Note: The late Rais Ghazi Mohammad, the landlord of a large estate, began this project in 1932 in Bhong village, the most important of the scattered villages on his vast property. The mosque was to be the most glorious building in his palace compound which also included a smaller mosque, a madrasa and rooms for students. The work of specialists gathered from all over Pakistan and India (master masons and craftsmen from Rajasthan, calligraphers and painters from Karachi), the compound was designed and constructed over a period of nearly 50 years. Broadly eclectic in their use of sources, the builders borrowed stylistic elements from nearby Lahore, as well as Iran, Spain and Turkey, and combined them with Western colonial elements of the 1940s. Materials and crafts used range from the traditional (teak, ivory, marble, coloured glass, onyx, glazed tile work, fresco, mirror work, gilded tracery, ceramic, calligraphic work and inlay) to the modern and synthetic (marbleised industrial tile, artificial stone facing, terrazzo, coloured cement tile and wrought iron). Only traditional materials were used in the mosque interiors. In the words of the jury: "Bhong enshrines and epitomises the popular taste in Pakistan with all its vigour, pride, tension and sentiment. Its use, and misuse, of signs and symbols expresses appropriate growing pains of an architecture in transition."
Recipient of the Aga Khan Award for Architecture, 1986.

The Gazi Husrev-Beg Mosque, Sarajevo-Bosnia & Herzegovina.
Facts:
The Gazi Husrev-Beg Mosque, often referred to as the Beg's Mosque for short, is a mosque in the city of Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is considered the most important Islamic structure in the country and one of the world's finest examples of Ottoman Architecture. It is located in the Bačarija neighborhood in the Stari Grad municipality.
The mosque was built in 1531 by Gazi Husrev-beg, the provincial governor of Bosnia and a man widely considered Sarajevo's greatest donor who built most of Sarajevo's old city at this time.
The Beg's Mosque was built by a Persian architect, who would later go on to build the Selimiye Mosque in Edirne for the Sultan Selim I. Out of all the Ottoman balkan provinces, Bosnia's population was the quickest to convert to Islam. Due to this, during the height of the Ottoman Empire, many of the most famous examples of Ottoman architecture in the Balkans were built in Bosnia, including Mosques, bridges, libraries, bathhouses, etc. etc. The Gazi Husrev-Beg mosque is a vital part of this period of prosperity and cultural growth.

Teh Mustafa Pasha Mosque in Skopje:
A beautiful mosque under the Skopje fortress. The temple was built in 1492 by Mustafa Pasha, whose name in inscribed on a plaque above the gate. Artichitecurally, the temple is a cubical structure capped with a large cupola, 16m in diameter. The impression is complemented by the porch, which is supported by four marble pillars. The 47m high minraret and the mosque are built with cut marble. The interior is decorated with floral motifs.
(Within the complex there was a medresa (a religios school) and an imaret (canteen). Within the complex today there are the Turbe of Mustafa Pasha (right next to the mosque), and a sarcofagus, believed to mark the grave of Uma, one of Mustafa PAshas daughters.

The Mosque of Amr Ibn El-Aas <http://www.pbase.com/image/53566981>
This is the first and oldest mosque ever built on the land of Egypt. Erected in 642 AD (21 AH) by Amr Ibn al'As, the commander of the Muslim army that conquered Egypt, the mosque is also known as Taj al-Jawamie (Crown of Mosques, al-Jamie'al-Ateeq (the Ancient Mosque) and Masjid Ahl ar-Rayah (Mosque of Banner Holders).
The mosque is said to have been built on the site of Amr Ibn el-As's tent at Fustat, is the oldest existing mosque, not just in Cairo, but the entire African Continent. Located north of the Roman Fortress of Babylon, it is actually on the edge of Fustat, the temporary city founded by Amr, and was an Islamic learning center long before El-Azhar Mosque. It could hold up to 5,000 students.

Great Mosque
Inner courtyard of the Great Mosque in Xian. The architecture of the Great Mosque is very much similar to tradional Chinese temples. At first sight the Great Mosque resembles a Buddhist temple. It's the interior of the rooms and halls inside the mosque that distinguishes it from traditional Chinese temples.

