Lomé, estimated population 850,000, is the capital of Togo. Located on the Gulf of Guinea, Lomé is the country's administrative and industrial centre and its chief port. The city exports coffee, cocoa, copra, and palm kernels. It also has an oil refinery. Lomé is located at 6°7'55" North, 1°13'22" East (6.131944, 1.222778). [1]

The city was founded in the eighteenth century by the Ewe people. In 1882, the village, known then as Bey Beach, became a major trading centre with the arrival of Chico and Octaviano Olympio as agents for the British trading firm A. and F. Swanzy.

Bey Beach became the capital of Togo when the German rulers transferred capital status from Aneho in 1897. The city then grew quickly until it was taken by the French Army in 1914 during World War I.

Lomé lies in the extreme south west of Togo, up against the Ghanaian border. Attractions in the city include Lomé Grand Market, the Togo National Museum in the Palais de Congrés, a fetish market, Lomé Cathedral, beaches and the former wharf.

The University of Benin is located in Lomé. Togo's main airport is outside the city, while the tallest building in Lomé and in all of Togo is the 2 Fevrier Sofitel Hotel building (102 meters). The former railway line to Blitta runs from the city.

Neighbourhoods in Lomé include Kodjoviakopé, Nyekonakopé, Amoutivé, Tokoin and Bé. The northern neighbourhoods are almost separated from the centre by a lagoon.

Merci beaucoup pour toutes les images mérveilleuses d´un pays que j´ai visité une fois en 1987 ("la belle époque"). J´espère que le Togo sortira bientôt de la crise économique et politique parce que ce pays est vraiment un trésor magnifique pour des invetisseurs potentiels locaus et internationaux et si le pays commence à s´ouvrir graduellement (rehabilitation des anciens hôtels, des routes etc.), j´en suis 100% convencu que le dévelopment reviendra rapidement. Les habitants du Togo sont si d´une gentillesse énorme qui me touche, vraiment.

le voyage au togo fait partit de nos projets, mais pour l'instant, on ne peus pas partir pour des raisons financières, mais dés que l'on pourra, on ira là bas...peus être dans 2 ans comme dans 10 ans, mais si le forum existe toujours je vous mettrai les photos, çà c'est clair !! on ensisage aussi d'aller au Bénin, comme on irai voir la famille de ma femme, la visite des deux pays sera vraiment génial, j'ai vraiment hate.
De ce que je sais, le Togo est un pays suberbe, avec un fort potentiel économique (zone franche du port de lomé, avec de bonnes infrastructures routiéres, un pays qui connait l'autosufissance alimentaire), je me demande vraiment à quoi ressemblera le pays dans 10 ou 15 ans, en espérant que la crise politique actuelle va cessé, et que le pays prendra exemple sur son voisin Béninois, un des meilleur exemple de Démocratie sur le continent africain...

Togo was once called "la Suisse de l´Afrique!" in the late 70´s...I have been there once in my life-time...it was full of tourists back then (although not in the 70´s) I do hope that Togo will come back to where it was once and even build upon it.

Togolese are calm, humble, open and very friendly people as a whole, they deserve all the luck on earth!

Nsukka, that´s not nice what you say..:ohno:.if you visited Togo, you would find very nice and friendly people...and Togo had sunnier days in the past, let´s hope it will get back on track. They truly desserve it!

first of all who ever started this thread posted some real ugly pictures wow, come on highlight on the better features of the city. lome is actually a nice city but the guy who stated the thread made it look like garbage.

The highest building in Lomé. Claimed to be a 5 star hotel during the time of opening. Is now standing deserted. The rumor has it that it is bought by some Libyans who will renovate the whole building with Chinese work force. since libya is in civil war i dont know what is going to happen to it now.....
