View Full Version : Scottish meet up thread
tayser February 24th, 2006, 03:30 PM cmon weegies, pull yer finger out.
who's up for one? suggestions?
My knowledge of Glasgow is pretty much limited to Buchanan/Sauchiehall Sts ( ), so I'm useless for suggestions (bars and what not).
What about over here in Edinburgh - anyone keen?
(sticky thread?)
cheers.
Chief February 24th, 2006, 08:29 PM Yeah, I'd be up for something. Venue-wise, maybe something in the merchant city?
mahavira February 24th, 2006, 11:35 PM count me in
gorgu February 25th, 2006, 06:56 AM Due to sheer weight oif number would it not be better to get you guys over to Glasgow for the inaugeral meeting, after that the show can go on the road, also would give you a chance to discover how much more to glasgow there is aside from Suachihall and Buchanan St ;)
tayser February 25th, 2006, 01:30 PM yes yes, but if the locals want to suggest a place and have a pint or ten, they hey why not.
Glasgow's a piece of piss to get to, so I'm up for either really :D
M_Riaz February 25th, 2006, 04:42 PM Aye i'd be up for this and see all yer coupons face to face.
Get a wee drinky poo and shout at each other for a while....good suggestion Tayser. :)
tayser February 25th, 2006, 07:07 PM ...and boy do the scots shout & drop the f-bomb a lot.
I feel right at home  :D
The Boy David February 25th, 2006, 08:16 PM Hehe foul mouthed banter is a national speciality :)
Well I'd be up for a meet up - just name the time and place (Merchant City is fine with me - the Beer Cafe is one of my most favouritist places on Earth  )
gleegie March 6th, 2006, 08:06 PM If this is to work we need a venue, that seems to be the Beer Cafe, but also a date, I propose Thurs 16th... and time, I would suggest 7pm.
If two or more say's "aye" we're on, if one or more say's "naw" BUT propose alternate date(s)/venue(s)/time(s) AND can garner two or more signatories... they're on. Otherwise it's off.
Capiche?
"signs with electronic pen".
The Boy David March 6th, 2006, 10:08 PM Right-o Gleegie - your bang on, someone needed to take control.
And I'll be there - should be interesting!
What about some of the other guys - Crusty, Gweilo, aland? What say you? :)
Chief March 6th, 2006, 11:30 PM I'm down for that - my Thursdays are usually free. Hopefully it'll still be free come next week!
Russell1 March 7th, 2006, 01:58 PM Cant do weeknights right now lads sorry :(
M_Riaz March 7th, 2006, 02:04 PM My flexitime is a non starter for me... time i'd get there half the meet would be over, not this time for me maybe the next. :)
tayser March 9th, 2006, 12:24 AM What about the friday night?
I'm moving into Easter road on the Wed night, I'm still as keen as mustard to come over there though.
The Boy David March 9th, 2006, 01:11 AM Glad to see you are enthusiastic, tayser :) I can't do next Friday though, got a wedding to go to...
Well I reckon that if we are going to do this then we should do it right and find a time that would suit mostly everyone willing to go.
What about weekends, then? I reckon that seeing that most of you guys are working, maybe a saturday evening would suit better? I can't do the next two weekends, but after that I'm free every weekend for ages.
Chief March 9th, 2006, 02:05 AM Some time over the Easter weekend? Or if not, then the first/second weekend in April?
solidred March 10th, 2006, 01:58 AM nice idea.
I'd love a meet-up of, like real people.
You'll all have to wear black polo-necks, though, or I'll just start discussing chaos theory with random strangers
Chief March 10th, 2006, 02:33 AM I'll be wearing a high-vis jacket and a white hard hat.
I suggest we all do the same. Safety boots optional.
maccoinnich March 10th, 2006, 02:37 AM If someone's willing to go as an American Indian it could be quite a night.
The Boy David March 10th, 2006, 02:43 AM Good stuff - the more the merrier!
The rest of you guys, what do you reckon - is a weekend, possibly a saturday, maybe 3 weeks from now ok with you all?
outofchaosaworld March 12th, 2006, 01:49 AM Can we assume PPP architects are unwelcome? ;-)
crusty_bint March 12th, 2006, 03:33 AM You're more than welcome Outo :) I'll come too
tayser March 12th, 2006, 04:11 PM Good stuff - the more the merrier!
The rest of you guys, what do you reckon - is a weekend, possibly a saturday, maybe 3 weeks from now ok with you all?
"aye" =P
What about April Fool's day (seriously :)) - Sat April 1?
tayser March 23rd, 2006, 12:20 AM Coming over on Saturday, who's up for a walk about town / beer thereafter?
The Boy David March 24th, 2006, 03:34 AM Sorry didn't notice your post Tayser!
Well I'm not sure if I'll be in the town on sat (im back home for Easter break) but if enough folks will come out, I would be up for coming in too :)
gleegie March 24th, 2006, 08:56 PM This Sat I can't do.
Going to the Country Living Spring Fair (of all places).
Chief April 6th, 2006, 12:15 AM So what's the dillio with this?
Are we going to try and arrange a time most people can attend? Or are we giving up on the idea?
tayser April 6th, 2006, 07:54 PM very good question.
The Boy David April 12th, 2006, 06:37 PM very good question.
I kind of feel bad about the lack of organisational skills we've shown here.. Fair play to you Tayser, good of you to try bring the forum together like this, shame we are all such a busy bunch :)
What about an absolute date? It's clear we have to do it on the weekend, and the Merchant City (Beer Cafe) is a fine venue, so thats all fine. There are enough of us willing to go, so thats not a problem either.
So dates. I say Saturday the 29th of April. Gives us all plenty of time to keep a clear diary for then.
What say you guys? :)
Chief April 12th, 2006, 08:25 PM I'm in.
Socceroo April 12th, 2006, 11:06 PM How about a paintball contest first in the woods somewhere. Momus and outofchaos V The Rest. :)
outofchaosaworld April 12th, 2006, 11:11 PM Ach you all love me really ;)
Momus April 12th, 2006, 11:27 PM Ok, but you'll lose......
Especially if 'Outof' brings his PPP gang....
outofchaosaworld April 12th, 2006, 11:37 PM Ok, but you'll lose......
Especially if 'Outof' brings his PPP gang....
You should see the damage i can do with my cookie-cutter....
The Boy David April 13th, 2006, 01:26 AM  @ Momus - a PPP gang assembled by Captain Chaos would be a sight to behold
Good man chief, but for the rest of you guys, whats the verdict?
gleegie, crusty, aland, m_riaz, murdomac, russell1, maccoinnich, spacey, gweilo, kentigern, socceroo, tayser, chaos, tonytowers, bingo bango, meagain, get13, momus, solidred, socrates, be_happy and vvill: are you up for it? (apologies if I missed your name, by the way, was just a hasty list of regulars that I could remember :))
I really think this would be worth the effort to finally put some faces to the names + consume alcomahol
tayser April 13th, 2006, 09:16 PM I am, lock the fecker in Davo! :D
no, I want to be a millionaire! :D
I'm heading over to Glasgow again sometime this weekend too, so if anyone wants to have a drink, let me know.
M_Riaz April 13th, 2006, 09:59 PM Ok i'll go if everyone else goes, but what time? i have another function to go to that day in the city centre, so i could kill 2 birds with 1 stone.
Mo :)
tayser April 13th, 2006, 10:20 PM say 3pm then just kick on til whenever?
saturday arvo in the pub sounds grand :D
murdomac April 14th, 2006, 10:05 AM Thanks for including me on your list Boy David but I am unlikely to be able to attend for a number of reasons:
1. I am a Wiglie. (Work In Glasgow Live In Edinburgh.)
2. Very Busy at Work.
3. But much worse. I am an old (ish) married man with three children and weekends are pretty much constant taxi driving.
Sometimes I think that my social life is reduced to a series of black tie dinners eating rubber chicken in the Hilton or Thistle Hotel sourrounded by 600 quantity surveyors and structural engineers. See what the the future holds for you young guys going into the property industry!
Hope it come off and best of luck.
crusty_bint April 14th, 2006, 03:18 PM I'm not so stuck on the Beer Cafe but as i have nothing better to suggest... I'll go with that :)
Or... how about Alan buys us all the first drink in Collage (Radisson)? hehe
Murdo... the world is what you make it mate ;)
The Boy David April 15th, 2006, 02:24 PM Good stuff guys - so far thats Me, Chief, Crusty, Mo and Tayser for sure - what about the rest of you guys?
3pm is grand for me, btw - a nice, cheeky wee afternoon drink
But murdo! Alas just cos' your older, doesn't mean you can't hang out with us young-uns' ;) Anyway no bother if you can't make it, if you have a change of heart though then fantastic :)
Crusty - if you can suggest a better venue then go for it - I'm not so familiar with the Merchant city, the Beer Cafe is all I know - that and the also excellent Bar-91 - maybe that would be a better venue? It is just across the road afterall :)
The Boy David April 15th, 2006, 06:09 PM Sorry Boards - I totally forgot your name in the list as well - was not intentional I can assure you!
Would you be up for it?
gleegie April 15th, 2006, 06:43 PM Sat 29th April, beer Cafe @ 3?
I'll get myself down.
We don't have to stay there all day.
The Boy David April 15th, 2006, 07:52 PM Nice one Gleegie - thats 6 of us on board now :)
Skyescraper, seeing that your back to the forum, you should come along too :)
Skyescraper April 15th, 2006, 08:05 PM I might be working up in Skye that weekend but if not i'll be there for sure
tayser April 15th, 2006, 10:09 PM Looking forward to it. Where's this beer cafe? address/postcode (so I can look at a map :D)?
cheers.
crusty_bint April 16th, 2006, 12:12 AM No Davey, no better suggestion from me... we'll see where the ale takes us as Gleegie said :)
Beer Cafe is in Merchant Sq (formerly Candleriggs Market), on Candleriggs in the "Merchant City" donchoo know... ;)
tayser April 16th, 2006, 11:02 AM I do now ;)
ta.
The Boy David April 16th, 2006, 11:21 AM I do now ;)
ta.
Good good :)
Nice signature btw ;)
maccoinnich April 16th, 2006, 11:54 AM A fairly original take on the old joke: "What's the best thing to come out of Edinburgh/Glasgow? The train to Glasgow/Edinburgh"*
*Delete as appropriate.
Don't know if I can come or not. Aside from anything else, I had made a resolution to stop meeting people off the internet. (This wouldn't be the first time...) Also, it will really depend on what I'm doing that weekend. Anyway, I'll let you you know closer to the time.
Socceroo April 16th, 2006, 12:22 PM Don't know if I can come or not. Aside from anything else, I had made a resolution to stop meeting people off the internet. (This wouldn't be the first time...)
Was she that ugly? :hahaha:
Sorry macco just had to jump in there before someone else did.
tayser April 16th, 2006, 02:28 PM A fairly original take on the old joke: "What's the best thing to come out of Edinburgh/Glasgow? The train to Glasgow/Edinburgh"*
*Delete as appropriate.
tee hee, "What's the best thing to come out of Melbourne/Sydney? The Hume Highway!" etc.
http://www.wilmap.com.au/stripmaps/maps/hume.gif
cmon macco, you've gotta come, I can't be the only one from the east (even though I'm an honourary resident)! There's gotta be someone else they can hang shit on!
btw, on a point of order, I've noticed in the Victorian forum, it's always good to alter the meet thread title to show when and where the next meet is, click (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/forumdisplay.php?f=197) for example (ignore the past date :D)
The Boy David April 16th, 2006, 06:35 PM Ah, been burnt by that old chestnut before, maccoinnich? Lol Socceroo, I suppose it had to be done :)
Still, lets be honest - it's perfectly clear what type of people we are on here; I don't reckon we'll be in for too much of a surprise when everyone bursts into the Beer Cafe full of architecture-fueled enthusiasm ;)
You should try your best to make it though mate - a proper representative from the East would be a welcome addition - tayser and I being there ensures that you won't be the only one wanting to talk about Edinburgh :)
gleegie April 16th, 2006, 06:53 PM Macca's right, we should say a piece about ourselves prior to a meet, if only to dispel any misconceptions we may harbour of one another.
I'll get the ball rolling shall I?
My name is Pete, I'm 43 years... young!! and I live with my mum and our six "babies" (Rocky, Pitt, Savage, Dober, Fangs and Fifi-trixibelle).
I've been unemployed the past few years (since the meat packing plant closed, more time for Skyscraper!), and although mother is largely bed ridden these days, I'm sure she will allow me this one night off.
PLEASE do not be alarmed by the surgical scarring, doctors assure me that hair WILL grow back eventually and any violent mood swings are mere side effects of present medication, NOT manifestation of any genuine hatred toward specific forum members.
:)
crusty_bint April 16th, 2006, 08:24 PM hahaha
well... I'm Dame Grimthorpe of Strathbungo, 174 years old at the last count ;) Was John Carrick's bit on the side for a few years back in the early days of Victoria's reign. I helped lay the first transatlantic cable with nothing more than my wooden teeth and the inflated gall bladder of a sperm whale between my ricketty legs and was an early pioneer of the use of rain-mates for the protection of external concrete and silica based render.
Embdy want a sweetie?
Chief April 16th, 2006, 08:32 PM On second thoughts, I think I'm washing my hair that afternoon... sorry guys...
tayser April 16th, 2006, 08:34 PM Embdy want a sweetie?
:hilarious
oh, this is going to be gold.
The Boy David April 16th, 2006, 09:20 PM Hehehe - indeed guys - this may turn out to be very interesting.
Well as you may know by now, I am Captain David Birdseye. I specialise in the creation of healthy and nutritious meals for youngsters, helping them to grow up big and strong without eating any dangerous additives (see my latest advertising campaign 'N is for: "Not in my food"'). Whilst I spend most of my time experimenting with all kinds of manufactured super-fish (they just grow so goddamn big!), I also enjoy using my Calligraphy set mother gave me back in '56 - I can write anything you ask me to pure dead brilliant (I should have copyrighted that back in '79) and with only marginal discomfort.
I have many children, most of whom I do not know.
Lastly, if you take every word I have written in Italics and rearrange the letters in a certain combination, it will reveal where I was born, and more importantly, where my treasure is buried
maccoinnich April 16th, 2006, 10:15 PM I only said that I intended to stop meeting people off the internet; not that it can gone badly in the past (in fact it's gone well). I'm now beginning to wonder if you lot might just be a little creepy though.
Chief April 17th, 2006, 12:37 AM A little?
Russell1 April 17th, 2006, 01:54 AM I think im in town that night for a wee night out so id probably show face, would be cool to meet some of you
Momus April 17th, 2006, 01:07 PM As much as I would like to witness 'Captain Chaos' and the 'Michelin Man (at work)' arm wrestle for that illustrious packet of Scampi Fries and title of supreme Skyscrapercity anarchist, I shall be out of the country.....will someone take some pics?
Socceroo April 17th, 2006, 01:13 PM Momus out of the country.....safe for me to appear then.... :)
Momus April 17th, 2006, 02:15 PM yeah, I'm a pass-a-fist...... ;)
Socceroo April 17th, 2006, 06:15 PM Where you off to Momus on your trip.....Morocco to look at some real render and get some inspiration ?... :|
Momus April 17th, 2006, 06:55 PM France.
To see if I can find something even cheesier than your comments....
The Boy David April 18th, 2006, 04:29 AM Nice one Russell - glad to see you can make it - will be great to finally meet a superb photographer such as yourself :)
---------------
Hehehe ladies - more bickering, eh? Shame you both can't make it....
Socceroo, can I count you in?
That would be us up to 8 if you are up for it
The Boy David April 18th, 2006, 04:52 PM I might be working up in Skye that weekend but if not i'll be there for sure
Nice one mate - hope you can make it :)
tayser April 22nd, 2006, 12:27 AM bump a week to go...
weeee.
Wilforbes April 22nd, 2006, 03:13 AM Just so that I've not missed this.
(Oh, sh*t, he's coming along?!)
Its next Saturday; 29th April; in the Beer Cafe; in the Merchant City; in Candelriggs; in Glasgow.
Will I need I.D.?
Wilforbes April 22nd, 2006, 11:19 AM [Sheepish & somewhat fuzzy – seven hours later]
Eh, me again. Apologies to all for last night’s performance. Me and my pal Macallan thought it would be a spiffing ruse to dominate the forum. Although only ten years old he does hold some influence over me. After a wee while with him I become quite infantile and, once started, I just can’t seem to get him to put a cork in it.
One thing I’ve learned – never go back to revisit a night out with Macallan. So, sorry to anybody I have upset. If we do meet up in the Beer Café next week I’ll be the one with the red face, drinking the orange juice.
The Boy David April 22nd, 2006, 02:47 PM Hehehe, thats quite an interesting monologue you're having there, wil - this Macallan character sounds like quite a trouble maker... :)
Thats quality though - good to see you're coming :)
Thats us up to 9 now - Socceroo, are you gona be the 10th?
Looking forward to this, chaps :)
Socrates April 22nd, 2006, 03:10 PM http://i3.tinypic.com/w6v2is.jpg
tayser April 25th, 2006, 11:49 PM ^
The Boy David April 28th, 2006, 03:24 PM Well guys this is it - just one more day til' history is made :)
Should we put up pictures of ourselves so that we know who to look for, or should we just wait til tomorrow to add to the excitement?
Also, just a quick post to say your definetly going would be nice... a couple of you were undecided - have you come to an executive decision yet?
One more day
Chief April 28th, 2006, 04:19 PM Yeah I was wondering about how we'd find each other as well...
Also, I'm not 100% I'll be able to make - parents decided at the last minute that I have something more important to do. I'll try to make it, even if only for a short while.
sisterblue April 28th, 2006, 05:21 PM Go on boys, post pictures!
How else will the ladies know whether it's worth coming along or not!! ;)
gleegie April 28th, 2006, 08:00 PM I'm much too modest for that, you won't know what you're missing less you go!
The Boy David April 28th, 2006, 09:01 PM Well i suppose someone is going to have to post a mug shot, or we'll all be wondering around aimlessly, to shy to approach people asking if they are "Outofchaosaworld"......
Here I am then..
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y124/the_boy_david/noucampstuffssc.jpg
Hair's a bit shorter now, but I'm sure it won't fool you lot too much....
Yes I do play for Barcelona, but only when they need a helping hand
maccoinnich April 28th, 2006, 09:55 PM Ooh, a good old News of the World style name and shame.
Real name Iain

