F-ian October 27th, 2006, 06:50 AM Bali has a better name and image than the Caribbean: Bvlgari
Monday, October 02, 2006
Alvin D. Soedarjo, The Jakarta Post, Uluwatu, Bali
The Bvlgari brand has come a long way since its inception in 1884. Founded by Greek emigrant Sotirio Bvlgari as a jewelry business, the company, which is based in Rome, Italy, has expanded into the design and hospitality business.
The company launched its second resort in Uluwatu, Bali, on Sept. 23, following the success of its boutique hotel in Milan, Italy.
Below are the excerpts of an interview with Nicola Bvlgari, vice chairman of Bvlgari.
Q: Why did you take Bvlgari into hotels and resorts?
NB: The mission is to have something that represents and emphasizes the importance of our brand throughout the world. The brand is a very big brand.
We already have a place in Milan, which is what everybody is talking about. The hotel is a personal hotel. It's runs alone from the pack. The resort in Bali is our second statement.
This is a kind of resort that stands alone. The message is 'sure we are great jeweler, we have a great luxury brand but we also want people to know that we can venture into this business.'
Now, other luxury brands are trying to copy us. We are number one still. Other are copying us but they are just copying.
Q:Why Bali?
NB: We all know about Bali. It's one of the great resorts in the world. Bali has a name and image, more than the Caribbean.
It's a mythical place. We don't want to do ordinary things like anybody else. The cliff here in Uluwatu is perfect for our location.
Our company respects fully the meaning of the (cultural) background in Bali. There is so much history in Bali so we built our project incorporating indigenous elements from the area.
The design a good blend between western and Balinese styles. We use lava stone from the area for our bungalows and coral stone for the walls. The trees are also local.
How was the transition going from jewelry to the resort business? Jewelry sells by itself. We also made improvements by consolidating the business.
Our business is all over the world. We are developing a Bvlgari building in Ginza, Tokyo, which will stand out. The building will give us prestige.
JW Marriott and Ritz-Carlton (hotels) are going to assist us in this business. Both have been existed for quite a long time and have a good reputation in the industry.
Plus, we are marketing the resort throughout our stores worldwide, such as in Malaysia, China, South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Australia. Bvlgari has a potential huge market in Japan. We have 33 stores in Japan.
Q:What has been the hardest challenge for Bvlgari in the hotels and resorts business?
NB: Location is important. In Milan we have a key location that nobody else has. The hotel is located near a garden in the heart of Milan. It's in the middle of the city.
We are looking for other places in the world like this, Paris, London, New York, Rome, Tokyo. But it's not going to be easy. It could take years before we find the right location. We are not in a hurry.
We prefer to select, think and rethink many times before we make such an important decision. It should be a star location that would attract people automatically.
The rest we do it carefully to make it unique. It's either perfect or nothing.
Q:Where is your next hotel going to be located?
NB:We project that it might be in Paris, France or Tuscany, Italy. But it's a premature estimate -- we don't know yet.
How do you maintain the family business, which has been passed down from generation to generation?
The company has been through two world wars. The CEO of Bvlgari is my nephew, a fourth generation member. He has done many great things for the company.
The third generation are just me and my brother Paolo, the president of the company.
Family businesses are common in Italy. But probably there are more in Indonesia.
Every country has generations of family businesses. There are certainly pros and cons for running these kind of operations. For me, I can't complain. One thing I can say is that we love what we do. We put a lot of energy there, a lot of passion and enthusiasm.
As for the designers of our jewelry, we have a team that consists of 12 people. It's a beautiful team.
Q:Can you tell a little bit of your background?
NB:I live in Rome, Italy. I have three grown-up daughters who live in New York.
I have two sons-in-law and a grandson there so I have an excuse to visit the city often, not only for business but for family. I feel at home in New York, better than Rome in many ways. It's my favorite city in the world.
I also have a new wife and nine year-old daughter who live in Rome. As a family we travel a great deal.
I'm passionate about music, which the company appreciates. I love listening to classical and jazz. I like Beethoven, Bach, Brahms, Mozart and Wagner.
I also organize concert and try to help young artists in Italy. Mostly pianists, cellists, violinists.
This gives us prestige while also developing my passion. Things that nobody else does, we do.
Q:What do you think of Indonesia?
NB:When I come back next time, I want to visit more of Indonesia. I was in Jakarta many times.
Many years ago somebody took me with a chopper to a resort on an island near Jakarta, I can't remember its name, but it was an incredible place.
I am a curious animal, I want to know a lot of things. The world is a big place and I don't like to travel like a suitcase and see nothing.

bahar December 3rd, 2006, 10:05 AM Gluttony, you've done a terrific job here!!! Well presented wonderful pictures.
nanda* December 6th, 2006, 07:48 PM Indonesia is unique in the fact that it can be a paradise for all sorts of tourists... if you want Sun, white sand beaches, vibrant cities and incredible nighlife, FOOD !!!, centuries old monuments, hundreds of different ethnicities, languages and cultures from the mysterious papuan tribes to the refined javanese civilisation... if you want volcanoes, jungle trekking, rafting or diving, amazing landscapes, or if you just want to enjoy five stars hotels facilities, indonesia's the best.
I believe no other coutries in SEA can offer such diverse kinds of Tourism.
To be honest, I think tourism should be a top prority for the government... not only Tourism is a source of foreign currencies income or even an employment booster, but promoting tourism and indonesia's image will also protect our rich culture heritage... I'm telling you that because i''ve seen an ad promoting malaysia culture etc. and do you know what they were showing ???? a batik factory, gamelan orchestra, and women wearing kebayas !!! I was angry and sad at the same time...
I was once working in Niort (France) for an exhibition about Indonesia as an interpretor and there was that woman (from
Jogja who runs a batik factory) who was showing the art of batik... she told me that several malaysian officials offered her to work in malaysia as a batik artisan (in exchange of an interesting wage) but she declined for a lot of reasons.
I really want to alert you that several of our culture heritages are "being stolen". Imagine that one day, you show to a friend of yours some pics indonesia indonesia, and he tells you : "it's really beautiful, it's like in malaysia"... how sad.
I'm not blaming malaysia at all, on the contrary, i think malaysians are smart.
I welcome your reactions
Lastresorter December 6th, 2006, 10:25 PM ^^ As much as I respect and admire the rich cultural heritage of Indonesian, I think it's pretty unfair to say that Malaysians have stolen the cultural heritage of Indonesian. Simply because customs observed by some Indonesian just so happened are observed by some Malaysians (i.e the Malays) as well :) Batik and Kebaya for instance are as precious to the Malay culture as well as to the Indonesian culture.
Of course, when Malaysians promote Malaysian culture, it's more than just Batik or Kebaya, because thats just part of what Malaysian culture is all about. Malaysian Chinese for instance has retained some of the oldest chinese traditions such as Chap Goh Meh and lion dances. Those, of course, are not stolen from China. Some Malaysian Indians (Hindu) still observe Thaipusam and even perform spectacular kavadi bearing ceremony, which many tourists only had a chance to witness it in Malaysia. That, is not stolen from India too. They are just ways of how many Malaysians from all cross of life uphold their beliefs and customs, respectively.
Now that Christmas is near, you see christmas trees and beautiful decorations around and people organise choral singings around town but there's no way that belief and custom is stolen too. They are just part of what Malaysian community is like :)
By the way, wishing my fellow Christian friends here a Merry Xmas and to all others, Happy New Year! ;)

nanda* December 17th, 2006, 09:04 PM ...being stolen ?
since when batik is only a heritage for indonesian :ohno:
I didn't say that the art of batik is being stolen, i said that several of our cultural heritages are "being stolen" (note the " marks, thx)...
Maybe i was wrong to say it that way. It's obvious that the technique of painting or writing on textiles with wax is absolutely not exclusive to Indonesia.
I would only dare to speak of BATIK, and BATIK as an art which reached its peak in skill, artistry and beauty only in Java and Bali, with their proper motives, colours and techniques found nowherelse in the world with clearly known origins : Indonesia.
Now, when I notice, in some foreign advertisements of tourism promotion clearly depecting javanese batik techniques, showing javanese motives... of course I am irritated.
IT IS mean to call it "to steal" (note the " marks, thx), mes excuses monsieur, I should have say "to appropriate" maybe.
paw25694 December 18th, 2006, 03:23 PM ^^ actually malaysian and javanese culture have a lot of similarism..
nanda* December 18th, 2006, 08:44 PM ^^ of course :)
alsen December 19th, 2006, 07:03 PM I didn't say that the art of batik is being stolen, i said that several of our cultural heritages are "being stolen" (note the " marks, thx)...
IT IS mean to call it "to steal" (note the " marks, thx), mes excuses monsieur, I should have say "to appropriate" maybe.
i just want to make this issue more clear.that's all.
btw,as compared to Indonesian batik, which are mystic-influenced and carry illustrations of animals and people, Malaysian batik have brighter hues and more versatile patterns.so,i think that's the different between malaysian and javaness batik. :)
nanda* December 19th, 2006, 07:41 PM Indeed. Thank's Alsen ! :)

