Chery ambitious about its new models
UPDATED: 16:58, February 13, 2006
The A520 carrying the 2.0L engine independently developed by Chery was officially released in Beijing on Jan.10. Price at 88,888 yuan, it for the first time reduced the price of 2.0L cars below 100,000 yuan. So it is quite surprising that Chery's planned sale of the product is only 30,000 units.
"We want to change our past practice. The marketing of A520 might take our planned marketing rhythm rather than the market demand as guidance". Li Feng, general manager of the Chery Sales, said the purpose is to build up confidence among the consumers. A520 is a very competitive product, Li Feng believed, but of course about thirteen or so domestic mid-market models are sharing the same market segment with it.
Chery will release six new models – A5, S21, A18, V3, S22 and S12 in 2006. Meanwhile, it will launch the upgraded QQ, setting the target of annual sale at 281,000 units. Obviously, QQ which has made distinct contributions to Chery, will still shoulder the task of driving sales in 2006. "Without QQ's annual sale of over 100,000 units there would not have been the second and third model which can top annual sale of 100,000 units". Li Feng believed the second model to catch up with QQ in sale might be Qiyun and the next is A5 series.
Tiggo and Orient Son are the high-end products among Chery's existing models. However, sales of the two models were no quite satisfactory last year. Li Feng believed the world auto industry has its labor of division and it is hard for the growing proprietary brands to make eye-catching performance on the high-end auto market. All the same, it is hard for Benz and BMW to enter the market segments of less than 300,000 yuan. Chery will fortify its brand building and marketing of Tiggo and Orient Son in 2006. In the meantime, engines of existing models as a whole will no longer rely on outsourcing.

I really can't wait to see what will happen when China enters the US car market.
BTW if those pics are any indication then China's auto industry is really improving its quality of workmanship at a significant rate.

SHENYANG, China — China Brilliance has just released the first product of its new car plant in Zhonghua, which was set up with technical assistance from BMW. This is China Brilliance's second passenger car, and it is named the Jinjue (which can be translated either as "Triumphant Horse," or "Winning Gold").
Whatever you call it, it is a sporty sedan designed by Pininfarina in Italy. China Brilliance hopes that it will help raise sales levels from last year's 17,500 to 30,000 units this year. Sedans have higher profit margins than minibuses, which are still the key products of the company.
The Jinjue is 183 inches long, built on a shortened version of its bigger brother's platform. That car, called the Grandeur, is already being distributed in Europe. The Jinjue has four powertrain options from 1.6 to 2.0 liters, most of which are supplied by Shenyang-Mitsubishi.

China's Chery will be next Toyota, U.S. importer says
By Chang-Ran Kim / Reuters
SHANGHAI - It's the last thing the U.S. auto industry needs: another Toyota Motor Corp.
But that's exactly what Malcolm Bricklin, the energetic 66-year-old founder and CEO of Visionary Vehicles, is predicting will become of China's Chery Automobile Co., whose cars he plans to begin selling in the United States in January 2007.
"We're going to make billions from this business," Bricklin said in an interview at Chery's booth at the bustling Shanghai auto show, which opened to the public on Friday.
"Chery is going to be the next Toyota," he told Reuters.
He intends to help the Chinese maker join the ranks of General Motors Corp. Ford Motor Co. and Toyota to sell at least 2 million cars in the world's biggest auto market.
If Bricklin's calculations go to plan, the day when Chery emulates the world's second-largest and most profitable car maker could come as early as in several years.
The man best known for importing the cheap Yugo hatchback into the United States in the 1980s wants to sell 250,000 Chery cars in the first year through 250 dealerships nationwide.
By 2010, the Visionary/Chery partnership would have 18 models including two-door, four-door and sport-utility vehicles, to help sales to 1 million units. The line-up will not include the QQ minicar, which General Motor Corp. claims is a copy of its Chevrolet Spark and for which it is suing Chery.
"The problem is going to be that we're not going to be able to build enough cars to satisfy demand," he said.
Chery, China's eighth-largest car maker, sold 90,000 vehicles last year including 8,000 exports, mostly to Malaysia and Iran.
To hear Bricklin tell it, his business model of "redefining the price of luxury" is fool-proof.
"We're bringing Chinese cars that are beautiful, luxurious, built in state-of-the-art facilities, and we're going to sell them for far less than the competition," he said.
"Our SUV is going to compete with the BMW X3 and sell for less than a Subaru. It will compare to a $35,000 car and we will sell it for $19,000."
PERFECT MATCH
The entrepreneur says he searched all over the world for the right partner, travelling to Romania, Poland, India and England, among other countries, before ending up at Chery, based in the eastern Chinese province of Anhui.
"They are so head-and-shoulders above anybody who ever broke into the car business," he said. "They know what they're doing, they're sophisticated, they're intelligent, they're hard-working and ambitious -- every good quality you'd ever want to have."
Despite having ambitions to broaden its exports, including to Europe, it was Chery that stalled, following Chinese tradition of taking its time to gauge a potential business partner's personal character before signing any deals.
When Chery management insisted they needed to get to know him better before offering a contract on Bricklin's second visit to China, the charismatic entrepreneur volunteered to bare all.
"He took off his shirt down to his skin and said to them, 'This is me! This is who I am!'," his son Jonathan, a filmmaker who is working on a documentary of the partnership, said.
Chery eventually gave Bricklin the deal of his dreams.
It's a prospect that frightens Detroit's heavyweights, both of which are already losing market share to Asian brands, to the point where Ford hinted that trade barriers might be in order.
"How long will the U.S. be an open market for whatever comes in? It won't be forever," said Ford President Jim Padilla.
"Unlimited growth of imports is something that has to be balanced over time," he told reporters in Shanghai.
Balancing imports is exactly what Bricklin intends to do.
After the first million cars sold, Visionary/Chery would build a manufacturing base in the U.S. to avoid any political backlash -- "just like Toyota does", he said.
"What we're saying to the world is, 'Don't worry about us. We're not coming in and taking over everybody.'"
Bricklin warned, however, that other Chinese makers would probably follow in his footsteps, bringing more unwanted competition to a saturated market.
"They'd be crazy not to," he says. "I'd expect two to two-and-a-half million cars a year to be imported from China."