Belter of a day for it.
gleegieboy,
you really live straight below me i think (maybe 2 floors lower?). mmmm. :) i can just overlook the building in front of us.
Chief April 30th, 2006, 12:50 AM Thanks for the pics maccoinnich. I had a great time - really gutted I couldn't stay for longer. We should definitely do this again sometime.
No chance I'm going to a meet in - pah - Edinburgh, though. No chance! :)
M_Riaz April 30th, 2006, 12:56 AM Aye good to meet you all lads, sorry i couldnt stay longer either... aye hopefully the next meet i will spend a bit more time with ye all.
Look forward to the next time. :)
gleegie April 30th, 2006, 01:45 AM Great night guys, good turnout.
gleegieboy,
you really live straight below me i think (maybe 2 floors lower?). mmmm. i can just overlook the building in front of us.
Ha ha! Give me a couple of months, I may leapfrog you! :)
Momus April 30th, 2006, 03:22 AM Ah, the Magnificent 7 in all their glory...(and in no particular order)
I see Socceroo didn't make it either.
Didn't quite earn a weekend pass for good behaviour then? ;)
http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i298/momus16/mag7.jpg
Chief April 30th, 2006, 03:47 AM Bonus points if you can name the dwarfs in the order they appear in the illustration...
gleegie April 30th, 2006, 11:54 AM Snow White was notable by her absence.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v205/gleegieboy/snow.jpg
Momus April 30th, 2006, 12:21 PM Snow White was notable by her absence.
LOL Very good! :)
But why always the references to LQ? Is it the only one which has lost its virginal white status?
Glagow April 30th, 2006, 01:03 PM That 7 dwarfs picture is cracking. Sorry I had to go early, it was good stuff.
Skyescraper April 30th, 2006, 01:57 PM Nice to finally meet some of you chaps. Good beer and good banter!
Sooo, when's the next one? Perhaps a trip through to Edinburgh wouldn't be such a bad idea... always good fun boozing in a foreign land!
tayser April 30th, 2006, 02:11 PM got your passport at the ready Skyescraper? :D
The Boy David May 1st, 2006, 09:35 PM Hehe great pics there guys :)
Thats me just back from Aberdeen, most interesting weekend ;)
But yeah, was a great day, I'm really glad that so many turned up - cheers guys for all coming out and making an event of it.
Here's to many more - next time I'm sure we'll get even more folk around, now that the water has been tested... Fair play to you maccoinnich and tayser for traveling that extra mile or 50 to come for a drink, and cheers Glagow for pitching up - most unexpected :)
Anyway, cheers, and I look forward to the next one..
Russell1 May 2nd, 2006, 09:16 PM All the photo buffs will need to have a meet up when the next light festival comes around, not for a while yet tho :( Looking forward to another meet though, stay a bit longer and meet the guys who I missed on saturday.

