View Full Version : EPSOM | New Racecourse Grandstand | 10,875 | U/C
The Hunted February 14th, 2006, 05:22 PM A phased build programme is due to run from autumn 2006 to spring 2009, avoiding any disruption to The Derby, which will remain at Epsom.
The proposed new grandstand will sit alongside the landmark Queens Stand. It is designed by Limbrick Architecture + Design to create a venue fit for The Derby the most prestigious flat race in the world and for year-round non-racing activities, such as conferences, banquets, concerts, weddings and corporate events.
The proposed design reduces the impact of the grandstand on The Downs by having a lower height and smaller footprint than the buildings it replaces. The proposals include:
a betting, conference and exhibition hall of approx 1,400m²
steppings for 4,312 spectators, contributing to a grandstand capacity of 10,875
a 625-cover banqueting suite and restaurant
a new entrance pavilion and racecourse administration offices
a larger enclosure for the public in front of the new entrance pavilion
space for a new world-class media centre

The new grandstand design is not very impressive and looks like tin shed in my opinion.

Madman February 16th, 2006, 03:34 PM yeah its not ascot by any means, but its hard to tell what it will actually be like from the renders shown.
delores February 21st, 2006, 12:30 AM Looks poor in my opinion...why should it reduce Its imapact on the downs? seems a strange angle to come from?
The Hunted February 21st, 2006, 01:23 AM ^^
I agree.
Perhaps they think the sloping roof will reduce the impact on the landscape, I don't think it will.
Yes it is, maybe they think it will help in the process of gaining planning permission.
The current grandstand refurbished with a new stand to the side would look better in my opinion.
delores February 24th, 2006, 07:44 AM i agree...the new stand looks like a cheap relation to the queens stand and who are the architects anyway? if anything this should of been a competition as its such a prestigous site. And those renders are very poor...

Limbrick Limited are the architects. The price for the project is £23.5 million at the present time.

delores March 23rd, 2006, 02:46 AM looks cheap and nasty.
capslock March 23rd, 2006, 01:22 PM Yeargh! Cheap and nasty is right! :puke:
The Queens Stand isn't exactly earth shattering architecture but compared to this piece of bland shite it's pretty Rolls Royce! How can the planners have allowed this... scrub that, knowing what they've allowed in the rest of Epsom I know exactly how - they're a bunch of clueless tossers.
Rise up people of Epsom and demand better!
The Hunted June 3rd, 2006, 01:40 AM A report on London Tonight (local news) says the work should begin in August.
The Hunted September 25th, 2006, 12:34 AM Edit

Great to see the work starting but the design is terrible.

It doesnt look TOO bad. Admittedly it could be a bit more inspired but given the almost impossible task of getting planning permission in Epsom for anything other than the most uninspired designs its not surprising the town ended up with this.
Check out this lot if you want to see what the town is up against. Their regular newletter makes it clear how hard they fight any proposal that is likely to change the character of the town...

The Hunted March 7th, 2008, 01:51 AM From the Epsom Racecourse website.
"Grandstand on Schedule"
Epsom's exciting £27.6 million Grandstand redevelopment project is still running on schedule. Both the new Grandstand and Hotel are taking shape and the frame of the new Grandstand is now in place, along with most of the steppings and the first lift shaft.

ben77 March 7th, 2008, 12:13 PM The one they knock down looks better than the one going up. 23.5 million for that is unbelievable (someones taking a back hander somewhere).
The Hunted March 7th, 2008, 04:07 PM ^Agreed, every time I drive past it looks more and more like a "D.F.S" is going up.
The original grandstand should have been saved.
Bradley Hardacre March 10th, 2008, 08:15 PM I agree with the comment about it looking like an outlet for DFS. The existing Queen's Stand looks like a block of flats on the Brighton seafront so they should make a pretty pair. I'm sure the home of the country's premier race deserves more than this structure - OK for somewhere like Lingfield but surely not Epsom. The hotel going up next to the racecourse stables is showing every sign of looking just as cheap and tacky.
delores May 25th, 2008, 04:04 AM so its exciting is it? hmmm.

AndrewC May 26th, 2008, 02:39 AM Is this due to be finished for 6th/7th June?
The Hunted May 26th, 2008, 11:53 PM ^No, it should be finished by May, next year.
delores February 15th, 2009, 04:28 AM Is this building finished now?
JimB February 15th, 2009, 05:38 PM I found these pictures on the Epsom race course site. These are the latest ones that they have and they're from November 08:
