^^ Ouch! Rotterdam has 13 skyscrapers over 100m according to emporis. So maybe Adelaide is a bit closer eh Giorgos?

Despite the height difference, I agree that it would be most similar to Melbourne.

Cities arnt judged purely by skyscrapers. Just look at another person who agrees Melbourne is closest match. Adelaide is far too small to be compared to RTD.

As this is a forum about skyscrapers, and the city was labelled as the Netherland's "skyscraper city" I thought I was on pretty solid ground using the amount of "skyscrapers" as a basis for comparison....

That skyline is way to messy and haphazard to resemble Melbourne.

Agreed. Rotterdam's possition in the Netherlands is similar to that of Melbourne in Austr.

Actually Rotterdam's metro population is not that much bigger than Adelaide. RTM aprox 1.4 million, ADL 1.1 million.

Its hard to say. Rotterdam's architecture is completely dif to aus citys.

It's not like any Australian city, I've been to Rotty and there is not much to see. The Germans as they love to do flattened the city centre in WW2 and the local authorities finished the job by building lots of horrid concrete boxes in the decades after.

Agreed. You can only compare Rotterdam to an Australian city in the abstract. The entire make-up of the city is quite different. I agree also about the resulting downtown development as a result of the bombing in WW2. The main shopping district is an hastily put together 1950s-60s eyesore. It certainly isnt an inviting place and a bit depressing.

There is one section however which is very well done. Its a pedestrian underpass/ shopping lane of the main street (Coolsingel) built in the 1990s.

The waterfront is unfortunately not much to speak of and needs some/alot of work done on it.
The Erusmus Bridge is beautiful however.

Maybee lots of people are saying Melbourne because of the weather in the pic??

Just going off that pic, since I havent been there, I would have to say Melbourne. I dont think it resembles adelaide at all given that adelaide is no where near dense enough. Its a really hard thing to compare given that Australian cities are developed in a completely different way.

Instinctively I'd have to say Melbourne, their docklands have much in common. The architecture is very similar - contemporary international style.

Ah of course, because as we all know rain clouds are native to Melbourne, and can't be found in any other capitals in Australia....*ahem* wettest capitals *ahem* Brissy and Sydney.... :runaway:

As said of course you can compare Rotterdam (or any other dutch city for that matter) to an Australian city only in the abstract. As an almost regular visitor to Rotterdam, to go to the Architecture Institute there, I think I have a good feel for the place. Some parts of the city are absolutely horrible, the main shopping street is somewhat depressing and the city definitely has its back turned to what could be a magnificent waterfront. Howeber it really is near the cutting edge of architecture. The city has an unfortunate history and trying new things out seems to be the idea behind everything that gets built there, even the depressing shopping street.

Don't take it the wrong way, but I would wholeheartedly say Rotterdam is most like Melbourne. You can look at the comparisons in many different ways-
2nd most famous city (after Amsterdam and Sydney)
Major industrial centre
Large port facilities close to city centre, with a river on the city's edge
Both are renowned for design, as opposed to ther things in other cities
Both are thought of as the skyscraper capital of their countries

To me it seems only obvious to say Rotterdam is most like Melbourne

Cheers

It is not the rain that made me think of it but the clouds. If you have a look of this map that Jay T posted it shows the average amount of sunlight per day. I rest my case:

^^ Thats a year round figure....Melbourne is certainly cloudy in winter, but have a look at the average sunshine totals this summer period for Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne....
Brisbane:
November: 8.4
December: 10.4
January: 9.1
February: 9.3
March (so far):6.2
total average: 8.68 hours a day

Sydney:
Nov: 6.7
Dec:10.4
Jan: 6.2
Feb: 7.3
Mar: 6.4
Total: 7.4 hours a day

Melbourne:
Nov: 8.6
Dec: 9.7
Jan: 8.4
Feb: 8.5
Mar: 9
Total: 8.84

We just suffer with equally low numbers in winter =(

So what...I can now say that Melbourne is hotter than Brisbane because its average February Temperature is hotter than Brisbane's average July temperature!!!

A bit of a met lesson...Brisbane has its wet months in Summer and Melbourne has it's wet months in Winter. So to get a good comparison between the two cities, you need to compare the averages over an entire year. Also initially when I made the comment, it was about how overcast and gloomy it looked. When it rains in Brisbane, it is regularly not of the overcast drizzley type even though we get it sometimes. Melbourne seems to get more of this style of weather (though not all of the time). The weather in the pic of Rotterdam, to me, is the weather you'd expect mostly in Melbourne or Hobart out of Aus. capital cities, and Rotterdam looks more like Melbourne than Hobart, hence my original comment. Rant over!!! :)

Woo down....i'm just saying that the sterotypical image of melbourne as gloomy is only half the picture....yes its gloomy in winter, but its sunnier than alot of other "sunny" cities in summer....
PS here is a met lesson for you, melbourne is actually dry over winter, its just there are more rain days then. Wettest month is october with 67.4mm on average, driest is 47mm in feb. july is the next driest.

Melbourne in winter is grey and DRY...it doesnt really rain.

Melbourne in summer is warm and sunny....it really only rains when it thunders.

Melbourne in spring is the worst for me...its warm and sunny, wet and windy and everything in between....SPRING IS WHEN IT RAINS THE MOST.

Autumn is just great...fine sunny and warm...the Commonwealth Games proved that.

Absolutely none surely?! Except for the fact that some of our cities (Sydney)are 50% migrant. Although maybe Newcastle or Wollongong or Geelong, as they're also rather ugly industrial centres like Rotterdam (waar lecht dar dann?!)

You call Rotterdam an ugly industrial city? Ha ha ha, yeah right... Rotterdam is a modern and (more and more) friendly city with a lot of commerce. Okay, there's a lot of industry buth which modern big city hasn't? Anyway, your Rotterdam (waar lecht dar dann?!) isn't right either, it is: Amsterdam, waar lecht dat dan? as it is from the 'Euromasters', an oldschool Rotterdam hardcore-act! But of course I like the comparison between Rotterdam and Melbourne (but in terms of height and density they're way out of our league) as I consider it Australia's most beautiful skyline