National Mosque, Kuala Lumpur
This uniquely designed mosque embodies a contemporary expression of traditional Islamic art, calligraphy and ornamentation. Its most striking feature is the multi-fold umbrella-like roof which symbolises the aspirations of an independent nation. Standing prominently against the skyline is the sleek and stylish 73m high minaret. The mosque, which took three years to construct, was opened on Aug 27, 1965.The national mosque serves as the principal mosque for the city dwellers.

Nurosmaniye interior
The Nurosmaniye mosque was built by a Greek architect, Simon, who in the opinion of Strolling Through Istanbul (Redhouse, 1989) produced "a failure, but a charming one". I fell for its spell ages ago, not the least because crossing its awkwardly formed "court" from the Covered Market side to the exit at the other side provides a short moment of rest in the busy city. If you want some more rest, the mosque is spacious and quiet. The mosque was begun by Sultan Mahmut I in 1748 and finished by his brother and successor, Osman III in 1755. Nur is "sacred light", so "Osman's Sacred Light". Strangely I always find it a bit dark inside.
This is the ceilling above the mimbar.

Stanpolitan September 10th, 2006, 07:57 AM alam . All these mosque pics are beautiful & some of them are masterpieces .
But I am refering to your pics in the first page , Turkish mosques don't have much middle eastern feel to them , because of their origin place & architectural style. That's why they're called church-mosques by some
Ottoman & Turkish mosques originated from the basic architectural style of Byzantine (East Roman) churches.
Their looks are so similar , unexpert eyes can't recognise between the two from outside without the minarets (towers) which this happened to me many times. Many people confused when I showed the pics of those two. Also the towers of Ottoman-turkish mosques were and are in Gothic style , like in old churches in Western Europe , slender , straight lines & sharp like a pencil , very unlike in appearance & in comparison to Egyptian , Morrocan mosques etc.
If you see Ottoman mosques in any other country , compare them with your native architecture of your mosques . You'll see the immediate difference :)

You can see Gothic-Byzantine-Ottoman mosques in Bosnia , Albania , Kosovo , Macedonia , Bulgaria , Romania , Greece etc. and all over Balkan Peninsula and when the natives of any of these countries build a new mosque
,they do it with their native Ottoman style. They are not so much into other styles of mosques from other countries , as it is read in the subforum that is on the top link.
The Qol Sherif Mosque in Kazan has just built by turkish company with the taste of tatars that live in that republic called Tatarstan (they added -stan recently , it was Tataria before) They speak a turkic language and contributed to russian society immensely in every way for centuries & to the world with their renowned people , like the famous classical music composer Rachmaninoff , the famous dancer Rudolph Nuriyev , tennis player Marat Sarafin and many more...
yxz September 10th, 2006, 10:20 AM ottoman mosques are just great!
alam September 10th, 2006, 09:00 PM alam .
Yes Stanpolitan, i agree with u on that.. in fact u see the same trend in all other Muslim countries as well... A mosque can be any building, that is capable of accomodating a congregation, and that faces towards Mecca. A typical mosque has a Mehrab, a dome and a minaret...but the architectural elements of a Mosque are mostly derived from the traditional architecture of the place..its like assimilation with the regional culture.
But Turkey has some of the most elaborate mosques, and turkish architects have always proved their expertise in designing mosques in other countries as well...The Faisal Mosque in Islamabad, pakistan is a good example.

Edwardes July 27th, 2007, 02:36 PM I don't understand how the hell Pakistan is apart of South Asia, it's more apart of the Greater Middle East than South Asia. Infact, I would like if Pakistan's Foreign Policy change, and we start concentrating more on the Middle East / Central Asia than South Asia, which we have NOTHING in common!
Balochistan is the most middle eastern province we have, NWFP has nothing in common with South Asia, it leans more towards Central Asia. Punjab and Sindh were their own nations, very separate of mainstream india. Punjab and Sindh had there own rich culture, language and customs, and Kashmir, again has nothing to do with South Asia. We speak URDU, which uses Arabic/Persian text, again separating us from mainstream South Asia.
I'd rather Pakistan start concentrating on it's REAL neighbours Iran and Afghanistan, and stop wasting time with india. Our famalies and ancestors come from these lands, and they still make up the majority of our population, only 5% of Pakistanis can trace their origins back to india.

