View Full Version : PERTH - Perth Arena (15,500)
Citystyle March 1st, 2006, 06:28 AM The state government has released renders of this amazing new Stadium in perth. The design is amazing but has had alot of negative press. But it looks like it's all good. It's only 16,000 seats but thats all we really need for most concerts and events.
I hope channel 7 knock down the entertianment center and save perth from the blight it is on our city.
Pics of the proposed stadium and the old proposal.

The city of Perth is great, but this arena is really terrible. :( It's even doesn't look like an arena but like the modern theatre or something like that.
Quintana March 2nd, 2006, 09:19 PM I think it looks pretty cool
Durbsboi March 3rd, 2006, 10:26 AM WTF???? i think the designer was high on something
BobDaBuilder March 3rd, 2006, 04:38 PM Maybe the "artist" who came up with the "Yellow Peril" that sits in the park across the street from the Top of the Town knocking shop in Flinders St. Melbourne finally got his degree in architecture and the Perth City Council are giving the lad a break.
KiwiBrit March 3rd, 2006, 09:57 PM The thing that strikes me is, seeing the structure for the first time you would never know it was a sporting arena.
Is that a good thing or not?
highburysouljah March 4th, 2006, 12:07 AM whats sports is it for
BobDaBuilder March 4th, 2006, 02:10 AM ^^^^^^^^^^
Mainly concerts, union ralies etc.. Maybe one sporting event a year which is the Hopeless Cup in tennis.
NavyBlue March 4th, 2006, 07:56 AM lol . . . Rubik's Cube gone wrong???
Anyway I'll reserve my judgment until it's finished.

dunwyn March 25th, 2006, 08:43 AM reminds me a bit of the federation square architecture in Melbourne
Definitely. That was my first impression.
Perth nees more infrastructure (Adelaide as well). I hope this is just the start.
It least this design is not as bad as subiaco.
Perth, demolish subiaco and start again.
You need a bigger and better stadium.
Giorgio March 25th, 2006, 08:51 AM The deisng is awful. Reminds me of Fed Square, Melb.
pompeyfan March 26th, 2006, 05:50 AM brilliant. it manages to capture the eye
CF March 26th, 2006, 08:12 AM Yikes, it looks terrible. What was the designer thinking?
nOchAos March 26th, 2006, 08:47 AM I think it looks fantastic a welcome addition to Perth and a stunning piece of work. :applause:
samsonyuen March 26th, 2006, 10:06 AM Nice! I like Federation Square in Melbourne. I really like this design. What is there now?
dysan1 March 26th, 2006, 09:29 PM hmm....guess it definately is a love it or hate it one...how will it clash with the architecture nearby?
easysurfer March 27th, 2006, 02:51 AM It one of those awful nauseous designs that just makes you feel a little sick. Looks like the designer doesn't have a clue and just threw some random angles together to create a bit of a mess.
The_Hoops March 27th, 2006, 02:57 AM I like it. It is an arena with balls!
city_thing January 28th, 2007, 04:43 PM I wasn't sure whether this new arena that's currently under construction in Perth has been mentioned yet. It's being built on top of a series of railway tracks, a long with numerous new apartment buildings thereby allowing the Central Business District to move north more.
http://img247.imageshack.us/img247/3940/arena6km3.jpg
The arena will hold 12,000 people for sporting events, and 14,000 for concerts, not to mention a retractable roof and 40 corporate suites. The forecourt of the stadium will feature a massive screen, showing the events happening inside the arena (which will be the new host venue for the Hopman Cup).

The area from the tallest building at the left of this picture towards the new arena at the very right is currently MetroRail tracks. The entire area is to be sunk underground and replaced with new buildings, including the arena.
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a211/aussiehuskie/northbridge_image.jpg
However, in recent weeks, another option of relocating the arena to an area just east of the city has become an option, even though construction has already started. This option would allow for the arena to be built near a new stadium that the government wants to build. These are preliminary designs:
http://img342.imageshack.us/img342/663/burswoodplanaerial2pd6.jpg
http://img340.imageshack.us/img340/5219/burswoodplanground2xv9.jpg
This new "Sporting Precinct", if approved, would be beside these areas that have already been ear-marked for appartments and entertainment districts. Construction of many of these buildings has already commenced.

