What are your 5 favourite tall buildings in Australia? What buildings give you that “OH YEAH!” feeling or simply leave you with a sense of serene satisfaction due to their sublime rightness?

BUT, there is a catch! To mitigate against yet another orgy of Ozscraper parochialism, you must name at least two from OUTSIDE your state.

Also, it's not all about height. We all know that size doesn’t matter – it’s what you do with what you’ve got that counts ;)

Remember – at least two must be from outside your state!! :D

I really had to think hard about this. And I am not completely happy with my choices. But here’s my top 5 (in no order):

* Australia Square, Sydney - Ageless, Sophisticated simplicty. Such a positive to ratty George St

* Riparian Plaza, Brisbane - Brings the best all in one from AUstralia's greatest high-rise architect.

* Aurora Place, Sydney - Puts Chifley to shame. Too many good features.

* Deutsche Bank, Sydney - Foster never dissappoints. Atrium is um, no words. Love the eastern side - western side is a modern classic.

* 140 William Street, Melbourne - Same as Australia Square. Look at the lobby shots below (3rd last in this thread). Perfect.

lol - you can probably tell i don't like fussy past-glorifying pomo and there aren't that many reflective glass buildings i like either. I love the clarity and discipline of the designs in these five. They're not the biggest in AUstralia, but they are certainly amongst the very best.

If i had to include others, i'd say Horizons Apartments and Capita (but i've already got too Seidlers), and maybe Q1 - but Sydney's Aurora is better so no need.

AUSTRALIA SQUARE, Sydney
This building is 40 years old and still looks beautiful while its 20 year-old neighbours all look deplorable. Do the “Australia Square Test” – stand in George Street and look over at it’s serene lobby area, then look around at NAB, AAPT and the old Westpac Centre and you will see what I mean.

Does anyone have any better pics of the lobby area?

Here's a RAIA Report on Architecutural Heritage – Australia Square (http://www.architecture.com.au/i-cms_file?page=224/Australia_Square.pdf)

Australia Square is one of the first modern international styled office towers in Australia by one of Australia's and the world's leading architects, Harry Seidler.

Harry Seidler was awarded the Royal Australian Institutes of Architects Gold Medal in 1976.

It established new principles in design and construction through its distinctive circular form and the creation of a large public open space at ground level.

The public space is established by a plaza that is set above street level and steps down throughout the site and defined on the east by a 6 storey rectangular building acting as a foil to the circular tower. The public areas include cafés, fountains, artwork (Le Corbusier tapestries, Calder Sculpture) and as one of the earliest examples of the development of comfortable public open space on private land.

The structural system was developed with one of the world's leading engineers, Pier Luigi Nervi, and features technological advances of the time such as patterned ribbing and tapering exterior columns in quartz faced pre cast concrete as permanent formwork. The tapering columns add emphasis to the height of the tower further emphasising its elegance. At the time it was built in 1961 - 1967 the tower was the world's tallest light weight concrete building.

The circular form was structurally extremely efficient and the consistency of floor plan, the use of precast façade and in situ core lead to floors being erected in 5 working days which set new standards in office tower construction.

Australia Square Tower is an elegant building which has maintained its aesthetic appeal and is still regarded as a landmark building in Sydney and an icon of Australian architecture

For me....

Eureka is going to definitely be number one on completion...pushing this list down a notch. Not because of height, but the fact that it is an amazing design imho.

1. Governor Phillip Tower, Syd: Felt pretty indifferent about GPT for a long time, but now I love it for its grandeur.

2. 140 William St, Melb: Class A corporate box.

3. ANZ World HQ, Melb: Call me corny, call me shmaltzy, but it's a personal fave.

4. 333 Collins St: Melb: Self explanatory &

5. Waterfront Place, Bris: This tower is certainly dating, yet still loving its changeable silhouette.

^^ Now as above, with pics:

Hard choice to be honest. Firstly I will only vote on buildings I have seen in person .. so byebye most of the new QLD towers :P In no order, my list

Eureka, even when incomplete it is still dominating and unique. A monument.
Deutsche Bank, a completely different building from every angle you look at.
Governer Philip Tower, very under-rated .. specially from street level. I love how the crown runs all the way through the structure of the building.
Central Park, so very 90's in so many ways. Though you could stick this building in any capital city and it would stand out on it's own.
ANZ Gothic, adds something different to the Australian skyscraper skyline.

