I think it's a remarkable structure and a superb piece of engineering that's radically improved Portsmouth's image.

Beautiful. Certainly hasn't got as much press nationally as it should have.

Yes, i've yet to see it on the TV.

It's a great building, and tall, it's not like you can miss it.

I've never heard the name 'Spinnaker Tower' outside of SSC.

Yes, i've yet to see it on the TV.
Only time I've seen it on TV is when the Battle of Trafalgar re-enactment happened. Being one of the few major Portsmouth landmarks, they couldnt miss it out really.

Its opening was on the national news, but it should be in the advert for that french/british car, do you know the one? instead of blackpool tower.

Looks great. I have family down there, and shall check this out next time I'm in the area.
That last picture is very good indeed.

I drove past Portsmouth recently, and even from the distance I was you could still clearly see the tower, rising up above everything else. If only we'd had time to stop in at the city and go up it.

thats the woman who goes around pretending to be a monkey in the foreground, at least i think its her.

we have palm trees and quite a lot of sand down here so its not that far off being like dubai.. no camels though.:)

thats a nice picture that, where you see the cranes on the right is where a 28 level residential building is on its way up. its going to look impressive down here soon.

Looking at that shot, the potential for a great skyline is soooo there! Need a cluster of talls next to Spinnaker.

Nah the spinnaker tower looks best on its own. I would advocate more talls around the old tricorn area and around Commercial Road - that area needs smartening up.

I see the Portsea area slowly being regenerated with higher density. If there was to be a cluster - thats a class place to have one.

i noticed recently theres a 22 level residential going up in queens road, which is sort of portsea... noticed it in an estate agents in southsea.cant realy call it a tall but never mind..still looks quite pleasant

Do you mean the Queen Road which is in the naval dockyard or Queen Street which is the main thoroughfare between the Hard and Commercial Road?

I did notice that there was a plot of land by the university buildings in Portsea - was some old community centre and it was knocked down....but not sure exactly why a tower would go up there - its away from the main road.

There's something else tall going up on the Gosport side overlooking the marina:

queens street i think, not sure where queens road is. seemed a lot activity there the other day...

that gosport tower seemed to arrive from nowhere. you get a great view of the spinnaker from there actually, and you get to seee loads of warships that you cant see from portsmouth.

The Spinnaker really looks the best on its own, quite unusual design :) (http://www.aboutportsmouth.com/)

But what exactly is it for? Or is it just so people can admire it and go up it? I'm not complaining. It's a great structure.

Went up the Spinnaker Tower a few weeks ago - stunning building and great view from the top. Just a shame the weather was crap.

I'm not too keen on the entrance or the direct neighbours though - they kind of crowd it in and make it all look a bit naff. A building this good deserves much better than what looks like the entrance to a suburban ice rink, and it certainly shouldn't be surrounded by a cheap tacky Burger King and a goods yard.

Never heard of it until I got a postcard from my grandparents when they visited Portsmouth. This really has had too little media coverage for what it is.

It really has, it should be as iconic as the Angel of the North or other projects but the Media has seemingly ignored it.
It has had SOME coverage, for example the BBC News South Today thingy has it.

(sorry for the low res)
and ITV Meridian News had the Portsmouth Skyline as it's backdrop for ages (it might still have actually).

Additionally, copied and pasted straight from Wikipedia...

* The Magic Numbers played a live acoustic set at the Spinnaker Tower, Portsmouth on 20 February 2007.[14]

* The tower hosted the third of BBC Radio 1 DJ Annie Nightingale's live annual 'tower broadcasts' on 21 September 2006, featuring Santos and The Plump DJs, following similar shows from the BT Tower, London and the Television Tower, Berlin.[15]

* Spinnaker Tower hosted one of the regional events for the BBC's Children in Need events in 2006. This involved the mascot of the event, Pudsey Bear, abseiling down the structure.[16]

* Blue Peter recorded the 2006 Book of the Year Award inside the tower.

The tower has massively exceeded expected visitor numbers, the tower needed to attract 350,000 visitors a year to break even and Daily Mirror notably doubted it could. It now attracts around 600,000.
