgate Locks by John Thompson a few years ago....
There really isn't any so-called 'freedom of expression' anymore I'm afraid.
dj February 15th, 2006, 09:28 AM Can't wait to hear Bernard announce the arrival of PIA 704 from Islamabad, time to cover the childrens ears.

Northbeach February 17th, 2006, 11:58 AM Fletcher Moss in Didsbury is a cracker (the mersey way trail's worth traversing):

dirtyred619 February 17th, 2006, 01:23 PM Clifton Marina and Country Park near me ain't too shabby either.
Northbeach April 25th, 2006, 05:39 PM Took my daughter on her first proper bike ride yesterday on her first 'real' bike (with proper gears like). Ended up zooming around Platt Fields Park chasing Canadian geese ('cept they couldn't care less, hardly scaredy cat pidgeons). But what a great place this is! The ratio of drunks/scallies/students/families et al has become really balanced. Now has bizarre furniture made from trees/skate-bmx park/basketball courts not to mention the lake...what topped it for me though was the emergence of the summer girls (where do they hide in winter?) - taking your kiddy along with you scores some major brownie points with said ladies (nubile joggers anyone?) as I'm sure the fellow fathers on here will agree.
Not only that but there is an almighy view of Beetham (best I've seen yet imo).
Anyone able to fix my scanner (still can't find the right drivers for it and it's way down on my priority list to buy another) gets a free packet of Russion Hob nobs and a couple of photey's of said viewpoint.