My top 5 in order:

[1] 101 Collins Street, Melbourne.

[2] Aurora Place, Sydney.

[3] Australia Square, Sydney.

[4] YE5, Melbourne

[5] 140 William Street (ex BHP House), Melbourne.

Just missing out is Republic, Melbourne.
Eureka once completed, might knock out one of the others to enter the top 5.

It basically just told us what everyone on here already knew. The interview with the window cleaner guy was interesting though. Natalie was talking to him from one of the balconies while he was hanging outside in his BMU basket!! lol. He said that once, the basket freefell for aout 2 metres while he was in it. That'd have to be scary! :eek2: It takes the window cleaners about 7 weeks on average to clean all the windows, which by then, it's time to start all over again! lol

No surprises in my top 5. To me, they're all a tier above the rest.
In no particular order, we have Melbourne's ANZ HQ and 333 Collins joined by Sydney's Aurora, Chifley and GPT. All stunning buildings. All are not done justice until seen in person.
New buildings I haven't seen in person could make their way onto the list but that's rather unlikely. I've seen Eureka nearing completion and love it but I'll reserve my final judgement until I get back down to Melbourne for a decent look in the future. I'm thinking it'd slot into 5-10 though. None of the new QLD ones seem overly inspiring, although I suppose Riparian may enter my top 1000 upon inspection, you never know.

Gee, when I tallied up the Rate Our Talls on the old OZCraper site, 333 Collins Street, Melbourne was Numero Uno. I know a lot of towers have come on line since, but so far I'm the only one that has voted for it.

Also, I know Anton set out the rules to vote for @ least 2 that aren't in your state, but going thru this thread, a lot of forumers have voted as No.1 a scraper either in their city and/or state. :|

BTW For all those that voted 140 William St, Melbourne:

Brisbane's Mincom Central looks nice.

I've done some stats on the voting by state. Turns out we aren't as parochial as expected. Maybe that is the max 3 buildings from your state rule. (which by the way, most people stuck to). The max vote for your state is 60% - ie, 3 out of 5. The most parochial state comes in at 53%. Not bad if that's the worst.

There are some interesting results there. (brilliant pic of WT earlier cul - intricate indeed! good stuf)

Aurora is 2 votes from the top yet it is half the height of no.'s 1 & 2. Great effort.

I never knew GPT was so popular. Deserves it

And what a solid result for 140 William and AUstralia Square! Very pleasing indeed.

People seem to have gotten over Chifley. Nice building, but not amazing IMO.

I am surprised that Riparian scores quite low. hmmmm - it's amazing. And Deutschebank although it is currently no. 5, it only just gets over half the votes of No. 1. pity.

Later i will post votes for each building by state - i've got it here but no time right atm. But, we are not as biased as I expected.

To be honest, i don't yet get Eureka - sure it's huge but visually. Anyway, i will be in Melbourne later this month and it will be one of my first ports of call.

It's only natural that the newer buildings get more, most of our older buildings are boring 80's and 70's concrete or glass boxes and really only gather half their votes for sentimental reasons. It's only recently that the bigger buildings are able to experiment with more interesting styles.

Likewise, height matters, a design has to be really good to be short and stick out, because short skyscraper invariably look fat and fat is not as attractive as slim, that is just the way of the world. But I make exceptions for buildings like Yve which are short but very sexy.

Anyway, if new buildings were not winning something would be seriouslys amiss with architecture in this country. I mean how hard is it to beat a 70's box!:P

hmm, maybe your post misses the point about good design a bit. Most things when new look great and are tendy, others are classics that last. Like any style, much "modern" architecture was badly done, but some were done well and are classics - take Aust Square and 140 William. At the time all their "modern" cousins would have looked great - it was the trend - but many dated. the same will happen to today's buildings. some will stand the test of time, many (most?) won't.