Chinese car passes new crash test in Germany
2005-10-07 00:34:44 Xinhua English
THE HAGUE, Netherlands, Oct. 7 (Xinhuanet)-- The Chinese"Landwind", the first car entering European market three months ago, proved itself as a safe car after passing a recent crash test in Germany.
"The result of this crash test is very encouraging," Peter Bijvelds, the Dutch importer of this Chinese sport utility vehicle, told a press conference on Thursday in the Hague, the Netherlands.
"The crash test measurements for both driver and passenger confirm that this vehicle is fully compliant with current EU regulations," said Bijvelds.
The positive results of the crash test, organized by German inspection agency TUV in Frankfurt, was in total contradictory with another crash test by another German car club ADAC in middle September.
The ADAC said its crash test indicated that the driver would not survive a head-on collision at speeds of 64 kilometers per hour or more.
The front of the SUV would crumple and crush the driver, the unofficial organization said.
Bijvelds, however, question the validity of the crash test and even doubted that the ADAC were manipulated by the powerful German automotive industry which perhaps found a way to keep the Chinese competitor from entering the market.
Bijvelds said that it was"a great coincidence" that the results of the ADAC crash tests were published on the eve of the Frankfurt car show, where the economically priced Chinese SUV was to be officially unveiled.
He also called it strange that the manufacturer was not informed of the test results, as is usually the case to help manufacturers learn and improve their vehicles.
"We as the official importer had not been informed before and we were not invited to be present when the tests were performed. Upon our request for further information, there was only silence," he said.
In response to the ADAC's warning, Landwind's maker, China's Jiangling Group, asked the German agency TUV to test the vehicle for compliance to European safety standards.
"We have been hit hard(by ADAC test), and we think that not all has been fair," Jiangling and its importer Bijvelds said in a statement.
"We will meet any safety or emission standard that is required to sell our cars in the European Union markets. The customer will prove us right," it added. Enditem

rantanamo March 4th, 2006, 01:29 AM in actual car quality, many makes are very similar in quality. Our perception of quality tends to be more about who buys them, and how that set of buyers take care of their cars. Example being, drivers of Chevy and Ford trucks buy a lot of them and are very rough on them. More young people buy chevy's. More middle class buy cars such as Honda Accord's and Buicks. That's why you end up with Buick's and Cadillac rating as high as BMW and Honda's in quality studies and survey's, yet they are both GM vehicles just like the chevy's that have a bad reputation. "Geely FC-1 may be named Geely Tiger, but certainly not LUHU (land-rover)," said Geely chairman LI Shufu.
The trademark "Land-rover" originally belongs to Rover Britain. As Rover has been pruchased by Nanjin Automobile Group Corporation (NAC), Geely won't use the name LUHU (Land-rover) for the moment." explained Liu Jian, Manager of Geely Public Affairs.
According to information from Trademark Office under the State Administration for Industry and Commerce, "Land-rover(LUHU)" was applied for trademark registration on November 10, 1999 by Geely for the following products: Motorcycle, automobile, etc. The mark was officially registered on March 7, 2001. For the reason, all vehicles imported from Rover Britain must be renamed as "LUHU".
It is said that "Geely Tiger" will get off line on April 8. The car is equiped with 1.8L engine, considered as Geely's symbol model to develop mid-class car market.

