The topic of the moment: stock market crash

http://www.alriyadh.com/2006/03/12/img/123674.jpg

You can't have escaped this, the topic everyone is talking about. Our stock market correction has for all intents and purposes turned into a crash. The only thing that's keeping the drop orderly is the market fluctuation limit imposed by the CMA.

It was bound to happen. Stocks were highly overvalued and growth stimulated by high liquidity than economic fundamentals.
We urgently need more avenues for investment. We need something more substantive than real estate and stock market trading. We need to see that money go into project financing and grow our economy. VCs are an option.

Regarding the stock market, I think it is finally back on its feet. Thanks to the King and Prince AlWaleed and Shiek Suliman Al Rajhi :)

HiJazzey
March 16th, 2006, 02:58 PM
Hi Riyadhi,

Yes there was a small rebound yesterday. Share splitting and allowing foreigners to buy shares are good steps by the government. As for commitments to invest in the stock market by al-Waleed and al-Rajhi, they have helped restore investor sentiment and stop panic selling, but it's not going to solve long term problems.

As for the whole "hawamir" issue, I think investors have themselves to blame more than anything else. This correction is righting the overvaluations the speculators themselves created. Had they based their investment decisions on economic valuations of stock rather than blind trading based on rumour and hearsay, then the situation today wouldn't be as bad. They've turned the stock market into a 7araj.

Introducing the new largest bank in the Middle East,

Cabinet OKs Launch of Mega Bank - KSA

Arab News - 28/03/2006

JEDDAH, 28 March 2006 — The Council of Ministers yesterday approved the launch of a new bank with a capital of SR15 billion. The bank, named Inmaa, will sell 70 percent of its shares in an initial public offering (IPO) this year.

According to Finance Minister Ibrahim Al-Assaf, Inmaa will carry out both banking and investment activities. State-owned Public Investment Fund, Pension Fund and the General Organization for Social Insurance will have a 30-percent stake in the bank, with each holding 10 percent of its shares.

The council, which was chaired by Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah, gave instructions to complete the formalities for establishing the bank and for launching the IPO before the end of this year, the Saudi Press Agency reported, quoting Culture and Information Minister Iyad Madani.

The Cabinet took another important decision to boost the stock market as it reduced the share value of joint stock companies from SR50 to SR10. "This change will apply to all joint stock companies that have received licenses," Madani said.

Al-Assaf said King Abdullah reduced the stake of state-owned funds in the new bank in order to allow citizens to have more shares in the bank.

"The government licensed the new bank considering the growing demand for such banking operations as equity participation, cost-plus financing and lease finance," Al-Assaf said.

At present there are 11 commercial banks in the Kingdom. They are: National Commercial, Riyad, Samba, Al-Rajhi, Saudi-British, Saudi Fransi, Arab National, AlJazira, Saudi Hollandi, Albilad and Saudi Investment. The government has also licensed 10 foreign banks including BNP Paribas, J.P. Morgan, Deutsche Bank, the National Bank of Kuwait, the National Bank of Bahrain, Emirates Bank, Gulf International Bank, State Bank of India and National Bank of Pakistan.

The consolidated balance sheet of Saudi commercial banks last year showed an overall increase of 1.7 percent of total assets as they rose from SR735 billion ($196 billion) in October to SR748 billion ($199 billion) in November. Total deposits with SAMA remained unchanged for October and November at SR23 billion ($6 billion). The banks' total deposits jumped from SR469 billion ($125 billion) in October to SR477 billion ($127 billion) in November.

The Cabinet meeting also endorsed the rules and regulations related to e-government dealings, Madani said. The new regulations insist that every government department classify its information and data in accordance with specific standards, save its documents electronically, document its administrative procedures accurately and use e-mails and other electronic means for carrying out its activities, he said.

Earlier, Foreign Minister Prince Saud Al-Faisal briefed the Cabinet on the Arab summit, which opens in Khartoum today. The Cabinet hoped that the Khartoum summit would take steps to implement the resolutions taken in the previous summits including measures to improve the working of the Arab League.

Some local news that grabbed my interest:

- Saudi Research and Marketing (the region's biggest publisher), will be listing on Tadawul. IPO starts next week.

- Saudi Airlines is said to be planning to list later this year. 30% will be put up for IPO.
- Citibank is launching a new operation in Saudi, 2 years after it divested from Samba.
- A new university will be opened in the eastern province, called prince Mohammed University, with the participation of American universities.
- A Saudi German business school is opening in Sudair (!!!)

Hi UofT,

At the moment, I rather we send our youth to study abroad, even if we heamorage billions of Riyals a year, than to entrust our children's future to the people running our education system. Until a total rebuild of the education system is done (with the cancerous elements removed) I have no faith in our schools and universities, and I think a lot of Saudis share my view.

Hi Halawala,

It depends on what you mean. If you mean big hubs, then no. But I do think some regional airports should be upgraded to small international airports. Medina, Abha, Tabuk and probably either Hail or Qasseem.