Not changed a lot, has it.
tayser June 3rd, 2006, 12:32 AM What's everyone's thoughts on Sunday 23rd of July for another beer? me and the Victorian mod of OzScrapers silvermb will probably be in Glasgow that day.
or there's always the possiblity of meeting up half way, say in....Cowdenbeath? not ;)
Chief June 3rd, 2006, 02:05 AM I'm definitely up for another meet sometime before mid August. I don't I'd be able to make it on that day, though - not sure yet. Perhaps the week after?
The Boy David June 6th, 2006, 10:29 PM Hey yeah I'd be up for a meet in July - it would definitely have to be on the weekend though, as I'll hopefully be back in Edinburgh working from Monday onwards.
So yeah - count me in on the 23rd for now, but I'll be able to know nearer the time whether I'll definitely be able to go :)
solidred June 14th, 2006, 01:26 AM My IP address keeps getting banned from this site. Their computers must know more of what I'm capable of rather than of what I've actually done, which is all vanilla, heh.
Anyways, for that reason I missed the last meet-up. Sunday 23rd's good for me too.
outofchaosaworld June 14th, 2006, 01:37 AM Oddly i got banned too. I am sure i didnt deserve that....really...i think they have been block banning certain ISPs.
Chief June 14th, 2006, 02:17 AM I was banned too for about a week of so. Emailed Jan and got a reply saying it was because they were trying to get rid of someone they really didn't want to have on the boards, and to let him know if I was still banned in a few days' time.
I got this . close to emailing him! :)
Still on for a meet up in July? Sadly, I don't think I could make one unless it was in early August. Such a busy summer lined up! :)
The Boy David June 14th, 2006, 06:28 PM Still on for a meet up in July? Sadly, I don't think I could make one unless it was in early August. Such a busy summer lined up!
It would be a shame if you couldn't make it mate, but don't worry - just cos' we have one in July doesn't mean we can't have one in August as well :)
Glad to see you would be up for it Solidred :)
Wilforbes June 19th, 2006, 02:12 AM Guys, see my new thread.
http://skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=363856
How's about spicing up the next meet up with a little light relief?
I am suggesting a competition on Glasgow with the prize for the winner awarded at the next meet up - 23rd July?
Any takers?
tayser July 11th, 2006, 12:22 AM update guys?
Dave if you come up with another idea, send me a text, were still free on the sunday, cheers.
solidred July 13th, 2006, 12:46 AM Yeah, I keep checking this threads for updates as the idea (apart from the date) seems to have lost momentum. Do we have a leader? Someone offering free beer (and orange juice for me)?
The Boy David July 13th, 2006, 07:13 PM Well I'm still up for the 23rd - I suppose it's been quiet up til' now cos' it's still a couple of weeks away.
But yeah - I'd be up for any venue - we could try somewhere else in the Merchant city, or we could take ourselves down to sauchiehall street - plenty o' bars down there, I tell thee :)
Kentigern July 14th, 2006, 02:28 PM I'm back in the country for a brief period, and may be able to make the 23rd.
You lucky people! :P
The Boy David July 14th, 2006, 09:52 PM I'm back in the country for a brief period, and may be able to make the 23rd.
You lucky people! :P
Good man! Hope you can make it bud :)
M_Riaz July 14th, 2006, 10:05 PM No can do this time guys, i have a wedding reception to got to that day.
Maybe next time, have good time all of you.
Mo :)
maccoinnich July 14th, 2006, 11:29 PM Bit difficult for me to justify, I'm afraid. I'll do it again sometime though.
Chief July 15th, 2006, 01:28 AM Priorly engaged here, I'm afraid. Ach well, your loss! :D
The Boy David July 20th, 2006, 07:06 PM Tayser I'm going to have to call it off aswell I'm afraid - I've been asked (told) to work Sunday overtime because my place of work is literally crumbling around me. I won't say who I work for other than it's a financial institution, and I had no idea a place could be so piss-poorly run when it's operation is so absolutely crucial...
So I can't make it I'm afraid, but I still think we should have a meet-up in August, if everyone is up for that?
Sorry again about that mate :(
solidred July 20th, 2006, 07:58 PM Argh... after sounding moderately keen I'm going to have to cry off this time too. I was fully intending to turn up until this afternoon when my dad called. Mum may be getting out of hospital and so I'm part of the 'welcome home' party...
August, as mentioned above, sounds fine so far.
By the way, is anyone planning on going to the RIBA confrence this year? I got the flyer on the same day as I received my bonus. I noticed it's in Venice and so... any excuse to visit the place.
Chief July 21st, 2006, 01:15 AM Either of the first 2 weekends of August should be fine with me... although, given the way the last couple of months have gone I wouldn't be surprised if that changes quickly.
crusty_bint April 25th, 2007, 11:05 PM Anyone going to Collective Architecture's launch party on Friday?
M_Riaz April 25th, 2007, 11:09 PM where is it being held ?
crusty_bint April 25th, 2007, 11:11 PM At their office in the Mercat Building... tap dancer ;)
M_Riaz April 25th, 2007, 11:17 PM Ye need an invitation or can anybudy go ?
crusty_bint April 25th, 2007, 11:31 PM I think its invite only, I (mysteriously) got one today, in a wee tube, with two ping pong balls... I thought someone was taking the piss