kostya May 1st, 2006, 07:10 AM Chinese cars have a long way to go to become popular. Especially in the European market.
baersworth May 2nd, 2006, 01:12 PM Some of the cars are in fact manufactured in China by JV. That is why some cars are identical with some foreign brands, the foreign car makers just pass the design to the Chinese factories.
miamicanes May 2nd, 2006, 03:00 PM Slightly off-topic, but how are Chinese license plates assigned? Do the characters have some deterministic meaning (city/state/province/region, owner's name, etc, plus a few digits? Do they just allow people to pick 3 or 4 characters, check in the computer to make sure nobody else has them already, then submit the order to the license plate factory (which has another employee or two who reviews the requests to make sure they don't have obscene overtones)? Or do they literally pull random characters out of a metaphorical hat, so somebody could end up with a license plate that means something like "Run green studying pigeon" or "Toaster drum working cloud"? Or perhaps a computer algorithm that intentionally builds strings of unique, dense multi-radical characters that have no recognized dictionary meaning whatsoever... which I suspect would make it BRUTALLY HARD for someone to actually remember their own license plate value, and even harder to read to someone over the phone?
Sen May 2nd, 2006, 03:17 PM numbers are randomly assigned, Beijing tried the "personalized plate" for a short time, but it was abolished because the demand is too high and they run out of characters.
some chinese dislike certain numbers, so they bribe the people who assign the plate to get a better plate number.
plate starts with a chinese character, which designates the province, followed by a combination of roman letters/numbers, which have no special meaning.

China will need to get over the "Made in China" stigma that it has over here, because for us, we incorrectly assume that to mean cheap.
Don't forget, though... the very things that make cars targeted towards upper middle-class buyers expensive -- electronics gear, quality leather seats, etc -- are *massively* cheaper in China. My prediction is that Chinese automakers will horrify smug American carmakers and leapfrog directly over their low-end models, taking the current Hyundai approach: sell cars that are fully-loaded with just about everything you could ever possibly want, for a tiny bit more than you'd spend on a stripped down American or European car.
GM and Ford can compete with low-end econoboxes. They can't compete with $24,000 luxury cars and SUVs with power-everything, integral GPS navigation, and a half-dozen video displays. Moderately-priced fully-loaded luxury cars would absolutely destroy American carmakers. Everyone who buys an imported economy car instead of an American economy car actually saves the American automakers money, because they lose money on every economy car sold. Taking away their bread-and-butter market, with GM's hundreds of expensive and arbitrary options that can ONLY be ordered with other, even more expensive options, would pull the plug on their cash lifeline.

True, China's automobile industry is still at its infant stage, but with Visionary Vehicles bringing in specially designed Chery for the American market I think things will change.

Chery Automobile Co., Ltd., founded in 1997 in Wuhu City, People's Republic of China, has become the fastest-growing independent automaker in China. Chery is committed to developing world-class automobiles via cooperation with top engineering firms such as Lotus Engineering of the U.K, and Mitsubishi Automotive Engineering of Japan, and leading auto designing firms such as Bertone and Pininfarina of Italy. In its relentless pursuit of quality, Chery adopted DURR Paint Systems in its paint shop in 2004. In J.D.Power 2004 China Initial Quality Study, Chery QQ finished first in the compact car segment. In 2005, as a groundbreaking event for the Chinese automotive industry, Chery started producing China's first high-performance Euro IV engines in cooperation with AVL List of Austria. Chery has so far launched its products in 29 countries. For the time being, Chery is developing a new line-up of products aiming at auto markets in the U.S and EU. In 2005, a strategic partnership was formed between Chery and Visionary Vehicles of the USA for launching Chery products in North America in 2007. NAC, which bought the historic British marque from the bankrupt MG Rover Group last year, said it will start constructing the car plant in early 2007, and roll MG cars off its production line by May of 2008.

