3. But much worse. I am an old (ish) married man with three children and weekends are pretty much constant taxi driving.

Hey guys sorry haven't gone AWOL, have just had an insanely busy September - been in Croatia and the US (Chicago = possibly the greatest city I've ever been to), just got back and the internet in me new flat is down.

It's taking me AGES to catch up on everything - this forum went through a pretty mad spell of activity while I was gone - great to see it so active!

Anyway, I'd be well up for another meet-up, but it's my uncle's 40th birthday meal/party/thing on the 20th October, so I'm afraid I won't be able to attend. I could do the 19th though, or the 21st.....

Incidentally, and I've no idea why I'm advertising this here, but I'll be up in Glasgow again on the 7th of November with a colleague of mine to deliver a lecture on climate change, the impact of the built environment and how we as engineers design green buildings. It'll run from 12.00-1.00 in the James Weir building on Montrose Street. Since I got hitched I hardly go drinking in town anymore, in fact I hardly go drinking period (I've no need to go on the pull but mainly because Mrs Legs wants me to spend my evenings looking at curtain fabric swatches and the like :cry:), so all my old haunts have probably changed hands or been turned into luxury housing.

Eeek - don't arrange things around me! I'd literally be popping in for about 10 minutes or so. Am only up for one night so my Mammy wouldn't stand for me staying out with mates for too long! Also, I have no idea what time I'll actually be finished at the uni, or whether I'll be able to make it at all.

That said, if the 18th still suits everyone then that's cool. I don't actually drink, and usually avoid pubs as far as possible so amn't exactly the best person to ask. There is the Counting House on George Square (Wetherspoon's), or the Pheonix next door to Queen Street station. There's also that Europa place at Queen Street station.

I'm sure there are loads of other places near by that are also suitable.

Maccoinnich, 99% of the students there won't have a clue what a fan coil is so nae worries. instead, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics and structural integrity are the order of the day. But we always used to end talking about footy/TV/women/just taking the piss out of each other.

Also, just to be clear, I'm making two trips to Glasgow.

One is on Wednesday 18th October, which is just for an early evening graduate recruitment thing at the uni careers service. No 'lecture' as such'

The second trip is on Wednesday 7th November, which is when I'll be delivering the lecture along with a colleague of mine. Calling it a lecture makes it sound a bit grand, but I reckon it's a pretty good primer to green building design.

The Scotland game is on tomorrow night. If we are actually planning on having a conversation, then its not ideal. However, I am more than happy to share the pain and perhaps (oh please, Lord) unbridled joy with you guys, but maybe at times of national importance like this you would prefer to be with your real friends and family.

I was thinking of suggesting that bar, whose name escapes me, which is right on the corner of Cochrane Street and South Frederick Street at the South East Corner of George Square.

I hate to say it, but the beer/ale situation is far better in the US than it is in Glasgow.

I know - it's an incredible situation - every big city has their own crop of microbreweries that all churn out ales and lagers that are far, far superior to the trash that the Americans export over here. Thankfully if you look for it, you can pick up Sierra Nevada pale ale over here which IMO happens to be one of the better ales I've tried. Honker's 312 comes in a close 2nd, though.

The horseshoe bar is good for an ale, I reckons, as is the Beer Bar in Glasgow University Union, but other than that I don't know may good places to go for ale. Europa and the Beer Cafe have a great selection of beers, but I don't think they've got much in the ale variety.

I'd be up for a cheeky we drink on Thursday, and I can go anywhere so don't worry about the venue.

The edge is ok for a drink, but I normally drink further west so I haven't been there for a while now.

Right then boys and girls, we need to set precise times and places for this event. Mrs Legslikeaspider would like to come so she needs plenty of notice to plan an outfit and makeup etc.. I remembered coming across the picture in Rem Koolhaas' Delirious New York. However, the illustration from that book which I would really like to use one day, if I can find a relevant use, is the illustration of 'eating oysters with boxing gloves, naked, on the nth floor' in the Downtown Athletics Club.

What time do people think would be good to meet at, to give a bit of time to chat/get a beer etc, before heading back out? Looking at the flier, a lot of the installations are only on until 9:30PM.

a) the 'hub' for the Radiance Festival is in the St Mungo Museum across the road, so we can get maps, freebies (ha!) etc

b) once we've seen whats going on at the Cathedral and Necropolis we can head into town and stay central

c) if we don't all start there there is a strong possibility that we wont (glug glug glug) make it up there later

Yeah same here. I'm up for meeting wherever - I might have already been fed by this point though (going back home to the dentist that morning; comes with complimentary dinner from parental units 1 & 2).

5pm is a good time - there's nothing to stop us having a couple of drinks, having a wander around the stuff, and then going for a few more afterwards.

One question Crusty - is this Cathedral hotel of yours a good place to booze? :)

I'll be at the Cathedral House from around 5ish, the back of 5 maybe, and I'll be eating there in addition to a few pints so it really depends when you lot want to start?

I know the place sounds stuffy but thats just its name, its a braw wee boozer - and definitely a good enough place to start as any!

I'm really looking forward to this; the Radiance thing is such a good idea and it also sounds like there's gonna be a decent crowd of us. We'll probably get to Cathedral House between 1730 and 1745, although we can't stick around long post-tour cos we're on party duty later on. See y'all tomorrow.

Cathedral/strathy uni/ john st were about the best displays, didnt think much of the rest i think its been downgraded from the pics i have seen of the 2005 radiance.

Hi guys, although it was very brief, it was nice to meet some of you last night. I'm sorry that I wasn't able to stay with you all - I imagine that the banter was mighty. It was all rather last minute with my friends from London, I'm amazed that I even got them to go for a walk to see radiance. Speaking of which, I was rather disappointed - there was no doubt that the cathedral was a success, but the rest of the festival was rather a let down - even the giant light bulb! I reckon the first radiance was miles better. Anyway, going back to the meet-up, hopefully I will be able to join you all properly next time.

Aye well I had a grand time, and just to echo what everybody else said, it was great to see those I've met before again, and lots of fun to meet people I hadn't spoken to before.

Most of my photos didn't turn out to be that great - using a really high ISO isn't really any substitute for a tripod. As I explained to Crusty, I couldn't really be bothered dragging a tripod around while in a group. That, and I don't have one.

Great photos Macc, mine are hilariously bad, although Mrs Legs has said some very kind things about them being great pieces of abstract work. There should be some award for being the worst photographer on SSC.

It was great to see you all. Mo, you might be the nicest guy in Glasgow. Crusty, you're a lot of fun but you really are quite mad aren't you?

We enjoyed radiance on its own merits (not having been at the first one) and I hope that the commonwealth games budget won't put paid to future events like this. I think the Rottenrow garden worked the best but I also liked the noisy one at the city chambers.

Hope we can all hook up again soon. Anybody got any suggestions for a future activity?

Great stuff - gutted I couldn'y join ye all. Radiance was great last time - shame it seems to have gone downhill a bit. Glad yes all enjoyed the night!

Glad to hear you guys had a good time. I managed to drag my partner around the lights on Friday evening and the Cathedral was amazing. Also really liked Rottenrow gardens and the starlights in the Livingston Tower were very effective (more towers should be lit like that!). The Great King Street / St Enoch east area was a bit of a let down this time around particularly the warehouse overlooking the carpark which had the most impact back then. The wee installation by Sam Clark was good but a bit lost (which I suppose was ok given that it was meant to be subliminal) but in that big space you really want maximum bang for your buck and its was a bit blink and you've missed it.

Can't help but feel that was a bit of a snub...
