Its continues burning, about four and half hours.

That's rather shocking!

Problem is getting water up there as there may not be any riser system in the building that works yet. Also, it's unclear whether the fire will burn itself out once the timber for the slip or (whatever) has burnt - I would guess at that level the building is not yet fitted out yet. Helicopters may be an idea for putting it out.

My guess is that it was caused by a welding torch or something?

Anyhow, the main thing is that everyone got out safely. Lives are more important than property.

Moscow's night sky was lit up by flames as a fire broke out in a skyscraper which is planned to be Europe's tallest building.

Authorities say the fire started on the 67th floor of city's Federation Tower, which is under construction and is due to have 93 floors when it opens in 2013.

For much of the night, a huge orange plume of flames and smoke could be seen on the top of the tower as the fire burned over several floors.

Four helicopters joined the effort to extinguish the fire, which is now under control.

For several hours they hovered above the Moscow River, using buckets to pick up water and then climbing above the tower to douse the flames.

Officials say because the skyscraper was under construction it had no fire prevention system.

Strong winds and an abundance of construction materials were fuelling the fire.

So far, no injuries have been reported.


The building is part of a group of skyscrapers that make up Moscow's new financial district.

Although it may delay construction in the short term, in the long term, and on the upside, it may actually lead to greater emphasis on speedy completion.

If it was Eurasia that caught fire, I don't think it would have fared as well. The columns are thin and unfireproofed unlike the big concrete beams of the federation tower.

CCTV Hotel is what i was relatin too. Now construction will be delayed again. But then its still not as long as the Ryugyong Hotel.

I think because it happened at night it seemed alot worse than what happended. Lighting up the night sky like a torch. I would love to see some pics of the damaged floor....

Glad to see that the fire didn't cause much damage or result in any injuries. Hope that it won't affect the pace of construction much since the cranes seem to have pulled through fine.

Both cranes are working now, and new windbreak panels are being installed.

This is the first part of the reports on the vertical transport of the Federation complex. Today, we are going to tell you about the unique system of two cabins in the same elevator shaft. ThyssenKrupp Elevator is the first and only manufacturer of elevator equipment, which has implemented the idea of the simultaneous motion of two cabins, moving independently of each other in the same elevator shaft. In one shaft, the two cabins are located one above the other and use the same rails and doors. The cabs can independently move up to the floors, located one above another. Each elevator has its own drive with a drive pulley, and its own counterweight.

There was a huge fire in the tall tower a month ago :(

After the fire they had to:

Check the structure, check the cranes

Buy again some materials, re install it

I am not sure, but as they were pooring concrete just before the fire, I think they have to remove it.

They lost few weeks of work, what a pity...

It definitely not an average price for Moscow. Average bill is 4000 p. Average in Moscow is 960 p. For fast foods - 290 p.

And I wasn't comparing it to small restaurants or especially fastfoods, but more like average for restaurants of the same caliber with famous chefs etc, which doesn't have the same view.

1wtc isn't a good analogy. Try the Kingdom Center.. It's classified as a supertall yet has only 40 something floors...

Federation tower deserves a good height after all the trouble it has been though and also to stick out from the other buildings in the complex.

oh man, this building is a beauty. one of the most futuristic, like in sci fi movies.

The interior is great! Looks like the inside of the Starship Enterprise. The spire is not cheating at all...very much a part of the design.
