View Full Version : African Economy
Alexpira February 22nd, 2006, 05:00 AM Some questions about African economy:
A) Africa is better or worse if compared to 1990??
B) Which're the richest countries in the continent?
C) There is any country that could be called "the African Tiger", or that's improving it's economy in a fast pace?
conquest February 22nd, 2006, 05:50 AM i guess libya and s.a are the richest countries
Naga_Solidus February 22nd, 2006, 06:36 AM a) I guess it's probably worse due to the effects of HIV in the region.
b) Equatorial Guinea (PPP $33,994), Mautirius (PPP $12,215), South Africa (PPP $10,798), Libiya (PPP $10,769), and Botswana (PPP $10,169) are the five richest countries in Africa.
Unfortunately, none of them can be considered developed due to their HDI values and ranks. For example, Equatorial Guinea is ranked 121st with an HDI of 0.655 (medium) despite a per capita income of $33,994. The reason? According to the CIA, their life expectancy is only 48 years.
Libiya has the highest HDI value of the five countries listed so far, with a value of 0.799 and a ranking of 58th. The most developed country in Africa is The Republic of Seychelles, with an HDI of 0.821 and a ranking of 51st. This is still not high enough for developed status, but it is pretty close. A list of countries by HDI value can be found here. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_Human_Development_Index)
c) I don't think so, at least not yet. Erm, maybe a resurgent South Africa will take the title in the near future.
datilguy February 22nd, 2006, 08:33 AM 1) Currently, as whole with a few exceptions, Africa is better off now than it was in 1990.
2) South Africa is by far the richest country, not only with its large middle class, but the excellent infrastructure as well.
3)Namibia, Botswana and South Africa could be considered the Lion Coutnries, though I belive South Africa is already too big and advanced to count.
Alexpira February 22nd, 2006, 03:51 PM The richest African countries are similiar to Brazilian standards of income and living (my country), so they (as Brazil) could be considered a kind of "lower-middle class" countries...is nice to contast that Africa has some pockets of better quality of life..
Other questions about Africa:
a) And what about Egypt and Nigeria...I thought that they would also be one of the richest countries in Africa
b) How is the political and economical relationship between S.Africa and the rest of the continent??
hsark February 22nd, 2006, 06:40 PM well basically south africa is the biggest investor in southern Africa and probably in sub-Sahara africa so when the south african economy grows so does the rest of africa(most of the time) south african companies invest in rest of Africa there loads e.g standard bank , engen ,sasol ,nedbank ,fnb ,sappi ,anglo american ,sabmiller ,barloworld ,dimension data ,mondi, ,vodacom and etc for example the biggest cell phone companies in africa are vodacom(south africa) and mtn(south africa) there also starting to enter the northern part of africa like morocco , Tunisia and even middle east like iran so south Africa plays a huge role ps I’m not originally south African so this is not a biased view it is a fact
Matthias Offodile February 22nd, 2006, 09:05 PM In sub-saharan Africa:
In the 70´s and 80´s Nigeria and Côte d´ivoire grew astonishlgy well. Living and Driving through Abidjan in the early/mid eighties was wonderful! ALMOST NO CRIME (believe or not...people left their doors open when they went out, unbelievable nowadays)The poverty was almost absent and the president built social housing at an speedy rate. The country was really wonderful at that time. Even Nigeria was referred to aa the "Brazil of Africa" at then as the country was awash with petrodollars and investors flocking to it in droves.
Today things have changed and South africa has taken the lead with an outstanding infrastructure measured not just by African standards but its position might be challenged in a decade or so as Nigeria awakens with growth rates of 10,3% in 2003 and 6,7% in 2004....Angola is undergoing a great boom and the economy expands in double digit numbers and World Bank says this might continue until the end of the decade (without the war in Angola which formally ended in 2001/2002 it would certainly have challenged South Africa)
Other "rich" countries are defintely the three Indian Ocean islands of Mauritius, the Seychelles and Ile de la Réunion (the latter is a French department but it is geographically located in Africa), followed by resource-rich contries such as Gabon, Namibia and Botswana
I heard that Malabo the capital of Equatorial Guinea is undergoing a building boom (six-lane highways, supermarkets and an entirely new city is under construction)
However, all these small countries such as namibia , Gabon and Botswana do not have any weight as their population together barely exceeds five million which is well below a bigger town/city in Nigeria, just to give you some proportions.
Xusein February 22nd, 2006, 09:26 PM Africa is the last frontier, it has so much potential, it could be radically different by 2050 (wishful thinking...)
While most think that it will be poor forever, it won't. When most of the countries get their act together (no wars, diversify economies, invest more in health and education and less on militaries, AIDS cure), it could be more like the Asian tigers. Remember that back in 1900, China, South Korea, and Japan were almost as low as Africa was. It has the most potential out of any continent in the world.
I have an example, my home nation of Somalia. I know when you think of Somalia, you think starvation, no government, Black Hawk Down, right? Well, it does suck in a few areas (Mogadishu sucks so much right now...)
But when the war FINALLY ends, it will be in a good position. With it's modest population, prosperous diaspora, limitless natural resources (nobody knows what's in it, but gold, silver, oil, and others are though of being there), and being next to Ethiopia with no coastline, Somalia has enormous potential, but the idiots trying to take power don't realize it.
Sorry for the long post!
Alexpira February 23rd, 2006, 12:27 AM I think that if Nigeria, Angola and Congo wakes up that move would shake all Sub-Saarian Africa...like if Brazil started growing with Indian / Chinese percentages every year (something like 7 to 9%) all South America would improve like crazy...
Let's hope for futue....

