tim1807 November 13th, 2011, 03:58 PM ^^ It's not tiny at all. It looks small cuz it's just above the last double-height floor, but it's like 4.4m or something.
I know that it isn't a tiny panel, but I meant that it is tiny in comparing with other panels at other buildings.

jesuz1970 November 18th, 2011, 12:03 AM Very nice. Is the tallest build in South America?
the tallest in america latina mexico included
IngMarco November 18th, 2011, 01:03 AM Very nice. Is the tallest build in South America?
Yup, the only supertall in latin-america.
Stgocl November 18th, 2011, 05:08 PM Very nice. Is the tallest build in South America?
Not only in southamerica but in all latin america, and in whole South hemisphere. Q1 in Australia will be the second tallest in south hemisphere if not considering
the spire but only the building.
Building plus the spire, Q1 will still be the tallest in south hemisphere.
tim1807 November 18th, 2011, 06:07 PM And the worst is that you're right.
Alvaro Mardones November 18th, 2011, 07:13 PM I think Costanera Center is a better design

That isn't totally right, Melbourne's Eureka Tower is the Southern Hemisphere tallest building at its roof: 297m. Costanera reaches only 271m.
Miguel S November 18th, 2011, 09:21 PM ^^ So if you only consider the roof height the Eureka would be the tallest, if you consider the spire but no the antenna, then it would be the Costanera, and if you consider both, the spire and antenna, then it would be the Q1.
tim1807 November 18th, 2011, 09:29 PM If Costanera really is 271m, it is lower than Eureka and Q1, but by roof height, Costanera is second after Eureka and before Q1.

Q1 only has a spire not an antenna ;) So this building won't be the tallest in anyway ;)

No, Costanera will have 300m when its complete, it will be taller than Eureka.
Q1 only has a spire not an antenna ;) So this building won't be the tallest in anyway ;)
Yeap, but is a murky way to get height, kinda almost underhand. Anyway it's ok, it happened before with Petronas and Taipei 101.
It's just like this :tiasd:

http://assetsus1.wordansassets.com/wordansfiles/images/2010/10/31/53898/53898_340.jpg?1288579087
Well, jokes aside, in my very humble and unexpert opinion, and not trying to be nationalist, the max height of the spire of the Q1 is where the eliptic metalic structure ends. The rest is just a antenna, or a pole if you want to call it that way.
http://www.skyscraperpicture.com/q118.JPG
But again, that's just my opinion, I can be wrong, and I don't want to star an offtopic battle, so lets just say that the second place of a whole hemisphere isn't bad at all :)

I hope this answers your question:
Si, definitivamente it begins.
Tienen las bases para armar los vidrios en el costado nororiente de la torre.
In look la calidad de los vidrios y armaciones es superior en relación a los chinos.
Son 8, faltan +/- 6796.

Nope. They weren't happy with the quality of the original one, so they returned and got a new one from another manufacturer in the USA. pretty much what happened with the cladding of the base of the 1WTC, but it took even more time since it was already stored in the tower and being instaled, and also is the cladding of the whole thing.

Last but not least, remember that this building is earthquake resistant (already proven to withstand an 8.2 on the richter...). God forbid there is an earthquake in Panama City because there wouldn't be any buildings left standing. Not one. I'm just saying.

Because Costanera Center have a thread on the Chilean Forum... in that thread you can speak in Spanish because is a smaller forum... With all that thing of "English is a universal language" you have to speak it well to get understood...
En español chileno:
Porque Costanera Center tiene un hilo en el Foro Chileno... en ese hilo puedes hablar en español porque es un foro más pequeño... Con todo eso de "el inglés es un idioma universal" tienes que hablarlo bien para darte a entender...

That's just nonsense... if we're going to speak about skyscrapers on the official language of the project's country-of-origin, let's speak about Ryugyong Hotel in Korean, and Burj Khalifa in Arabic
Come on, English is not a difficult language, and sorry but that's the official language of the forum...
IngMarco December 10th, 2011, 10:11 PM ^^ That's not true, but since the "Supertall section" is an international forum people should write in english, you guys have the original thread on the chilean forum and there you are free to write in any language you want.

