Being a coastal city,such dark marks are common,hope the authorities keep them painted.

^^ Actually it's not as dark or ugly as it seems. But you're right. Some care has to be taken.

@Sudheesh : the pics of the highway are that of NH5 to Kolkata. The area would be close to RedHills or Puzhal, which are predominantly industrial than residential/commercial. Which explains the dull concrete look without any landscaping.

nevertheless, the road surface is very smooth, and makes for a great ride- I have travelled upto Nayudupeta (AP) on this stretch, while on the way to Tirupati.

Nice to see the MRC Nagar skyline really coming into its own now - you can see the Beliciaa Towers, JW Marriott u/c, Leela Palace u/c and the new Sun TV HQ as well.. :cheers:

The beach is in a dreadful mess though - I thought they had purchased machines to tidy up the place? I don't remember the beach being in such bad shape for a very long time.. :ohno:

^^ The slum dwellers have no civic sense - beach won't be clean unless they stop messing it.

While that may or may not be true, the part of the beach visible in this pic isn't even the slummy part of the beach - it's north of the lighthouse so it's part of the main beach..

The section in front of the fishermen's tenements has always been a mess but they had actually cleaned up the rest of the beach quite nicely recently.. Really sad to see this.. :(

Love to see another 10 cluster of 30-40 floor buildings there in MRC nagar.

In the last post with pictures, the first two seem to be located on the banks of Adayar whereas the third one is on the beach front.

Looking at them again, it is on the confluence of Adayar and Bay of Bengal that all of them are located.:)

In fact, in one of the statsitics I found that Chennai is a distant second in the number of cars after Delhi (even surpassing Mumbai which is 3rd as per the statistics).

^^ Thought it is very obvious. parking lots cost a lot in Mumbai that at times it is thrice the cost of the car.

^^ A very high percentage of folks who take the suburban trains can afford to buy a car which is not too high these days in comparison to the percapita income in Mumbai. It is the lack of roads/parking and the commuting time by road that will be huge deterrent in Mumbai. Unfortunately, even the geography of Mumbai doesn't favour automobiles as the city is linear (north/south) and therefore, the traffic flows in a limited number of roads. Whereas Delhi is circular and the radial/ring roads can take a lot of traffic.

Yup very true. The linear structure and public transportation culture reduces car ownership. But the main deterrent is lack of parking space (at home/office and public places), as car ownership is considered to be prestigious.If parking space is available, people would just buy cars and use it in the weekends for outstation trips / occasional shopping. Further multiple car ownership per family is very expensive in Mumbai as the cost goes up a lot for subseqent parking lots.

Chennai city two wheeler stats crossed 22lakhs in 2008-2009 itself. Bengaluru stats should include both Urban and rural district. If we go with district wise comparison then another 9lakhs two wheeler will get added because of Thiruvallur and Kanchipuram dt.

But Bengaluru will have more cars than Chennai. Stats shows that Bengaluru has 5.05lakh cars and Chennai have 4.67lakhs.

To avoid parking space, it is right time that SEZ and other malls should go Vertically and not horizontally which will pave way for the parking,

Interesting thing of and on the chennai roads is no body cares about crossing the road, they prefer thrill and cross the road unmindful of the oncoming cars and they seldom use the over bridges built for them, even if there is lift .

I had not even seen it but knew it was somewhere near Pallavaram/Meenambakkam area.
How is that even possible? Coming to think about it, I remember there was a photo earlier posted in one of the Chennai threads of a lake from the top of a hill. It is probably the same but from a different angle.

^^ Tricky because all landmarks are so far away and small..

You can see TNLA in the right top corner, I think a few cranes of the port container terminal in the middle and some midrises on Poonamallee High Road to the left of the picture..

So essentially, it could have been taken from pretty much anywhere in central Chennai.. :P
