A worker puts finishing touches on a shoulder bag made of recyclable election campaign materials of senator and presidential candidate Benigno 'Noynoy' Aquino Jr. , at the NGO Risen Christ Cooperative of Smokey Mountain in a slum area of Tondo, metro Manila May 20, 2010.

My comment wasn't because of Noynoy Aquino(political), nagkataonlang.

I am all for TANGKILIKIN ANG SARILING ATIN... PROUDLY PHILIPPINE MADE...
but IMO we have support those who are trying to make quality products,
hindi yung low quality and basta basta lang ang kalidad.

If you buy these poorly made or low quality Philippine made products then it is
tantamount to putting your seal of approval on those products, then before you
know it all of the philippine made products manufacturers will follow suit and
voila!!!! Lahat na ng MADE in the PHILIPPINES will become LOW QUALITY! IMHO!

imported items used to be of higher quality and sometimes low cost.

if you try comparing the price of local corned beef by the big brand as compared to that brazilian corned beef. the brazilian canned corned beef is cheaper and better quality

it changes now.

so now i buy local..my mobile phone is cherry mobile, and thinking about buying a tcl lcd tv.. its cheaper than foreign brands

Hmmm...meron bang local drum cymbals company dito sa atin? Un quality nya ay in-par with imported brands parang Zildjian at Sabians? Kung meron, sariling atin nalang bibilhin ko.

So far though, ang made in phils ko palang nabibili ay un mga underwears ko.....sarap naman suotin at komportable din :hilarious

Bihira ang locally made items sa Divisoria, pati nga sa ilalim ng tulay ng Quiapo, puro imported, pero maraming pa ring native made products from the provinces.

Bigla akong nakonsensya... I don't watch Filipino Movies in theater/cinema, or buy original DVD/CD. I consider it a waste of money, pag may nagustuhan na Filipino movie, I go to pirated copies. Tapos ginagastusan ko ang mga foreign movies para mapanood ko sila in 3D or iMax. Bumibili ako ng original copies nila in DVD. Can you blame me for that?

Bumibili din ako before pero depende sa tao yan. Kung may pera, hala bili...

Myphone is pinoy...

Ang kaibahan din ng Brazilian Corned Beef is that and lasa has a dry taste and texture. Pinoy corned beef is moist, wet...

Asia's surprising shopping capital (http://www.smh.com.au/travel/asias-surprising-shopping-capital-20100408-ruby.html)

http://images.smh.com.au/2010/04/09/1301324/Manila-Shopping-Centre-420x0.jpg
At Glorietta shopping centre, prices are slightly higher, but still much cheaper than Australia.

The Philippines is known for many things: beautiful beaches, overseas workers and the multitude of shoes owned by former first lady Imelda Marcos.

Less known to the Western World, however, is that the archipelago is a shoppers' dream, the home of three of the world's 10 largest malls.

Shopping, along with eating and basketball, is an important national pastime. Filipinos take their malling so seriously that it is practically their only destination every weekend.

Many of the malls in the metro Manila area are minicities, with department stores, supermarkets, theatres, spas and even an Olympic-size skating rink. Christian and Muslim religious services also are held at the malls.

Air-conditioned malls are a welcome escape from the tropical heat and humidity. Families and friends frequently spend entire days hanging out at one mall.

It is easy for English-speaking tourists to shop in Manila because the language is widely spoken. At flea markets, feel free to haggle.

The best deals are clothes, shoes and accessories. It would not be difficult to find a pair of jeans for $US5 ($A5.40) to $US7 ($A7.55) and summer dresses for less than $US10 ($A10.80). Bags, belts and high-heeled shoes can run you as little as $US5 ($A5.40), even at department stores.

It's tougher to find bargains in electronics because they have to be imported from the United States, Japan and elsewhere.

When shopping for clothes, be aware that sizes tend to run small to fit smaller Asian frames, although that is changing as fast food is making waistlines bigger.

Few shoes larger than a size 10 are available. Cotton fabrics also tend not to be pre-washed, so they will shrink in the dryer.

So that souvenir for your teenage son - "My parents went to the Philippines and all I got was this T-shirt" - could end up as a shirt for your nine year old.

Be sure to ask about the return policy before you buy. Most places will not give a refund unless the product is clearly defective. It is good to carry cash, because credit cards are not as widely accepted, and ask for any kind of receipt and keep it. It is your warranty for returns or exchanges.