^Anton^ July 29th, 2007, 12:45 AM ^^ They are not allowed in several European cities because they don't fit the city's architecture as they say.
Saying "minarets are banned in Europe" is misleading and plainly false. You guys need to keep in mind that religion has no place in the laws over here, so mosques, churches, synagogues or a shopping center, they're all regarded as buildings, so they're all subject to the same laws of urbanism.
You need to remember that most European cities have historic centers where there're lots of different laws which aim to protect the architecture of those areas, and therefore construction in those areas is highly restricted and controled. Even if you just want to refurbish a residential building, the construction plan needs to be approved by the city hall and a group of experts has to determine the construction follows the traditional architecture of the quarter.
So, bottom line is, saying minarets are banned in Europe is a total manipulation, and I don't know who can even believe that when there're hundreds of mosques all throughout Europe... mosques are subject to the same laws as any other kind of building, this is the truth.

Maybe you didn't pay attention to what I said, but minarets ARE NOT BANNED in mosques in Europe, an example of that is that mosque in Madrid which I posted (the fact that you didn't pay attention to that makes me think you're lying on purpose), which is not a monument but a recent building. A couple of weeks ago, I was in Toulouse (France) and they were building a mosque which had a minaret too, so please, stop spreading lies. I'm sorry but a lie does not become true just by repeating it.

TalB August 1st, 2007, 09:58 PM I know I am going to hear responses on how third rate the mosques in the NYC area as opposed to the Mid East. The reason why most have taken former synagouges, churches, schools, and stores is b/c the land is small. Also, most Muslims didn't come to NYC or the rest of the US until the around the end of the Cold War, so they are only recent. Nevertheless, one can still enjoy Islamic food from the street vendors that stand on city streets or go to their resturaunts. Don't fret about there not being a lot of mosques in NYC either, b/c it does outnumber the number of Hindu and Bhuddhists temples in the boroughs combined, which aren't a lot. On a sidenote, the reason why there are more churches and synagogues is b/c the Jews and Christians have been here longer.

I don't think they look so bad.
The churches in Iran don't look as good as those cathedrals in Europe, either. ;)

Xusein August 3rd, 2007, 08:58 AM Central Mosque, Hargeisa, Somalia(land)
I went inside and prayed Friday Prayer here once on my travels to the area back in 2003. Most mosques in Somalia are quite modest at best...the majority are just simple buildings. You will only find minarets in the center of the larger cities. But beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
This is the largest mosque in area in Somalia, although I have heard that there has been a much larger one built.

I think that reinforced concrete was used in the building of the Adana central mosque; although stone masonry looks better and has higher quality in the end, it does take up a lot of time and money.

TalB December 26th, 2007, 09:49 PM dawah means to heal?
Here's what I found in wikipedia.
"Dawah (Arabic دعوة daˤwah, literally: summons or call) is an Arabic term meaning "invite" or "invitation". It is considered to be an obligation on Muslims to invite others to Islam. Dawah is often referred to as the act of "preaching Islam". It can apply to Muslims and non-Muslims alike."

lumpia December 29th, 2007, 03:39 AM A few pics on the unique and quite interesting Medieval West African mud brick mosques. They look really otherworldly :D The style used to built these mosques is now termed as the Sudano-Sahelian architectureal style, after the 2 geographic regions in West Africa that this style is limited to: Sudan (not the country) - Sparse savanna grassland, Sahel - very sparse vegetation, situated immediately south of the Sahara.
Great Mosque of Djenne, Mali
The Great Mosque of Djenné is the largest mud brick or adobe building in the world and is considered by many architects to be the greatest achievement of the Sudano-Sahelian architectural style, albeit with definite Islamic influences.
Original construction: 13th century AD under Djenne ruler Koy Konboro.

Sankore Mosque and University, Timbuktu, Mali.
Sankore, as it stands now, was built in 1581 AD (= 989 A. H.) on a much older site (probably from the 13th or 14th century) and became the center of the Islamic scholarly community in Timbuktu. The University of Sankore was a madrassah, very different in organization from the universities of medieval Europe. It was composed of several entirely independent schools or colleges, each run by a single master or imam. Students associated themselves with a single teacher, and courses took place in the open courtyards of mosque complexes or private residences.