So, rhetorically, where would you rather put the new Arena? In the CBD, or on Burswood Peninsular which is already going through a massive amount of development?
(one more thing, this was the original design, THANK GOD IT WAS REJECTED!)

28/05/07
Western Australian construction company BGC has won the contract to build the iconic world-class Perth Arena.
Announcing the successful tenderer today, Housing and Works Minister Michelle Roberts said the decision was reached following a thorough selection process.
“BGC will bring to the project a track record of excellence and value for money in construction, having undertaken many projects for the State Government,” Mrs Roberts said.
“The State Government is providing a world class entertainment facility that will house a range of sporting, musical and cultural events.
“WA will soon be in a position to host any act, any artist, any show, like never before.”
The Minister also announced today a new design for the Perth Arena carpark that would see it located underneath the complex.
“The carpark will have a capacity to at least equal the 680 bays of the original design, which was to be built adjacent to Perth Arena, over the Perth-Fremantle railway line,” Mrs Roberts said.
“Once Perth Arena is in use, the traffic flow in and out of the complex will be the same when the Perth Arena site was an open-air carpark.”
The Minister said there would be no change to the seating capacity of Perth Arena, or to the scope of the construction of the complex.
“Perth Arena will provide a minimum of 12,000 seats for sporting events and up to 14,000 for concerts, as well as in excess of 500 corporate seats, an upmarket club lounge and an operable roof. This ensures that Western Australia will attract world-class performers and international sporting events,” she said.
“This building will represent the ‘cutting edge’ in arena architecture, while retaining the iconic look and design of the original.”
Mrs Roberts said successful negotiations between the State Government and BGC had resulted in the Perth Arena and underground carpark complex costing $335million.
“The successful carpark design represents the most economical option for Government without compromising the iconic Perth Arena and forecourt, as well as providing maximum carpark capacity,” the Minister said.
“While we are working towards a completion date in late 2009, the reality of the construction market means we are taking contingency steps to prepare for a later completion date of early 2010.
“EventsCorp are negotiating with Burswood regarding the staging of the 2009-10 Hopman Cup at the Burswood Dome.”
Mrs Roberts said Perth Arena was a major part of the State Government’s ‘Building WA’ record capital works program, with benefits to flow from these projects to the people of Western Australia for years to come.
“Last week I joined the Minister for Health in announcing the successful architect for the $1.1billion Fiona Stanley Hospital.
“The State Government is making decisions for the future with a capital works program valued in excess of $3.5billion in the 2007-08 financial year,” Mrs Roberts said.
BGC wins contract for Perth's new entertainment complex
Monday, 28 May 2007. 13:46 (AWST)
The construction company BGC has won the tender to build Perth's major new entertainment venue.
The Minister for Housing and Works, Michelle Roberts, says Perth Arena will be built alongside the existing Entertainment Centre.
It will have up to 14 thousand seats and host a range of sporting, musical and cultural events.
Mrs Roberts says the 335-million dollar complex will include an underground car park for 680 vehicles and should be completed by 2010.
Cost blowout and possible delay on new arena
28th May 2007, 15:15 WST
The cost of Perth’s new indoor stadium has blown out by another $15 million it was revealed today, bringing the cost of the project to $335 million.
The revelation came as the State Government finally confirmed that BGC would build the Perth Arena indoor stadium, almost a month after The West Australian revealed the Len Buckeridge company had been appointed the preferred tenderer.
Housing and Works Minister Michelle Roberts also said today that it was uncertain if the new arena would be finished in time to host the 2010 Hopman Cup.
Ms Roberts left today's regional Cabinet meeting in Pinjarra early to make the announcement at the Wellington St site of the new multi-purpose indoor venue, which will be the new home for the Perth-based tennis tournament and will also host concerts and other indoor sports.
"BGC will bring to the project a track record of excellence and value for money in construction, having undertaken many projects for the State Government," Mrs Roberts said.
"The State Government is providing a world class entertainment facility that will house a range of sporting, musical and cultural events.
"WA will soon be in a position to host any act, any artist, any show, like never before."
The Minister also announced today a new design for the Perth Arena carpark that would see it located underneath the complex.
The Perth Arena announcement comes as the State Government comes under pressure to commit to a new 60,000-seat outdoor stadium, after John Langoulant's stadium task force identified Subiaco's Kitchener Park and East Perth as the preferred options last week.
The losing bidder for the Perth Arena contract was the Janet Holmes a Court-chaired John Holland, which was blamed by Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan last week for the latest delays on the $1.61 billion Perth to Mandurah rail line.