Scenery of Sudirman and Mandala Ranges surrounding Puncak Jaya
Lastresorter December 20th, 2006, 10:19 PM ^^ Hey, it's strange that the second highest peak in SEA snows but not in Mt. Kinabalu... I want snow!!!! :( Btw, is Puncak Jaya open for casual tourists (ie. non-hikers)?
F-ian December 21st, 2006, 05:52 AM ^^ thats because Mt. Kinabalu is near the Equator :) Hence snow couldn't survive yes I think it is opened for tourists
From what I read, there were some security problems in 1999-2002 period of unrest following fall of Suharto. However, today there is no security problem, as proven by the many foreign mountaineers who've visited and climbed the peak.
If you want to visit Puncak Jaya, you can enlist with the many adventure-tourism travel agencies. Adventure Indonesia (http://www.adventureindonesia.com/cartensz-welcome.htm) travel agency. Other travel expeditions to Puncak Jaya:
1) Alpine Ascents (http://www.alpineascents.com/carstensz.asp)
2) 7 Summits (http://7summits.com/carstensz/trips.php)
3) MountainGuides (http://www.mountainguides.com/carstensz.shtml)
4) Mountaintrip (http://www.mountaintrip.com/Carstensz_Pyramid.htm)
5) Jagged-Globe (http://www.jagged-globe.co.uk/exp/itinerary/carstensz+pyramid.html)
Type "Carstensz" in Google and you'll find many more travel options.
Appearantly most travellers stayed in Sheraton Timika (http://www.starwoodhotels.com/sheraton/search/hotel_detail.html?propertyID=29) hotel before going to a one-day trek to base camp below Puncak Jaya.
Actually the tallest peak in SE Asia is the Hkakabo Razi (5880 m) in the Myanmarese portion of Himalayan Mountains. Hkakabo Razi is nearly 2kms taller than Kinabalu and 800 m taller than Puncak Jaya.
Mount Kinabalu is 4095 m, 800 m shorter than Puncak Jaya.
However, since Indonesian West Papuan province is considered geographically part of Oceania, Puncak Jaya at 5030 m is the tallest mountain in the Oceania/Australasian region
paw25694 December 21st, 2006, 12:22 PM ^^ we can consider it's in asia! coz it's still Indonesia!*so Soekarno.. hehehe*
paw25694 December 21st, 2006, 12:28 PM @ gluttony, in adventureindonesia.com, it said that puncak jaya is 4884 m high.. i hope adventureindonesia.com is wrong and you're the right one.. :)
Lastresorter December 21st, 2006, 10:15 PM Hmmm.... are there skiing spots up there?
XxRyoChanxX December 21st, 2006, 11:25 PM awesome pics of puncak jaya..
David-80 December 23rd, 2006, 07:16 PM Puncak Jaya is 5030M according to CIA world fact book
but according to http://www.snow-forecast.com/resorts/Carstensz-Pyramid.shtml puncak jaya is 5,775 meters
Puncak Jaya is the highest mountain in the Pacific Basin 18,947 feet (5,775 meters), and is typically considered the highest peak of the seventh continent (Australia/Oceania) for climbers attempting the Seven Summits. It rises from Irian Jaya's steep and rugged Sudirman Mountain range, just fifty miles from the island's southern shore.
some says its 4880 metres but who cares...it snows there anyway
the mountain is open mostly for hiking and rarely for skiing, with government permitt of course.
cheers

================================
Bali Gets High Marks in Australian Safety Audit
One of Australia's leading private security companies, SNP Security, recently completed an intensive four-day safety audit of Bali and its tourism industry that tracked significant improvements in the Island's approach to safety and security.
The Managing Director of SNP Security, Tom Roche, said Bali today is in a visibly and vastly more improved security situation than ever before.
SNP Security was commissioned to conduct the audit by the Sydney-based Public Affairs company S2i Communications who are seeking to quantify claims of security improvements in Bali.
S2i CEO, Wayne Tregaskis, insisted that any revised assessments of security in Bali must be based on tangible facts. "Any claims of Bali being a safe destination for travelers to visit, needs to be treated seriously and the security audit was one such way of doing that," said Tregaskis.
"What the SNP Security audit has provided is evidence that it is an appropriate time for Bali to resume its place on the list of desirable holiday destinations for Australians," he added.
Continuing, "it has also provided an opportunity for those promoting the island to do so with a higher degree of confidence in relation to safety and security matters."
"Certainly travelers everywhere need to maintain a higher level of security consciousness than they did prior to 9/11, but Bali can no longer be singled out as being any less secure than any of the other destinations of the world such as London, New York or Madrid."