crusty_bint April 25th, 2007, 11:46 PM If you, or any of you want to go let me know, I'll RSVP tomorrow either way, Im positive they'll not mind a few extras, especially such leading lights as there are here ;)
M_Riaz April 26th, 2007, 12:13 AM Thanks Crusty i wouldnt mind going ...ive sent ye an email. :)
milton April 26th, 2007, 01:50 PM I think its invite only, I (mysteriously) got one today, in a wee tube, with two ping pong balls... I thought someone was taking the piss
Did you put them anywhere in, ahem, particular?
crusty_bint April 26th, 2007, 06:26 PM yeah... back in the wee tube, where else?
The Boy David April 26th, 2007, 06:54 PM Did you put them anywhere in, ahem, particular?
Helga Cannonfanny? Here? On this forum?
Milton! Talk about lowering the tone!
:)
maccoinnich September 25th, 2007, 03:38 PM Right, I've been more or less double-dared by another forumer to suggest that we do this again. Anyone feel like it? I now have geographic convenience on my side. Most of y'all already had that, and still do.
Also, I was just thinking, has The Boy David gone AWOL?
legslikeaspider September 25th, 2007, 03:46 PM Much like boards and crusty, I'm up for anything. What's it to be? Beer? Bounty bars (boards?!). Can we combine it with some Glasgow-related event so as we have something to talk about rather than stare awkwardly at each other like couples on a blind date?
The Boy started work, did he no? Although being at work never stopped me from posting :okay:
maccoinnich September 25th, 2007, 03:52 PM I think we should leave the bounty bars until we all know each other a little bit better...
Do you know any appropriate events on or anything?
Being at work never stopped me either, until they decided to block more or less every site on the internet (web forums, email, facebook, etc). My productivity did go way up mind.
legslikeaspider September 25th, 2007, 03:52 PM Ooh, a good old News of the World style name and shame.
Real name Iain

Macc,
Just seen this.
Is that a pair of pants hovering over your head?
Possibly flung by some young lady or fella, overcome with your poultry carving skills?
maccoinnich September 25th, 2007, 03:55 PM I shudder to think what kind of pants you are used to seeing... I think it was an extra large bag of crisps actually.
I did once send that photo to a fella, and amazingly he wasn't scared away.
legslikeaspider September 25th, 2007, 04:01 PM I just saw it and it made me smile. Still looks like pants to me though.
Perhaps we should name a date for starters. How about Sat 20th October?
maccoinnich September 25th, 2007, 06:22 PM Good for me.
....any other takers?
Chief September 25th, 2007, 09:19 PM Think I'm washing my hair that weekend. Sorry.
crusty_bint September 25th, 2007, 10:01 PM Think I'm washing my hair that weekend. Sorry.
Translation: you're all arseholes and I find it difficult enough to share an internet forum with you' let alone a pub.
I'm up for a drink, whenever suits me :)
The Boy David September 26th, 2007, 02:27 PM Hey guys sorry haven't gone AWOL, have just had an insanely busy September - been in Croatia and the US (Chicago = possibly the greatest city I've ever been to), just got back and the internet in me new flat is down.
It's taking me AGES to catch up on everything - this forum went through a pretty mad spell of activity while I was gone - great to see it so active!
Anyway, I'd be well up for another meet-up, but it's my uncle's 40th birthday meal/party/thing on the 20th October, so I'm afraid I won't be able to attend. I could do the 19th though, or the 21st.....

