View Full Version : TOKYO 東京 | Tokyo Sky Tree 東京スカイツリー | 634m | Open
coldstar March 14th, 2006, 11:28 AM Last night, different kinds of news put the high rise lovers in Tokyo in disarray.
First, Lotte (HQ: Shinjuku) unveiled an mazing plan of constrcuting 'Tokyo World Tower' (1008m !!) in Toshimaen Amuzement Park in Nerima ward.
But a few hours later, TV stations in Tokyo finally approved of 'Sumida Tower' which had been proposed by Sumida ward and Tobu Railway Company (HQ: Mukoujima). Press media simultaneously released the news that Sumida Tower had bidden on New Tokyo Tower project.

Digital Terrestrial Broadcasting and the Role of the New Tower
In July 2011, the current analog broadcasting will end and a complete transition made to digital broadcasting.
Five commercial stations and NHK took this as a turning point to advance preparations towards digital broadcasting from a TV tower with a height of around 600m and decided on the Sumida/Taito area as the site for construction of the tower. In addition, for "one-segment broadcasting (one-seg)," a digital broadcasting service for mobile devices that was launched in April 2006, it is ideal to have transmissions from a height that is not very vulnerable to the forest of super high-rise buildings that stand at heights of around 200m in downtown Tokyo. Expectations are also on the tower to serve the role of a tower equipped with disaster prevention features.

avalon March 15th, 2006, 12:10 AM No way, wh y such a futuristic design.....They promote its location as "the origin of Japanese tradition". Then why do they need to build such a futuristic building, which distort the tradition in the area.
godblessbotox March 15th, 2006, 05:42 AM why are they going to dedicate so much land to a tall antenna with a tiny shopping center base?
LordMarshall March 15th, 2006, 07:23 AM looks cool, whats the price tag on that bad boy?

Frungy March 16th, 2006, 08:59 AM I dunno if this is going to make shitamachi a "trendy" area. Right now nobody says "Hey, lets go shopping in Asakusa" unless they're looking to buy Japanese souvenirs for folks overseas. Most commuters don't even use Tobu's Asakusa terminal because it doesn't connect with anything- they change at Kita-Senju.
So I'm not really sure what they're going for here...

hkskyline March 22nd, 2006, 05:33 AM Short reign for world's tallest building: Tokyo tower to be completed in 2009
Times of London
18 March 2006
TOKYO - The world's tallest building will get the go-ahead next week, but the 610-metre-high (2,100-foot) Sumida Tower will hold the lofty title for only a few weeks.
The shining steel structure will soar above the Asakusa tourist district of central Tokyo after approval is granted by the city authorities.
But even if construction of the tower were to start Sunday, it would enjoy only a brief reign at the top of the world: its projected completion date in 2009 is very close to that of the Burj Dubai, which will be at least 80 metres taller.
The Japanese tower, laden with the satellite dishes and transmitters of six TV stations, will retain, for the time being, the crown of "world's tallest communications tower."
It will surpass the CN Tower in Toronto by 57 metres.
Regional jealousy has played a central role in plans for the tower itself.
Tokyo, conscious of its Asian rivals such as Taipei and Kuala Lumpur with far taller skyscrapers, has been growing increasingly anxious to get its Sumida Tower scheme underway and re-establish Japan's reputation as a country of spectacular engineering projects. But a long and bitter feud between rival districts along the city's famous Sumida river vying to host the tower has delayed a final decision.
Bidders in the Taito and Saitama districts spent much of their energies trying to persuade the panel of business leaders and professors that the other's location is more earthquake-prone.
The tower's function as a communications hub means that its destruction would cause extreme chaos.
Next week the consortium of six television companies behind the project will hand victory to Taito. The area is close to the Sensoji Temple, the Asahi Beer Hall and other popular Tokyo tourist attractions. It is, say the judges, more likely to attract fee-paying visitors in Taito than it would in Saitama.
The main company behind the project is Tobu Railway, which expects to shoulder most of the approximately 50 billion yen ($500 million Cdn) in construction costs.
coldstar March 22nd, 2006, 06:21 AM We have never referred to New Tokyo Tower as world's tallest tower.
No Japanese expect that New Tokyo Tower would be titled 'world tallest', since we all know much higher towers/skyscrapers have been constructed/proposed in Moscow, Guangzhou, Chicago, Seoul,.. aside from Dubai.
Mosaic March 22nd, 2006, 08:21 AM I like it very much, Tokyo deserves one.
Manila-X March 24th, 2006, 04:36 AM Honestly I don't like the idea of having this tower dominate Tokyo's skyline. The city already has one dominating freestanding structure which is the Tokyo Tower. If this is contructed/completed, then the city will have two which to me isn't that impressive.
I prefer having an iconic skyscraper with the same height as The Sumida Tower rather than seeing two freestanding structures.
hkskyline March 24th, 2006, 05:28 AM Tokyo has a number of famous views, and most of them don't involve skyscrapers, such as the Rainbow Bridge view and Ginza. Having two icons in the skyline shouldn't be a bad thing. They're not close enough to be twins.
Mosaic March 24th, 2006, 10:44 AM ^^^Yeah!! and one more thing is that Tokyo tower is not tall enough to be a great solely landmark.
Nightsky April 5th, 2006, 09:31 PM Great news! This is my (not so very good) drawing of it:

