10/10.. My favorite skyscrapers. Simple, elegant, they soar and are a height lover's dream. They are in your face, New York style. I love it..no setbacks, pure height.

9.5/10

Enormous, Soaring, Simple. No other building can match that effect and multiply that by 2.

They are of such scale and the closely spaced columns sometimes make them seem mysterious. In any case, these buildings were significant and powerful enough that I knew about them way before I got interested in skyscrapers.

But I always felt something ominous about them..

Absolutely mind blowing combination of size and height. The detailing and finish is nice close up but ugly and boring from a distance. Disrespectful to the existing New York skyline and streetscape, not because of the height but because of the unimaginative overall design and massing.

Brutal, dominating and uninviting. Unfortunate, and ultimately tragic, qualities for a development which would become one of the symbols of New York and America.

5/10

I gave it a 9, not because of the way it appears from the outside, but for it's advanced engineering, as it was very important to the advancement of the skyscraper technology. It was the first skyscraper built not to use any masonry as all skyscrapers had done before. The elevator system was very clever, as the towers were treated as three seperate sections with only two express elevators running the whole height of the building. The method of moving columns to the outside walls to lower wind force on the towers was very clever.

So dominating and massive.

How many buildings have a floor with an acre of floorspace at 1350ft? They were so well designed, they withstood the plane impacts and that is really something.

In no way do I see it as ugly.

RIP WTC.

For those who call them boxy, ugly, crappy and more I wonder how many of you actually visited them, had the WTC experience and got familiar with them. I'll bet you anything, that if they were built in your city and you glanced at them everyday and got used to them, the score you gave the Towers would at least double.

I use to work in Tower 1 North Tower in Cantor Fitzgerald Bank on the 102 floor. I quit my job a few months before the collapse but my best friends stayed there to support their families. I lost all of them. And so did their families. I swear, these were some of the coolest buildings in the world and everybody loved them. Contrary to what the man from Indianapolis said, we loved these towers before the attack. Really, we just didn't realize what we lost.

How can you rate those things a 10? They're big, that's about it. I bet that if they weren't destroyed by the jihad-morons they wouldn't get so many 10's. Another reason why I dislike religion, they lead to false ratings of dull buildings! ;)

They're designed by architects without any fantasy, but who just wanted to build something big. There are numerous buildings in NY which are a lot more impressive in my opinion. Empire State, Chrysler, Woolworth, etc... Even Flatiron is more impressive.

I rate it a 7, because of the size the towers had.

6.5/10 but prolly should have given it +1 or 1.5...

the fact that they were destroyed doesn't give it plus marks or lower marks. it's soaring, at ground level this building would have been  but from some of those pics, it looks rather dull, flat, and without taste

I lived in NYC for a time. I used to like the building because it was a good punctuation mark for the NY skyline. However, the buildings themselves represented the dullness of 60s modernism. Important as far as being symbols of the nation's wealth, but architecturally, blah. Certainly they were engineering marvels, but aesthetically, they were nothing too spectacular.

And just because they were destroyed by terrorists doesn't make them any better.

Hmmm...the Twins seem to have become more popular since they were destroyed.

7/10 - They had breathtaking, in-your-face height, they could play off of each other, and they did wonderful things with the light - if any buildings were ever made for the light, these were. That's why there was, indeed, something proud and splendid about them...

BUT...they were boxy (I've heard them called the packing boxes the Empire State and Chrysler buildings came in) and flat-topped, which isn't quite my favorite style of architecture. (OK, I admit I'm severely biased towards Art Deco) I've also heard that the plaza was unpleasant and barren, and that the superblock cut off the west side of lower Manhattan from the rest of the city.

However, I really wish I could have seen them, and there are still thousands of reasons why I wouldn't mind having every boxy inch of them back....:(

sorry to hear about that great sky.

i read about cantor fitzgerald - something like half of the employees of the whole company were wiped out on the 11th. their other main office is in london and i read some interviews in the british press about the employees working for 3 days solid to keep the company going despite what had happened.

saw these towers on the monday (10th sept) and touched them on the previous saturday in september 2001. i was going to go up them on the evening of the 11th - i bought a citypass and was going to go up them around 7pm.

anyway back to the rating....they were just massive...huge buildings and an incredibly simple design by a japanese architect....

he said that the buildings were built for peace in 1973....i think minoru yamasaki is dead now but he'd be gutted at what happened to them...

i took loads of photos before of them during the day.....just gutted that they arent here anymore really :(

id give em 10/10 for the sheer urban spectacle they created with the world financial towers in the foreground from the hudson. new yorkers must still be shellshocked.

the twins are truly the most powerful, soaring skyscrapers ever built by mankind. it's simple, yet it conveys such a strong message of world trade and world peace. who cares if they are boxes? i can't imagine how a building of any other style can be worthy to be nyc's world trade center.

even as the twins experience the horrors of the final moment of their lives, their strength allowed them to stand up long enough for the great majority of the workers inside them to escape. no other building built before the attacks can ever boast of a finer performance of its strength.

we must rebuild the twins, greater and better than the original, so we can pay tribute to the greatness that they had done on nyc and the mark they left in the city during their short but eventful lives and at the sametime allow the power of the twins to live on for generations.