arse. 20th is no good for me now either. 19th ok though. What about you macc, crusty, (chief :tongue3:)? Anybody else interested - it would be good to have banter with a decent number of folks (unless y'all have bad halitosis)? don't be shy. Schemie? Mr B? Bounty boy Boards? Mo? Ye can't all be washing yer hair or shoving knitting needles up yer japseyes.
maccoinnich October 1st, 2007, 12:14 AM Talk about lowering the tone there legs. But anyway, aye, 19th is fine for me. Surely somebody else somewhere must fancy it? C'mon!
M_Riaz October 1st, 2007, 08:02 PM Sorry guys no can do for me that whole weekend...work & home comittments prevail.
Maybe the next time. :wink2:
Boards October 1st, 2007, 09:07 PM Ye can't all be washing yer hair or shoving knitting needles up yer japseyes.
No, dont need to worry on that score, got something shoved up my japseye a couple of weeks ago. I've never read through this thread properly but caught the odd post - have any of these meets ever actually taken place?
maccoinnich October 1st, 2007, 09:31 PM Aye - check page 5 for evidence. It was suggested that there should be a follow-up later that summer, but no-one could make it basically.
Boards October 2nd, 2007, 12:19 AM Oh jesus! You didn't warn me there was pictures;)
Boards October 2nd, 2007, 12:32 AM Also present was M_Riaz, who left earlier.
Those bail conditions are a bitch eh?;)
Chief October 2nd, 2007, 01:08 AM I'm actually in Glasgow on the 18th of October for an Arup graduate recruitment thing at Strathclyde Uni. I think it starts at about 5.30 and runs till 7-8 or so. Might be around after that for a wee while. Getting an early flight back down to London on the Friday though.
Incidentally, and I've no idea why I'm advertising this here, but I'll be up in Glasgow again on the 7th of November with a colleague of mine to deliver a lecture on climate change, the impact of the built environment and how we as engineers design green buildings. It'll run from 12.00-1.00 in the James Weir building on Montrose Street. It's part of a class for 4th year mechanical engineering students, but I'm sure if anyone wanted to attend I could arrange for it.

Well, the evening of the 18th is good for me and I'm sure we can find a suitable city centre location so as you could nip in and meet the rest of us for a bit.
I'd love to come to your lecture; it sounds really interesting, but I think I'm at a meeting in Manchester that day.
The Boy David October 2nd, 2007, 02:26 PM I can do the 18th - lecture also sounds fascinating (genuinely, considering I'm a big geek) but I've got classes on all day thursday so its a no go for me :(.
But evening of the 18th is grand :)
maccoinnich October 2nd, 2007, 03:05 PM Well I'm not one to spoil a party - the 18th is fine for me, even though I have a class at 9 the next morning.
I might be able to make the lecture. I reckon I could pass for a mech engineering student. If anybody talks to me, I'm sure I could bluff my way though a conversation about fan coil units.
legslikeaspider October 2nd, 2007, 03:25 PM Well, looks like its going to be the 18th then  :cheers2: :cheers1: :booze: .
The Boy or The Chief: does wan of youse want to suggest a suitable pub? Since I got hitched I hardly go drinking in town anymore, in fact I hardly go drinking period (I've no need to go on the pull but mainly because Mrs Legs wants me to spend my evenings looking at curtain fabric swatches and the like ), so all my old haunts have probably changed hands or been turned into luxury housing.
Chief October 2nd, 2007, 05:21 PM Eeek - don't arrange things around me! I'd literally be popping in for about 10 minutes or so. Am only up for one night so my Mammy wouldn't stand for me staying out with mates for too long! Also, I have no idea what time I'll actually be finished at the uni, or whether I'll be able to make it at all.
That said, if the 18th still suits everyone then that's cool. I don't actually drink, and usually avoid pubs as far as possible so amn't exactly the best person to ask. There is the Counting House on George Square (Wetherspoon's), or the Pheonix next door to Queen Street station. There's also that Europa place at Queen Street station.
I'm sure there are loads of other places near by that are also suitable.
Maccoinnich, 99% of the students there won't have a clue what a fan coil is so nae worries. instead, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics and structural integrity are the order of the day. But we always used to end talking about footy/TV/women/just taking the piss out of each other.
Chief October 2nd, 2007, 05:25 PM Also, just to be clear, I'm making two trips to Glasgow.
One is on Wednesday 18th October, which is just for an early evening graduate recruitment thing at the uni careers service. No 'lecture' as such'
The second trip is on Wednesday 7th November, which is when I'll be delivering the lecture along with a colleague of mine. Calling it a lecture makes it sound a bit grand, but I reckon it's a pretty good primer to green building design.
legslikeaspider October 2nd, 2007, 06:14 PM Chief, I kinda figured you wouldn't be into the demon drink, I hope if you can make it, you won't feel uncomfortable even entering a den of iniquity (I've met plenty of Muslims and also Christians who won't even darken the door of the pub). Anyway, any chance to breathe the same oxygen as you will be a bonus, even if its only for ten minutes :grouphug:
legslikeaspider October 16th, 2007, 12:25 PM Ok lads, I've just been reviewing the posts for this thread. Apparently we're meeting on Wed 18th October. However, the 18th October is this Thursday. D'oh! How did that happen?
Suggestions?
The Scotland game is on tomorrow night. If we are actually planning on having a conversation, then its not ideal. However, I am more than happy to share the pain and perhaps (oh please, Lord) unbridled joy with you guys, but maybe at times of national importance like this you would prefer to be with your real friends and family.
On the other hand, Thurs 18th is good with me and importantly, I have been given permission by Mrs Legs (who is concerned that I'm meeting a bunch of internet perverts, so y'all better be on best behaviour). If this date doesn't suit, then maybe we need to rearrange again?
maccoinnich October 16th, 2007, 12:38 PM We don't really seem to have that many takers actually, do we? But I'm still up for if others are.
However, it would have to be Thursday (which was in my mind, as that is the 18th), as I have prior drinking engagements on Wednesday.
And I'm no internet pervert.
Skyescraper October 16th, 2007, 02:40 PM Where are you planning? I might be able to make it for a bit.
legslikeaspider October 16th, 2007, 05:30 PM Where are you planning? I might be able to make it for a bit.
Somewhere on or near George Square so the Chief can pop in after his song and dance act at Strathclyde Uni (though he might not be able to make it). I was thinking of suggesting that bar, whose name escapes me, which is right on the corner of Cochrane Street and South Frederick Street at the South East Corner of George Square.
EDIT: Just done a bit of web-trawling and discovered that it's called 'The Edge'
Kentigern October 16th, 2007, 06:08 PM Have a camp, fruity, pink girl-drink in my honour guys. :)
Skyescraper October 16th, 2007, 06:16 PM Might be able to make it then legs, I have a gig at some point in the Merchant city but should be able to pop along either before or after. M
maccoinnich October 16th, 2007, 06:38 PM Have a camp, fruity, pink girl-drink in my honour guys. :)
Serious question - why do so few bars/pubs in Glasgow seem to have real ale? Is there no market for it here or something?
Kentigern October 16th, 2007, 07:00 PM Serious question - why do so few bars/pubs in Glasgow seem to have real ale? Is there no market for it here or something?
I hate to say it, but the beer/ale situation is far better in the US than it is in Glasgow.
The Boy David October 16th, 2007, 07:36 PM I hate to say it, but the beer/ale situation is far better in the US than it is in Glasgow.
I know - it's an incredible situation - every big city has their own crop of microbreweries that all churn out ales and lagers that are far, far superior to the trash that the Americans export over here. Thankfully if you look for it, you can pick up Sierra Nevada pale ale over here which IMO happens to be one of the better ales I've tried. Honker's 312 comes in a close 2nd, though.
The horseshoe bar is good for an ale, I reckons, as is the Beer Bar in Glasgow University Union, but other than that I don't know may good places to go for ale. Europa and the Beer Cafe have a great selection of beers, but I don't think they've got much in the ale variety.
I'd be up for a cheeky we drink on Thursday, and I can go anywhere so don't worry about the venue.
The edge is ok for a drink, but I normally drink further west so I haven't been there for a while now.
So can we get a quick tally of who can make it to this, and should we set a minimum amount of folks that say they'll go before we make it official? :)
Chief October 16th, 2007, 10:50 PM As stated previously, I may/may not be able to po in for a wee bit on the 18th - anywhere on or around George Square would be ideal for me.
maccoinnich October 17th, 2007, 12:28 AM So at the moment we have: my good self; TBD; legs; skye for a bit; Crusty seems keen, but hasn't committed to the date; Chief hopefully, briefly; and Boards seems to have at least flirted with the idea. Any others? Ah go on.
The Bon Accord near the Mitchell library has a good selection of real ales, and is a decent enough place, even if their name puts me in mind of all things Robbie Shepherd etc. However, and I know you guys will all spit at me for saying this, but in Edinburgh it seems pretty common for a regular non old-man pub to have at least one real ale on tap. This doesn't seem to be the case over here?
And yeah, given that the US is known over here for shitty lager, they actually have a lot of very good beers. My sister lives in Portland, Oregon, and it's a beer-lovers heaven. When I was in New York this summer, I was somewhat surprised to see how many pubs there had Old Speckled Hen on draught though. Who would have thought?