El Vampiro Ucraniano May 28th, 2007, 03:33 PM Stadium has to remain a stadium, it has character, however I think that the design is a little ugly, although it should be judged only when it's finished.
Calvin W May 29th, 2007, 01:49 AM A general contractor has been picked for the construction project BCG. So hopefully it will start soon. The government is calling for a late 2009 finish but have said delays may push that back to 2010.
Stay tuned.
Melbnovo May 29th, 2007, 05:01 AM Another "love it or loathe it" development in australia, just like Federation square. I personally loathe it!! I could imagine Kath and Kim standing out the front going, "It's noice, it's different, it's unusual". Sometimes less is more, and in this case the design seems overworked to make it look unique....well, it certainly is unique, but in a bad way. I think I prefer Fed square to this and that is saying something!
In 10 years time people will look back on it and think it is an out of date eyesore.
Ari Gold May 29th, 2007, 06:02 PM What!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You guys shitting me? Perth hasnt seen anything as arthitecually different as this. In order to shake off our dullsville tag, we need more of this.
"Less is sometimes more"
We have been going through that since federation. We need to change. We need to implement things that are stunning and different. This is certainly one of them and it gets people talking. Its great and will do wonders for that part of the city. Which is pretty much nothing right now.
Gecko1989 May 30th, 2007, 12:30 AM why have such a nice stadium and then such ugly seats. It looks like the future on the outside and the 80's on the inside lol.

vjzoo June 1st, 2007, 03:41 PM I think it's a bit contrived and will date quickly rather than becoming an icon. It's so Postmodernism 2000. But still, it will be a huge asset to the state so I'm thrilled to bits it's happening and look forward to attending events there in a couple of years.
You can see a 3D walk-past (not a walk-thru of the Stadium itself, meant to showcase the adjacent developments) with much nicer renders at http://lastpixel.com.au/showreel_stream_william.html .
I wonder about the apartment buildings so near to the stadium. Perth is known for people moving in next to a live music venue and then complaining about the noise (duh!). I remember when Luna Park in Syd got closed because of noise complaints from residents in new apartments who said the people screamed too loud on the rollercoaster - which had been there for decades longer than their apartments. I reckon people shouldn't have the right to complain if they move in next to an obviously noisy venue.
city_thing June 1st, 2007, 03:46 PM ^^ Perth is horribly famous for that. I remember when Hudson Bar was closed for that reason.
But the Government is in love with this project, and they can be very stubborn (remember the debate over the SSR?) so I think they won't pay any attention to what the people say.
And regarding the Northbridge Link (of which the arena is a part of) has a good video here:

I can't believe how much development is planned for this city.
All you SSC users will love this video.
BrizzyChris June 5th, 2007, 03:10 PM One of the worst designed buildings I have ever seen proposed for Australia. I've hated the look of this thing from the very beginning. I think it's a real shame for Perth, because they could have got something truly great for such a prominent site.
El Vampiro Ucraniano June 5th, 2007, 03:28 PM I think it's cool to build a high standard arena for tenis, however i believe that the design should be changed! Everything from the exterior to the seat colours.
isaidso June 5th, 2007, 03:30 PM Definitely not boring. This arena has the potential to be a disaster or stunning. There aren't enough renders to fairly weigh in on this. Detail, materials, quality, and design alterations are all crucial. The concept isn't the issue for me, but some of the facade is. The facade seems overly busy and garish.
The recently built ROM Crystal addition in Toronto might be a good project to compare this to. The ROM got it right and has bestowed on Toronto an iconic building that has elevated the neighbourhood to that elusive glamourous modern standard that cities try to attain. It's absolutely gorgeous. How can you compare the two? Night and day differences in form and fuctionality. Modern topping of an old building in Toronto. Where as Perth will be starting from empty space and will not have to marry to styles and structures together.