I'm in Riyadh these days... lots of construction is taking place here. They're adding those wide walk-ways (footpaths) on nearly all the roads it seems. Riyadh will definitely look even better few years down the road. I can easily see Al-Anoud tower from my home. Only 3-4 floors to go before it reaches it's max height.

Saudi should not worry about spending billions in arms, I know they are worried with Iran but really that should not be their priority. They need to diversify their economy.

I recently heard the Saudis were making a contract of upwards to $60Billion in acquiring Eurofighter Jets from the UK.

Waste of money, Saudi should just outsource their military to Pakistan for now. There isn't an army on the face of the planet that would protect Saudi better than the Pak Army, It might be sad that they are outsourcing their defense but its better than to be spending billions and not having anyone to fly your planes or man your tanks.

Not saying there aren't capable Saudis there definetly is, but the number is far far smaller than what they require to defend their borders.

That's my opinion, I know some people will disagree and be annoyed by what I have said so i'm sorry.

I am a Saudi and a large segment of Saudi society knows that these arms deals to tamper with public money, including that there was no authority elected by the people to stop this absurd purchase weapons,Indeed, says there is no weapon, but is a pretext to tamper with and access to capital in an indirect manner, dove also is a deal with Britain, which cost us a lot and are in fact "a joke," people start by wishing building and empowerment of the people and diversifying sources of income, but corruption impediment to any reform.I agree with you in everything you say,Iran also does not represent any threat to the Gulf, but the pretext used by Western countries to sell arms to, like Saudi Arabia and others, and the evidence of that in the Gulf war when it opened two stores disarmament there was no weapons! But deals, the dummy to tamper with public money and seize it,but no consolation to the people do not stop the nonsense governments ...

Something else arms deals not only with Britain this year, but also with France, the United States, Russia, and finally, Pakistan to support Pakistan military industry ...Imagine more than half of the budget spent on nonsense!Imagine if all the money spent on technical oil industry and would not last forever,But unfortunately, the mentality of the ruling does not look only for a moment, and was removed in a similar Abathem public money ...

I think these towers are'nt the important keys to solve the problem in Jaddah.

Jaddah need hard working to improve and devolope every thangs. really it need change in the both sides, from north to south, from west to west.

of course we can do that by a great consept and design to be in the futuer a huge international city "name" and "meanful".

A friend of mine is teaching English at some college in Jeddah and then he will be headed to Jizan.

He's a Canadian citizen with Egyptian ancestry and he told me he was very disappointed to see the infrastructure in Jeddah.

He claims its sad that for a nation with such high oil revenues, Jeddah is in such bad condition. He said there are nice areas of Jeddah but the middle class is living in old apartment style housings with deteriorating roads and infrastructure.

I understand there are a lot of improvements under way with the economic cities and all but why is Jeddah in such a poor state?

Saudi really has to wake up before the oil is gone or else they would of missed their opportunity of having first world living standards.

Ohh by the way he told me the food in Saudi is amazing so no disappointment in the food department ;)

I agree. It's very very disappointing how Jeddah has been ignored time and time again by the government while Riyadh's gotten so much more attention. I may be wrong but I feel like it is because Jeddah is more cosmopolitan and somewhat less convervative than Riyadh. I could be wrong. I mean, why have King Abdullah Economic City so close to Jeddah instead of developing the city itself? Can you imagine that kind of investment going into Jeddah?
I hope someone wakes up and decides to do something. The airport is in pathetic shape and so are a lot of the roads.

Wearing a thobe is standard in business, like a suit is in the west. It is also compulsory in public sector institutions. You have to wear it if you work there or have business to do there. They don't let you in otherwise if you're a Saudi. It is also compulsory in schools, but that wasn't inforced much. At least it wasn't in my school. In social settings it depends on the region. People in Riyadh are more into wearing thobes than others. In Jeddah (or other cities in the Hijaz) fewer people wear it. As soon as they're home from work/school they change.

BTW we don't wear dishdashas. They're different garments.

HiJazzey
January 13th, 2007, 01:43 PM
Actually Saudi Dunes, most phones cost a lot of money. However most people don't pay that because the mobile operator subsidises the phone in return for signing a contract with them.

Saudi Dunes
January 13th, 2007, 03:06 PM
^^ HiJazzey i was aware of that. I know that in the US, operators will give you a rebate on the phone once you sign a contract (the longer and larger the plan, in general the larger the rebate). But I didn't know that Saudi telecom operators did the same thing. I thought you purchased a line and phone at different locations.

I'm not sure if Saudi Guy will get a rebate on his iPhone unless he signs the deal with Cingular. And if so, he'll have to use the phone in the United States for at least 4 months before he can get it unlocked so that it is compatible with networks in Saudi Arabia and elsewhere.

The way I understand it is that, cingular gives you phone where you can insert a "chip" (most other companies in the US have the # programed into the phone NO "chip"). A lot of people took advantage of that, and they would buy phones in the US at the discounted; rebate-included price, and sell them outside the US for a profit, many time defaulting on the stipulated monthly payment. Thus they required you to use the phone in the country for X amount of time (I think 4 month).

Saudi Guy if you would like me to, I can ask around for you. I'm gonna be in Chicago on the 22nd of January. I can pass by the Cingular store and check it out for you.

This might be of some interest. You sign up for updates on the phone's release...

The Iphone isn't coming out for a while. And by the way, there's no telling if Cingular will still be called that at that time. Cingular is supposed to be rebranded to AT&T at some point soon. So I guess that completes the circle of life...from AT&T being broken up to AT&T consolidating all the Bell companies.

Let's hope the price is lowered by the phone company subsidies...I'm waiting for it to come out. I guess the only downside is....once it comes out..there may be updated versions soon after that..and then again after that....just like the ipod.

Roundabout pre-historic? Guys, are you serious?

Roundabouts are actually safer and more efficient that conventional intersections.

A conventional intersection has 32 points of conflict while a roundabout has only 8. In Europe it was actually proven that roundabouts reduce the number of crashes by 39% and the severity of crashes by up to 76%. Not to add that in Maryland it was found to reduce costs associated with injuries by up to $6.7 million dollars annually!

The only negative that a rounadbout presents is that it increases the number of conflicts between motor vehicles and cyclists...and I don't think we need to worry about that in Saudi Arabia, I my self have not seen many around!

huit
April 25th, 2007, 11:16 AM
^ I meant, roundabouts as opposed to underpasses. A very crowded intersection would benefit far more from an underpass than a roundabout.

HiJazzey
April 27th, 2007, 10:28 AM
The roundabout is a very elegant solution: it is simple, cheap, and efficient. It has superior performance to traffic light junctions. The only problem in Saudi is that people don't follow the rules, that's why there is chaos. If drivers yielded to traffic inside the roundabout things would run smoothly, but we have some kamikaze drivers who barge into the roundabout without a care. The solution IMO is a crackdown similar to the one on speeding.

HiJazzey, what Saudi Arabia needs to do is install traffic calming measures on the entry legs of all rouandsabouts. Installing speed humps, rumble strips, or just flashing signals in advance of the roundabout, and enforcing it through increased police control for a certain time period should decrease the violations. From what I have noticed, Saudi Arabia should stiffen the penalties to traffic violations, increased jail-time, higher violation prices, more active police patrolling....it seems police in saudi arabia are on the streets more so for security reasons rather than traffic enforcement. The government can also probably reduce roadway fatalities, injuries, and damages, by further educating the driver. Maybe they can make it part of the education process to get a drivers lisence. Educate the people about all the money that is lost each year through increased insurance costs, roadway-repairs, medical costs and so on....this really adds up, I think by showing people statistics, and jolting them at first, your long term response from them should be better.

What do you think?

Guys, we should work on a thread that lists all the projects classified by city and/or status. The list should not include pictures or any details; just a link to the project's thread. It would make it easier for us or anyone else to look up any info about any project.

Now who's going to help me?

Well, the point of this list is to help us locate what we are looking for quickly. It would be something like a glossary. The thread I made few months back is okay but it takes long time to load and does not have the threads' links. Resizing the picture would take forever and they would still take long time to load.

Here's an example

1 Riyadh Galleria Mall
2 Olaya Center

that make us know where all that project locited easly as ones (of course you update that map time by time)

^ I'm not in Saudi Arabia but am willing to help with anything I can!

Btw, did anyone saw a news report on KAEC on CNN's Inside Middle East? It was pretty detailed... and after seeing it, I'm pretty hopeful and excited that it'll go a long way in helping KSA's economy!

It was around 5:00 PM Saudi Time. You might want to check out CNN's schedule for today, they might re-telecast today's Inside Middle East.
They showed quite a few more renderings/animations of the project and the interviews of SAGIA and Emaar's chairmen. According to the news report, the work is going on at a pretty fast pace!

Following are the specs of the HDX:

* Processor: Intel Centrino Duo processor technology featuring, T7700 2.4GHz processor

* Ports: 4 Universal Serial Bus (USB) 2.0, 2 Headphone out, 1 w/Side Digital Audio, 1 microphone-in, 1 HDMI, 1 VGA (15-pin), 1 eSata, 1 TV-Out (S-video), 1 RJ -45 (LAN), 1 Expansion Port 3, 1 IEEE 1394 Firewire (4-pin), 1 Consumer IR (Remote Receiver), Native External Speaker Configurations Ports, SPDIF, Rear, Center/Sub, Front, Integrated HP HDTV Hybrid TV Tuner: NTSC/ATSC, Input, Blaster (IR emitter), Stereo Audio Input

The dedicated graphics card performance from the ATI 2600 is a bit of a mystery in terms of the performance we can expect, the assumption is that it's on part with say an Nvidia Go 7900 graphics card and will of course support DX 10 graphics.

Pricing will start at $2,999 for the HDX and availability will start in the summer, at around the end of June.

After two days of dealing with sub-forums, I gotta say, I miss the non-subforums one! :)

SG, that looks like a pretty neat laptop. Although the specs justify the price but it is still very expensive.