Well, I'm quite happy to move venue as the evening develops - I'm no real fan of the additive filled, vile, pishy lager that gets served in most pubs these days so if someone knows of somewhere that serves nicer stuff then I'm open for experimentation. All the same, I think we should stick about at the Edge for a bit because it will be easy for the chief to find - its not gonna kill us to have a pint in there while we wait for his appearance/non-appearance.
Kick off? 2000 ok?

6pm mate....
legslikeaspider October 17th, 2007, 01:38 PM ^^ mea no comprendes?
You talking about the footer tonight, having misinterpreted my 'kick off' choice of words? Or suggesting that we get the beers in from 6pm tomorrow?
Bingo Bango October 17th, 2007, 01:48 PM kick off for soccer is 6pm - sorry i thought thats what you were meaning....
im as shocked as you are
legslikeaspider October 17th, 2007, 01:54 PM :) no worries dude. I've got football on the brain at the moment, I sort of wish Scotland would hurry up and lose so I can concentrate on real life again. you should come join us - it'll be more fun than snogging a walrus.

Oh, no probably should just stick to one place, in case anybody who fancies coming along randomly makes an appearance. I was just making chat/observations.
Boards October 17th, 2007, 04:11 PM I'll not be making it as I'm currently in Engurland, shocking I know. Enjoys yourselves though.
The Boy David October 18th, 2007, 10:27 AM Right then chaps, 8pm at the edge - I'll look forward to seeing you all there!
maccoinnich October 18th, 2007, 12:35 PM yeah. I feel like death, but I'll be there
The Boy David October 18th, 2007, 01:46 PM yeah. I feel like death, but I'll be there
Ah join the club - I'm not feeling to well me-self, had a sore throat for about a week now, but no point letting that stop you, eh?
:)
Chief October 18th, 2007, 05:18 PM I'll do my very best to turn up, even if only for a bit.
maccoinnich October 18th, 2007, 05:47 PM Ah join the club - I'm not feeling to well me-self, had a sore throat for about a week now, but no point letting that stop you, eh?

Mine was slightly more self-inflicted.
The Boy David October 19th, 2007, 03:54 PM Well chaps it was a pleasure last night - most enjoyable!
I can't believe how rudely that guy forced us out of the bar, too - although quite impressive that we stayed til closing time!
Cheers everyone for coming (hope you got that home cooked meal you were after, Chief!) - we should definitely try this again sometime!
And Legs - I owe you a pint for the taxi!
crusty_bint October 20th, 2007, 06:02 PM Sorry I didn't make it to this folks (bet you were all gutted  ), how about another next month though?
Radiance is happening again this year, 23rd-25th November, under the umbrella, ella, ella, ella, ey, ey, ey... of the new 'Winterfest Glasgow', how about seeing some of this, perhaps on a tour, then a few jars in town? Or a few jars first, then a tour, then some more jars?
maccoinnich October 20th, 2007, 07:18 PM Well I enjoyed myself the other night, and would therefore be up for it again. Good chat, and it felt like being amongst people I know a lot better than I do.
Crusty - I think your suggestion sounds like a good one - although you'd better make it this time, mister! I should be free that weekend.
legslikeaspider October 20th, 2007, 08:27 PM In principle I'm up for this - would definitely be good to do something vaguely ssc related rather than simply going for a session.
And yes, Davey/Macc it was grand the other night - its always nice when someone offers to buy me a pint so I'll hold you both to that.
Crusty; looking forward to meeting you. I wonder if you're as rude in real life as you are on here.
Chief October 21st, 2007, 01:00 AM Alright guys - was great to see maccoinnich/Ian and David again, and a pleasure to meet legs/Jamie as well. Like last time, I was gutted I had to leave early, but momma's cooking was indeed calling!
Maccoinnich, I have to agree with what you said about how it felt like we knew each other better than we actually do - weird, eh?
gleegie October 21st, 2007, 05:47 AM I'll certainly be up for Radiance, I plan on being out every night it runs.
M_Riaz October 21st, 2007, 11:46 AM Aye good idea Crusty... i'd be up for radiance and a wee drinky poo afterwards, i'd definetely make time for this one. :)
crusty_bint October 23rd, 2007, 06:41 AM Nice one! Can't wait to see the program for Radiance, it promises to be better than the last one. Anywho. Friday 23/11 or Saturday 24/11 anyone? Was thinking we could try a pub crawl/lighting tour type thing, theres an installation on the Green aparrently so we could start at the microbrewery at Templetons and head into town from there. Or not, whatever, you know :)
Macc, mister man, I'll definitely be along! Looking forward to meeting you too legs, I wonder if you do actually have legs like a spider and several rows of vicious teeth? Gleegie, Mo, look forward to meeting you :)
legslikeaspider October 23rd, 2007, 03:10 PM totally unrelated, but is that you lurking in the back of your avatar, like a shy boy at the school disco, Crusty? I just noticed a face there, but maybe its an apparition and I should be calling up the vatican?
maccoinnich October 23rd, 2007, 03:23 PM Unless you've found Mother Teresa on your Kettle Chips, I wouldn't bother.
Microbrewery at Templetons sounds like an excellent idea. And he does have several rows of vicious teeth! It's quite scary.
crusty_bint October 23rd, 2007, 05:18 PM Yeah it is me actually! Well spotted Hercule ;) I was in Rome a couple of weeks ago actually and I tell you, I don't think the Vatican would bother about me ...its screamin oot them:banana::lol:
Anyway, stay on topic!
So how does your wife deal with these rows of teeth? Kiddin!, I'll draw a line under this tangent now.

