cjfjapan February 25th, 2006, 01:37 AM I love the shots from the bluffs...a very photogenic city. Im surprised by the number of houses near downtown--cool little hoods.
My first memory of Dayton was when i was sixteen, I was visiting someone at the miami valley hospital. I went out to sit on the wall of the top floor of a parking garage that overlooked the city, and the hospital security came out to ask me if I was OK. Apparently, a nurse in the hospital had seen me, and thought I was going to jump to my death, six floors below. Nah, just enjoying the view.

yeah, you might recognize that these shots where from that very garage, and one next to it, over by Miami Valley Hospital, which is a real looming presence over the south side of the city.
Here is another pix...I sort of like this one....from up in Walnut Hills

Dayton had housing right up next to downtown but urban renewal took them out. The closest neighborhoods to the heart of dowtown are Oregon and McPhersontown...these in the pix are a bit further out than those

Aha, I wondered why it was Dayton skylines.
Those pictures from the garage are great; I haven't seen that view before! It's a little like the Woodland Cemetery view but with a better view of foreground houses.
ZachariahDaMan February 25th, 2006, 05:31 PM Awesome pictures, especially the first one!
Bonjourtoledo February 25th, 2006, 07:13 PM Great skyline snapshots! For the size of the city it sure has an attractive skyline.

Well said.
cwilson758 February 25th, 2006, 08:41 PM First, I had no ide Dayton was so hilly. Secondly, is the river navigable?
Jeff_in_Dayton February 26th, 2006, 02:48 AM another view

First, I had no ide Dayton was so hilly
It's hilly in a strange way. The city is in middle of a large basin or bowl, and the oldest parts of the city are fairly flat, except at some steep slopes at the edge of the river floodplain, which are somewhat distant from the river itself. These short bluffs where used in some cases for waterpower mill sites.
The land is flatter to the north, opening up to the Midwestern plains
So, in the middle of town its not evident one is in a valley.
The land slopes down to the river plain in these long slopes, not steep slopes like in Cincinnati. There are some steep areas south of town, but generally its these long downslopes so its sort of a strange rolling landscape, with occasional panoramic or long views opening up. The city is partly built on these hills too..the turn-of-the-century and 'teens/'twentys neighborhooods are built on the valley slopes.
I probably should post some pix of the hill areas and long views of the valley.
Secondly, is the river navigable?
No. It was used for flatboats and keelboats for seasonal trade to New Orleans in high water, but that was not reliable, so a canal was built to Cincinnati around 1828-29 (later extended to Toledo)
It was this canal trade that really caused the city to boom, as a trading collection//distribution point...though it was that during the keelboat days, too.
I guess this would be similar to Indianapolis and the White River..a fairly big or wide river, but not navigable.
Jeff_in_Dayton February 26th, 2006, 03:21 AM yet another view, from Grafton Hill

style515 February 26th, 2006, 03:35 AM Looks a lot like Des Moines actually.
Jeff_in_Dayton February 26th, 2006, 04:02 AM Yet another...sort of illustrating these long slopes down into the valley...

Jeff_in_Dayton February 26th, 2006, 04:41 AM There are some real good ones of the big fountain on the river at the first link.
Indyman February 26th, 2006, 03:38 PM I like Dayton but it looks depressing to me.
cwilson758 February 26th, 2006, 04:47 PM I have seen the fountain on the river before and I immediately thought, "Why doesn't Indy do someything like this with White River?"
ColDayMan February 26th, 2006, 10:38 PM I like Dayton but it looks depressing to me.
It's not depressing, unless you don't do anything in the city to begin with. It's like any other city; you can be bored in, say, Indianapolis if you don't do anything IN Indianapolis. If you are a boring person, then sure, it's a depressing city.
bangtoy February 26th, 2006, 10:54 PM I like Dayton but it looks depressing to me.
Says the guy from Fort Wayne.

LOL.
Kashmiri84 February 27th, 2006, 10:38 AM Dayton kind of makes me sad. Their downtown never has any pedestrian traffic whatsoever, and well, the metro area is a bit too spread out.
Jeff_in_Dayton February 27th, 2006, 12:39 PM Their downtown never has any pedestrian traffic whatsoever
That is an exaggeration. On weekdays during the working day there is traffic, from the various offices downtown and also the bus transfers.
On weekends during the day the place is pretty dead, but thats not unusual for most midsized citys around here.
Indyman March 4th, 2006, 02:05 AM ^^Even though it is sad Jeff is right about lack of pedestrian traffic in midsized cities. I can tell you Fort Wayne is in the same situation when it comes to foot traffic. But I'm not sure we have an OK amount but its not great. The Embassy theatre and some nice restaurants downtown help with that.
Indyman March 4th, 2006, 02:08 AM Says the guy from Fort Wayne.
Got me there. I actually hadnt even read your post when I posted my message above. Yeah even though Fort Wayne lacks some entartainment living here makes you not really know any difference until you visit a big city.