Sen August 11th, 2006, 11:58 PM MALAYSIA'S national car maker Proton is in talks with Chery, one of the most ambitious Chinese car companies, about a strategic alliance that would involve manufacturing in both countries.
The deal being discussed would give Chery a manufacturing platform in Malaysia and would allow Proton cars to be produced in the fast-growing Chinese car market.
Proton and Chery refused to comment on the talks. However, a senior official at Chery said the two sides were talking while another source familiar with the negotiations said they were at a relatively advanced stage, although no final agreement had been reached.
Proton said this month that it was in talks with a number of potential partners in China about a possible alliance, leaving open the prospect that it could still sign a deal with another Chinese partner. "It makes complete sense that these two companies should be talking, because it would allow Chery to produce cars in the ASEAN region and help Proton learn more about how to make low-cost cars, which is what the Chinese are really good at," said Michael Dunne, president of Automotive Resources Asia, an industry consultancy based in Shanghai
Malaysia is a member of the 10-country Association of South-East Asian Nations, or ASEAN regional grouping.
Chery is best known for its QQ mini-car, which was one of the fastest-growing models in China last year and was the subject of recently settled litigation launched by General Motors, which believed it to be a copy of its own Spark model.
However, Chery has also been the most aggressive among China's car makers in trying to enter overseas markets and is developing a series of models for the US market, where it hopes to begin selling in 2007.
Although its strategy has been to start in developing country markets such as the Middle East and Russia, it has been held back in southeast Asia by tariffs on car imports to the Asean region.
Proton's search for a Chinese partner follows the collapse of negotiations in January with Volkswagen. The company has also renewed ties with Mitsubishi of Japan, recently signing a memorandum of understanding to develop new models and share component supplies and technical support.
The Japanese company provided the base models and technology on which Proton was founded in 1983. If a deal is formalised between the two companies, it is expected to initially involve the assembly of kits of Proton models at Chery facilities in China, while kits of Chery models will be sent to Proton's Malaysian facilities to be assembledhttp://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/common/story_page/0,5744,18658172%255E36375,00.htm

zergcerebrates August 12th, 2006, 03:31 AM it's such a shame the build quality and crash safety is so crap on these cars.
Also a shame that the design of most of the cars completely rip off established makers cars.
and give me a 3-Series over the chinese car anyday of the week
Ah but theres something you fail to realize. Chinese didn't design some of the cars. Take this for example, a rip off of BMW 3? Hmm but its designed by pininfarina, take Pontiac for example its grille is so similar to BMW is it a rip off? You tell me.
http://www.nnauto.cn/auto/supercar/2006/2_Brilliance_Junjie/Img66265.jpg
And this Chery M14 was also designed by Pininfarina:

Theres also another thing you have to consider, most Chinese car companies average age is only 10yrs old. Their company existed for some time but they didn't start to develop cars till recently. It takes to time produce quality cars, Hyundai, Toyota or other Japanese cars didn't come out super cars to begin with it takes steps. Americans use to look down on Asian cars well, they ate their own words, looks whos crap now? The development speed the Chinese are going through it'll kick US cars in a very short time, lets see how Chery will do in USA.

Xorcist August 12th, 2006, 09:21 PM hm...right now we just make jokes about chinese cars and thank god, you can´t buy them here in europe ( i doubt that anyone would buy them...especially in germany, where even japans lexus sell´s only a few cars). chinese cars are cheap, unsafe and well...with a horrible quality. but hey, 15 years ago we laughed about korean cars and they are quite good and successful now, so...if the established car manufactures don´t take care, they´re soon history.
a good example is GM vs.Toyota. 35 years ago, people rather bought a chevy than a toyota...and NOW??????
anyway...i prefer german cars (hey...it´s a patriotic thing...sorry)

