It looks so grim with the bare deciduous trees. Why didnt they plant cold hardy palms for goodness sake or eucalyptus trees?

Chogmook April 15th, 2009, 07:33 PM He's not having a pop at you, just at the lack of greenery in that view, which is evidently not there! For a place which is supposed to be Piccadilly 'Gardens' it does seem to disappoint! Cheers for the pics though! dom April 15th, 2009, 09:27 PM I'm a massive fan of Tadao Ando's but his Piccadilly Square in Manchester is a unmitigated, concrete, windswept, dystopian disaster. When will architects learn that concrete only really works for interior spaces in Britain or other wet temperate maritime countries unless it is given a proper scrub every 10 years? GanEden April 18th, 2009, 01:04 PM Euclyptus would be a good idea, but they get huge,Palms would make the Ramada look even more Magaluf..esque Not all Gums get big, many are called 'Mallees' which get to about 20ft. Toetallix April 18th, 2009, 01:26 PM I reckon if the sun was shining in that area, wider spread trees making a shaded area, and get rid of those horrible white boxes, that would make a massive improvement. The new students - of whom around 70 per cent will be from the north west - will attend The College of Law's Manchester centre in New York Street. Manchester has the second largest contingent of law students after London, with more than 9,100 currently attending academic institutions here each year. It is predicted that 75 per cent of the new college's intake will remain employed in the region following their graduation. Nigel Savage, chief executive of The College of Law, said: "We're pleased the Manchester legal scene is thriving and that the region is able to nurture talented future lawyers and retain them after qualification. "Our new centre will attract more law students than ever to the city. This is testament to the aptitude of students and the strength of the Manchester legal community. "Many law firms are now thinking about the need to recruit to be in a position to grow when the economy recovers." Of the law students who have completed their training courses in this city, 95.2 per cent work in legal practices, 1.8 per cent work for local government and 0.8 per cent find in-house positions. Sarah Darch, business development manager with responsibility for financial and professional services at Manchester's inward investment agency MIDAS, said: "The city's legal community has grown rapidly in the last two years, and continues to expand. "Recent law firms to open into the city include Shoosmiths, McGrigors and Mills and Reeve. "This is a great time to become part of the legal scene in the north west." The College of Law will be in a renovated building owned by property giant Bruntwood and will initially employ 30 staff. It has established itself as one of the leading providers of professional legal education and training in Europe and, in addition to Manchester, has centres in London, Birmingham, Chester, Guildford and York. A new centre will open in Bristol in 2010. http://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/business/s/1131400_new_college_of_law_to_open_with_500_intake rolybling August 15th, 2009, 07:36 PM http://www.skyscrapernews.com/images/pics/164CityTower_pic2.jpg Where from? Did you know the UN building is shorter than Beetham tower if you include its glass blade! chameleontel August 19th, 2009, 11:00 PM The UN bulding does have a 'Manchester look' about it. Did you know the UN building is shorter than Beetham tower if you include its glass blade! Yes I checked this out on 'Google', and as is often the case, when you see a building such as this in an area like downtown Manhatten, it doesn't look particularly tall. Indeed, in the flesh the UN building appears to be of a similar height to the Manc tower. Incidently I have heard that the design of City Tower was actually based on that of its UN 'big brother'. markydeedrop September 12th, 2009, 08:24 AM http://i867.photobucket.com/albums/ab231/markydeedropg1/City%20Centre%202009/038.jpg markydeedrop October 31st, 2009, 09:28 PM http://i37.tinypic.com/357krgi.jpg tucbiscuit October 31st, 2009, 11:32 PM ^ I really like that picture. manmodsoc December 23rd, 2009, 04:24 PM Lovely 1960's image of Piccadilly and CIS (available as A1 posters from the Manchester Modernist Society http://manchestermodernistsociety.org/publications.html) markydeedrop January 23rd, 2010, 09:19 PM http://i47.tinypic.com/15yekv6.jpg Bachy Soletanche March 6th, 2010, 07:11 PM old skool picture:- http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b351/MrClivver/vinyl%20pics/SH105837m.jpg |
