Just got a PC at home and broadband, so after years of using work PC's I can add some more pictures of my own. Some shots of a fascinating place, Gibraltar, a UK territory on the southern most tip of Spain. Over the years it has been very strategic, and endured quite a few seiges. There are 32 miles of tunnels inside the famous rock, some big enough to take trucks, and there are also tunneled hospitals, barracks, etc. Also many gun sites, some old from the 1800's and some as recent as WW2 when the garrison was under threat from the Axis and also Franco's Spain.

I went there with my old work on a trip in 2004. The airport is very unusual as it also has the only road that crosses the border into Spain running through it. When an aircraft has to use the strip, they close the road, exactly the same as a train level crossing.

If you ever get a chance go for a visit, it's a tax haven as well, so much cheaper than the UK.

My hotel, lovely place, very 60's, but cool, you could imagine James Bond staying there. The bar at the back, facing the pool and the Med was great, especially as I was on expences for 4 days.

Runway in use, road closed. The border is visible here, it was closed for about 20 years from the 60's to the 80's due to the constant disputes with Spain (they want Gibraltar back, but 99.9% of the population voted to stay British).

Nice pics Aussie Bhoy. I visited there last July. I couldnt resist but park the car right on the runway centreline when crossing. Quite a unique airport indeed.
Its interesting how many tunnels have been drilled through that rock over the centuries. Unfortunately I didnt get to the top of the rock (just some taxfree shopping and a couple of pints). Its a curious little place. Pretty shopping district and in typical British style, lots of monuments and plaques comemorating the history of the place.

You can see part of it (there are a couple of sites) in my last picture.
Since the building of a water desalination plant (1993) it is no longer used.

Here are a couple of other pictures from the net,

Infact, the James Bond movie, The Living Daylights had its opening scene filmed and set in Gibraltar, so you probably could imagine Timothy Dalton staying there while filming.
The Airport at Gibraltar is also going to be used primarily as a civil airport soon with NATS (UK) taking over the Air Traffic Control tower and service there, its mainly a RAF base for the time being with British Airways subsidary GB Airways, using the airport as its main hub.

^^ Is Gibraltar at the top of the picture, with the border at the bottom?
BTW- I've always wanted to see some great pics of Gibraltar. Thanks for sharing.

^^ The picture above is taken from about half way up the Rock cliffs looking North towards the border and Spain, the bulk of Gib is behind.

The border nuetral zone is the grassy strip, you can see the Customs gates just past the airport terminal buildings leading into Spain.