Besides shopping, another bargain stands out at the mall: going to the movies. New releases hit Manila fairly quickly and ticket prices are about $US3 ($A3.25).

For a more upscale experience, the Platinum Cinema at Gateway Mall in the Cubao neighbourhood of metro Manila lets you watch movies while lounging on a La-Z-Boy armchair. A movie ticket costs $US7 ($A7.55), and includes popcorn and soft drink.

Several malls have buffet restaurants as well as food courts, and you can get your fill of Filipino food as well as other Asian and Western cuisines.

Here is a list of shopping centres to explore.

SM MALLS: For shopaholics, a must-do is the chain of SM malls that dot the city, such as Megamall. They truly are full-day destinations. You can start your day with breakfast at a Starbucks, shop for groceries, grab an Asian buffet lunch, get a hair cut and a massage, then relax with the family at the cinema - all without leaving the mall.

The SM Mall of Asia facing Manila Bay is the third-largest mall in the world with a gross leasable area of 390,000 square metres, according to a 2009 ranking by Forbes. Megamall, at 330,000 square metres, and SM City North Edsa, at 280,000 square metres and expanding, are the other two Filipino malls among the global top 10.

GLORIETTA AND GREENBELT: In the swanky part of Manila, called Makati, you will find the Glorietta and Greenbelt shopping complexes. Prices here are higher than in SM, but still a lot cheaper than similarly luxurious stores in Australia.

Foreign business executives and Western tourists are more frequently sighted here, because the area is surrounded by five-star hotels and is in the heart of Manila's financial centre. After shopping, head for "The Spa" at Greenbelt 1, where an hour-long massage can cost just $US20. ($A21.60).

TRINOMA: Short for "triangle north of Manila," Trinoma is a sprawling shopping complex in the Quezon City neighbourhood of metro Manila. It is a rival to the SM malls and anchored by the Landmark department store, which has slightly lower prices and a wider selection than SM stores.

DIVISORIA AND 168: Tourists who want a more local, flea-market shopping experience, and even better prices, can head to Divisoria and the 168 shopping area. Shops here cater to the working class, or simply folks who want to pinch pennies. Kitchen items, underwear, clothes, shoes, fabric, designer knockoffs abound. It is not hard to find items from $US1 ($A1) to $US3 ($A3.25). But be prepared to fight crowds, and watch out for pickpockets and purse-snatchers.

Hehehehe..Robinson's and Gaisano's were not included.

:ohno:

What needs to be done is to erase the typical stereotype that Philippine made products are inferior than others. Heck, the Hitachi hard drive I bought for my computer is made in the Philippines and it didn't let me down for 4 years without reformatting since then. Made in China products are crappier in quality compared to Philippines and should be shunned as much as you can. They're not only durable - they have tons of safety issues that could endanger your health and even your own life. I can trade a cheaper made in China for a more expensive Philippine made product any time.

I noticed that Filipinos in general love to dwell on trivialities (where it comes from) rather than on things that really matters (type of material used, specs, over-all product reviews, company reputation, etc..) in purchasing even the most mundane products.

The problem with The Philippine movie industry is not just piracy but lack of originality and creativity. Alot of Filipino movies I've seen are either too cheesy or are Filipino versions of Hollywood films.

But there are alot of good Filipino movies that I saw. Some of the most notable would be

Himala - Nora Aunor
Bad Boy - Robin Padilla
Pacifico Guevarra alyas Dilinger - Raymart Santiago
Batas ng 45 - FPJ
Gangland - Ryan Eigenmann
Madame X - Ina Raymundo
Istokwa - Mark Anthony Fernandez

The mid 90s and before were at the strongest peak in Philippine cinema. In fact the country's movie industry rivaled Mumbai during those times.

Piracy is the problem of the Philippine entertainment industry and its not just The Philippines but also in other countries/cities including HK. Even in the US some stalls sell pirated DVDs like the area within Canal St. in Manhattan. And why are the feds not taking any action, because they get bribed and we are talking about New York City.

The Philippines but need more creative minds in the entertainment industry. I've seen alot of Pinoy advertisements and some of them are among the most impressive in Asia. I'm sure they can do the same with motion pictures.

Philippine products simply meet international standards and safety. Durability is a value added package that came along by no accident. I never heard of any massive product recalls about Philippine-made products unlike China's melamine scare, lead paint on Barbie dolls, building insulation materials that emits dangerous fumes and etc.