At it's completion, i was entranced by Chifley. yet now i am ambivalent to it. It's no shocker, but i no longer think it is amazing. So far it's only got 4 votes, i reckon it would have been close to the top 10 years ago. Interesting how GPT is still voting high. As i recall it was less popular 10 years ago compared to CHifley. I also have opinions on which of current crop of new stunners (last 5 years) will last and which will look dated in 10 years - but i don't want to start a war!! lol

Also, todays architecture compard to the 60's and 70's is not about "experimenting with interesting styles" compared to "boring concrete and glass boxes". The word was simple (but not simplistic) and it can look brilliant. Check out Aust Square's and 140 Will's lobbys. The simplicity was intended and it can be sublime. Before that you had all the neo-gothic styles - these were experimental and more ornamental like todays. But saying "modernism" was not experimental and "interesting" misses the point too - it was highly experimental and interesting at the time.

Sure, Aust Square and 140 William do date in the sense that you can look at them and can guess what decade they are from, but they still look great. Just stand next to Australia Square (looks best up close) and compare it to it's younger neighbours tha are so badly dated after 2 decades. It is in a league of it's own.

Perhaps it is an age thing - it would be interesting to see an age against all the votes. lol - as a teenageer/young 20's i thought it was all about spires, flashy glass, and angled roofs. Then i started to understand the sophistacation in "simplicity" done well (not a contradiction). Ie, classic modernism is not really "simple" when you look at it closley.

It's the same with anything that involves design - cars, houses, furniture, fashion, even fonts. Most look good (or just trendy?) when new, but the good stuff lasts.

lol - what a ramble, if i took the time to edit it i could probably say it with 1/3 of the words. sorry

Anton, yes one day these just finished buildings will likewise look dated, but that's just the point, like cars or anything else, the new models will invariably be better.

The difference is, you consider some of them classics, whilst I wouldn't rate a single skyscraper in the world as a 'classic'. If I want real, truly breathaking work, I will go walk thru the Vatican and gaze at the work of Michealangelo, Bernini etc. Now THAT is architecture made by the best artists in all of history.

So some 70's or 80's experiements in skyscraper design in Australia, or even Q1 or whatever, let's be honest, none of this new stuff even compares in the slightest. It's like pop music, it comes and goes, some may attain classic status like the Beatles, but well, none of it is exactly Mozart is it?

I think it's wrong to compare buildings of different eras as architecture has diverged in different directions throughout time and in different parts of the world, experimenting with new materials, new methods of construction etc as well as lifestyle. What may have worked a few centuries ago wouldn't in our era. People have different needs nowadays, buildings have more and more constraints placed upon them these days, meeting certain requirements on a small budget be it achieving certain energy ratings or meeting the needs of a client and what not.

Locke

Yep, exactly, but it's why there are no truly great buildings being built today, nor have been for the last century - No one can afford to do it anymore, nor for that matter are there any truly great artists around like those of the past. Even if there were, their hands would be tied by all the reasons you have given.

i've got the full spreadsheet at home - so off the top of my head:

* As of last night, more Queenslanders had voted for Rialto (5) than Victorians (3). lol (Queenslanders not wanting to vote for Eureka?)

* And although Q1 and Eureka are overall the two most popular scrapers and both QLD and VIC had their own building as their favourite, both Vic and Qld had at least one OTHER interstate building ahead of the other state's. make sense? the actual numbers are clearer.

* Riparian has not done as well as i expected. It is one of AUstralia's greatest.

* But I'm "well-chuffed" to see the solid showing for both Australia Square and 140 William.

* I also note no-one voted for 1 O’Connell (fortunately!!!) or AMP Centre or AMP building, or AAPT Centre. and one vote only for MLC Centre.

* No-one voted for Grosvenor Place (Syd) or Riverside (Bris) – that is sad. :(

* No-one voted for our “great place”, Westpac Place.

* So far, 52% of votes from NSW went to NSW buildings (max allowed = 60%), 54% of VIC votes went to VIC, and 30% of QLD votes went to QLD.

* Only 30% of the votes for WA actually came from WA (but, WA voters were small group so more interstate votes is perhaps really not that surprising). what was really odd was 42% of WA's votes came from VIC compared to only 12% from NSW and 15% from QLD. (Vic's maybe not wanting to to vote for NSW or QLD?!? ;))

* Deutschebank is NSW's favourite building - but only 1 Victorian voted for it and 3 QLD's voted for it. But only 8 of Aurora's vote came from NSW - 17 votes (more than double) came from outside of the state - it is an interstate favourite.

that's all i can remember at the moment - spreadsheets at home.