dallas June 8th, 2007, 12:57 PM I wonder how many people would be complaining about it if it was taking place in their own city. Personally I agree with the guy from Toronto, it could go wither way, but based on the renders I think it looks great and contributes to a city the way it should, i.e. it should stand out and be different, cities shouldn't be uniform in appearance and design.
isaidso June 12th, 2007, 05:17 PM Agreed, there's too more uniformity in many parts of the world already. It's a pleasant surprise to come across a break from that. The Australian parliament is a good example. Instead of building a traditional structure, something unique and unconventional was built. Some people don't like it, but you certainly remember it.
I happen to think it's beautiful and a very fitting building for Canberra. This arena in Perth is for sports, not government, but there's zero reason it can't accomplish a similar result, but on a smaller scale.

Walbanger June 14th, 2007, 08:19 AM Just really looking forward to seeing the Perth Wildcats back in the CBD where they belong. The old entertainment centre had a great basketball atmosphere, that along with the central location must have been strong reasons why the Wildcats keeped pulling 7000+ while the other teams (not Townsville and Adelaide) fell in attendances during the late 90's. I'm extremely confident that the Cats will get the crowds again once they leave the half sized dump in the burbs that they were banished to when the old Centre closed because of its financial mess.

BrizzyChris March 16th, 2008, 05:59 PM God it's disgusting. It's so weird that Perth is getting this horrible thing, yet also getting arguably the best looking stadium in the country (that new 60,000 seat one).
Joop20 March 16th, 2008, 06:12 PM Let's hope this is one of those designs that looks much better in reality than on the renderings. It looks kind of incoherent to me... and what are those red/white sticks doing there? What will the cladding be made of btw?
dallastexjr March 18th, 2008, 03:27 PM I love the design - it's certainly better looking than Federation Square in Melbourne, which received so many (undeserved imo) accolades. Perthites don't have the luxury of bagging this design - it's by far the most interesting thing we have after decades of dull, boxy buildings. Hopefully things are changing here though.

‘Debt-free’ Perth Arena reaches major milestone
Sat 26 July, 2008
Premier Alan Carpenter has used the first concrete pour of the $335million Perth Arena to announce the project will be delivered debt-free to Western Australians.
The Premier and Housing and Works Minister Michelle Roberts today inspected works at the Perth Arena site.
“Construction of a specialised entertainment and indoor sports venue with a 680-bay car park underneath is a complex exercise, but works on the Perth Arena site are progressing well,” Mr Carpenter said.
“The work starting today involves construction of the below-ground car park, and today’s concrete pour is the first of 24 to take place over the coming months.
“Based on our preliminary understanding of the results for the 2007-08 financial year, we will be allocating to a special purpose account funds, to enable the debt-free construction of the Perth Arena.
“We have already used cash surpluses to ensure the New MetroRail project and the Fiona Stanley Hospital have been and will be delivered debt-free.
“This is an example of ensuring the benefits of today’s economic boom will leave an important and economically responsible legacy for future generations.”
Today’s concrete pour used around 400 cubic metres of concrete, delivered by some 80 concrete trucks that operated for several hours non-stop from 7am.
At the same time, the structural steelwork for the arena is under way off site, including the fabrication of the two large ‘megatrusses’ for the arena’s retractable roof.
Mrs Roberts said Perth Arena would provide a minimum of 12,000 seats for sporting events and up to 14,000 for concerts.
The arena would feature more than 500 corporate seats, an upmarket club lounge and a retractable roof. Completion was anticipated in 2010.
The Minister said the world-class facility would help WA secure international large-scale rock concerts, orchestral performances, opera, indoor moto-cross, basketball and netball.
“Perth Arena will ensure WA attracts world-class performers and international sporting events,” she said.
“It will also be the new, quality home of the Hopman Cup.
“Perth Arena has been designed with a great deal of input from the special events industry to ensure major events can be set up and dismantled quickly and efficiently.
“Over the past two years, some of Australia’s leading concert promoters have been briefed on the Perth Arena project and they’re very impressed by what they’ve seen and are looking forward to staging events here.”
The Premier also today announced that The WA Sports Centre Trust, as the Government owner of the facility, would shortly begin a tender process to appoint an operator to manage Perth Arena, subject to a satisfactory commercial arrangement.
“We expect the process to take place over the next six months and to be able to appoint an appropriately-skilled manager as early as possible,” he said.
“This will allow the operator to begin the exciting start-up process, including securing world-class acts for the whole community to enjoy upon opening.
“To ensure Perth Arena operates to its fullest potential, it will be critical to have the best management structure in place.
“The State Government is building better infrastructure to service the future needs of all Western Australians.”

