Today I read on Danish TTV that a rich guy from Faroe Island, Jakub a Dul, has proposed a new big project north of the capital Torshavn. The project seems to be approved already, and it will include apartments, hotel, offices, indoor football field, skating ring, shopping center, golf course and other things. The project will cost some 1.2-1.5 billion Dkr (~160-200 Million €).

It looks like there are some highrises too, I coun't some 12 floors on atleast 2 of the buildings. A few renderings:

(from the website it looks like the apartments are the 8 buildigns in the front, the hotel is the 2 tall buildings to the left in the back, and the offices are the 2 tall buildings to the right in the back)

Maybe someone can get more info from the project website, I don't understand much of it: http://www.storatjorn.fo

Good news for Faroe Island, which we don't hear much about here. :)

Great news, we hardly never hear anything about construction and developments from there, so its about time! About the project, wow, its large, especially to be in Torshavn, do they really need that many new apartments?

I hope we see much more from this project in near future!

Looks interesting :) As far as I know Faroe Islands haven't got any highrises, can anyone confirm that?

From what I understand, the apartments (the row of houses in the forground on the top pic) should be ten floors each. Still looking at the top pic, the two highrises in the bg to the left is a hotel, while the two HR in the background to the right are offices. No height or floor number given, but as you say, it looks like twelve floor each. The big flat building to the right is a shopping mall, while the buildings to the left is a multiple sports centre. It seems that a golf course will be laid out in the terrain in front of the row of apartment buildings on the top pic.
Too bad the website is only in Faroese.

About the project, wow, its large, especially to be in Torshavn, do they really need that many new apartments? To be honest I have no idea. Eight 10 storey buildings sure do sound like a lot for a town with ~18.000 inhabitants:dunno:

As far as I know Faroe Islands haven't got any highrises, can anyone confirm that?I think that is correct. Haven't seen anything that would be even close.

To be honest I have no idea. Eight 10 storey buildings sure do sound like a lot for a town with ~20.000 inhabitants:dunno:

Yeah, and haven't people kinda moved from Torshavn the latest years, or have they turned the population growth to positive again?

/\ Yeah something like that. The articles said that the project is also build trying to get some of the 20.000 Faroese people living in others countries "back home".

The short article (in Danish): Der er gang i byggeriet ved Thorshavn (http://www.dr.dk/Nyheder/Indland/2006/02/19/051509.htm)

Thats a good idea, but they probably need more than just aparments to do that!

Oh lord, boxy high-rises to a cute little town. :ohno:

I'm not a nimby, but I don't like that project at all. Torshavn will never be Torshavn again with those high-rises...

I don't mind it at all (the project) ... its not really something i would like to see in Copenhagen, but in Torshavn, for sure! :)

Yeah I agree. Been to Torshavn twice and it has a unique atmosphere. However, I can understand that they too want a serious development like that since Torshavn is the economic and cultural centre of the islands. A bold project like this will probably be velcomed by many, especially if they will be able to fund it.

As to the scale, the site will probably be developed in many stages and years may pass before its fully developed. In fact, its very probable that not all buildings will actually rise, and probably not exactly like this rendering perceives.

Very large project for such a small town "in the middle of nowhere".
