The photos taken from a hitherto unexplored angle are really fine. It appears worthwhile to use the photographic medium to highlight the acts of default of the government and to urge speedy action. The unfinished station buildings remaining so for several years, is a severe condemnation on successive governments. Earlier, they were not out of harmony with the slums surrounding the area. The IT Corridor has now made the station an eyesore. If concerned institutions are indifferent, the onus is upon civil society to activate them. An exclusive photographic presentation with some 20 photos can impel action, if the forum can pursue relentlessly.

@ Keeran : This is just the platform. The first two levels of Thiruvanmiyur station are horrifyingly revolting.....hard to believe so many TIDEL Park employees use the station....

Indira Nagar Station is strewed with construction material...3 people were working on something....but the station has looked skeletal for ages.

Kasturbai Nagar,Taramani,Perungudi nd Velachery are marginally better...though still bad.


I will post these and more pics on the MRTS thread..we will continue the discussion there.



@Arul : Thanks. The road looks like this only till a few metres past Ascendas ...then it is covered with piles of mud..

But it looks better than when i saw in 2005...when the road was just 2 lanes wide and dug up by metrowater...was covered with sewage and the stench was horrible....

Loving this picture, but one problem with the FOB: what about people who are handicapped, or are walking around with their babies in strollers? How are they going to get up there? Maybe they should've installed those things, that are kind of like escalators, but minus the steps, if you guys know what i'm talking about... I don't know the proper term for it. Usually see them in Malls, so that people can take their shopping carts on them.

first step is to make people aware of using the FOB rather than dart across. second step is the inclined travelator that you are referring to. However, I don't think it will happen. Just enter any MRTS station or govt building to see ghostly elevators that have not run for a long time

forgot to add. very soon you will see the side grills on the FOB stolen for steel scrap!

Instead of the raw steel looks, cant they have a nice glass/plexiglass covering in say soot grey color wrapped around. This would make the FOB aesthetically pleasing on the eyes and prevent theft. The FOB overhead walkway is not clean (seen in other pictures), I saw scraps of paper, spit marks, yuck, poor maintenance in a high profile IT corridor area.

I am looking forward to the day when the 3 wheeler Auto is sent to the recycle yard.

The MRTS station is simply horrible crud in this day and age. Even a nice coat of paint would spruce up the look. The walls are plain old boring and dull. Getting AD people to paint the walls would improve the looks manifold. The platform surface needs upgrade. I don't see what the big deal is in upgrading simple stuff to a modern look. India perhaps is the world supplier on polished stone, slate tiles etc. Instead of ugly concrete tiles that are not properly leveled, they should use slate tiles, or stone tiles for the platform surface.

^^ glass would look great until it is vandalised.

There's three Lamborghinis in Chennai that i know of, two of which i've seen. Porsches are common. Just visit the Madras Motor Sports Club race track duriing the JK Tyre racing circuit championships or similar and you will see Chennai's finest exotics in one area.There was a supercar shootout betwen Porsche and Mercedes AMG cars at the MMSC track a few months ago. The 2nd round of the JK Tyre Trophy Circuit racing is this coming saturday at the Kari Motor Speedway in Coimbatore. Did you know that TN is the only state in India that has two racing circuits certified by the FIA for Formula III and Formula IV race cars and rally cars ofcourse!.

People walking on the roads is a big nuisance for traffic. A whole lane is lost which can otherwise increase the flow of traffic. Traffic police should enforce strict rules, if you are caught walking on streets instead of the side pavement there should be a fine. Of course this begs the question of a proper side pavement that is unencumbered by obstructions/holes/dangerous power transformers, dirt/grime/filth etc. Getting the side walks should be priority number one for the Local Govt and police ought to do their jobs.

Agreed .But the practical thing is maitaining a smaller city is much easier than maintaining such a big metro like Chennai ,which is twice the size than BNG and HYD .But this cannot be given as a lame excuse .We need to remove all those sands and graffitis ,posters .The Chennai corporation is slowly issuing ban of posters on main arterial roads.lets c how it works

Chennai district - 174SqKM - 43lakhs
Bangalore district - 2190 SqKm - 65lakhs

Even Chennai Metro boundary does not cross 1200SqKM.

Guess I didn't understand what you meant - you said there didn't seem to be ramps - that's why I said that's what the loops are for..

Not meaning to do a Shan Sara here and defend Chennai to the death, but if you look carefully, there are merging/segragating lanes for people entering/exiting the flyover..

The main arm (N-S direction in the posted pic) is actually 6-laned - but it widens to 8 lanes in the part between the loops - the extra lane that appears is, I guess, the merging lane..

Some of these pictures are from late 70s - such as the one showing LIC Building and Kodambakkam bridge as these two were built in the late 70s.
Looking at those pictures (there is a bullock cart in the LIC picture), one can see the sea change that has taken place between then and now. To say that Chennai has not changed since the eighties would be far fetched.

I don't know if you even understood what I had stated. My post was comparing Chennai of 70s to Chennai of today whereas the objection you are quoting is to comparison between cities.

My post is not out of place in a thread about Chennai Cityscape.

I don't understand why you couldn't get this basic difference before making your statement. Another thing you should understand is that what you had quoted is only a opinion and another person need not abide by it as one may have a different opinion about and neither is it an ultimatum from a mod. :ohno:

Boat rides were common in the 70s in cooum mostly around the adams road(tv tower) area and very popular during the trade fair(exhibition) time. If memory serves me right the boats were white on top with a red base.

After a gap of one year some work has began in IT corridor for service lanes etc so I think landscaping is also included in that.

^^ And it has been stopped now due to the monsoon season.. the rain doesn't seem to stop anytime soon, and all the ducts would have lot of water for at least few more weeks.
They always try to start the works just before the monsoon!!

I was puzzled by that comment too. Is he saying it in a positive way (that is the expectation is that projects will always be managed in a very efficient way in Chennai)? Also cold is probably cool.

You can check MRTS on Wiki. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mass_Rapid_Transit_System_%28Chennai%29) The MRTS stations generally have platforms in the 2nd floor except Chennai Beach, fort, park town and Velachery where they're on ground. And Perungudi is the only station with platform on 1st floor.

Its the MRTS and not Metro :D And I traveled yesterday on both suburban and MRTS after a long time. Noticed few improvements. EMUs were operated on all the 4 lines till beach. I saw Fast EMUs on the 3rd and 4th lines