$110m Arena blowout
17th December 2008, 6:00 WST
Contractor BGC is expected to demand about $110 million in cost overruns on the Arena indoor stadium next week, taking the total cost of the project to about $425 million.
Sources say BGC will demand the extra money over unexpected costs partly because of engineering difficulties with the underground carpark, and it will also change the estimated completion date from late 2010 to May 2011.
Office of Strategic Projects executive director Richard Mann confirmed the contractor had told his office of major cost overruns “very cagily, without being precise” but had yet to confirm a price.
He said he could not confirm the figure of $110 million until the written claim was submitted to the Department of Housing and Works, which is expected to be next week. He confirmed the contractor had informed the Government recently of a time delay “well into 2011”, which would mean the Arena would not be available to host the Hopman Cup in 2011 as planned.
But he said the Government still believed it would be possible to finish the project by late 2010. There were negotiations for a different venue to stage the event in 2011 if it was not.
Spokesmen for both Burswood Resort and the Hopman Cup tournament said they had not had notification of the potential change in plans and were not expecting to host the tennis event at Burswood in 2011.
“We will turn contingency into reality,” Mr Mann said.
He said the Government would negotiate to find out how much of the blowout the contractor would pay and how much taxpayers would cover.
BGC declined to comment.

But it sure has a lovely crazy design. And I bet it'll be quite imressive to look at in reality, once it's finished. Those type of sculptural buildings usually look much better when you walk around inside or in front of them.

it's only been under construction since May last year so hardly 3 years. and the fact that it has been on site works up until now is because there was a redesign, so the carpark was put underground, ofcourse this was after they had already done the site works, which therefore meant the construction crew had to redo it and move one gas pipe which they had already moved according to the original plan, this is what basically double the time for the ground works.
as for the cost that is because there is a labour shortage in perth for the past 3 years meaning all building companies are charging a lot more than what things actually cost to build so they can get the required labour, which is where the budget blow out is coming from, but with the recent economic crash and an ending to a lot of projects hopefully it means construction cost will stagnate if not come down.

with the economic crunch where will they justify AU$100m? i am sure this must be causing a bit of outrage in the city surely? and probably already been asked, but why is the city or state paying for the venue? will they be leasing it out?
BobDaBuilder January 2nd, 2009, 12:43 AM Not surprised of cost blowouts. They have BIG problems in W.A. because of lack of qualified workers. And the ones they have are over paid.

about 8 years ago the state government seeked private developers to build and own a new indoor arena after the previous two had either closed or threatened to be closed for redevelopment, these were the Perth Entertainment Centre which has now been closed for 10 years and also the Burswood Dome, which is only be left opened until the new Perth Arena is built, at which point it will be developed.
the state government promised to give $50m to the project, but after 5 years or so the state government change tact and decided to build the arena themselves. at which point we know have the Perth Arena being proposed which would be fully owned by the state government but run by it's stadium organisation. this meant they would pay for the whole stadium themselves.
because of recent projects such as the Mandurah Rail-line which had cost blowouts of 50% as well as most private developments such as BHP and Rio Tinto mines facing similar problems, people in the state have come to expect such blow outs to occur.
i hope that helps.