onmyoji May 16th, 2006, 05:26 PM New Tokyo tower to pump 47.3 billion yen to local economy annually
(Kyodo) _ A new 610-meter-high radio and TV transmission tower to be built in Tokyo's Sumida Ward will likely pump 47.3 billion yen a year to the local economy, a think tank said Wednesday.
The tower -- higher than the 553-meter CN Tower in Toronto, Canada, so far the world's tallest structure -- is expected to draw Japanese and foreign visitors to the new attraction in Sumida Ward, according to the Dai-ichi Life Research Institute.
Even before its completion in 2011, the 50-billion yen tower will likely add a total of 95.4 billion yen in sales of goods and services during the four-year construction period that will commence in 2008, the think tank said.
"The local economy is likely to receive strong stimulus from a likely surge in the number of foreign tourists and other expected results due to the combined tourist-attracting effects of the new tower and nearby long-time tourist spots like Asakusa and Ryogoku," it said.
The think tank forecasts 3 million Japanese and foreign visitors will visit the Sumida tower a year. The 333-meter-high Tokyo Tower, located in Minato Ward, attracts 2.6 million visitors a year.
Annual revenues from admission fees, transmission fees to be paid by Japan Broadcasting Corp. and five commercial TV broadcasters, hotel accommodation, as well as other sales to be directly induced by the new tower are projected at 29.7 billion yen. ADVERTISEMENT
On top of the revenues, the tower in Sumida Ward will induce such indirect economic effects as incomes to be reaped by financial institutions and the food industry that will feed its visitors, it said.
Apart from the tower's building costs, the construction will induce secondary effects for industrial segments related to its construction, including those for manpower agencies that will mediate in dispatching construction workers and for construction material makers like steelmakers, it added.

QUESTION!
are any historical japanese buildings being demolished for these steel eifiel tower like structure? The location for this new tower is where Tobu Railway had a freight railway station, which was demolished when they stopped freight railway service.
Besides its short history (400+ years), Tokyo was destroyed many times by fires, earthquakes and a bombing, and originally there are few historical buildings in Tokyo.
For old buildings, see Kyoto. Not a single high-rise stands there.

Tokyo Tower to add 100 meters
Operator fears broadcasters will move to new tower
Nippon Television City Corp. is preparing to make Tokyo Tower higher in what is being viewed as a desperate bid to prevent TV broadcasters from switching to a much taller transmitting tower planned to be built in Sumida Ward.
The operator of the 333-meter landmark, which will be vying with a new 610-meter competitor dubbed "New Tokyo Tower," has drafted a plan to extend its digital broadcasting antenna by 80 to 100 meters.
To boost the height of Tokyo Tower's antenna by 100 meters, however, the structure itself will have to be lengthened by 20 meters, which would cost around „4 billion and be fully covered by the company, it said.
The new radio and TV transmitter tower to be built in Tokyo's Sumida Ward is slated to become the world's tallest structure when it begins operating in 2011.

Copy paste or just write it.
Just make sure that you have installed East Asian languages in windows.
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/int_pr_install_languages.mspx?mfr=true
Then you have to change the language into Japanese in the language bar.
And then you can write Japanese、you have to write it in hiragana, then you can choose the kanji when press the space bar.