Boards October 23rd, 2007, 06:23 PM  Never noticed that, why were you staring into Crusty's avatar? I looked and it hurt my eyes, you fiend Crusty.
Jamandell (d69) October 24th, 2007, 12:16 AM I don't think I shall be joining you until after I turn 18 I'm afraid...pubbing often leads to me being asked for ID
crusty_bint October 24th, 2007, 04:39 PM You can stand outside the pubs and hold my fags Jamandell.
When you back from the land of the engurs Boards?
Boards October 24th, 2007, 04:41 PM I'm looking for a place at the mo, just cant decide where. J you can hold my fags too - keep yer hands warm.
crusty_bint October 24th, 2007, 04:42 PM Cool, so will you be back in Glasgow for this?
legslikeaspider October 24th, 2007, 04:48 PM I don't think I shall be joining you until after I turn 18 I'm afraid...pubbing often leads to me being asked for ID
Bollocks to that. Come on the tour - it'll be brilliant going round the city with all these guys who have an encyclopaedic knowledge of Glasgow's history. In fact, come to the pub too - I don't imagine we'll be going to the sorts of places that ask for ID on the door. Go on, you know you want to. we'll show you a good time :naughty:

unless, of course, you look 12 years old ...if you do, legs is jailbait!
...or is it fodder...
legslikeaspider October 24th, 2007, 05:11 PM ^^
mmmmm...all that tender young flesh, effortlessly pierced by my rows of razor sharp teeth...
seriously though Jamandell, I've seen your pics in the skybar and I probably wouldn't ask you for ID. have no fear. We'll be nice to you (ok, maybe not boards)
maccoinnich October 24th, 2007, 06:00 PM By the way, can I just make a general point that to come along by no means do you have to be amongst the most frequent posters. Just because someone might have better things to do with their time than post on an internet forum all day long doesn't mean they wouldn't be welcome.
Kentigern October 24th, 2007, 06:42 PM I knew you loved me really. :)
Boards October 24th, 2007, 09:07 PM Don't let the photos of the last meet put you off either,

Hey! I've got contacts now - looks much better. Couldn't see anything out of those shaded specs at night.
I'm up for a tour and a pint - I agree with you legs that the next meet is better off being something to do with the city. Radiance is the perfect opportunity and I missed it two years ago so can't wait to see what they've got in store this time round.
I saw Jesus in the head of a pint one time - do I win a prize?
Kentigern October 25th, 2007, 02:42 AM I saw Jesus in the head of a pint one time - do I win a prize?
One months' meetings at the AA for free.
Chief October 25th, 2007, 11:01 AM I made sure I had a look round Radiance the first year it happened - it was awesome. Gutted I won't be there for it this year. Hope youse all have a good time.
deBuitléir October 31st, 2007, 01:45 AM Hello Lads,
sorry I've not posted much lately. I've not gone away, it was quite fun to lurk about reading your witty banter. Would be honoured if I could tag along to your next meeting , provided it's not when I'm in New York. Can't wait - it's been 10 years since I was last there - true skyscrapers here I come...
éamonn
PS: just realised I must be one of the most pathetic posters ever - I've been coming here over over 2 years and only made 35 posts - I hang my head in shame!
crusty_bint November 8th, 2007, 10:06 PM You're more than welcome deBuitléir!
So what night shall we make this, the Friday or Saturday? Would be good to firm at least the date up sose I (and the rest of you) can get on with other plans :)
M_Riaz November 8th, 2007, 10:25 PM Saturday would be good for me, i'll be working in the morn but would be willing to take a half shift for to meet up with ya all in the evenin.
Friday i dont finish untill 7pm and i'll be too nakerd to go anywhere.
Mo :)
maccoinnich November 8th, 2007, 11:46 PM Either is fine for me. Shall we say Saturday as that seems to suit Mo?
legslikeaspider November 9th, 2007, 11:05 AM Not so confident I can make this one, getting an exit pass on a weekend night is a tricky proposition. However, I'm happy to go with Saturday if that's what the wisdom of the crowd suggests.
crusty_bint November 9th, 2007, 03:35 PM Saturday is fine with me! Legs, bring the wife with you or buy her a box set (box of chocs, crate of wine, Desperate Housewifes DVD) and tell her to shurrit
maccoinnich November 9th, 2007, 03:38 PM Box of chocolates - £6.99
Bottle of wine (I'm sure his wife isn't a big enough lush to drink a whole crate?) - £4.99
Desperate Housewives box set - £34.99
Going out to the pub with people that you've never met, but interact with on the internet on a daily basis - priceless.
crusty_bint November 9th, 2007, 03:40 PM
The Boy David November 9th, 2007, 05:03 PM
Saturday is grand for me too. Looking forward to this actually, and for Radiance - I missed it last time so can't wait to see whats in store :)
deBuitléir November 10th, 2007, 02:01 PM Hey lads - not sure where you are meeting this evening! Hope it goes well - unfortunately I can't make it tonight as I have a prior commitment, but I will come along to the Radiance walk if that is still going ahead?
The Boy David November 10th, 2007, 04:31 PM Hey lads - not sure where you are meeting this evening! Hope it goes well - unfortunately I can't make it tonight as I have a prior commitment, but I will come along to the Radiance walk if that is still going ahead?
Hold on... I don't think we are meeting tonight - I thought that the next meet is going to be on the 24th November...
Am I wrong?
maccoinnich November 10th, 2007, 05:02 PM Yup 24th indeed. Two weeks notice - so no excuses from nobody!
deBuitléir November 10th, 2007, 05:07 PM Doh - sorry I'm a fool! :nuts:I will definitely come along on the 24th! Looking forward to it!

GLASGOW FESTIVAL OF LIGHT
MERCHANT CITY
23-25 NOVEMBER
Radiance, Glasgow’s biennial International Festival of Light returns to the city centre this year. To see buildings transformed by the installation of light, follow the trail through Glasgow Green, the Merchant City, the Commercial District, Strathclyde University Campus and High Street.

deBuitléir November 15th, 2007, 05:17 PM post moved to HERE (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?p=16517836#post16517836)
legslikeaspider November 18th, 2007, 11:29 PM Right then boys and girls, we need to set precise times and places for this event. Mrs Legslikeaspider would like to come so she needs plenty of notice to plan an outfit and makeup etc.. Crusty mentioned some microbrewery over by Glasgow Green is this the confirmed meeting point?. I'm gonna need addresses, times of arrival, temperature predictions, dress codes, precise locations of light installations... you get my drift.
maccoinnich November 18th, 2007, 11:35 PM The dress code is as below:
http://graphics8.nytimes.com/images/2006/01/01/realestate/01scapspan.jpg
You have to come as a planned tall building in Glasgow. I'm coming as Staybridge, but only because I have low self esteem.

