Hong Kong is the first city in Asia to host the World Firefighters Games, from 18th to 25th February 2006. An international fire safety conference and exhibition will be held prior to the Games, from 15th to 17th February 2006.

Following is the speech by the Chief Executive, Mr Donald Tsang, at the opening ceremony of the ninth World Firefighters Games at Tamar Site in Central this afternoon (February 18):

Director Kwok, Mr. Pateman, distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen,

First of all, I would like to extend a warm welcome to all participants of the ninth World Firefighters Games. Hong Kong is honoured to be the first Asian city to host this event since it was launched in 1990.

In the coming week, some 3,000 firefighters from around the globe will have an opportunity to demonstrate their skills and athletic prowess, renew friendship and build comradeship. The Games also give us an opportunity to salute the bravery and selflessness of all firefighters who, in the words of the famous Fireman's Prayer, are called to duty wherever flames may rage and give of their best in guarding every neighbour and protecting his property.

Hong Kong is a world-class city situated at the heart of the Asia-Pacific region and serving as a gateway to the Mainland of China. We are also one of the safest cities in the world, an achievement made possible only with the professionalism and dedication of our uniformed services. In a densely populated city like ours, with an average of 26,000 people living in each square kilometre in built-up areas, prompt and efficient fire-fighting and rescue services are critical. Our Fire Services Department has a proud history in this regard. Over the past five years, the Department responded to about 90% of building fires in built-up areas within six minutes. Through the Department's extensive publicity and education effort, the number of fire calls has declined by more than 15% between 2000 and 2005. Apart from putting out fire, our firefighters and ambulance services personnel also respond to some 20,000 emergency rescue calls a year at the scene of traffic accidents and other calamities.

Ladies and gentlemen, it's shaping up to be an exciting week. The competitive events range from the extremely strenuous "Toughest Firefighter Alive" competition, to the no less demanding fire-engine driving and firehouse cooking competitions. I wish all the participants good luck and great fun. I hope you enjoy the Games, and also take some time to relax and explore Hong Kong, Asia's world city.

Thank you very much.

No flames, but they're fired up - 163 firefighters put their skills to test in mini-Olympics
20 February 2006
South China Morning Post

Firefighters raced up the stairs of the 88-storey Two IFC yesterday - not to rescue lives but to fight it out for medals on the first day of the 9th World Firefighters Games.

Hong Kong ambulanceman Wong Ka-wai, 28, won the gruelling event in 14 minutes 54 seconds, beating 163 competitors.

Mr Wong, who practised two days for the race, said the secret of his success was maintaining a constant speed.

"Because we started at different times, if someone overtakes you, that means he must be running much faster than you. It was very stressful," he said.

First runner-up was Petr Teslik of the Czech Republic, with second runner-up being Canadian Stephen Duijis.

German Matthias Blaschke, 39, said the race had also given him an opportunity to come to do some sightseeing. He brought along wife Barbel, two-year-old daughter Anna and three-year-old son Nils to Two IFC, and planned to stay in the city for three weeks.

Meanwhile at the Tamar site, 50 competitors vied for the title of Toughest Firefighter Alive by performing a series of tasks, normally done at the scene of a fire, in the shortest time. The tasks included a hose run, obstacle course, dummy drag and carrying breathing equipment up 15 floors.

In the dummy drag, which many firemen said was the most difficult session, firemen had to lift or drag an 80kg human-sized dummy made of sand and metal for 50 metres.

"It is very soft but heavy. It is like the actual state of a human when he falls unconscious," said Briton Nigel Hogels.

The 46-year-old said he was taking part to show he could still match his younger colleagues.

Hong Kong is the first city in Asia to host the mini-Olympics for firefighters. And while the competition was fierce, spectators relaxed and enjoyed the events in a carnival mood. Food, beer and souvenirs were abundant and firefighters, residents and tourists alike enjoyed the competition.

The games, which saw the Guangdong team making its debut, are estimated to cost $9 million. They run until February 25.
