You shouldn't forget that wealth distribution has an effect on this too. In a country with billionaires and very cheap labour, you have the best chance of finding extreme buildings. Rich countries that are more socialized and whose markets are subject to stronger regulations, don't tend to have such massive skylines. Germany is very rich for example, but we have few cities with what you could call skyscrapers.

The 2,000 foot height limit is stupid. But raising the limit is kinda moot when the US has only 1 supertall under construction at the moment. I'd rather have ten 1,000 footers u/c in the US than have one 2,000 footer u/c.

Yeah, but remember how long it takes us Americans to get anything done right....if we don't get started now we'll have to wait much longer.

If a developer or architect came along with plans for a 2,500 ft tall building somewhere in the US I'm sure they could apply for a waiver. As long as their was no safety hazard (such as a nearby airport), no objections from nearby residents or businesses, then the local government or FAA could make an exception.

There is no 2000ft. 'limit' in the US, you just need a special permission to build higher.

Several things: we have height retrictions for aircraft that prevent megatalls from getting built. Also, the costs of building tall skyscrapers in the U.S. are far greater than in areas like Dubai that do not have powerful trade unions. Tall buildings are economical and efficient up to a certain point but pretty much anything above 300 meters makes little sense economically. And because we built so many towers over the last 100 years, our cities simply do not need much additional product. While it's great to see some of these supertall vanity projects go up around the world, our own economic priorities lie elsewhere.

And this is still just the piling, we were too optimistic when we said the 2020 , with this spead around the 2030 is realistic :)

I'm just wondering why some skyscrapers' ground work get started and then go on hold... After a little they find a pilling contractor, although even the pilling isn't completed...

It seemed as if there were lots of contractors at the beginning of June, and now that even the pilling isn't completed, Burj Al Alam goes on hold again (it could also speed up, but I strongly doubt about this fact...)

I think this tower will definetly be built. But the question is when. Fortune Group must land tenants and a construction loan. So they have to seek financing from banks willing to bankroll the project. With the negative news coming out this week regarding Dubai World, banks are going to be very cautious.

What a venturous conjecture! Construction MUST be very very fast, cause the safety board tells "Project Completion Date 2010". So Burj Al Alam should top out before next summer. ;)

On the other hand, that board also literally proposes "Our target is zero accident" (what is kept so far), not "Our target is to build Burj Al Alam"... :D ;)

A lot of optimism and belief in Dubai. It is On Hold, not cancelled. Everything happens with money and nothing happens in bad economic times. However they surge in good times. That is what maintains my optimism.

I am an owner and i can state my communication with the company so far. They re saying that they are in negotiatons for the main constructor and they will link the payment plans of the owners with the progress of construction. Of course we have been hearing that for almost a year but who knows. Even i don't know what will happen and i have invested in this. Hopefully your optimism for Dubai as mine will translate also for this project. I am saying this because Dubai is one thing and a private company's project is another.

For that Bridge, Sungwon, South Korea, they weren't paid for a bit so they stoped. Now back on track for the bridge,,

It is normal all around the globe that owner's payment plan is linked to the construction progress. I think you are seeing way more into this than it really is.

Do they really need a whole bus for those two? Dubai and its overkill...

The company does not work only on that project, there are others as well. Think of it as a urban bus with a number of stops and final destination to company accommodation compound.

We will be lucky if this starts by this Autumn. This building has a lot of support, but not enough money. Eventually it will be built.

Where did you find these information ? Are you bellieving Dubai will get a good pace next year ? Or are you sure about that ?
I expect so but South Korea has returned to its old pace, that one before Enconomic Crisis, but not Dubai...

Horrible news. I really liked this one. It would've fit in so well near the Burj Khalifa.

What id like to see now is a more individualized approach to building here now. Up until this point the entire city has been one big rendering. Other cities go through changes over time and evolve into what they are now. Id like to see this with dubai now.

Anyways I want to see this built. It is one of the most well designed towers in the city and truly has the height and beauty to be built. The location is great too.

I kinda assumed Dubai would just keep on erecting supertall after supertall. Maybe developers will focus more on cheaper shorter towers and fill out the skyline? That wouldn't be bad for the city either I suppose.

I expect so ! But when we keep in mind that China has re begun to build supertall and continue to approve new projects, like in India, we could think that are bad news for Dubai !

During the 1929 Krach and shadow's years after, the Empire State Building was built and open in 1931 (410 days of construction for 381m high). So I'm not really sure it could be good information for Dubai.

By late 2012, I'd say the Pentominium will be close to finished, and at least topped out. As well as Damac Heights (hmm... maybe). Pretty much everything else will be complete.

So I expect "On Hold" projects will be "U/C", or it will be boring here...