9.5 (too bad i never saw them, and i fear that i might never have the chance to see them in the skyline again  )

9/10. Powerful, immense buildings which appeared as a gateway to New York. Who can forget that scene in Home Alone II when Kevin arrives at the WTC plaza and gazes up in awe at the towers? A later shot shows an aerial view of him taking photos from the outdoor observation deck.

I was in New York as a young kid and only had a glimpse of the towers from the ferry to the Statue of Liberty, and 8 years later I returned. This time I could only see empty sky. Last week I saw a book in the bookstore called "New York New York: Images of a City" where a photographer went back to all the vantage points he took pictures of the WTC from, and every page has a present photo showing the same view without the buildings.

8.0 for size alone. Never liked these towers because when they first went up they totally clashed with the old classic downtown towers. The World Financial Center helped, and so did the antenna on the North Tower. It gave it some style at the top.
And when the towers fell, nobody ever mentioned that the North Tower was the 3rd tallest structure in the world (1,728 feet) with antenna. If you're going to count spires, you need to count antennas. This one surely helped the look of the building.

In second grade, classmates would always ask the trick question "which is taller: the World Trade Center or the Twin Towers?"

If there had been just one, it would have never flown. They're ugly, but somehow, two ugly buildings was better than one. I never despised them, but they weren't my favorite buildings in the world either. Now I just miss them.

While these buildings were technically very advanced for the 1970s, architecturally they were somewhat boring. Despite the awe-inspiring height, they do not truly soar into the sky like the Chrysler or ESB. I agree that is was fortunate that two towers were built instead of one - that would have been the ultimate in banality.

I have tried to give my opinon on the twin towers as buildings alone without letting the tragedy of 9/11 cloud my emotions. Whatever my views of the buildings, I so wish they were still there, dominating and defining the NY skyline.

By the way, Minoru Yamasaki also designed One Woodward building (1962) in Detroit, Michigan. While it is only 32 stories high, it is similar to the WTC buildings in having the very narrow, tall windows.

None in the world could surpass the massive size and magnificience of those two towers, those two were the bullies of all skyscrapers.

Definately iconic - both when they were there and after they'd gone. There was something about them that was a bit, well, bland and boring. It's just the sheer size of them that inspired awe. 7.5/10

I have the worlds tallest (skyscraperpage) poster from a while back that include the WTC....Yes Sears is taller.. and a couple of others slightly out reach the Trade Centre but when you look at the profiles all lined up the Twin Towers were the dominant, simple yet the most powerfully bold buildings in the whole wide world ! Combined with their lower Manhattan location even the mighty Dubai tower U/c. wont have the visual impact that these factors combined. I value the fact that I have stood atop WTC 2 and treasure my photos and memories of NYC. pre 9/11. (July2000) I would like to post my pics.?

Still can't believe how long ago 9/11 was. It seems like yesterday when all the terrible chaos happened. I can still remember what I did that day and don't think i'll forget it.
I have a huge picture of them at night in my room. I think it was taken by Ralf Uicker or something like that.
I gave them a 9/10 just because of the sheer size of them and the domineering power that they had. Would of been a 10 but I don't think they look as impressive from far away. It was these buildings that made me a fan of architecture (especially skyscrapers) and why I chose construction to study after school and at university.

10/10 definetly. No other buildings in history attracted so much attention to one city. They defined the skyline of NY and yes they were boxy probaly the most boxy ever but thier boxiness still made NY what it was NYC defiently loses something with them gone.

10/10 Way more than an "ugly block of concrete." To this day, 2007, no larger or taller skyscraper exists without tapering or using setbacks; the Twin Towers reinvented the skyscraper, just like the New WTC will. The old and New WTC are proof of America's palpable and unyielding dominance.

nothing but the sears is just boring just like the store

not if there was 2 of them then that would be diffrent and it is hard to make a building thats black really stand out and look nice the sears dose have its issues with that but its not a horrble building i just think that thw wtc was alot better

sorry i gave a 4.5
i never liked them before the attacks, and never after either

they were too plain and i didn't like the facade at all, you couldn't really see windows at all and it looks like a stolid wall to me

the only thing i find impressive about them is their proximity and height.

They would appear completely different buildings depending if you looked at them from close or far away. There were a lot of interesting details and at the same time they were so simple. A 10, for the plaza, for the towers, for the lower buildings, for the superblock, for their greatness.