MarceloFreire January 10th, 2008, 08:04 AM This 600 something high tower causes me such a nostalgic feeling.
It is like the 20's, when vanguard movements called modernist, like RUssian constructivism, Italian FUturism and so on, picture the future. The design of this tower seems to me to be an old new design. It is really a shame, as I wish it could follow the Cocoon tower's new approach of contemporary architecture in Tokyo. In brief, it is really ugly a structure for me. However, let us wait untill it is done, I might be surprised in a very good way though.

This says that the tower's height may be extended 700 metres? I don't know if it can be that high. I prefer it to stay at 610 metres.
Ttokyo April 27th, 2008, 04:47 AM that refers to Tokyo Tower and not New Tokyo tower!
coldstar June 10th, 2008, 02:26 PM Today, Tobu Railway Co. makes the announcement of the name of "the New Tokyo Tower". It is Tokyo Sky Tree :toilet:

FML June 10th, 2008, 06:57 PM For decades, they've been using all the money they earned by Tojo Line to develop Tobu Main Line area, which has been proved as nothing but futile. Well, from June 14, when Fukutoshin Line opens, they finally start to invest a little on Tojo Line as well (such as TJ Liner), but I guess it's rather too late. People north to Kawagoe are already abandoning the rail (like those in north Saitama/Gunma), because of its poor service. :ohno:
hkskyline June 12th, 2008, 08:00 AM World's tallest communications tower to be 'Tokyo Sky Tree'
10 June 2008
Agence France Presse
Developers planning the world's tallest self-supporting communications tower, which will dominate the skyline of the Japanese capital, Tuesday named it the "Tokyo Sky Tree."
Construction is set to begin next month in the city's less developed eastern side on the 610-metre (2000-foot) tower, slated to be completed in 2011 when Japanese broadcasters switch entirely to digital communications.
"We have an image of the new tower attracting people from around the world to create new culture and a town friendly to the environment," said Kinya Miyazuki, head of the company managing the project.
"The name of the new tower was officially decided to be Tokyo Sky Tree," he told a news conference. A nationwide poll was held to choose the name.
The Tokyo Sky Tree will overshadow landmarks in the capital's upscale western parts, including the 333-metre Tokyo Tower, which has served as a symbol of Japan's post-war miracle since 1958.
It will host two observation decks -- at 350 metres and 450 metres above ground -- restaurants and office space at a former freight shunting yard along the Sumida river.
"The name gives an impression of a new town striving towards the sky while adapting to the natural environment," said Sumida ward's mayor, Noboru Yamazaki, one of the members of the name selection committee.
The Tokyo Sky Tree will top the 553-metre CN Tower in downtown Toronto.
KTHI-TV Tower in North Dakota stands at 629 metres but is supported by cables.
The world's tallest structure is the Burj Dubai, which is expected to reach 900 metres when completed early next year in the Gulf emirate.

ukiyo March 6th, 2010, 10:43 AM Tokyo Sky Tree: Room with a view
http://www.tokyoreporter.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/tokyo_sky_tree.jpg
TOKYO (TR) – Tall, steel-framed television transmission towers are not generally thought of as being attractive neighbors.
Yet real estate firm Sky Court is hoping that Tokyo Sky Tree, now under construction in the capital’s eastern Sumida Ward, will convey a different image.
The company has taken out newspaper advertising space to promote the units within its Sky Court Oshiage Ichibankan complex as investment properties due to their proximity to the future 634-meter-tall structure, which will make it the world’s tallest free-standing tower when it is completed next year.
“With a location in the center of the city and nearby public transportation, there are positive prospects for further developments in the area targeting single people seeking a lifestyle centered on convenience,” said company representative Tsutomu Sugiura in a dispatch to The Tokyo Reporter.
The 49 apartments range from 21 to 25 square meters and are priced between 19.8 million and 24.2 million yen. The property is located mere minutes from the white structure, presently at the 303-meter mark and draped in green construction netting. The newspaper ads estimate that one of the mid-size units will fetch roughly 68,700 yen per month on the current rental market.
Once finished, a mixed-use development will occupy an area at the tower’s base, which will front Kitajukken River and Shinsui Park.
Indeed, the area may be centrally located from a real estate perspective, as Sky Court says, but from a technology point of view the position of Tokyo Sky Tree, about 8 kilometers from the city’s financial district at Tokyo Station, is somewhat remote to eliminate the impact of the city’s skyscrapers on transmission signals.
Tokyo Tower has been a landmark in the metropolis since its establishment in 1958. The transmitter will largely be taken out of commission when Japan’s broadcasters switch to digital next year and begin utilizing Tokyo Sky Tree.
The urban land price index fell by 7.8 percent in the first half of last year for Japan’s six biggest cities, according to the Japan Real Estate Institute. But Sky Court believes the Tokyo Sky Tree, designed in part by famed architect Tadao Ando, is a highly positive selling point.
“It is natural to think that Tokyo Sky Tree will reach the same symbolic level of Tower Tokyo,” Sugimoto said. (C.J.)