mossimoh June 15th, 2009, 09:00 PM The city of Perth is great, but this arena is really terrible. :( It's even doesn't look like an arena but like the modern theatre or something like that.
Where is Native City? interesting name...is it near Raccoon City?
docker June 17th, 2009, 03:04 PM a bit of inside info on how it will be built.
The single lift core is upto level 5, ie 24.3m above ground level. It will lift a further floor to level 6, which is 28.625 above ground level, then continue to top out about 4m above that. The multipal lift core terminates at level 5.
Works are progressing on site, and you will see more once the mega trusses arrive. There are two trusses, which go to each side of the operable roof area.
To put it into perspective, each truss (there's two of them) will be 132.350m long x 10.480m high and 2.35m wide. They will be constructed at ground floor level, and lifted into position with 4 jacking towers, each to a height of 23.135m above ground level to underside. Once both trusses are in the air, they will be connected to 4 Mega columns (2 per turss) The roof will then be constructed at the same time as the arena is constructed from ground level. The whole roof is supported from the trusses, including the wall that surrounds the bowl of the arena. Not the external walls, they are supported from ground bearing steel frames.
As you will no doubt guess, it's a very accurate procedure, as there is only a 20mm vertical tolerance, once the two structures meet. So please be patient, and all will become apparent soon. In the mean time, level 1 South is currently under construction.
The North truss is complete at the steel yard, the southern truss is under construction, and all the mega trusses are complete too. The South truss will be the first to be lifted into position.
The trusses are broken into managable sizes and bolted together on site. But they will have to be delivered to site out of normal working hours, as the small bits are still too large to transport on the public roads with out police escorts.
I hope all that gives you a bit of relief that things are happening. Albeit, mostly off site at the moment.
If you have any questions, please ask. Although I can only answer questions on construction, nothing involving money or politics.
cheers
NTP.

Weebie January 25th, 2010, 02:17 PM THey have been building thsi thign for 2 years now. Wy is it takign so long? Unions?
BartBart January 29th, 2010, 01:32 PM ^^ There was going to be an above ground carpark. After the earthworks (site remediation, etc) and large services (sewer and drainage) were re-directed around the building footprint (which is only about half the site), the carpark was then changed to be under the building. The carpark takes up the full site (680 bays). So the services had to be redirected again and the earthworking had to be redone to a greater depth than it was before.

anaiptol April 21st, 2010, 02:23 PM Why do you need a retractable roof for an arena?
BartBart April 21st, 2010, 04:37 PM ^^One of the reasons Perth Arena is being built is to replace the Burswood Dome (next suburb to the east from East Perth). Early Jan it hosts the Hopman Cup - a country v country tennis comp comprising of a man and a woman, that gets in big name and decent players competing due to it being a lead in competition to the Australian Open. To get these names in the comp guarantees at least 3 matches at a decent level in a round robin format. Because it is a lead in competition the players want the same/similar conditions to the Aus Open - which includes being able to play it with an open/closed roof.
Burswood Dome will be demolished once Perth Arena is up and running. Having an operable roof will make the venue more flexible in events it can cater for - though I am not sure under what circumstances (besides the Hopman Cup) would events operate with the roof open.
Calvin W April 24th, 2010, 10:00 AM My two cents, Way over budget and under sized!
Should have used the money for a decent footy stadium!