Never too late to vote :D

It's interesting how much better GPT rates here compared to in the international forum.

In the international fourm GPT is ranked #65 while Chifley is ranked #29 while in this poll GPT has twice as many votes.

I think it is one of those towers you really have to see in person to appreciate.

Personally, although it looks very nice on the skyline from a distance, it's best appreciated up close. If this was a street view or podium/lobby vote, then GPT just might be in my top 5.

Which gets me thinking, there's two aspects to appreciating big buildings - their affect on the skyline (ie, what they look like from a distance) and their effect on the streetscape (ie, from up close). Many do one well but not the other. Eg, for me Aust Sq and 140 William look best up close, whereas Latitude is more of a distance scraper (I don't like its street frontage but love the rest). The best do both brilliantly, which brings me to...

Look at this sudden outpouring of love for Aurora (my personal number 1).

^^

Hmm – I put the “catch” in to try and avoid everyone just voting completely for their own. Who knows what it would have looked like – maybe it didn’t change anything (as in your case).

It’s good if everyone has made an effort to think of buildings in other cities and not just their own. And hopefully it encourages better discussion across state boundaries. The interstate element has certainly widen my knowledge. Other people?

I think it is inevitable that people will tend to chose their own – ie, simply cos it is what they are most familiar with, not necessarily cos they just want to see their state win. That was part of,. ie, i figured rather than being biased, some people just didn't know much about what was interstate. Others - like Muse, TonyP, do know a lot and didn't need "the catch".

In fact, I was thinking about making it only 2 buildings from your own state, but the fact is, we know (and thus prefer?) what’s in our back yards even if we couldn’t care less about any notions of a state winning. So 3 votes for your own seemed a good compromise.

Truth is, the results have been exceptionally close and balanced. Not 100% but certainly impressive.

101 & 120 Collins together would make my top 5 because they work so well together in the skyline but seperately I find it had to rate either one over GPT by a very small margin.

Also I wouldn't have changed my vote if I could vote all Melbourne, GPT and World Tower would still be top 5.

Top 5 under 150m would also make a really good poll because comparing 297m to 60m just isn't fair really :-)

hhmm - "stumpy" it may be, but it makes stumpy look great - kinda of a trim and taunt stumpy. Unlike say our newest stumpy - Westpac Place - which looks positively pot-bellied (not to mention it's tacky paper party hat compared to Aurora's classy crown).

Westpac is "stumpy' beacuse its the widest skyscraper in Australia!! and its not much under 150m/500ft.

I haven't done one for a week, but the thread slowed down. The state by state spreadsheet is at home so i will wait off til tonight. I'll try and post how each state voted - there is some interesting things there.

from memory...
Like Deutschebank being the favourite for NSW's members, yet Aurora being the favourite NSW building amongst all voters (less than a 1/3 of its votes came from NSW).

Also, Q1 was not the favourite interstate building for Victorains, and conversely Eureka was not the interstate favourite for QLD'ers - but they ARE the two favourite buildings overall..

Rialto got more votes from QLD than it did from Victoria even though QLD and VIC voted in almost equal numbers.

And more Victorians voted for WA buildings (42% of votes for WA buildings came from VIC compared to 30% from WA itelf and a combined 20% from QLD and NSW)

All that may have changed though since my last count - so stay tuned.

Yeah, Gateway is not too bad at all. I've managed to find more respect for it in recent years. Certainly more than other blank glass boxes from that time - Colonial State Bank and National Bank, those twin towers in Brisbane (ANZ?) and another certain "tall one" in Melbourne. Maybe its because of the non-glass edges.

yes, imagine Gateway double height.

ive always thought it should of been atleast 200m high.
theres a reason why it was diamond shape. It was turned north/south so the "gateway" vista into the city wasnt ruined.there were some hideous proposals first off with bldgs same height as goldfields (110m) and then therewas a 190m tower similar to tallest AMP, then Gateway was chosen from pettle, thorpedo & wanker.