I watched a programme on Indonesian volcanoes and the film crew came across these guys - some of the strongest people in the world. theyre small and thin and weighed half of what they did, but they got the biggest bloke with them - the 6"5 cameraman - hefty loookin fella and got him to try and lift one of the baskets. He barely could, with alot of grimacing and puffing. then they got him to try and lift two baskets and he couldnt - basically those yellow sulphur deposits looking like polystyrene, come out there as solid rock.
Then the little Indonesian guy hauled his two baskets up again and proceeded the 7 mile journey down the mountain. He had muscles on his small body Id never seen before. They were getting something like £2 a day for going up and down the mountain 5x.

Liveaboard Vessels Indonesia; Liveaboard Dive Cruises
from the website
Cruising Indonesia: Dive Liveaboards
The Archipelago Adventurer II is a newly constructed Phinisi, traditionally built in Indonesia. Dive liveaboards have been cruising Indonesia for many years, however the Archipelago Adventurer II vessel raises the standards. All of her spacious, luxurious, comfortable staterooms have separate en-suite hot water shower and bathroom facilities, full air-conditioning and all have direct views to the ocean.
She will be cruising Banda and the rarely explored waters of the Maluku Province, concentrating on the fertile, rich and intriguing Banda Sea. Divers and explorers aboard will experience a new concept cruising Indonesia. Dive liveaboards which focus on fine dining, attentive service and a comfortable personal voyage.
The design style of the Archipelago Adventurer II seduces those aboard to spend time outside during liveaboard dive cruises, enjoying delights only experienced sailing liveaboard vessels. Indonesia has a stunning array of beautiful scenery and culture to enjoy. The interior of the vessel is also exceptionally well equipped and relaxing to the extreme. The 18 crew members work tirelessly to ensure she is presented at the highest standards, no request is overlooked.
The Archipelago Adventurer II is in essence a luxurious floating hotel. There is, however, one beautiful distinction; on Archipelago liveaboard dive cruises each morning divers wake to a different view - without ever having to change rooms. With the introduction of the Archipelago Fleet liveaboard vessels, Indonesia becomes more accessible in luxury and comfort.

In fact, you could argue he wrote the book on the subject - The World's Most Dangerous Places, a tome widely considered a handbook for anyone living on the geographical edge. The host of a TV series on the Discovery Channel that visited the world most dangerous places for 5 years from 1998 to 2003, he has written a series of books and creates a regular column on issues concerned with living in a dangerous world. He also maintains an interesting and very unique website at www.ComeBackAlive.com.

(2/5/2007) Robert Young Pelton the American adventurer, journalist and real-life version of Indian Jones is a man well acquainted with risk.
Is Indonesia Safe?
Pelton website contains a world map that keeps tabs on "dangerous places" grading every country on a sliding scale from the very safest or "vacation with grandma" to the most dire destinations on earth classed as "could be your last trip."

The Apo Kayan is a remote highland region in the Indonesian part of the island of Borneo. It is situated close to the Malaysian border in the northwest of the province of East Kalimantan. The headwaters of the Kayan River flow through this area, giving it its name. The thickly forested plateau, which is between 400 and 1700 meters high is inhabited by Kenyah Dayaks. A visit to the Apo Kayan almost guarantees an unforgettable experience.

rilham2new March 11th, 2007, 09:07 PM ^^ Hey, it's strange that the second highest peak in SEA snows but not in Mt. Kinabalu... I want snow!!!! :( Btw, is Puncak Jaya open for casual tourists (ie. non-hikers)?
Eheemm...
I'll explain this.... The tallest mountain in SEA is Hkakabo Razi in MYANMAR which is 5,334 m ..... the second tallest is Puncak jaya in Indonesia which is 5,029 m, .... I dunno aboout Mt. Kinabalu position which just only 4,095..... Since It must be bit shorter than some mountains in Papua Province, Indonesia.... There are about 5-6 mountains which is more than 4,500 m heights in Jaya Range (or just say taller than Mt. Kinabalu)...