WonderlandPark December 13th, 2011, 05:47 PM Are they waiting for glass to go on sale before cladding the tower?
Miguel S December 14th, 2011, 02:38 AM ^^ If you look closely at the first office floor you'll notice that half of it is already cladded. It has been explained before that there was a delay on the curtain wall instalation because they returned the original one due to it's low quality.

I think that's fair, English may not be too difficult, but Spanish is way easier haha

One would expect that they would start with cladding much earlier so that most of it would be in place when the tower tops out.
Saves construction time.
nice update pics btw. :)
Eastern37 January 3rd, 2012, 12:37 AM ^^ They did start the cladding early but they didn't like the quality of the glass and sent it back. They've since got another company to manufacture the cladding hence how long it has taken them to start putting it onto the building :)

Modernizm January 27th, 2012, 03:14 PM I haven't been here in about a year and it would appear as if the process has slowed down quite a bit. By now I would have expected that most of the glass would have gone in. When one stands and watches the construction, one is hard pressed to see crews of workers. Is the project down to a skeleton crew? Is the funding trickling in? I hope to see this project finished sometime soon. Thus far, it looks great.

The glass is slowly starting to appear. They are focusing on the mall right now since it's due to open in April. The funding is secure, its just a Mammoth of a project (largest shopping mall in latin america, and tallest tower).
hmerlino January 27th, 2012, 04:32 PM The structure itself is nice, but it is so lonely up there.

The scope of the project is certainly impressive. Taken as a whole, the business corridor is developing very well. I walk through the streets of the area and I think any nation in the world would be happy to have some of the buildings that one can now find in Santiago. The Costanera Center is, or will be, the Eiffel Tower of Santiago (it's viewable from so many spots in the city and serves as a reference point). I'm not much for shopping malls, but I'll certainly check out the one at the CC, when I get a chance to do so.

cameronpaul February 4th, 2012, 02:00 AM Amazing city! Looks more like European city than South American though.
I can't think of any European city that looks remotely like Santiago actually. Maybe you're refering to the general infrastructure which looks of a higher quality than is generally found in South America. Buenos Airies most closely resembles a European city and believe it or not, apart from it's unique setting ,Rio de Janeiro also had a very European look before the authorities there decided to tear down most of the old city because they wanted something more "modern" Result: crap that looks decidedly "old fashioned" now!

ganghui February 6th, 2012, 10:58 AM Define "european"

I suppose he defines european as modern, fresh, clean, and developed. It's a well-known fact that europeans see Europe as the most developed part of the world, which of course is absurd as of today.
bulgerhoog February 7th, 2012, 09:23 PM I have been twice to Santiago, the centre gives indeed an "European" impression. I would call it "European" for the following reasons:
1. The climate is quite similar with countries like Spain or Italy.
2. Maybe because of the climate there is a lot of street life. Watching people on de plaza d'Armas, the shopping streets in the neighbourhood or being at Cerro (hill) Santa Lucia at sunset you get the impression that you are in a city like Madrid. Cities in Asia or the US have another feeling on the streets.
3. There is very good public transport and it's quite clean.
4. In the center of the city there are a lot of old European style buildings. In Asia these kind of buildings are disappearing very fast.
5. Costanera center is in the office building area of Santiago. Looks more like modern European suburbs like La Defense, although on street level I think it is nicer and greener. I liked the area very much, the scale is still human.
But anyway Hong Kong is quite different from Beijing, New York is not the same as Houston, Amsterdam is different from Athens. So what is Chinese, American or European anyway.
The most important thing is Santiago is a very pleasant city to stay for a while, and Chile is a very nice country to travel in. See for yourself:

fullofquestions February 9th, 2012, 08:01 PM gemomsen,
Brazilian cities are indeed fairly developed. The issue is that, when you are on the ground, they are not as clean, modern, and well thought out as Santiago (there is room for improvement though). I mean, the favellas next to the business district in SP or Rio are simply atrocious. This is not to say there aren't poor areas in Stgo. but, there is nothing close to the favellas in Brazil (any search of 'brazil and favellas' will produce some strong images).
Let's not even talk about the quality of construction. Stgo. clearly withstood an 8,2 on the Richter scale; Sao Paolo and Rio would be totally in ruins... Not sure about the details of the SP explosions but, I'm pretty sure most buildings in Stgo. would have withstood them... See, the issue is not about only the tall buildings and how they look from afar. The devil is in the details. I think that many people who have been to many countries agree that Stgo. does not have that level of 'crappy/less than great/unfinished/unsafe' feel as most Latin American cities do (including SP and Rio).
There are a ton of tall buildings in SP but they are not planned correctly. It simply doesn't look that great overall. There are some really nice areas although you are quickly reminded of the stench when you look elsewhere. It is what it is.
lezgotolondon February 9th, 2012, 11:47 PM no cladding yet? there were problems? I hope not
Mariosantiaguino February 10th, 2012, 12:44 AM ^^ No, no, the cladding is extremely slow, nobody knows why. You can see that something has come since the last photos

Muchachos!

We don't have pics of it on it's place yet, but at this moment it should be there.

cameronpaul February 12th, 2012, 10:02 PM I suppose he defines european as modern, fresh, clean, and developed. It's a well-known fact that europeans see Europe as the most developed part of the world, which of course is absurd as of today.
There is no continent on earth that can even begin to compare to Europe in it's wealth of architecture and diversity. Yes it has many downsides and some downright ugly places like anywhere, but having travelled extensively around our amazing world I can confidently say there is no place as fine as Europe and I would not choose to live anywhere else.

SANTIAGO. - In June 2006, began the work of the building project would be the icon of the country, with the tallest skyscraper in South America. Today, six years later, the Gran Torre Costanera Center reaches 300 meters, reaching its highest elevation.
The coronation is the raising of the structure which terminates at the stage of structural work, a process in which the crane takes the last piece of pure steel, which weighs 5,090 kilos of a total of 354 tons, and raises it to the dimension 300.
With 107,125 meters square and 63 floors, the building was designed by Alemparte, Barreda & Associates, together with Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects, creators of the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur, and executed by Salfa Corp.
The Gran Torre Costanera Center will be an office building, which will operate under the system of free plants and a surface area varies between 100 and 2,000 square meters. They will have the highest international safety standards and infrastructure, most notably HVAC variable volume with air handlers per floor; THERMAL UV and impact resistance of floor to ceiling, an average height of 4.10 meters per floor, making the 300 meters free interior, among other features.
Also, a new system of 24 elevators Schindler allow the free movement of people for mega real estate project, of which 19 are of the "double cab". The command of the elevators will be through a technique of next generation traffic management and access control, ID-based Schindler an access control mechanism of destinations, which transports users depending on the floor at that address. Thanks to this, you will maximize passenger capacity and optimize the movement in addition to saving energy and traveling time.
"The constructive challenge, the systems used and the working height, represented a huge challenge. This is not a common task. Work at these levels of heights was an unprecedented event in Chile and, why not say, Latin America, which We are proud, "said Fernando Zuniga Ziliani, general manager of Salfa Engineering and Construction.
The progress of the Great Tower, to date, required 1,621,401 hours man, with a peak of 405 workers Salfa direct and indirect. Currently 265 people work in construction and 92 Salfa Salfa Assembly. About 72,000 cubic meters of concrete and 16,000 tons of iron are part of the structural work of the mega project.
The coronation process involved the participation of 92 direct and indirect workers, including operators, preventers, builders and supervisors, in an estimated one hour.

fullofquestions February 16th, 2012, 01:01 AM Does anyone know why they constructed the last bit of the top out of steel as opposed to concrete? Are there any actual floor/floorspace towards the top? Just curious to know if this is a seismic construct or maybe something else...
Miguel S February 16th, 2012, 01:19 AM There will be an observation platformon top of the last concrete steel, within the steel structure, and a couple of mechanical floors on the last bit of the core, inside that structure too. I thing it was designedt that way because it would be the most gracefull way to finish the tower, and such a thin structure would be too weak, if not impossible to build using concrete.
diestro February 16th, 2012, 01:29 AM much time has passed and the building still looks ugly .... that now seems cemetery niches .... when you put their glass or so remain

Uy qué pena me da que esta torre no esté en tu ciudad.
I'm so so sad that this tower isn't built in your city :pet:
