Fusionist August 12th, 2005, 07:53 AM what is the point in building highrises with nice views, when most of the building view and the view from the building is blocked by HUGE hoardings ?
do you expect me to pay 20 -30 lakhs to live in a highrise only to see the backside of a ugly huge hoarding that blocks the breeze aswell ?

That's a nice shot. Whish it were high resolution.
That river (in the pic posted by LS) looks like a drain - just as it would in any other Indian city. In any western or East Asian city, that river would have beautifully landscaped gardens and public places.
In India we refer to the rivers as our mother or goddesses or gods and then fill them up with sewerage.
Basic concerns about sanitation or sewerage disposal are almost completey missing in our societies.
Actually it goes further than usual rivers. None of Chennai's 'rivers' have any natural flow of water except when it rains. In the past, there were numerous lakes and tanks around the area that used to drain into the sea through these rivers but at least for the last 50 years or so, the only non-monsoon flows into these 'rivers' are sewage and industrial waste. They ARE drains and hence it is not surprising that they look like drains! There is a massive project underway to ensure that every drop of liquid that flows into the three main channels in Chennai is first treated before release into these rivers. That will considerably clean them up. Yet the fact remains that they will contain only sewage, albeit treated sewage. The Municipal Corporation has already started the project of beautifying one stretch of the banks of the Cooum river. And in the Adyar river, which is less polluted anyway, the estuary is again seeing migratory birds.

Anniyan August 30th, 2005, 03:39 AM The Central Mofussil Bus Terminus (CMBT), which serves as the terminus for all intercity buses from Chennai, is the largest bus station in Asia.

Do any one know the total area of this station ?? and which city has the largest bus station in the world?
manojp_mp August 30th, 2005, 08:10 AM Anniyan,
CMBT is lookin very impressive ,especially for Indian standards.
The Tel Aviv Central Bus Station is the primary bus station located in Tel Aviv, Israel, located in the southern part of the city. The station serves Egged, Dan, Connex, and Metropoline intercity bus routes as well as local Dan city and suburban buses.
The Central Bus Station is the largest central bus station in the world, with a built area of 230,000 m² and a total area is 44 dunams (44,000 m²). Construction began on 14 December 1967 but was stopped prematurely. After many years it was decided to finally complete the station, whose construction was completed on 18 August 1993. Plans have surfaced recently to expand the Bus Station - according to the original plan, a 10 story office building was to be built above the bus station itself.
The Bus Station building also features a public retail mall over 7 floors, serviced by 29 escalators, 13 fast elevators and featuring more than 1,000 shops and restaurants. Intercity buses leave from a departure hall on one floor, whilst local buses leave from two other floors.
The Tel Aviv Central Bus Station is located near the Tel Aviv HaHaganah Train Station.
As one of the hubs of Israeli national transportation, the Central Bus Station has been the target of several terrorist attacks since its opening.
Information as given in Wikipedia. :)

which is that tower like building? (to the left...) Is it any building near to the Egmore rlyway station?
ChennaiChap October 28th, 2005, 03:30 PM If you are talking about the white colored building with two of its clocks visible, its Rippon Building :)
sudheeshnairs October 28th, 2005, 03:43 PM Yes Chandrakishore, that is Rippon Building, the seat of Chennai Corporation... :)
Also you can see the yellow Tower of Southern Railway which houses the reservation centre to the right of it..
I think it is the Chennai Egmore station tower which is seen almost opposite to the Rippon building, on the right side of the frame, red coloured and with two of its clocks visible...
Am I right Chennai chap?? :)
ChennaiChap October 30th, 2005, 04:55 PM Sudheesh... I think that must be the old Central Station. Egmore is too far away from Central station and also Rippon Building, Central Suburban station and Central station are located one after other in that order. So it must be chennai Central :)
sudheeshnairs October 30th, 2005, 07:43 PM Yes, Chennaichap, now I got the orientation right...Earlier it appeared to me that the red tower is in the opposite direction of the other two...
The three structures are in the same line...So It is Chennai Central..... :)

This one is my favourite,it is L&T's `Knowledge Centre' built to house the Engineering Design & Research Centre of the ECC
Architectural & Structural Design by CN Narayana Rao
It has won the fib award for `outstanding concrete structures' in 2002
The whole building is supported by a 1 sq m column, the concept of the design is to look like a tree.
Im donno whether it is RCC or Prestressed Conc Structure. Ajaypp are u sure that its a PSC design
Ajaypp November 26th, 2005, 06:48 AM Nice pics Anniyan, will try to get more. The buildings are of PSC construction alright. Will get detailed closeups soon. There is a brand new building coming up for L&T Infotech inside the same campus, it's also pretty innovative. Stay tuned....:)