What do we see there in the back?
It hasn't passed the Tokyo Tower in height though, that will happen on Monday (03/29) as announced in the media.
http://sankei.jp.msn.com/economy/business/100326/biz1003261723033-n1.htm
Monday the new official height will be 338m.
But first with the new part on top it became 333m, the same height as the Tokyo Tower.

But we can see the 1st signs that the current levels of the tower body won't be visible because of the pod. The big steel tubes are much more basic and aren't white anymore. And they also halved the number of tubes that make the outer circle of the tower body.

Momo1435 April 11th, 2010, 10:16 PM That model is cute :P. Momo chan now the sky tree will slow down right? :( Because of pod
It will grow to 370 meters this month, that's still pretty fast. But then it will only grow 20 meters in 2 months if it going to reach 390 meter in June, that's indeed because of the pod. And in the 2nd half of this year it should grow another 110 meters to reach the top of the tower body, that's also only about 20 meters per month. But that's still fast compared with the last 134 meter, when they will jack up the spire from out of the core. Next year we won't be able to see such obvious fast progress on a daily basis like we did up to now.

Momo1435 May 24th, 2010, 01:57 PM Some horrible weather today, you couldn't see it from pretty close by. But they still worked on the 1st pod, adding more steel again. The real 24/7 skytree watchers found a little gap in the clouds to print it onto their SD cards.

Together with the August diagram a new 3 months schedule has been put onto the message boards around the sites.

Main points:
- the pod will be finished early July
- the new crane will be put up right after that
- it will grow to 440m
- work on the east and west podium buildings will continue.

Momo1435 June 4th, 2010, 02:52 PM Today's pictures
First one is from Haneda airport, today it was already more hazy then yesterday so it's not as clear as I would have liked it to be. The picture was also pretty hard to take since the viewing decks have these fences with holes in them for taking pictures. But if you want to take a picture from an angle it's pretty hard because the fence is just in the way. And then you have to click at the exact right moment, this one was just a bit too early but it was the clearest and the straightest out of my couple of tries.