Today I will show you the Great Mosque of Sousse (Tunisia), one of my favorite mosques I've ever seen because it is really different from the others, it has a unique arquitechture, beacause it is a fortress-like mosque, built in 851.
In the photos you can see the short minaret (another difference with normal mosques) and in another photo you will be able to see to kind of arcades, the "modern" ones were added in the XVII century.
I hope you'll like the photos!! ^__^ [all photos by me]

just want to know is it common for the mosques in Tunisia to have architecture following Roman amphiteaters?
ikari January 9th, 2008, 01:46 PM I know that almost all the mosques in Tunisia have this tipycal Roman temple comlumn, the reason is that they stole almost all the columns of the roman cities arround Tunisia and re-used them as columns at the mosques. Sometimes they re-use only the capytol and the base of the column (see Zitouna Mosque photo below)
For example, Kairouan Great Mosque has 414 pillars originally Roman or Byzanthine salvaged from Carthage and Hadrumètum (Sousse). Zitouna Mosque has 200 Byzanthine columns salvaged from Roman Cartaghe.
Here the photos all photos by me:

That's the reason why almost all the tunisian mosques have this roman columns, and they build modern mosques with columns in the roman way.
Maybe this afternoon I will upload the last photos of mosques of tunisia.
See you! ^_^
metal gear January 9th, 2008, 02:26 PM nice but we should destroy all mosques and churches for a better future :okay:
why not distroy swamps?
Zmey January 10th, 2008, 01:03 PM nice but we should destroy all mosques and churches for a better future :okay:
Albanians did it decades ago and their present isn't really glorious.
Btw. I kinda agree, but I'm not that radical. Religious institution should be controlled, not destroyed as it's sometimes more harmful.

thank you for the explanation, anyways i think the combination of the roman columns into the mosques design is nice, provides for good variations of mosques structures around the world... :)

elibbybet January 14th, 2008, 10:14 PM I was reading this forum and I was very surprised to read that some people think that the building of minarets is illegal in Europe. I watched the interview with the man from Oxford that someone else posted (in french), and it refers to a proposed bill by some right wing nutjob in Switzerland. The most recent information I could find was an article from December 17 which says that minarets have not been made illegal, but that there is movement in that direction in several European countries (including Switzerland, as the video says).
this article also references a town in France which actually gave money to an Islamic community to build a mosque for themselves in a small town. Again, this article is dated December 17, so if something has happened in the last month, I'd be curious to know about it.

Zmey March 4th, 2008, 01:50 PM Ferhat-Pasha Mosque (Bosnian: Ferhat-paina damija) was a central building of the city of Banja Luka and one of the most successful achievements of the Islamic architecture of the 16th century Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The mosque was demolished by explosives on May 7, 1993 by the Serb militia that also razed to the ground the minaret that survived the first night explosion.

The Aladza (meaning painted) Mosque in Foca was built in 1550/1551 in the town centre of Foca. Because of its architecture, structural proportions, and both engraved and painted geometric and floral decoration, Aladza Mosque was one of the most important monuments in Bosnia and Herzegovina and beyond.
In 1992 the complex of the Aladza Mosque in Foca was blown up and totally destroyed along with its associated buildings...

I think Turkey should be doing much much more than it is doing now in aiding Bosnia in rebuilding her historic heritage. The work on rebuilding the Mostar bridge was a very nice example of cooperation, since then I'm sorry to say that we've probably forgotten Bosnia :(
Zmey March 4th, 2008, 10:45 PM I think Turkey should be doing much much more than it is doing now in aiding Bosnia in rebuilding her historic heritage. The work on rebuilding the Mostar bridge was a very nice example of cooperation, since then I'm sorry to say that we've probably forgotten Bosnia :(
Most historical sites and buildings in Bosnia were (and still are) under state protection. All those building were carefully examined and everything was documented in the case earthquake or fire happens. The problem with those gems, Ferhadija and Aladza mosque, to be more precise, is that the reconstruction is time consuming. Money is not a problem and we have experts, but as I said it takes time...
Reconstruction of the Old bridge in Mostar was highly symbolic and that the reason Turks (they build it) and Croats (they destroyed it) were involved.
However, immediately after the war many mosques were reconstructed by Wahabis. The state was too weak and I think Turkey made mistake for not stopping Saudis to build Frankenstein looking buildings on the site were beautiful Ottoman mosques once stood.
As for now, I think cultural cooperation between two countries is great and I don't agree about being forgotten. :P
Mehmed pasha Sokolovic bridge will soon need complete reconstruction and I believe Turkey will be involved.

