storey from the BBC:

"Officers injured in Dublin riot

Several police officers and a journalist have been hurt during a republican riot in Dublin.

Disturbances broke out in O'Connell Street in the city centre, where a unionist rally to remember the victims of republican violence was to start.

Stones and fireworks were thrown after republican demonstrators mounted a counter-march. The loyalist rally was cancelled as a result of the trouble.

A number of protesters were also injured during the clashes.

The demonstrators said they would "not allow a loyalist march to pass".

Republicans have been throwing missiles at police in riot gear.

It is understood the counter-march was organised by Republican Sinn Fein - a political party which broke away from Sinn Fein in the 1980s.

Sinn Fein have maintained they are in no way involved in the violence.

Up to 1,000 people had been expected to take part in the Love Ulster rally to remember those affected by republican violence.

DUP and Ulster Unionist politicians were among those who had hoped to parade through the centre of the city, in a march organised by the victims group Fair.

A delegation was to meet the Republic's Justice Minister, Michael McDowell after the march.

Earlier this week, the Republic's Foreign Affairs Minister, Dermot Ahern, said the government had hoped the parade would pass off peacefully."

I'd hardly call it an 'anti-England manifestation'.......i'm sure there where provocations from both sides though.

I dont have pics, but from what i saw on Sky news it didnt look too bad......a few broken windows, a few small fires, apparantly some of the newly laid granite paving has been pulled up.

This was not a good day for an Englishman in Dublin. I was walking to college and there were burnt out cars, an overturned car and smashed windows. I live right in the centre of Dublin and was right in the middle of it all. Unfortunantly I have no digitial camera at the moment, I broke it a few weeks ago :(
Well it was all fairly exiting, but I didn't know what the hell was going on untill I met a freind, who did a sit down protest on O'Connel street earlier. They took pics on thier phones. I coudn't even get ciggarettes earlier, all the shops were closed dammit, I was going crazy! I think it's not such a good idea to go out on the piss tonight

Loyalist rallies in Dublin? How is this possible?

A few loyalist organisations wanted to march through Dublin centre, the government said OK, Sinn Fein asked people to ignore it, but the provocation was too much for some, and trouble started. The loyalist organisers knew exactly that something like this would happen, it was their aim, now they can go back North and say, see they hate us down there, we can never be united with the papists, etc, etc.

This loyalist march was like the nazis wanting to do a parade through Jerusalem.

It's freedom of expression surely? Why's it always different with Ireland? You get republican marches in the north as well as Liverpool, yet it's freedom of expression here. It should also be noted that there are unionist groups in both Dublin & Cork, so they were not all necessarily from the north.

^^ yes Gareth, Aussie Bhoy is fucking clueless. Excuse my French. Comparing loyalists with Nazi's is not appropiate at all.
Some of the unionists were locals. However, it is fairly undeniable that there was going to be some kind of backlash against a loyalist march in the centre of Dublin. However, everyone, including Sinn Fein, denounced the violence - it made a mockery of republicanism and handed the loyalists something more than the march would ever have acheived(which was cancelled). If the radical republicans had come up to me I would have said my Hail Marys and run for it! Two RTE reporters were attacked because they were considered 'Orange Bastards' :(

So where are these loyalists in the pictures? All I can see is nationalist thugs smashing up the capital city in their would be uptopian paradise of a whole of Ireland nation.

They're just scum. These "protestors" took the opportunity to loot sportswear shops during their rampage.
I wasn't at all keen on the idea of the march, which I believe was always intended to be a posturing opportunity for Donaldson, the DUP and the Orange Order rather than an opportunity for Willie Frazer to spread his message about the victims of Republican violence. However, there is nothing on Earth that would get me to support anything that any branch of Sinn Féin, or any rabble of IRA-chanting, Glasgow Celtic shirt-wearing scum do or say. They deserve the stocks.

I bet it must be hardwork selling bowler hats in Dublin on days like this.

Being serious again. Aussie Bhoy has a point in a way, I think the march may have proven to some in the Republic of Ireland that they won't want Northern Ireland to join them. Who would want this nonsense every saturday in their home city, especially one as nice as Dublin.