I thought the idea was to replace the Perth Entertainment Centre, as the Perth Arena is being built in the adjacent car park of the Perth Entertainment Centre.

it just happens to be next door, a bit of a coincidence, but it will also be replacing the Perth Entertainment Centre, as that venue could also stage basketball and other events as well as staged performances, so the Perth Arena is replacing two delapitated venues...
but anyway's, i took these today
i must also state, that i am unaware as to how, some of these photos mysteriously appeared on my camera when i got home... considering they are taken in areas or restricted access

VZJoseph January 7th, 2011, 05:32 PM If you downloaded the Microsoft Office Enterprise 2007 (http://www.microsoftoffice2007key.com/) Office system Beta 2 Technical Refresh you may have noticed that all the Office splash screens and icons are now more slick looking and different. They area partially-rounded box shape, as seen in the Microsoft Office Professional 2007 Keygen (http://www.microsoftoffice2007keygen.com/) here, and I think it adds a little something to the look and feel of Microsoft Office 2007 Professional (http://www.microsoftoffice2007productkey.com/). Of course this isn't by any means a big new feature, but I am always interested in little UI tweaks that Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2010 Key (http://www.microsoftoffice2010.us.com/) draw the user a bit more toward a product based on the look, which the new icons in Office 2010 Professional Plus (http://www.microsoftoffice2010key.com/) does.

Calvin W February 6th, 2011, 06:32 AM Come back next year folks to see some actual progress. Perth takes forever to build anything but this arena will go on forever and a day!
What, this thing was suppossed to be finished 2 years ago wasn't it?
Walbanger February 6th, 2011, 08:54 AM ^^ Yes it was supposed to be finished two years ago.
The delays were caused by awarding the project to BGC whom have found to be a little out of their depth with the complex design, which has been likened to a squashed beer can. A general lack of labourers in Western Australia as a large number have jumped ship to work and earn very good money in the mining boom north of Perth. Most importantly the last minute inclusion of an underground carpark add two years to the project because of design revisions plus engineering and environmental challenges of the site which was once a lake bed then filled with 100 years worth of pollutants. Every bit of earth removed had to be tested and treated before going to land fill and all the ground water treated and pumped back into the immediate aquifer.

fozzy February 13th, 2011, 02:00 AM Not too sure on the cladding!!!!! "Not a great fan of corrigated iron" lol but i do quite like the shape!!!
Walbanger February 13th, 2011, 06:02 AM ^^Thats the internal cladding because the exterior cladding is not water tight. The outside will be clad with these triangles.
http://img200.imageshack.us/img200/541/pertharena.jpg
BartBart February 13th, 2011, 12:55 PM I suspect it is also to act as a noise filter having the gap between the external cladding and the already installed covering.
The below gives an idea of where the cladding is at on the Elements shown in my pics. The metal at the bottom needs to be attached and then the cladding onto that as per my photo above.
The BGC brickworks site that Jarkti photographed a few months ago. A lot of concrete and metal parts laying around and the below. No cladding attached to the sample piece though. It looks like (by the lower part) that metal will be attached to the outside and then the cladding will be attached to that.

Bori427 June 1st, 2011, 07:08 AM Horrible design for an arena imo...
spiralout June 1st, 2011, 08:28 AM facinating design!
BartBart June 1st, 2011, 04:58 PM Once the cladding is one and LED lighting around the outside of the various external elements, it will look good.
Walbanger June 1st, 2011, 07:35 PM I'm indifferent to the design but I'm proud that it was chosen considering how much of a conservative, miserable bunch the Western Australian Government and older generation tent to be. Nanny State NIMBY Capital.

So the aluminium (silver and other colours) is definitely not the final cladding. The wood is the first part of the roof in that section.
eg.

BartBart September 13th, 2011, 06:06 PM btw - supposedly the coloured aluminium is to reduce the glare affecting the passing freeway traffic before it is covered with the outer cladding.

Makes a lot of sense and amazed I didn't realise it myself earlier
Bori427 September 25th, 2011, 04:10 AM Wow, looks horrible imo...
BartBart September 25th, 2011, 02:43 PM Three pics of the changed cladding. Looks like more has been installed on the south Element. And some of the blue cladding in the vicinity of the Trojan Horse Element (above the entry) -although I am not 100% if that is final cladding.

South-west - note for those looking at this thread for the first time the coloured aluminium is NOT (I repeat NOT) the final cladding. It is coloured to stop reflections blinding the Freeway traffic.