*UofT* March 5th, 2008, 06:05 AM WOW!!, I just saw a Travel documentary on Bosnia/Serbia/Croatia/Albania
Bosnia blew me away! the beauty in Mostar and surrounding areas was incredible. The coast of Croatia was also beautiful as were some places in Serbia.
Albania seemed like a country that is trying extremely hard to recover economically and its culture was also very different to that of Bosnia even though both are muslim.

Sheikh Zayed mosque in Abu Dhabi
As Sheikh Zayed wished, the mosque was built on a 9.5-metre (31-feet) high hill so it is visible from far, it covers an area of 22,000 square metres (237,000 square feet), and it can accommodate more than 40,000 faithful," said engineer Mohammad Ali al-Ameri.
Ameri said construction was nearly over, with only fences, gardens and car parks still to be completed.
"Built 100 percent with Italian marble, the mosque has four 107-metre (351-feet) tall minarets, 82 domes of seven different sizes, 96 columns inside and 1,048 outside," Ameri told AFP.
"Thousands of workers," nearly all from the Asian subcontinent, were involved in building the mosque, he said. The sculptors were Moroccan.
Thousands of rare and semi-precious stones, some encrusted in marble, were used to decorate the structure.
The centrepiece is a 6,000 square metre (64,583 square feet) hand-made Persian carpet, said to be the biggest in the world.
"More than 1,200 women from the Khorasan region in eastern Iran spent two years weaving the carpet, which weighs 45 tonnes and cost more than 8.5 million dollars," Ameri said.
The carpet covers the floor of the main prayer hall, which can accommodate up to 9,000 faithful.
Two rooms next to the main prayer hall, with a 1,500-capacity each, have been reserved for women, who can follow sermons delivered by prayer leaders on giant television screens. Islam requires men and women to pray separately.
The main dome is also "the biggest" mosque dome in the world, according to Ameri, who said it is 75 metres (246 feet) high with a 32.2-metre (105.6 feet) diametre.
Another breathtaking piece is a huge crystal chandelier in the main prayer hall, one of seven German-made chandeliers costing more than eight million dollars. It is 10-metre (32.8 feet) tall, 10-metre wide and weighs nine tonnes.
Ameri would not give the total cost of the mosque, but Suleimani estimated it at more than two billion dirhams (545 million dollars).

I still think that Turkey should be doing more in aiding countries like Bosnia in restoring historical monuments that were destroyed during the war, there are many people living here who have roots in the Balkans and thus we should not forget that it is a common heritage that was nearly wiped out. If Turkey had done more, some people who don't share this heritage and even hate it would not have had the opportunity to try and replace them with buildings that disregard and disrespect this heritage.
Anyway, I think Bosnia has some of the most beautiful mosques and historic buildings in the world and I am happy that they are slowly being rebuilt.
PS: I watched a documentary on the restoration of the Mostar bridge, one of the hardest things was finding a stone mason that used old methods in his work, they finally found someone from eastern Turkey :)

Pocitelj mosque
Evliya Celebi, the Turkish traveller said in 1664:
"There is a tall cypress tree in its courtyard. This shining mosque was erected by a forebear of our lord Ibrahim Aga. Alongside the town walls, beside the water, his honored brother built a public kitchen imaret (kitchen) which distributes free bread and soup to needy inhabitants day and night. On Thursday evenings, it distributes spiced meat and savory and sweet rice dishes. The imaret will remain thus as long as it is the will of God ... In the town, there is a mekteb (elementary school). Later, our lord Ibrahim built a medresa (secondary theological school) and also sent craftsmen to build hammam (public bath) and a han (inn) for travelers... The houses of the town are built one above the other, facing west towards the river. There is an abundance of walnut trees here. Since the climate is mild, fruit grows better here than in other towns."

Zmey April 13th, 2008, 08:34 AM I dont fancy new mosques that were built in Bosnia and I also think it's a waste of money (mosques are usually empty save the Bajrams), but this one is just beautiful. It will be built in Mostar, Herzegovina.