MurLight June 23rd, 2010, 12:52 AM How high is because the tower?
ukiyo June 28th, 2010, 07:45 AM Tokyo Sky Tree--building it safely
Because dropping a heavy tool or even a bolt from a high structure in a busy urban area could pose a serious danger to people below, the builder of the now nearly 400-meter-high Tokyo Sky Tree in Sumida Ward, Tokyo, is taking extraordinary precautions.
Tokyo Sky Tree, which will reach 634 meters when completed, is now 398 meters high and likely to surpass 400 meters by the end of July. In constructing the world's highest self-standing radio wave transmission tower, workers are doing their jobs at unprecedented heights.
The tower is being built near Narihirabashi Station on the Tobu Isezaki Line in a residential area where the station platform, rails and houses are concentrated.
Below the tower, trains come and go, and nearby residents walk on roads.
The biggest difference between the construction of Tokyo Sky Tree and that of other skyscrapers, such as the 296-meter-tall Yokohama Landmark Tower, is the environment surrounding the structures.
This has led Obayashi Corp., the main contractor for Tokyo Sky Tree, to introduce unprecedented safety measures in the tower's construction.
For example, the general contractor decided to build the huge steel frame scaffolding for the tower on the ground before lifting it into place with cranes, instead of building the scaffolding on the tower.
This reduces the risk of workers dropping tools while building the scaffolding high up on the tower.
In addition, tarps are placed to protect the workers from winds and block the sometimes dizzying view of the ground far below.
Two safety lines are attached to each worker. Even if workers detach one rope to move from one scaffold to another, the other remains in place. Tools and even ball-point pens are tied with cords to workers' belts. In addition, approximately 100-meter-long protective steel panels are set up over the railway just beneath the tower.
Thanks to those efforts, no workers have fallen and no tools have dropped since the start of the construction in July 2008.
However, on April 17, when Tokyo saw the season's latest snowfall in 41 years, officials were forced to reexamine the safety measures. According to Tobu Tower Sky Tree Co., the business operator of Tokyo Sky Tree, a a lump of snow believed to have stuck to the tower fell near a store in the area.
Though no one was injured, the incident alarmed local residents because of the danger of possible head injuries.
The steel frames of Tokyo Sky Tree are coated with a highly water-repellent material that makes it hard for snow to adhere to them. But despite this measure, another lump of snow, which was believed to have fallen from the tower, was found more than 100 meters from the tower on another occasion.
As the tower will grow even higher, it is possible that workers will have to respond to unknown threats, such as strong gusts of wind. It is also possible that abnormal weather conditions could occur before the work is finished late next year.
A Tobu Tower Sky Tree Co. official said: "We are fighting nature. Though we have implemented safety measures, unpredictable incidents may occur. So we'll have to cope with the situation by continual inspections and accumulating experience."

ukiyo July 15th, 2010, 05:03 PM Tokyo Sky Tree a growing part of Kanto's skyline
From Utsunomiya to Mt. Tsukuba to Chiba Port Tower, Tokyo Sky Tree is becoming a part of the Kanto skyline.
Two years after construction started on the terrestrial digital broadcasting tower in Sumida Ward, Tokyo, the "tree" now stands 398 meters high and has become a dominant part of the horizon in Tokyo--and beyond.
About 700 pictures of the tower, taken from various spots, are carried on a Web site called "Tokyo Sky Tree Kokokara Mieruyo Map" (Map showing from where you can see Tokyo Sky Tree) managed jointly by the tower's constructor, Tobu Tower Sky Tree Co., and an office of copywriter Shigesato Itoi.
The longest-range picture of the tower when the Web site was launched in February was taken from Hachioji, western Tokyo--about 45 kilometers from the tower--according to Itoi's office. The tower was about 300 meters tall in February.
Recently, pictures taken from Mt. Kogashi in Utsunomiya, about 100 kilometers from the tower, and from Mt. Tsukuba in Ibaraki Prefecture, about 65 kilometers away, have been contributed to the Web site.
"The tower can be seen from more and more places. We've been surprised to get photos from places further away than we expected," an official in charge of the Web site said.
The tower can be seen from Chiba Port Tower in Chuo Ward, Chiba, and Umihotaru Parking Area of the Tokyo Bay Aqua Line expressway in Kisarazu, Chiba Prefecture. A person using the binoculars on the Peace Museum of Saitama's observation tower in Higashi-Matsuyama, Saitama Prefecture, would be able to see the tower despite being about 50 kilometers away.
Tokyo Sky Tree is expected to top 400 meters in late July or early August, and be completed in December 2011. When finished, the 634-meter tower will be visible from Mito and from the southern tip of the Boso Peninsula--about 90 kilometers away. The tower might also be visible from even further away from higher altitudes.
Construction of the second observation deck, which will be 450 meters above ground, will start this autumn or winter. The view from this deck will take in a 75-kilometer radius, including places such as Lake Kasumigaura in Ibaraki Prefecture and the Miura Peninsula in Kanagawa Prefecture.

And it looks like they will go to the top of the steel frame before they start on the second pod, that means that it can already top out at 495m in October.

It looks like they are right on target. At the end of the year the spire already be visible according to the original schedule, that should be possible.

I have a feeling that it will topped out long before December 2011, but then finishing the tower will take it's time. They can for example only finish installing all the elevators in the core after the spire is jacked up completely.
ukiyo August 2nd, 2010, 08:56 PM They are going to build the spire inside of the tower? I saw a japanese video on it but I still don't get it. They just said it will come from inside and go up. How high is the spire alone anyways