The city is justifiably proud of several medical firsts. Among them are the setting up of the country's first nuclear medical oncology department (1956), employing lymphangiography in the diagnosis of lymphoid tumours (1960); using mammography to diagnose occult breast tumours (1965), using therapeutic endoscopy (1975), introducing hyperbaric oxygen therapy (1978), hyperthermia (1984), and the use of intra-operative electron therapy (1992) in the treatment of cancer.
Chennai's list of other firsts include the country's first cryo-surgery for the eye (1966), successful kidney transplant (1985), successful heart and heart lung transplant (1995), successful lung transplant; 1997), successful umbilical cord blood transplant (which involves the use of blood in the placental or umbilical cord which contains the life-saving progressive tissue needed in bone marrow transplants (1997), steriotactic radio surgery (a non-invasive technique to deliver radiation doses accurately to the affected part of the brain), and an arterial switch operation on a 10-hour-old infant.
Chennai's healthcare facilities undoubtedly are some of the best in Asia. Much of its strength is derived from the vision, dedication, hard work and enterprise of a large number of doctors.
A nice article about Chennai, the health capital of India

Govt clears Nokia's SEZ proposal
Thomas K. Thomas
New Delhi , Dec. 1
THE Finance Ministry has given the nod to Finnish telecom major Nokia for setting up a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) at Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu for manufacturing telecom equipment and mobile handsets.
Highly-placed government officials told Business Line that the necessary approvals and benefits for Nokia's SEZ has been given after the company agreed to acquire additional land which was the minimum required by law for it to be declared an SEZ.
It is understood that the company had told the government that its investments in India could be affected due to a delay by the government in notifying customs duty benefits for the SEZ. According to reports, Nokia had even begun to consider alternative locations like China if the notification was not issued soon.
When contacted, Nokia India spokesperson, however, said that the company's plans were on track. "India is an important market for Nokia and there are no changes to Nokia's commitment to the Indian market. Our manufacturing facility in Chennai is in an advanced stage of construction and we are on course to commence production at this facility in the first half of 2006," said a statement from Nokia. The company said that it was confident that it would be able to work with the Government of India to ensure smooth progress of the Chennai project. Nokia had earlier announced over Rs 650 crore of investment in the country to set up a manufacturing base

Ajaypp December 9th, 2005, 07:07 AM BMW decision reinforces Chennai's position
V. Jayanth
CHENNAI: BMW's decision to locate its assembly unit near Chennai has reconfirmed Tamil Nadu and its capital as the automobile hub of the country.
When the German automobile giant sets up its plant here, it will be the third passenger car unit in the environs of Chennai, after Hyundai and Ford. There are other giants such as Ashok Leyland and Hindustan Motors who have their units in the State, giving it a clear lead in the automotive sector and the automotive components segment.
Official sources say it was the "swift processing" by the Government and its agencies, soon after a BMW delegation expressed interest in locating the plant here, that clinched the deal. Tamil Nadu enjoys the reputation of being the "natural choice" for automobile and components manufacture.
The presence of leading component manufacturers and their ability to conform to international standards has always helped the State bag new projects.
Better infrastructure
Industry sources say the "relatively better infrastructure in the State," availability of efficient air and sea ports, international connectivity from the airport and abundant professional talent in the market have been contributing factors in enhancing Tamil Nadu's status as a "preferred investment destination."
The sources feel that though BMW has provided for a five-year period to become operational in the Memorandum of Understanding signed on Thursday, an assembly plant can be set up within two years.
Based on the market conditions and export potential, the auto major may decide to upgrade the plant into a manufacturing base in due course - the way it has done in South Africa.
According to these sources, Volkswagen has still not decided on a location for its proposed production facility in India.
"Our information is that Visakhapatnam may not be their final choice. With a new team from the automobile company now in charge, it is quite possible they will look at sites in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka before making up their mind," says a senior in the automotive components manufacturers association.

Well Chennai is a little conservative and stingy as far as it goes with buildings. Hopefully the change will
sweep soon.
Ajaypp December 15th, 2005, 11:47 AM ^^ I think I have to disagree. Chennai has been a well laid out city, thus reducing the pressure to build highrises till recently. Now, it's more than making up for it in terms of the IT booms. Over 10 million sft of space is nearing completion and even more is either planned or u/c. This city is going places. I think, it will soon steal a march over Hyderabad and even Bangalore! :)
amritap888 December 16th, 2005, 06:45 PM Ajay,
I totally agree. It has been able to develop it's IT office space without sacrificing infrastructure. Because it's spread out the development instead of concentrating it all in one central business district it has a better traffic situation than all other major metros. Their reasoning was that they'll keep doing this till they get the metro railway completed, then they'll start building highrises in the central business/IT district. Planned and logical growth, it makes total sense.