Rialto Tower - Melbourne - Simple and classic skycrapper style

120 Collins St Melbourne - very underrated - but classy and New Yorky style... looks great in different angles.

Aurora Sydney - Creative curve and the location make it fantastic - near Opera House which is its reflection in its design

Governor Phillip Tower - very corporate and boxy - but confident and commanding.

Other worth mentioned

140 Willaim St - Melbourne
Central Park - Perth
Vision Brisbane - when completed
Ernst and Young - Melbourne

The MLC is quiet something of that Era ..Its equivalent - 80 Collins st is too small to gain Iconic status in Melbourne.

The Prima tower may go ahead one day, but atm its just a proposal.

Gee, when I tallied up the Rate Our Talls on the old OZCraper site, 333 Collins Street, Melbourne was Numero Uno. I know a lot of towers have come on line since, but so far I'm the only one that has voted for it.

I love 333 - I used to work across the road in the AMP building! We used to call that building The Borg Cube!

Counting only towers I've seen up close.
I'm also a fan of Bourke Place - Melbourne
CP1 - Brisbane
Gotham City - Brisbane
St George Tower - Canberra

(Sorry if I don't know the exact names)

Freshwater Place has turned out to be a damn fine apartment tower:

I haven't seen it in the flesh, but i am not sure about the curvy nature of it. Too much glass for my liking.

But i love the tight white section down the side - are they balconies? And the podium is stunning - there is something very Asian and also Art Deco about it. It's gorgeous - and a podium is really more important than how a skyscraper looks from a distance (as much as most of us would hate to admit it).

Very nice work indeed

This is arguably Sydney's most underated building. I am so glad you mention it - many people hate Seidler, and even those who like him rarely mention this one. (although, even Avatar, one of this forums biggest Seidler haters actually likes it a lot). I don't think it is one of his masterpeice's yet at the same time, not only is it one of his most fascinating, it is also one of SYdney's and hence Australia's most intriguing buildings.

It's a stunner. Sure, it isn't Aurora or Q1 pretty, but it is nonetheless a highly inovative and interesting building. We need more buildings that "push the envelope" like this one (that's such a stupid term). Unfortunately it is kinda hidden in that narrow street - but it is also quite tall. it may even be in Sydney's top ten tallest - at least close to it.

http://www.seidler.net.au/graphics/024_DT02.jpg

shaggers, when i get around to updating the state by state results for the top 5, i can't include your vote unless you chose another four buildings. Surely there are four more you can nominate - i'd be particularly happy if you included another seilder or two. :D

Well, if it's more Seidler you want:

1. Capita Centre: Still my favourite. By the way, it's rated 15th tallest in Sydney at 153m, and it's that odd shape simply because that's all the land he had. A successful solution I feel.
http://www.seidler.net.au/graphics/024_DT01.jpg
2.Australia Square: this simply has to be in there; it has everything. It's iconic, groundbreaking, still one of the most beautiful buildings in Australia and it has a crap revolving restaurant on the roof.
http://www.seidler.net.au/graphics/014_DT02.jpg
3.Deutsche Bank: This just commands to be there. Those spires are probably the best in the world
http://www.fosterandpartners.com/internetsite/images/News/201/201_01.jpg
4. Riparian, Brisbane: I love this building. It's like Harry's last big fuck you to the world. It's got a very "the future is now" vibe and I think the three sections harmonise and contrast simultaneously
http://www.seidler.net.au/graphics/032_DT01.jpg
5.ICI Building, Melbourne. I really do love BHP house but no one is including this one so I thought I would for old time's sake - literally. It's from 1958 for chrissake and hasn't dated one bit.

Eureka is dif to WT. Eureka is a "same floor plate" category for 3/4 of the tower. Alot of planners lump Wt in modern deco style.
anyway both towers had same architects involved.so they know how to "do a resi".

in any case, the "complexity" or "unsightly clutter" of world tower contrasts well with the glassy uniformity of nearby E&Y tower. world tower may be outdone by eureka on individual merit, but i'd take world square over eureka or fwp + 2 southbank blvd

What does it matter? I've seen Riparian upclose, and on my impression then I still believe holds the same form from close or far, brutal and grotesque. It tries to be too many things at once.

I'm not sure what Shell is clad in, does not look good either way though.