China’s car exports triple
Related entries: Business
CHINA’S export of sedans in the first half of this year more than tripled compared to a year ago to 34,506 units, which is also more than the total volume of last year, Xinhua news agency reported today.
Among all the vehicles exported to overseas markets, sedans accounted for 27.5 percent of the total with its sales reaching US$243 million, a 250 percent jump from a year ago, the report said. The unit sales growth was 259.5 percent.
Most of the sedans for export are installed with engines between 1 to 1.5 liters, accounting for 71.3 percent of the total export volume of sedans and 75.5 percent of total sales.
The country also exported 125,500 completed cars, chassis not included, from January to June, which is 86.8 percent more than a year ago.
China exported cars to 117 countries around the world from January to June. The number of cars exported to Europe and South America surged rapidly during the period. The European market has become China’s second largest market, following Asia, with its share accounting for 21.5 percent of total car exports.
Exports to South America also increased 117 percent in the first half, the report said.
Anhui Province-based Chery, China’s eighth-largest carmaker, ranked first in exporting self-branded cars, followed by Geely and FAW Xiali Co Ltd.
Chery exported 13,548 units from January to June, accounting for 67.7 percent of total self-branded car exports. The company exported almost all its models including the QQ compact car, Tiggo sport utility vehicle and Eastar sedan.
“Domestic carmakers gave up their profits to increase their export volume as prices continue to drop,” said Jia Xinguang, chief auto analyst from China National Automotive Industry Consulting and Development Corp.
Export prices slumped to US$7,039 for the first four months. The price has dropped for three consecutive years since 2003.
Shang Yugui, a spokesman of Great Wall Motors Corp, China’s largest SUV exporter, said car exporters used to lower the price to compete against each other because their models are almost the same in quality and functions.

Kick US cars? I don't think so. You can't go on from sh*t to sold-out brand in 5 years. Even the Japanese, who had a great auto history and pride before taking on the US Market, didn't hit it off before the 1990s (10-20 years min.).

Well US cars are crap period! Besides Canada or USA American cars are hardly doing well overseas. They got kicked by the Japanese and now Koreans are gaining ground, sooner or later the Chinese will do the same, and the last thing the US car manufacturers need are cheap priced cars from China. Cheverolet highest selling brand? Lolz! In the GM group perhaps but GM is loosing BILLIONS of dollars annually, factory closings, and job cuts and still continue to loose markets share..yah something to look forward and be proud of huh? The point is if they design better cars and make automobiles people want they wouldn't be as they're now which is in deep shit.
As I've mentioned before many fail to realize that Chinese automobile companies are at its infant stage and they already make cars that are only a few years behind major car makers. At this speed Chinese car manufacturers can do what the Koreans and Japanese did but in a shorter time frame. Don't forget the Chinese already export their cars to 117 countries. The US market is perhaps the last major one they haven't enter yet but its the most important and I'm sure Chinese companies will tread carefully.
Sen August 16th, 2006, 09:36 PM GM is doing well in China, but none of their cars are American, they carry Chevrolet and Buick badges but are actually Daewoo.

WIKIPEDIA
It is the highest selling GM marque. In the North American market in 2005, Chevrolet outsold its main American rival, Ford, for the first time in 19 years, making it once again the top-selling marque in the United States.
Also, GM only good in the USA??
Chevrolet sales in Asia Pacific, the industry’s second-largest region, grew 62 percent compared with year-ago levels. The brand’s performance dramatically outpaced the region’s industry growth rate of 9 percent. Chevrolet sales in China (up 180 percent) and India (up 19.3 percent) powered much of this growth. n Latin America – a traditional Chevrolet stronghold – sales grew 27.4 percent compared with the same period a year ago and compared to an industry growth rate of 19 percent. Chevrolet’s sales performance in Argentina (up 18 percent), Brazil (up 26.8 percent) and Venezuela (up 57 percent) accounted for most of this growth.
Chevrolet sales in Europe also contributed to the brand’s solid first-quarter results, growing 8.1 percent compared with regional growth of 4.5 percent. Chevrolet sales in Russia grew 23 percent over the same period last year.
The introduction of the Chevrolet Captiva compact SUV later this year in Europe, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East is expected to bolster the brand’s global sales performance in these markets.

I acknowledge that GM has gone through some rough time recently, but since the agreements about Delphi and Co. were reached, the company is doing better.
Also, GM is back in the "green zone" if you READ CAREFULLY
General Motors Corp. today reported better-than-expected quarterly results after cutting jobs and improving sales of its highly-profitable SUVs, but still was dragged down in the May-June period by huge restructuring costs.
The world's largest automaker posted a quarterly loss of $3.2 billion, or a $5.62-per share, compared with a loss of $987 million, or $1.75 per share, a year ago in the same period.
GM was overwhelmed by $4.3 billion in one-time charges, the bulk of which was related to a sweeping buyout and early retirement plan that will eliminate nearly 35,000 hourly jobs by the end of the year.
Excluding the charges, GM scored a profit of $1.2 billion on an operating basis, or $2.03 per share, on record revenue of $54.4 billion.
Another surprise Wednesday: GM said it now expects to save $9 billion a year beginning in 2007 due to restructuring actions, up from $8 billion. About $6 billion in savings will be realized this year.