Africa in general is like a sleeping giant, that is oversleeping and well overdue for an Industrial Revolution.
empersouf February 23rd, 2006, 11:31 AM Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia, Libya and South Africa are the richest countries.
hsark February 23rd, 2006, 11:40 AM u forgot botswana its just got about 1.3million people but in terms of development alot of stuff is 1st world ....and its one of the top rated countries in africa in terms on business and average growth over 10years in some rating its higher than south africa egypt tunisia ...this was a corruption poll the problem is they got aids big time(biggest problem with africa) but trust me visit the place and u'll be impressed
ps. no offence to any one but the G8 are a group idiots they're the ones stoping africas growth
coz if u know how trade works the G8 get so much out of it
empersouf February 23rd, 2006, 11:43 AM ^^
Yeah you right.
Botswana has good roads too. And they recently discovered some gas sources.Plus it's one of the least corrupted countries in Africa.
hsark February 23rd, 2006, 12:09 PM ya that was the poll i was talking about and they've had no civil wars so its very secure the want to make it the business hub of the southern africa unfortunatly that would never happen because of johannesburg which is currently go under a huge redevelopment thank you 2010 :)
empersouf February 23rd, 2006, 12:37 PM ^^
2010!!!!!!!!!!!
It should be in Morocco
According to a research they said 85 million tourists would come to Morocco in 2010....If there was a world cup.
Cause many people(europeans) want to go to Morocco but they preffer other countries first. And the WC 2010 could make a change to that prefferment.
shayan February 23rd, 2006, 02:07 PM Europeans dont like to go to Marocco because of the bad image the maroccans in europe give marocco. Turks give good impressions so europeans prefere Turkey over Marocco... Its just the way people think down here....
empersouf February 23rd, 2006, 02:37 PM That's just a little factor I think.
Turks do have a bad image too. Very regrettable, just like with Moroccans.
But Turkey really expanded the hotels and beach resorts. And it's very cheap to go there too.
Morocco receives over 5 million tourists last year ;) Mainly europeans.
shayan February 23rd, 2006, 02:46 PM yeah ok but Turks have a different image (also bad but not as bad as moroccans). I personally go to Turkey because its really close to my own culture and because of the good offers with the all inclusive resorts if Marocco could develop those i think it would get more tourists. What i mean is that Marocco needs to develop a good tourism infrastructure and than i think everything will fall in its place..

You are talking about the netherlands here, not europe.
empersouf February 23rd, 2006, 05:33 PM ^^
We forgot to say that :p
And Shayan, Morocco is working on the tourism. It's got 5 million, and Turkey got 13 million....
Plus the main tourists go to turkey for the beaches and sun.
Tourists to Morocco mainly go to see culture, and there are some who visit the beaches too.

Turkey receives even more foreign tourists in the recent years
2000 10,4 millions
2001 11,6 millions
2002 13,2 millions
2003 14,0 millions
2004 17,5 millions
2005 20,5 millions
We also get about 3-3,5 millions Turks from abroad every year
It's all about advertisement and investing in hotels.

.
In total GDP you have to include Nigeria too.
Vertigo March 5th, 2006, 01:24 AM Does anyone know a good online resource for statistics about the African economy? I'm interested to check out how the different countries are doing in GDP, growth, etc.
You are to blame March 6th, 2006, 10:22 AM Try the IMF site