:lol::lol:
very good.
how long have you been waiting for a chance to use that one? :wink2:
maccoinnich November 19th, 2007, 12:08 AM I remembered coming across the picture in Rem Koolhaas' Delirious New York. However, the illustration from that book which I would really like to use one day, if I can find a relevant use, is the illustration of 'eating oysters with boxing gloves, naked, on the nth floor' in the Downtown Athletics Club.
But seriously... I think we're settled on The West Brewing Company (http://www.list.co.uk/place/102786-west-brewing-company/) at Glasgow Green (I assume that's what Crusty was talking about). What time do people think would be good to meet at, to give a bit of time to chat/get a beer etc, before heading back out? Looking at the flier, a lot of the installations are only on until 9:30PM.
crusty_bint November 19th, 2007, 02:30 PM I'm just looking at the map >here< (http://www.winterfestglasgow.com/whatson/radiance/map.html) and noticed that the installation on the Green is only in Jocelyn Sq.... soooo.... Lets bag the micro-brewery and start off up at the Cathedral where the main event is.
We can meet at the Cathedral House Hotel which is a turreted little red sandstone building which was the former half-way house for Duke St Prison which stood where the Ladywell flats are.
Anywho, the Cathedral House Hotel is on the corner of Cathedral Sq and John Knox St
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v734/FoGN/mapcathhs.bmp
I'll leave the time up to you lot as Im easy.
Oh...
ps...
I bags Chryser!!
M_Riaz November 19th, 2007, 03:02 PM I'm up for it.
let's know the time to meet as i am bringing a freind along from Canada who wants to explore the city in all its glory.
crusty_bint November 19th, 2007, 03:07 PM Just looking more at the brochure - what the hells going on with the start and finish times?! Anywho, most things seem to switch on at 5pm with the latest finish at 10pm which leaves a very tight window to a) see them all and b) drink!
I'll maybe have something to eat in the Cathedral House before hand (if everyone is ok with the change of meeting place) , anyone else who fancies it is welcome to join me.
M_Riaz November 19th, 2007, 03:28 PM Why not everyone meet up in George Sq Crusty, at a suitable time and then move on to a bar/coffe/eating place of everyones voted choice.
Whatdya think ?
crusty_bint November 19th, 2007, 05:53 PM Sounds like a plan Mo!
Edit: Akshully... now that I think on it, it might be a better idea for us all to meet at the Cathedral House Hotel as
a) the 'hub' for the Radiance Festival is in the St Mungo Museum across the road, so we can get maps, freebies (ha!) etc
b) once we've seen whats going on at the Cathedral and Necropolis we can head into town and stay central
c) if we don't all start there there is a strong possibility that we wont (glug glug glug) make it up there later
maccoinnich November 22nd, 2007, 01:02 AM I'm fairly agnostic as to where we meet, but what time do we all think? People who've done this before might have a better idea of how long it takes to see a decent bit of it.
M_Riaz November 22nd, 2007, 01:34 AM O.........k then,what time @ the Cathedral House Hotel as macca asks?
The Boy David November 22nd, 2007, 01:35 AM Yeah same here. I'm up for meeting wherever - I might have already been fed by this point though (going back home to the dentist that morning; comes with complimentary dinner from parental units 1 & 2).
5pm is a good time - there's nothing to stop us having a couple of drinks, having a wander around the stuff, and then going for a few more afterwards.
One question Crusty - is this Cathedral hotel of yours a good place to booze? :)
crusty_bint November 22nd, 2007, 06:57 PM I'll be at the Cathedral House from around 5ish, the back of 5 maybe, and I'll be eating there in addition to a few pints so it really depends when you lot want to start?
I know the place sounds stuffy but thats just its name, its a braw wee boozer - and definitely a good enough place to start as any!
dae wotevver the fuk yeez whant!
 :)
legslikeaspider November 23rd, 2007, 05:58 PM I'm really looking forward to this; the Radiance thing is such a good idea and it also sounds like there's gonna be a decent crowd of us. We'll probably get to Cathedral House between 1730 and 1745, although we can't stick around long post-tour cos we're on party duty later on. See y'all tomorrow.
Skyescraper November 23rd, 2007, 07:31 PM Sounds like fun but unfortunately i'm not going to be able to make it... have to head to a Stag doo in Stornoway tomorrow night! I might not make it back alive but if I do, the scarring will be fairly evident!:D
The Boy David November 24th, 2007, 01:41 PM Well chaps (and chap-ets, Mrs Legs :)) looking forward to this tonight - hopefully the weather will hold and all that stuff - should be a banterful evening!
crusty_bint November 24th, 2007, 06:19 PM Aw well, pity Skyescraper, hope you have a goodun anyway :)
Looking forward to tonight too (am staaaarvin), hope to see a few of you out :)
For anyone unsure, this is what the Cathedral House looks like and this is its site: www.cathedralhousehotel.com

Great to meet you all again - (or for teh first time) - got to do somethi ng like this again soon!

M_Riaz November 25th, 2007, 12:37 PM Nice to meet you all...it was a really good wee tour we had a right good laff the whole lot of us... legsy + wife yer a riot mate ...crusty yer aff yer chump
My Canadian friend sam not pam crusty thought you were all very freindly and lovely mannerd thanks for making her welcome.
Cathedral/strathy uni/ john st were about the best displays, didnt think much of the rest i think its been downgraded from the pics i have seen of the 2005 radiance.
Boy david and maconich Oh and Sister blue nice meeting you too
Thanks all for making it a lovely night.:)
Gleegie /boards/ skye/chief/ maybe the next time matey's
deBuitléir November 25th, 2007, 02:12 PM Hi guys, although it was very brief, it was nice to meet some of you last night. I'm sorry that I wasn't able to stay with you all - I imagine that the banter was mighty. It was all rather last minute with my friends from London, I'm amazed that I even got them to go for a walk to see radiance. Speaking of which, I was rather disappointed - there was no doubt that the cathedral was a success, but the rest of the festival was rather a let down - even the giant light bulb! I reckon the first radiance was miles better. Anyway, going back to the meet-up, hopefully I will be able to join you all properly next time.
Cheers,
éamonn
maccoinnich November 25th, 2007, 02:26 PM Aye well I had a grand time, and just to echo what everybody else said, it was great to see those I've met before again, and lots of fun to meet people I hadn't spoken to before.
maccoinnich November 25th, 2007, 03:26 PM Most of my photos didn't turn out to be that great - using a really high ISO isn't really any substitute for a tripod. As I explained to Crusty, I couldn't really be bothered dragging a tripod around while in a group. That, and I don't have one.

legslikeaspider November 26th, 2007, 12:41 AM Great photos Macc, mine are hilariously bad, although Mrs Legs has said some very kind things about them being great pieces of abstract work. There should be some award for being the worst photographer on SSC.
It was great to see you all. Mo, you might be the nicest guy in Glasgow. Crusty, you're a lot of fun but you really are quite mad aren't you?
We enjoyed radiance on its own merits (not having been at the first one) and I hope that the commonwealth games budget won't put paid to future events like this. I think the Rottenrow garden worked the best but I also liked the noisy one at the city chambers.
Hope we can all hook up again soon. Anybody got any suggestions for a future activity?
Chief November 26th, 2007, 12:57 AM Great stuff - gutted I couldn'y join ye all. Radiance was great last time - shame it seems to have gone downhill a bit. Glad yes all enjoyed the night!
gweilo November 26th, 2007, 04:19 PM Glad to hear you guys had a good time. I managed to drag my partner around the lights on Friday evening and the Cathedral was amazing. Also really liked Rottenrow gardens and the starlights in the Livingston Tower were very effective (more towers should be lit like that!). The Great King Street / St Enoch east area was a bit of a let down this time around particularly the warehouse overlooking the carpark which had the most impact back then. The wee installation by Sam Clark was good but a bit lost (which I suppose was ok given that it was meant to be subliminal) but in that big space you really want maximum bang for your buck and its was a bit blink and you've missed it.
maccoinnich November 26th, 2007, 04:49 PM Can't help but feel that was a bit of a snub...
:)