Ajaypp December 23rd, 2005, 06:19 AM Absolutely correct Amrita! :) In fact, the concept of CBD usually develops due to the need to keep critical facilities like banks, offices, hotels etc close together to minimise travel. In today's age of instant communication and rapid transit, that concept no longer holds. Global cities like Los Angelos, Tokyo and Dubai are now looking at focusing development outside their densest urban areas. Chennai has made a great start with its MRTS and IT Corridor initiatives! :)

Fort St George
Britain's First Bastion in India, the nucleus from which an empire grew, was established in a banana grove owned by a farmer called Madrasan. The offcial grant for the land, however, was given by venkatadri Nayak, the deputy of the raja of Chandragiri. The first factory within the fortified enclosure was completed on St George's Day, 23 April, 1640, and named Fort St George. This was the East India Company's Principal settlement until 1774, when Calcutta, now Kolkata, was declared the seat of the government.
The Sloping ramparts, with battlements for gun emplacement that can still be seen today, were designed and constructed by Bartholomew Robins in 1750, after the original walls were destroyed by the French army in 1749. These ramparts form an irregular pentagon, further reinforced by a ring of earthen walls that slope down to a moat surrounding the entire complex. The draw bridges that once led to the Fort's five main gates have now been replaced by roads.
The first building to be seen on entering the Fort through the sea Gate is the Neo Classical Secretariat, which is today the seat of the Government of Tamilnadu. Behind it lies the Legislative Council Chambers. With their handsome Classical Secretiat, which is today the seat of the Government of Tamilnadu. Behind it lies the Legislative Council Chambers. With their handsome Classical lines and facades embelished with gleaming black pillars, these impressive buildings, built between 1694 and 1732, are said to be among the oldest surviving British Constructions in India. The 45-m (148-ft) tall flagstaff was erected by Governor Elihu Yale in 1687 to hoist the Union Jack for first time in India

In January 1921, Sawyer met with Dr. Victor Heiser, the director of RF operations in the East. Heiser asked him to come along on a three-month tour of the RF public health sites in southeast Asia, and Sawyer agreed, though it meant missing the birth of his son (who arrived on March 23). His letters to his wife sometimes included his photos of places and people they visited, such as this view of a water pump in front of the Hotel Spencer in Madras.

I think I speak for the majority of Indians on this forum, that calling india 'one big garbage dump' is quite offensive. In fact if you appreciate heritage, diversity and natural beauty, India is one of the best country's in the world.
We know that India has a extremely poor infrasturcture no one is denying that, but if you'd been to chennai or delhi 15 years ago, and seen the changes you'd be astonished. These days we are taking metro/mono rails, new international airports, increased communications (land-lines/mobile phones) etc.
These pics arent illusions they are real. Sensex is currently at its highest in history, thats a fact. Its GDP (purchasing power parity) was approx
$3.678 trillion in 2005, only just behind Japan. You cant deny that. Sure there maybe over optimism in the economy, but that helps stimulate growth, people like Bill Gates at microsoft contiuing to invest billions in india is not stupid.

So what exactly are you trying to say that is not already known or has not been said before? If you thought a high GDP growth will bring about quantum social changes in India then you were obviously wrong. That's what we have all been hammering on in many of the threads - economic development and social development have not often gone hand in hand in India.
And if you are not seeing any positive developments in India and all the pictures here are illusions and all of India is a garbage dump, then obvioulsy there is no point in further discussions on your viewpoints. You have already made up your mind.

Okay here is a question. As per your previous posts you were in India just a year back. So it's not like that you were "unfamiliar" with conditions prevalent in India. So what mega changes did you expect in a period of one year?
No one can deny that there have been a lot of positive developments in India over the last decade. Similarly no one can deny that there is still a lot of things to be done. Both are part and parcel of "real" India.
This site is about development projects and improvements to cityscape. So naturally you see pictures of what little development we seem to be having in India. You can call it unreal or unrepresentative. That's your choice. There are plenty of websites which deal with what they think is "real" India.

The fact that infrastructure growth has not matched economic growth is a well known issue.
Anyway this discussion is neither related to this thread nor is this a whine thread. Post ur comments on the Indian economy thread. For civic sense issues u have the India Social Issues Thread in chaibar.

greatshankar February 9th, 2006, 08:58 AM ASIAN REGION OF THE FUTURE:
Winner: Tamil Nadu, India
Competition was closer and the playing field more level in the regions section of fDi’s contest, with the Indian state of Tamil Nadu edging ahead of Australia’s New South Wales to claim the title Asian Region of the Future 2005/06. Tamil Nadu took first place in the all-important category of best FDI potential.
As investors such as Ford, Hyundai, Nokia and, most recently, BMW have discovered to their delight, Tamil Nadu has managed to avoid or mitigate problems that dog other locations in India, such as infrastructure and energy failings. Through pro-active and business friendly government policies, the state has harmonious industrial relations, a matured business culture and abundant skilled manpower.
Things should only get better: several new fly-overs and by-passes are under construction that will ease traffic congestion in heaving Chennai, and an ‘IT Expressway’ project will widen the main access road to that city’s thriving software cluster. This hints at Tamil Nadu’s real secret weapon: Chennai’s IT corridor employs nearly 50,000 people, and this number is set to increase to as much as 90,000 when some of the major IT companies investing there get their operations up and running.