Mr.Underground October 16th, 2011, 12:20 PM When is the opening planned?
BartBart October 16th, 2011, 12:49 PM Around July-ish next year. But BGC (the company doing the building) is notoriously slow - so maybe later than that.

Ok, a year to go.
What will be used for? Basketball arena or other pursues?
Cheers from the other part of the world.
BartBart October 16th, 2011, 01:35 PM Primarily concerts (varying sizes because curtains can be used to configure the stadium in quarter, half and full concert modes).
But yeah, basketball (The Perth Wildcats from the NBL) is likely to be at Perth Arena. The Hopman Cup (mixed gender tennis tournament in the lead up to the Australian Open) will be hosted at the Superdome in Burswood for one more year then at PA.
Things like motorcross events (like Krusty Demons) could be hosted.

b5254 October 16th, 2011, 08:26 PM Not too sure on the cladding!!!!! "Not a great fan of corrigated iron" lol but i do quite like the shape!!!
I agree with you. I like the shapes and all, but the cladding is a little too simple.
Edit: Hm, so this corrigated iron is just an inner cladding...?

Correct - that is only inner cladding.
BartBart October 23rd, 2011, 10:05 AM Southern Element has the lift thing removed and the protection peeled off.

A I perth October 25th, 2011, 06:18 AM why they would put that candy stick thing up before the final cladding thats in the other pics
It looks like its going to be way harder to fill up the hole thats behind it...
sandstorm6299 October 25th, 2011, 03:26 PM I'm guessing the pole is attached to the internal structure rather than just being pinned to the outer cladding? Don't quote me, I'm just guessing.
BartBart October 26th, 2011, 02:28 PM I too thought it was strange for the candy cane pole to go up before the cladding is put on that Element.
BartBart October 28th, 2011, 09:40 AM Most of the Light Diamond framing is up (the last piece can be seen on the ground)

maschio December 26th, 2011, 12:33 PM Very specific design - I have to admit. I have never seen such a original building, can't wait to see it finished. :)
Calvin W December 28th, 2011, 08:02 AM Everytime I travel past this buildiing I just shake my head. I can only hope once the developments start around it that most of this building will be hidden from sight....
Gherkin December 28th, 2011, 06:31 PM Really nasty! At least the renders were honest. Let's hope the interior is worth it.
BartBart December 29th, 2011, 09:41 AM You do realise that most of the cladding and nearly all the glass is still to be installed. i.e. the aluminium (silver and coloured) is NOT the final cladding? (the biggest complaint about the design seems to be people not knowing this)

Bart I do well and truely know this. I still hope most of this building will be blocked out by other developments soon. Hate to have this eyesore blotting Perths skyline for many years to come. At least you can't see it from the river or South Perth!
BartBart December 30th, 2011, 05:05 AM It is an eyesore, yet it is not finished yet? Any building under construction without final cladding looks horrible. Surely it is worth waiting 'til it is finished. And it isn't tall enough to be seen from very far - except to those travelling on the freeway.

Yes I know it's not finished been around since this thing started back in the 90's wasn't it? :)
I just can't imagine it looking good with any type of cladding other than the World's biggest paper bag to cove up it's ugly face.
I am one of them who want this arena, just think it could have actually looked better than a crushed beer can that it is....
Sonrise December 31st, 2011, 07:49 AM That is literally one of the ugliest buildings that I have ever seen. It looks like something my four year old daughter put together with her blocks. They just tried to hard. :ohno:
Cardamomun December 31st, 2011, 08:41 AM Great project, want to be to be the 1st sat there
Jericho-79 January 2nd, 2012, 05:26 AM Where exactly in Perth is this arena being built?
Is it being built near Subiaco Oval?
sandstorm6299 January 2nd, 2012, 12:12 PM The Arena is being built on Wellington St, between the freeway and where the Perth Entertainment Centre used to be. It's pretty much on the edge between Perth and West Perth. It is a good 5-10 minute drive between the Arena and Subi Oval.

If it helps - have a look at these free pdfs of the CBD. Perth Arena is between the Freeway, railway line, Wellington St and the extension of Milligan Street.
