4 Jalan Kubor redevelopment and restoration

One of the 4 bungalows within Kampong Glam, No. 4 Jalan Kubor is up for renovation.

The others are Istana Kampong Glam, Gedong Kuning (Rumah Bendahara) and Madrasah Alsagoff. All had been restored and turned into new developments.

This is No. 4:

Piling machines on site.
Metal retaining wall installed between bungalow and empty plot.

This is gonna be interesting... Let's see how they restore a wooden house. :)

That is amazing to watch a conservation in action, and to see what colours they apply and what uses they come up with :)

When I walked past the site a while back I thought they demolished a bungalow! But probably not...

Very exciting to see what will become of the old bungalow...

Extremely slow progress

Piling works had begun. It's only a few feet from the bungalow. :runaway:
Which is precarious, considering the bungalow is in a very bad state now.

Emits a stench...

Must be because of the rain....

Piling causes the ground to vibrate.... I think the house isnt as structurally strong as last time.

But why progress super slow... :(

maybe they need to stabilise the old house?

The post above is wrong about four bungalows in Kampong Glam:
There's one more at Jalan Sultan, which was apparently later (over 100 years ago!) incorporated into an row of tiny shophouses and thus one has to look quite closely to see that it actually once was a big, freestanding colonial three-storey bungalow.
It was auctioned off recently by URA.
Anybody knows the name and/or history of the place?

Also, the last Kampung house in Little India (wooden building on stilts at Rangoon Lane) has recently been cleared of its foreign worker inhabitants and is for sale (S$1.2M). I guess that means that it will be gone soon, right?

I am very interested in old buildings and conservation, just found this forum and will follow the discussions closely.

Greetings,
Frank

I was admiring this old house in Kampong Glam a few months back .... didn't realise there was already a thread for it.

One year later still nothing concrete built on the site next to the old house. It seems the construction might have been abandoned?

Possible... That would make it the third abandoned construction site in Singapore, to my knowledge.

I think I saw that recently. Is it painted in beige and boarded up together with the entire row?

I noticed it only because it was standing taller than the rest. I assumed it was an ambitious shophouse unit.

I'd like to take pics of those unconserved shophouses before theyre restored

... and take pictures!
The row of boarded up shophouses recently auctioned at Jalan Sultan -
the one with the hidden bungalow - is open from the back street. But
be careful: Some are in such a bad shape that floors may collapse if
you step on them. I didn't dare to go upstairs in the hidden bungalow
for that reason (it's in very bad shape)!
I wonder why URA always acquires such houses only to let them stand
empty and rot until it's almost too late, before they auction them off.
Is that conservation?!?
I would like to see pictures. I have a good eye for such things and love
old buildings that can tell stories, but I am not good at photographing.
Hyacinthus is great at that.
I'd be glad, though, to show you the things I discover.

Greetings,
Frank

Interesting... I should take a closer look from the back when I am in that area. Really hope URA would speed up the conservation and re-use of the many vacant shophouses in Kg Glam.

You know anything about the solitary old double-storey house near the Shell station along Lavender Street? It is for sale but I wonder about its history....

The house is gone, and the new block looks horrid!

Will the house be rebuilt?

Conserved buildings have to be rebuilt based on the conservation guidelines, eg Ee Hoe Hean Club.

Which is good in the event they are damaged by fire etc.

^^

Finally its progressed! I find the facade quite unique compared to other similar-styled bungalows of its era. The wooden veneer gives a 'Kampong' touch to it. I remember you said that you lived in the area. Any idea if that was how it looked in the past?

Too bad the old block looks horrible.

So it's going to be a Santa Hotel

Yes, it had a kampong style housing when I passed it when I was in primary school in the 1980's.

It was empty and dilapidated since the 1980's.

Santa Hotel? Never heard of them but from their website they do small scale projects. More such small-scale hotels would help bring some life to those dead and quiet streets. Such a picturesque area deserves more hotels.

@xtemujin

I think the style is really unique if thats the case. There is another abandoned mansion near Rangoon Road called Pin Guan Hotel...not sure if it's still there though.

Have you seen it before? I took that pic in 2005. But recently I did not see it when I was in the Farrer Park area.

Maybe it has been demolish?? Do you know how much will it cost to buy or rent this kind of building. It looks great for a small luxury hotel or restaurant.

I didnt see it when I was there just now. From google earth it's now a flat piece of land. Turn back the clock on the software and the old house can be seen from the satellite pics from 2004. :(

What a pity...although dilapidated and perhaps structurally unsound, it could have become quite a star in that area.

Anyway here is an overview of the restored/rebuilt bungalow, with the hotel extension beside it (blue roof).

After waiting for more then 20 years for these shophouses to be turned into a boutique hotel.

Some photos to share of Hotel Clover Singapore.