F-ian April 1st, 2007, 09:30 AM Pekalongan batik sets world record
Guinness World Records has issued a certificate to the Pekalongan Batik Lovers Association for its feat of breaking the previous record for the largest batik painting in the world, a festival organizer in Pekalongan, Central Java, said.
The head of the Pekalongan Batik Festival organizing committee, Romi Oktabirawa, said Sunday the ******-based record-keeping organization had stated that the association was entitled to receive the certificate following its achievement of creating a 1,200-meter long colored batik painting, which involved 1,000 artisans and was completed in under 24 hours.
The effort was undertaken during the Batik On The Road event on Sept. 16, 2005, as part of the Pekalongan Batik Festival.
"Frankly speaking, we are very proud and thankful over this achievement. We hope the world will always remember Pekalongan for its batik," said Romi.
The previous world record was set by Sarkasi Said of Singapore in 2003, who created a 100-meter batik painting in nine and a half hours.
Romi said the organizing committee had initially e-mailed the verification division of Guinness World Records.
The organizing committee had sent audio-visual data, photographs and coverage by major print and electronic media in Indonesia to back the application.
Romi acted as chairman of the committee, M. Ani Sofyan as video cameraman and Arief Wicaksono as photographer. They were supported by Nusyirwan Tirtaamidjaja from Irwan Tirta Batik, multimedia expert Roy Suryo Noto Diprojo and Larasati Suliantoro Sulaiman, a philosophy and aesthetics lecturer from the Gadjah Mada University in Yogyakarta, who signed the agreement with Guinness World Records.
Batik On The Road program officer, Mohamad Ali Djuffry, said the accomplishment was not only accredited to the association, but was also the pride of the people of Pekalongan.
The association's spokesman, Djudjur T. Susila, said the process of achieving the world record was quite lengthy.
"We received a reply that we'd been shortlisted six months after the feat, and the certificate just arrived in Pekalongan a few days ago," Djudjur said.
"Compared to other cities with their extravagant promotional campaigns, such as Yogyakarta with its 'Never Ending Asia', Surakarta's 'The Spirit of Java', or 'Enjoy Jakarta', ours is the cheapest as it was initiated by the local community."
Pekalongan batik originates from Pekalongan **** and Pekalongan regency. Both areas are known as coastal batik centers. Pekalongan **** has 608 batik business ventures employing 5,821 of its 240,000 inhabitants, while Pekalongan regency has 2,000 batik businesses employing around 10,000 of its 850,000 people.
Djudjur said that following the success of the 2005 batik festival, batik lovers in Pekalongan have planned to organize the 2007 Pekalongan Batik Festival under the theme of "World Batik Fiesta".
"However, this time the Pekalongan municipality seemed to be eager to be involved by taking the initiative to appoint its mayor as chairman and his staff as organizing committee members of the festival," Djudjur said.
"This is all done for the sake of accomplishing the Trade Ministry's Indonesia Design Power program, in which Pekalongan **** is one of its pilot projects."
He asserted that some members of the association perceived that the community-based batik festival should not be split between the **** and regency. It is inappropriate for bureaucrats to organize the event because they are merely regulators and facilitators, he said.
Djudjur added that artisans had continued creating batik designs and techniques in line with market trends. The processes involved in batik-making are unique, he said, highlighting features such as silkscreen printing and the use of eco-friendly materials.
He acknowledged that chemicals had polluted Pekalongan, citing the often-murky river water there.
"However, we have made efforts to avoid environmental damage by requiring factories to be equipped with waste processing facilities. Besides that, the government has also been selective in issuing business licenses. The Chamber of Commerce is also probing the possibility of working together with its German counterpart in waste management technology," said Djudjur.

Indonesian fisherman Yustinus Lahama holds up a coelacanth, an ancient fish once thought to have become extinct at the time of the dinosaurs, in a quarantine pool after he caught it in the sea off North Sulawesi.
JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) An Indonesian fisherman hooked a rare coelacanth, a species once thought as extinct as dinosaurs, and briefly kept the "living fossil" alive in a quarantined pool.
Justinus Lahama caught the four-foot, 110-pound fish early Saturday off Sulawesi island near Bunaken National Marine Park, which has some of the highest marine biodiversity in the world.
The fish died 17 hours later, an extraordinary survival time, marine biologist Lucky Lumingas said Sunday.
"The fish should have died within two hours because this species only lives in deep, cold-sea environment," he said. Lumingas works at the local Sam Ratulangi University, which plans to study the carcass.
The coelacanth (pronounced SEE-la-kanth) was believed to be extinct for 65 million years until one was found in 1938 off Africa's coast, igniting worldwide interest. Several other specimens have since been discovered, including another off Sulawesi island in 1998.
The powerful predator is highly mobile with limb-like fins, and it gives birth to live young rather than laying eggs.
