The airport designs in Australia can only *dream* of ever comparing to the airports in Germany. They are MASSIVE, especially Frankfurt Main. Now *that's* what I call an airport.

From the pics above, it looks like Frankfurt may be considered the major international airport in Germany, and would also serve as a domestic feeder for the other German airports. That's just my impression only, I could be wrong.

Frankfurt, Munich and Dusseldorf are the main German hubs.
Frankfurt and Munich get the lions share of intercontinental traffic while Dusseldorf gets alot of charter/ holiday traffic (ie: Condor). At the moment Berlin is primarily an end station handling almost only European traffic. Once the expansion at Schoenefeld is done Berlin will have an airport large enough to function as a true hub. Tegel airport just isnt big enough and has no real expansion possibilities.

Frankfurt - Hahn is an interesting one.
This airport has taken off (excuse the pun) from being a airforce base / cargo airfield to a reasonably major airport. This as a result of Ryanair using Hahn as their main German hub. Ryanair uses Hahn instead of Frankfurt to save on airport costs. When operations started (I believe it was around 2002/3?) Ryanair had to battle with the majors in court due to Ryanair's naming of Hahn as Frankfurt in its destination list despite Hahn being located 120km from Frankfurt.

With Ryanairs fenominal growth Hahn is set to grow.
